Why should we be the only ones having fun?

Seriously though. We're in serious danger of outgrowing this planet of ours. Moreover, one big disaster and it's bye-bye for the human race.

While, on the whole, we're a net-negative impact on our world and could use a serious die-out to alleviate population pressure and run a skimmer through the gene pool, there are some good things about humanity that I'd like to survive.

4-6 billion years (about what this section of the solar system has left, barring some sort of disaster) seems like a REALLY long time, I'd rather we get our act together NOW, in the next century or two.

  6. Okay, ran an ITF post-patch tonight.

First mish the team captain COULD NOT enter missions.
Additionally, the Cimerora mini-map (and mission mini-maps) were completely barren of anything but MY green arrow (I couldn't see my teammates). I could track them as the "fog of war" painted out. But I couldn't see them.

I could still see the on-screen door indicator though. So I could at least fumble my way to the mission door.

At no time did *I* have issues entering a mission.

Anyhow. We decided to ditch and reform the TF.
This time I took the star.
Again, I couldn't see anything but myself on the minimaps. So it made it hard to keep track of teammates. I was playing a kit'ed-out Stone tank so I wasn't too worried.

In both instances of the TF, Mission #1 was prone to rubber-banding. Something I rarely have seen there before.

Mission #2 was less problematic on both instances. Didn't notice any additional lag or rubber-banding.

Mission #3, lag hill. I honestly couldn't tell the difference. I rarely have massive lag problems there. So the experience was no better or worse than usual. Granted, I HAVE, in the past, on older setups, had to sing "wish I was a slide show". But I haven't had to do it since the advent of Ultra Mode at least.

Mission #4 was fine. No lag issues noted. I still wish player characters won positioning push-fights with NPCs. It's a pain in the butt to position myself for maximum damage and then have the NPCs push me 10 feet off.

Nice. You may see a little trouble tanking groups with really vicious defense debuffs (massed Cimerorans, etc). But eating an occasional purple here and there should get you through no problem. For everything else, you're about as unkillable as you can get. And what does get by your defenses and resists should regen quite safely.
  8. Obliteration: Quad
    Scirocco: Triple and Dam/End
    Multi-Strike: Triples
    Eradication: Proc

    61% Acc
    96% Dam
    96% EndRed
    40% Rech
Chance to proc for a different damage type in case you run into something that doesn't give a damn about fire.

You also get 10% regen out of it and a bit of extra sleep resist.
  9. I'm using the paid-for version of AVG. Barring a small issue with a false positive on CoH a few years ago, I've had nothing but good luck from it.

As to software firewalls. You can purchase different "suites" that perform this function. I dislike "suite" software though. Usually the various (invariably system resource intensive) programs are tied together in such a way that if one has an issue, it cripples everything on the system.

I've sworn off EVER using ZoneAlarm ever again. I've had way (WAY WAY) too many problems with ZA crashing and burning and taking my system with it (damaging the network stack so that even uninstalling ZA can't restore connectivity). When it works, it's a nice piece of software. But it's just too damned flaky to trust.

This can also be a problem with other software program controllers (software "firewalls") as well.

I prefer just to use the default Windows firewall. By itself, it's frigging useless. But I own a very nice pro-grade router/firewall that gives me very fine-grained control over what comes into and out of my internal network.

As has been noted above. Just about ANY AV will EVENTUALLY let something nasty through. Antivirus technology is a "reactive" response system. It has to KNOW about something before it can block it. AFAIK there's no "proactive" AV technology out there.

    Well, DUH.

    One problem though.

The first part is easily possible. The second is an impossibility in the game.

    Quote:
2> HP, Def, Resist, Regen *blend* to affect Total Survival.
Yep. Had your first point not been marred by the fact that it's essentially arguing apples and fairy dust.

    Quote:
For point #1, simple math clearly proves that - Dead vs Full Health is about as clear cut as it can be.
Sure. Dropping a nuke on a phone booth with 6000 people jammed into it will kill 6000 people. That's quite clear-cut too.

    Quote:
Point #2 really muddies the waters, because basically it means that mixing those various attributes to the degree your AT can, will be (for practical in-game purposes) similarly effective. As has been pointed out, ALL ATs can do that with all of those attributes to varying degrees.
The only problem is, YOUR FIRST ARGUMENT IGNORES THIS FACT.

    Quote:
I find it amusing that everyone regaling me with tales of how their AT's survive the Pylon Challenge also point out that they have *significant* amounts of regen which actually make it possible.
So for you, "significant" means "anything more than zero"?

    O-kaaaaay!

    Imagine that.

