Quote:I'd love to make this a poll, but can't find how, so I'll just ask.
If all your characters were deleted, your veteran status, everything (even forum posts), and you had to start from scratch, would you still continue to play this game, or would it be too much of a setback?
It'd probably suck a bit at first. But I could probably roll with it.
Hyperstrike would sure as hell be much more well-rounded contact-wise than he is.
As for Inf, I can make that all day, every day (and ten times as much on Sunday evening!). -
Quote:Okay, I now no longer feel so bad about the copious amounts of time I've spent in-game when I should be doing other things...Ok so before I say, I want to clarify, this is truth, not a troll or a lie in any way. That being said;
I will end this game with 224 level 50's... of those:
138 have all acco's
97 are fully IO'ed
41 are fully tier 4 Incarnated thru Hybrid
22 are fully PvP IO spec'ed
My main Toon has 7382 hours patrol time.
Yes....Im addicted. Always have been, always will be.
I have been mocked for this, I have been trolled for this, I no longer give a ****. I play out of pure love for this game. -
15 on Protector alone. Probably another 5 or so amongst other servers.
-
I still love that he was at Disco Demolition Night and even admitted to stealing a bat from the dugout.

Quote:Work for? No. Own. Catalyst Game Labs. I'm not a majority stakeholder, but I am one of the owners.Semi-OT, but you work for a game company Hyper? Now that the forum rule against naming other products has crumbled away, you mind sharing? I'd like to support your company's product.
Most of my efforts are in convention support. Most of our developers and staffers are coastal. Our two major cons a year are in NE-Central US. Being as I'm in Chicago and in relatively close driving distance, that makes me "local". I'm normally in charge of our convention cartage (read: I'm the schmuck in the truck), uber-gopher, and supplies manager while at the con...being the only guy there with a car helps).
I'm also the lead geek wrangler for our web services and provisioning planning (basically we're the guys who decide how beefy our web server needs to be).
My regular day job is at a company up in Chicago. Even there I'm surrounded by gamers. My boss' stepfather used to run TSR, and he's in solid with the Champions RPG guys.
The first year I worked here my boss was like "You're going to GenCon and Origins this year right?".
Seeing as I'd been off work a year and working menial jobs (burning out in the nursing field SUCKS), I was like "Well, I dunno. Gotta check my finances."
"No, you're GOING to GenCon and Origins RIGHT? *NUDGE*NUDGE*"
"Uh. Yes?"
"GOOD!"
Now I have to hear the "The coolest boss EVER" stories at the con. I'm starting to get eye strain from the eye-rolling. But, it's true! My bosses are incredibly cool to work with. Getting paid to go to GenCon and Origins, outside of already getting hotel, swag and stipend just rules! -
Quote:Nonono. You don't seem to understand.Thank you for reminding me why I generally dislike and distrust corporations.
My company is a corporation. It's no more (or less) even than the next randomly sampled corporation.
This isn't about "corporations". It's about the manner in which any given corporation is run. Mine has the luxury, due to affable owners, of being able to run a loose ship (one of our newest products suffered a THREE YEAR delay, during which time INDUSTRY people were doing "Shut up and take my money!" at us).
For companies beholden to profit-oriented ownership, the rules are going to be different. It's not "evil". It just "is".
Sure, from an outside view, it can seem detestable. But you want to be paid for your time and effort right? You don't work for free do you? Investors don't go into an investment looking to get nothing out of it or, heavens forefend, lose money.
Now, if you still want to be all "Ebil Corporations! RARGH!", go ahead. I'm just saying it has no place here. -
Considering that I've kept two accounts open AND dropped enough on the market to keep another five open, I'd say the answer is "HELL YEAH!"
Granted, this wouldn't necessarily be a fiscal reality for a lot of current paying players. But still. Unfortunately the $15 price point is pretty standard across the industry and bumping it, especially on an older game, is bound to be a throat cutting maneuver. -
Quote:NCSoft are nothing but a bunch of bean counters. They provided the cash to run the game, but they're just enablers. The ones who ACTUALLY did all you say, are the dev team. Starting with Cryptic and ending with Paragon Studios. THEY are the ones who deserve respect. More so now because although we got knifed in the back, THEY got shot in the face.
Hey. Don't knock the guys doling out the cash. They're just as important as the guy with "the vision" or the guys doing the grunt labor.
Except they're the guys putting their OWN money where other guys' mouths are. It takes a fairly solid set of cojones to do that sort of thing. Even if most of the hierarchy is counting coins.
I'm not saying be lovey-dovey with them and throw oodles of cash their way "just because".
But at least be willing to give them the respect they deserve. -
I agree. NCSoft has been a good shepherd for the game.
But, as all shepherds know, eventually some of the sheep get eaten.
I'm sure this wasn't a decision they've come to easily or with little forethought.
Unfortunately, at the end of the day, they're a company that's in the business of making money. They're obligated to their investors and The Bottom Line.
Smaller, wholly owned companies can sit there and operate break-even year over year. But when you're beholden to investors, you pretty much HAVE to show a REAL profit.
I know this for a fact.
My company spent several years operating hand to mouth. We're doing a lot better now, but we can still get away with SOME modicum of shooting from the hip. Because it is a privately owned company and the owners are ALL outright fans who want to see the game continue.
For us, it's all monopoly money. We get to go to cons for, essentially "free", we get lots of nice swag, still waiting on the swooning fangirls though... If we ever actually see a dividend I'd be stunned.
We DO make money. We're a multi-million dollar company. But any profit is reinvested into growing the company or sitting in the bank, guarding against a "rainy day".
For public companies with "investors", well... The rules are COMPLETELY different.
They want to see a return on their money. Period. They don't care that "Game X is the raddest thing since nuking the magnetosphere!" They want to see their money grow. Otherwise they'd put it in the bank.
Nasty things happen to companies, and company officials, who ignore this tenet. -
Sitting around 1010 on Hyperstrike. A nice, binary number. At one point I was making a concerted effort to do all badges on him.
Then I realized what that entailed and that if I wanted to enjoy the rest of the game I'd never get it done.
It was exactly like it was after I made Eagle Scout almost as early as possible (back in the days when they had "time in rank" requirements).
Yeah. I was big.
Yeah. I was bad (well, in a good way).
Then I got my first National Eagle Society letter and saw guys who'd gotten ALL the merit badges...Dudes who had to wear TWO sashes to display them all.
You guys who pushed all the way on them have my abject admiration.
Also, if you want Bughunter, submit a bug "Game closing! This will completely break gameplay!"

