Wondering if this is like what Blizzard does, distribute patches via a custom bittorrent client.
If it's faster, doesn't compromise security, doesn't destabilize my machine, and doesn't bork the game I could give a damn what they're using (IP over carrier pigeon).
  2. Okay here's the link to the main gallery. Newest stuff is always last page.

All in all a good, "Cook 'em all and let God bring the barbecue sauce" Sister Psyche. Clamor went down so fast it was like she wasn't even there.

The only downer was that we had one player who wanted to participate but he had a couple things running against him.
    1. He was running late.
    2. We were already a full team.
    3. He wasn't high enough level to run the Psyche.
Apologies for not being able to accomodate him.
  3. And here's an entry from me. Actually damn close to Findulias'. Mine's less recharge and more defense coverage.

  4. Okay after NCSoft Support cleared my questions AGAIN, I was able to log in and authenticate.

Even so THE DAMN CAPTCHA STILL ERRORED OUT the first time and I KNOW that I entered it right.

I'm betting that this is a rather BIG part of NCSoft's problems (other than people who maybe entered bogus info for questions previously because they weren't going to give NCSoft real, salable information when they didn't know they were going to be longtime addic...subscribers).

My eyesight is BY NO MEANS poor. And even the CAPTCHA didn't mung the letters and numbers up badly enough that they were unrecognizable. I even took the time to double and triple check them one by one. AND IT STILL FAILED that first time.
  5. Okay, if you're NEVER planning to overclock, don't burn the extra $30-something bucks on K-marked processors (actually don't burn cash on any of the i5 processors with a letter following the part designation).

On Newegg right now, you can get an i5 2400 (3.1-3.4Ghz) for $194
On Newegg right now, you can get an i5 2500 (3.3-3.7Ghz) for $209

While the speed bump is relatively tiny in comparison, I'd be inclined towards the 2500 if you have an extra $15 rattling around.

Also, check if you have a Microcenter around you. Seriously. Their prices are lower than Newegg by about $15-$20.

You can actually get an i5 2500K (yeah, the K variant) for $199! That's a total no-brainer right there.

Now, some of that price will be made up in tax (the 2500K would come out to about $213 by me). But still.
  6. Usually when my Fire/Rad trifectas someone (Vengeance/Fallout/Mutation) I wind up thanking the corpse and pointing out how many enemies "they" just killed.

Then I ask them to ease off on the chili next time.

It's 1155. Give the respun Sandy Bridge chipsets a couple more weeks to saturate the channel partners before buying.

Do you have backups of your CoH folder anywhere?

If you do, start up the launcher and let it start installing. Once the directory appears, stop and close. Then paste the PIGGS folder into the directory. Restart the installation and you should dramatically cut down on your time.

    If you don't:

Depending on when you got the disk, total install time might actually be LOWER if you simply download fresh. If you have anything pre-Going Rogue, don't even bother installing from CD.

Pre GR Disks: Install time + Update Time is greater than simply installing fresh, since you're pulling down something in the neighborhood of 2-3GB of patch files anyhow.

I know I had the issue with the versions not appearing on the old CoH Updater.

The NCSoft Launcher displays the versions on the Properties screen.

If they were not showing up for the new launcher, I hadn't heard about it.
If they're showing different versions, you should try to patch.

If you're having an issue with the new launcher, back up your CoH directory and then let the NCSoft Launcher check it for errors.

i have just not recently i was just thinking about a bunch of my past toons non even made it to 50 and whats worse is i run into a wall sorta with ideas for new toons and think back on how my past ideas were better then what i've been trying.

I've deleted a couple. Most were experimental toons that I had no intention of leveling (like my one blaster built expressly for testing to see how much inf I could make within an hour of being created).

Almost all of the ones I've deleted I don't even remember anymore. None of them were very high level. Maybe 3rd at tops.
  13. Unfortunately yes.

I was going to say "pre-granite it's okay" and then remember that it toggles off rooted.

I really have no clue what im doing as for as the build goes. I love the insane dps but I dont want to die at every turn. I want to have something with good survivablity but not sacrifice the intense AoE and single target dps. I know that Reacharge and dmg out put are my main suvivablity as dead mobs do no dmg, but I feel exposed when im in the middle of the action. Also I want mainly to be able to drop mobs as fast as possible so my main focus is on AoE. I need to know wat powers a skipable and what i should grab from the pools to up survivablity. I also like the Idea of useing Fly to rain death from above but i have thought about using hover and maybe use ninja or beast run as my main travle to free up slots. My pocket is deep so cost is no problem. Im not a big fan of purples mainly b/c it costs as much for one good puple set as an entire non purple build but i would be willing to spring for one maybe 2 sets if this toon needed the extra recharge. Also im at a loss on what epic to go with... I kinda like Ice for the +def and a heal/hp cap but im up for any suggestions.
1: Learn to hover-blast. While it's nice to be able to get in melee and burn people up close and personal, in large mobs (on teams) with heavy incoming AoE, you're just a Vengeance waiting to happen.

2: Don't go nuts on looking for maximum +def. You'll gimp your build trying to softcap. If you want defense though, look for positional. Some ranged and AoE def are good things.

3: Look at the Flame Mastery pool. Rise of the Phoenix means dying is just another attack!

4: Build your attacks Damage/Acc/Endurance (in more or less that order) with raw slotting consideration. Then look for recharge and defense in your set bonuses. If you get recharge in there too, great. If you REALLY want recharge, go with Hasten, three-slotted. Then you can attack like a rabid chihuahua on crack.

5: Yeah, unless you find Beast run or Ninja run too slow, look at going with Hover and use the temps as travel powers.

No can i do my add ones to the properties to effect fps rate of the game while it's in the background?
You'd do this to the shortcut in the same way you used to do it with the old CoH Launcher shortcut.