    Quote:
Why? Because the devs evidently understand the concept I'm trying to illustrate significantly better, it appears, than many of the responders in this thread.
No, your concept is easily understandable. It's merely pointless because you're trying to justify one power set with lots of regen over another power set with the artificial (and impossible) situation of NO regen.

Your point is not incorrect. Merely useless.

As if you were telling me that your brute was tougher because you could kill L1 snakes faster than my brute could kill Hamidon.

    Go Figure.

Nobody's demanding that Paragon solicit feedback from the community or that creative control be ceded to the community. But, more and more lately, the community has been presented with fait accompli and no real chance to offer input at a stage where it might actually do some good.

Been there. Done that. My build is soft-capped with one enemy in range. As such, he doesn't get hit all that much. I've basically camped in front of a pylon for over an hour on my tank.

With my brute, he's soft-capped with a single enemy in range. I've never really stood him in the pylons for more than about 10 minutes (boredom). Again, no appreciable loss of HP that regen didn't take care of.

    Quote:
With only a 5% or so ToH against you, the Pylon will still kill you. It may well take some time, maybe quite a lot of time, but the end result is not in doubt.
ONLY if you somehow aren't regenerating ANY hit points. My Inv/SS doesn't take enough damage over time to kill him.

    Quote:
It won't kill the SS/WP brute with high regen, no matter how long it stands there.
If he has a modest amount of defense, nope.

    Quote:
In my specific case, it won't kill my SS/Inv either, but that's because it *doesn't* have low regen. It absolutely *does* kill my softcapped Night Widow (even with ~12 HP/s regen). If that number was a little bit higher, say 20 or so, it would probably be fine unless two unlucky back to back hits occurred (it's also squishier than either of the brutes)
Yep. No layered resists. Resulting in an eggshell (crack the defenses and it's all over).

    Quote:
As I said in my very first post, BOTH of these Brutes are PvE DemiGods, and we're splitting hairs. But SS/WP *can* have complete immunity in circumstances where the SS/Inv cannot, and CDF affects it far more than it does my SS/WP.
There is no such thing as "complete immunity".

Yeah. Creative's 64-bit driver support for older devices is for ****.

    6-slotting Hasten? YeahNO.
  21. Well, the one thing with Fire/Rads, your BIG control/damage-doer is Hot Feet + Choking Cloud.

Ranged damage kinda is at cross purposes with you there.

Getting capped defense of any sort while maximizing recharge is going to be tough.

I'd recommend building for maximum recharge and control effects (Stun/Hold/etc). Your damage won't be PHENOMENAL. But if the enemy spends the entire time choking...

    Held >> Stunned >> Defense >> Resist >> Heal

    No Damage (Most desirable)
    Damage Avoidance (Desirable)
    Damage Repair (Undesirable)
  22. Okay, the set bonus in Stamina?

    WASTE OF SLOTS.

Simply slotted simple, common EndMod IOs will give you higher recovery than is affored by the 1.5% recovery bonus from that L20 set.

Go 2 common 50's and a Chance for +End proc from PerfShifter.

Your main problem is that, while your resting endurance consumption is not bad, your combat End use is ASTRONOMICAL. Most of the sets you have slotted have ATROCIOUS End reduction properties.

So, while you're out of combat, you're going to be fine, but in combat, you're going to be sucking down blues and praying to god Consume comes back up soon.

Consume is under a minute when Hasten is up. But you're NOT perma-hasten.

Your defenses actually aren't all that bad for a Fire tank.

I'd also advise you to rethink your slotting for Weave.
Right now it's really overslotted (5 slots in Weave is NUTS).
4 MAX, if you're including an LOTG +Rech. Either slot straight 3-slot defense or frankenslot Def/End. Or, if money's no object, 3 slots (2 Enzymes and the LOTG).

Take those slots and toss them in Taunt. Right now Taunt is woefully underslotted. Or put one in Build Up. If you're going to put that many slots in a +To Hit power, you may as well six-slot it and enjoy the defense boost.

    Health is ridiculously overslotted.

While I'm not claiming this build is great or anything, look at the way it's constructed.

It's overall resting End consumption is higher, yes. But the combat end consumption is 2-4x LOWER.

Some of your resists are slightly lower, but your overall defenses are boosted.

Also note that I've swapped Musculature for Nerve. While your damage output is reduced, your native accuracy is perfectly acceptable now for your ST attacks and defense is given a small kick in the pants.

So, you're doing slightly less damage, your resists are almost identical, you're HARDER to hit, and your endurance levels are SUSTAINABLE.

I didn't say it wasn't a plus. The thing with a High Def build though, is that it simply
doesn't come into play as much (if you don't get hit, resist does nothing).