The only thing more fun than beating up fascist schmucks, endlessly, is beating up NAZI schmucks, endlessly.
-
According to what I've seen (including info from BaBs), that doesn't seem to hold water.

Quote:Okay, let's be fair to NCSoft here.the game "went wrong" when Jack talked NC into publishing it when nobody else would touch it. Corporate skullduggery/malfeasance/incompetence (depending on which flavor of rumor you prefer) killed this game, it was nothing the devs did.
I know this isn't a popular sentiment right now but just go with me for a sec.
NCSoft has been a fairly good shepherd for CoH in the last 8 years. When Cryptic moved off to do "other things" that would have left CoH essentially static, Cryptic moved in, threw money at the problem and took over control of the game.
In that time (five years), with NCSoft at the reins, CoH has not only maintained, it's grown! They've thrown mad-money at the game, instead of just sitting back and siphoning it of all profit.
When they took over, Paragon had 16 people.
On Friday, they laid off over 80 people. And that's not counting the group of (mostly temporary) people they let go shortly after the roll-out of Freedom!
Does that HONESTLY sound like a company that just flat-out didn't give a damn about the property?
Not to me it doesn't.
Honestly, I think the bean-counters in charge (or with ownership stakes in the company) are pressuring NC to "trim fat" in the company in light of the recent quarterly non-earnings debacle.
Unfortunately, CoH was the odd man out for this.
Does it sucketh mightily? Hell yeah!
Is it understandable, given NC's perspective and position? Unfortunately. -
Quote:Unfortunately, the devs couldn't give us warning. They should of given us warning and asked us to spend more money. I would have bought more stuff to keep the game going.
Can someone confirm this stupid rumor about a COH2? I had someone mention this to me on facebook and I almost laughed.
They probably knew SOMETHING was up. But the impression is that they were caught as flat-footed by this as we were. -
Quote:You bought the physical media to quickly install the game and a time card with some swag.Pathetic attempt at an analogy.
Here's a better one: Let's say you love House. So you buy all the season's of House on DVD. Then Fox not only cancels House, but they remote activate software that erases all your DVDs so you can never watch House again.
That is what NCSoft is effectively doing.
If I want to play Civ2 I can loan it on my PC and play it. Age of Empires, Star Wars Rebellion. Heck if I go out and get a old PC with a floppy drive I can still play TIE Fighter.
But once NCSoft pulls the trigger I will NEVER be able to play City of Heroes again. Even though I bought a physical copy of the game I never really owned it.
I take issue with that. And yes, I am still bitter about House.
The game itself was never sold to you. Nor was it promised to you in perpetuity. You have been paying for access to the game. And, prior to Freedom, if you stopped paying, you stopped getting access to your virtual "stuff".
As I used to say years ago. "Rent to pwn". -
-
Let's be quite frank here.
While some may see the efforts being put out here and think "We're saved." The reality is that this is going to be an uphill battle all the way.
And yes, there's a very good chance that all the effort amounts to nothing.
But, at the end of it all, if everyone pulls together and does everything that they can, win or lose, we'll know we tried our hardest and regret NOTHING.
We'll either succeed or we'll walk away know that NOTHING could have saved the game. -
-
Quote:I almost gave away all my purples/pvp IOs but someone reigned me in.
Certainly would never delete anything I put time into, whether it's an MMO character or personal writing or whatnot.
Good advice Tony!
I sold a bunch of my ill-gotten gains and went nuts with prestige conversion.
That's okay though. I still have billions on other servers. -
Quote:Today, we're all in the good fight together. All petty battles are meaningless and we must all come together to save our very existence. These past few days, I've been touching base with people that, frankly, I've cussed at a lot more that you and said that there's no time for that now.
Just like the threats we've seen virtually played out in the Rikti War Zone, Dark Astoria, Pocket D and other such places, there comes a time when you take up the cause of people you never imagined you'd be working with and fight for the opportunity to argue over who the heroes are and who the villains are another day.
Darn it! MORE CO-OP CONTENT!
-
Yeah. I think I'm gonna shut up now. Just digging myself in here.