Or you can use Kheldarn's method from within the launcher during your tweakage.

Seriously, it's like asking if Bruce Willis is going to suck playing John McClane.
  18. Okay guys. You've heard about it. Now it's here. The new NCSoft Launcher.

    "But it's DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!" right?

Not really. And with a bit of tweaking, you can get it outta your face and get yourself into the game with a minimum of fuss and muss.

So how do we go about this? Two easy steps and a couple tweaks.

FIRST: Thou shalt not leave thy tracking status uncontrolled.

When you're installing, you have the option to send tracking data to NCSoft. Now sending the tracking data can be somewhat invasive. However, it'll definitely help NCSoft fix any glaring issues in the launcher.

SECOND: Thou shalt not accept default settings

By default, the NCSoft Launcher is somewhat...unfriendly. Here's how you go about fixing that.

For those of you who have NOT see this screen yet, this is the NCSoft Launcher as of March 4th, 2011.

As you can see, it has options for launching multiple games, etc. What WE are interested in is that cute little File menu at the top.

And here we are in settings!

Now, by default, the drop-down for "After Launching A Game" is "Minimize Launcher". We don't want this unless you're always starting up multiple accounts more or less simultaneously.

For those with multiple accounts, leave this alone or change it to "Launcher Remains on Desktop".

For those with single accounts, you want to get rid of it. The program itself eats up only a little bit of memory immediately after starting, but it DOES leak memory, consuming more and more over time. So change the option to "Exit Launcher".

On to the Auto Update screen! Most of the stuff here is relatively harmless. The one annoyance is "Show notifications about updates in the system tray."

Okay, let's examine this, logically *insert Vulcan eyebrow* for a second here.
    • We DO NOT want this program running all the time, as it leaks memory. Therefore, no update notifications will pop.
    • We won't have this up and running during a game in most cases. Therefore, no update notifications will pop.
    • The only time we'll see it is in the few seconds the launcher takes to open up. During which time we'll wind up pulling down a patch ANYHOW.
In short, uncheck "Show Notifications" and be done with it.

Finally, we come to the Advanced screen. Here, you can pick region, language and re-enable statistics if you turned it off during installation. But what we're concerned with is the option to allow multiple instances of a game to be launched.

If you're a single-account player, there's zero need to fiddle with this.

If you're a multi-account player, then do yourself a favor and check this now.

Click OK and you're done. At that point you've done everything possible in the settings to minimize the intrusiveness of the launcher. Back to the main screen with you. BACK! BACK!

    THIRD: Thou shalt create shortcuts!

As you can see, when you right-click on your installed games, you have the option to create a desktop shortcut. DOO EET!

"But my desktop is crowded and I don't want more junk on there!"

SHADDAP! Create the shortcut, and if you're in Windows, you have the option to right-click on the shortcut and pin it to the taskbar or pin it to the start menu. Once you've got it pinned out of the way, delete the hated desktop shortcut and get on with your game.

FOURTH: If you are retrofitting the client from an older NCSoft Launcher:

I think it patched the launcher executables to actually support the NC launcher.

Hmm, ah here we go: http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/news_archive/upgrade_to_the_ncsoft_launcher.html

Please note it says: This will modify your game client so that it will be fully supported by the NCsoft Launcher.

    Hope this helps...
    EU @Coolio

    Edit: For Alexander_Drako
After installing the basic launcher "NCSoftLauncherSetup.exe" try running the "COH_Installer.exe" to patch your game to work with the launcher.
It patches the CoX executables to work with the NClauncher rather than loop into the older launcher, this is where you are having the problem IIRC.

    Note: "COH_Installer.exe"
Will try to patch the game (City of) if it finds it or will install the NClauncher to install the game if it doesn't.

The patch to the game (City of) will only happen if it (COH_Installer.exe) can find the NCLauncher executable if it can find it, if it can't then it won't patch anything, hence causing this issue for players with "City of" already installed but not the NClauncher.

If you know you have the game installed but not the NClauncher, get the "NCSoftLauncherSetup.exe" and run it before the "COH_Installer.exe"

Hope this helps solve this additional issue.

FIFTH: Passing additional parameters to the game:

    You can do that, too!

First, right-click on the City of Heroes entry, and select Properties:

In the screen that comes up, you'll notice a place for Extra Command Line Parameters (Advanced):

Simply enter the Command Line Parameters you desire, then click OK:

Ta-da! Now the game will launch with the Golden GR Skin!
Additionally this method can be used to bypass the bad/old driver check in the game. In some cases, people are trapped between a rock and a hard place when the maker and the vendor stop supporting certain setups (like laptop graphics).

In this case add -ignoreBadDriver to the "Extra Command Line Parameters (Advanced)" line.
Hit OK and launch the game.

And that's pretty much all there is to this.

No. Technically it's still a computer.

It's just not the same general-purpose one we've been used to for the last 30 years. It's an instance of function following form.
  20. Here's one that makes a decent try at capping. It's capped S/L, almost 40% E/N and 43% F/C.

Warning: The build itself is STUPID expensive. But compare it to the one above. You'll see ways to economize between the build above and this one and still arrive at a supremely tough tank.

Not the same. That's like saying you could drive a car with a brick on the accellerator and a couple ropes on the steering wheel.

Technically true, but it loses something in the translation.

Just FYI, the "OC" card is roughly a 4-5% overclock (both GPU and memory). Which isn't even going to translate into 5% more speed at the high end. Because, at your native resolution, you'll be limited by the quantity of your VRAM.

Price for the MSI on Newegg: $249
Price for the Palit on Newegg: $279

It's still your decision. But you'll see more bang out of that other card. My only concern is trying to get you the most bang for your buck.