The /WP typically gets hit much more often, so it is a much more vital part of
its overall defense strategy because it allows the regen to keep pace with the
    incoming damage.

Let me give an extremely simplistic example that will demo what I mean and
hopefully clarify the "immunity" concept as well.

    Consider our two Brutes.

    SS/WP: 2000HP, 70/s Regen, 50% S/L resist -- No Def (for simplicity)
    SS/Inv: 3000HP, 45% Def, 60% S/L resist -- No Regen (for simplicity)

We're gonna gloss slightly because I want to focus on the primary core points
for the ATs rather than quibble over to-hit floors, or idle HP recovery etc.

Each is going to mock a Lt. (ie. Ridicule him, but not kill him). The Lt, of course,
will be very annoyed and pummel said Brute mercilessly, because he's used to
pounding squishies, and doesn't tolerate that sort of verbal abuse...

Lt: Melee Attack does 600 Dmg. 5 Second recharge. Standard 50% ToH

Let's see what happens after, say 25 minutes (1500 seconds)...

    Code:
Mob Attk Attk Total Dmg HP
Brute HP/Def/Reg/Res ToH Count Hits Dmg Taken Recv Result
    -------------------------------------------------------------
    SS/Inv 3000/45/--/60 5 300 15 9000 3600 -- DEAD
    SS/WP 2000/--/70/50 50 300 150 90000 45K 105K FULL
    -------------------------------------------------------------
Hmmm... after 25 mins, assuming neither Brute does anything, the SS/Inv is in
the hospital - despite higher def, higher res and higher HP, while the SS/WP
    is at Full Health...

Even though the SS/WP actually took 10X the damage, his very high regen
along with his resist was able to keep pace with the incoming damage over
    time.

Unfortunately, the 5% ToH floor, along with no regen at all, guaranteed that it's
simply a matter of time and attrition for the SS/Inv Brute.

Now, there's zero doubt that both Brutes would win the battle had they lifted
a finger to fight, but the SS/WP has complete immunity - No matter how long
the battle goes on, the Lt can *never* kill the SS/WP in that scenario.

    Sure, that can happen.

Consider what would happen if we gave the Lt. in our example a 5% -Def
    buff, stackable for each hit.

Well, ToH would start to approach the 95% ceiling in fairly short order

Very Bad news for the SS/Inv, but a complete non-issue for the SS/WP,
(in this instance) because even at 100% ToH, the Lt. couldn't beat the regen.

However, you can see that if the Lt put out a little bit more damage, it would
begin to be a problem for the SS/WP, so, yes, it can indeed be subject to a
CDF problem, but in general that is far more severe and troublesome to the
/Inv than it is for the /WP, and in many cases, it doesn't matter at all to the
/WP if he's fighting his preferred S/L mob types.

On the other hand, if the Lt. had a -regen buff that tanked it to 0, then the
SS/WP is in very deep doo-doo.

Hopefully, the example shows, conceptually, why I like /WP over /Inv provided
you can get a high regen rate. It's also the very same reason that the Devs
seriously nerfed regen sets way, way back... Immunity is as close to an "I-Win"
button as you can get, which is why very few AT's can get away with it.

SS/WP is one of the ones that can.

    Regards,
    4

One small problem. Your argument is completely invalid.

You're relying on an impossible scenario to make your point.

NO character in the game has NO regeneration. Plain and simple.

You may as well have posited a scenario and said "And the */Inv has zero endurance recovery (for simplicity's sake)."

As such, the argument isn't even worth the time that was spent formulating it, let alone being read and rebutted.

Even outside of DP with unslotted Health, an Inv tanker is still regenerating damage (roughly 7.8 HP/sec). An Inv Brute is still regenerating (6.25/sec). An Inv Scrapper is still regenerating (5.5/sec).

So, unslotted, and not taking DP, over the course of 25 minutes:

    Tank Regen: 11,700
    Brute Regen: 9,375
    Scrapper Regen: 8,250

As you can see, in ANY of these cases, they can all, unslotted, survive ALL the incoming damage (2-3 times over depending on AT), barring a massive damage spike. But, again, a massive damage spike would screw a WP tanker too.

It gets even worse for you when you factor in Dull Pain, even if you don't slot it with Heals, it still bumps regen even if you only slot for recharge.

So, apparently, Inv/SS, SS/Inv, and */Inv are the ones that can too!

And, as has been argued when talking in the defender forums:

    Defense >> Resist >> Heal/Regen

So I'll take being darn near unhittable and taking piddly damage my "meager" regeneration can still easily overcome over having high regen and hoping to God that I don't get hit too much.
