Quote:Free pizza and looking like a genius to mom & dad. After all the **** you put them through when you were a kid.I chalk this up in the same category as bringing home munchies and a 6-pack of adult beverage, settle into my chair, turn on the TV to watch the game and find out that the cable is out or worse, only that channel. Best laid plans ...
Hardware crap happens. I spent 3 hours trying to install my parents new DSL modem and getting it to work with their router. Worked plugged in directly to PC, not to router. Eventually it worked itself out but damn was I annoyed and frustrated. Upside I got free pizza.
DOUBLE BONUS!

Quote:That's if the marines let them get close. NOT going to happen. Mows them down and has some casualties. Mostly guys stubbing their toes.Pitched battle, open land - Marines will win, but sustain heavy losses (you can reload only so fast, and the concept of death was different to Legionaires than to modern man, insofar as sense of self is not as finely tuned and men of the Legions felt that it was their duty to follow orders and die)
Uhm. Why? They have ARTILLERY? Just shell them to death. Why waste time, manpower and lives trying to dig them out?Quote:Siege, Romans entrenched - Marines will break through defenses with some losses
No. Because any probes sent out by the marines (think tanks and armored vehicles, as well as air support) are just going to cut a bloody swath of death into whatever they encounter with minimal losses. Maybe some chipped paint.Quote:Siege, Marines entrenched - Romans will starve the Marines into either making a break or preemptive strikes on Roman defensive emplacements
Sure. Where the marine wins is in killing his opponent before his opponent can get within killing distance of him.Quote:This is NOT a slam dunk. The fighting trim of a Legionaire places them on the same level as a Marine. The same training programs and the same PT, even similar amounts to carry on patrol.
Sorry, but human walls are bullet and grenade degradable. Helicopters can fly out of range of ANY of their weapons. And their artillery pieces can deliver munitions with foot-level accuracy on locations the crews can't even see.Quote:The Marines would win, under most any circumstance. But, if one thinks that they're all going to survive with nothing but scratches, dysentery, and a profound sense of accomplishment, one would be gravely mistaken.
Essentially what'd have to happen is the marines would have to be literally dropped into the middle of the massed legions of Rome with no warning for this to be even a close fight.
The problem is, the Marines have LEARNED all those tactics. Plus everything that came after in the next 2000 years.Quote:There is a REASON Roman military tactics are STILL taught in modern times.
Only a damn fool would even DREAM it'd be anything other than a one-sided slaughter with the Marines doing said slaughtering. -
Quote:With claws fire you get the resistance toggle, a self heal and the better damage aura before level 6.
Not sure how power surge and energize are relevant when claws/elec is supposedly so much better from 1-50.
And once you get burn you can pretty much start doing regular fire farms.
Using claws/electric with CEBR you have no need of a heal and get the resist toggle as well. Most of the time your defenses are so high you're rarely hit. And when you're hit, your resist is so high you barely take any damage. Healing up after the fact comes out a poor third option. Especially if you have to interrupt your attack chain to heal.
HOWEVER, with Electric Armor you get two nice clickables that follow you into the map:
Energize: Endurance Discount AND +Regen (not Heal, so the effect is ongoing).
Power Surge: MASSIVE +Resist (a Godmode whose crash usually comes AFTER you've left the map. And if it doesn't, blasts an EMP hold, making it a relatively safe crash).
Add to that Hasten and it's all gold baby. -
Quote:Seebs, thanks very much for taking the time to respond.
I appreciate your help.
I've already installed it in the C: drive. I'm guessing it's okay to uninstall and then re-download it and re-install it in a folder I create?
(I.e. I'm sure I just can't move the contents from the C drive to the J drive? Or can I?)
Sorry for the bonehead questions. And again...thank you!
What, if anything, would stop you from using drive-cloning software to transplant your system from a spinning-disk drive to the SSD?
This would be a simpler, more elegant solution than uninstalling and reinstalling.
Moreover, your ENTIRE system would benefit from a speed-up then. Not just CoH. -

Quote:The thing is, a standard MEU has more than enough ordnance to annhihilate the entirety of the Roman legions several times over.By replacing their losses with more men?
If the Marines had a limitless ammo supply or if the Romans were going to be intimidated by the technology and bow down, this thread and this conversation would be pointless. I have to assume those two variables are false.

If you can tell me that a force armed like this could NOT easily wipe out a sixth of a million men (armed with spears, short swords, and big shields), you'll at least get a laugh out of me. -
You're thinking maximum effective range on a point-sized target. Yeah. That's roughly 550m with an M16.
Maximum effective range on an area (think vehicle sized) target is about 800m.
These both have everything to do with the shooter's ability to sight and hit a target and nothing to do with the actual lethality of the round.
Absolute maximum range (where the bullet is still traveling fast enough to kill a target ) is much greater.
So the Marines don't even particularly need to be aiming at anything. They simply set up a field of fire and pretty much anything walking into it is dead. Plain and simple.
The problem is, the Romans are going to be dead WELL before they get a ballista towed into that range.Quote:Roman Ballistas had much higher range but was most effective at 500 yards
Actually, probably not. Hell, the hummer could probably just drive INTO the ranks and run people over without much fuss.Quote:Romans would likely take out a Humvee fairly easily used in that way...
What does a hummer call a shield wall formation? Speed bump. -
Quote:Remember the plates in a vest are designed to spread out the force of bullets. Stuff moving at high velocity and with a very small impact area.So crazy wrong.
Weapon ranges of thousands of yards - the Romans would never even close to combat.
And the comments on the armor... a plate that can deflect or reduce the impact of modern alloy rounds woudn't stop a man shoved piece of low tech metal?
Honestly I'm not certain what'd happen if you whacked it with the edge of a sword. You'd probably, eventually, snap the plate. And you'd still have a load of blunt force trauma translating through the armor since it's not really designed to disperse that sort of force around and away from the body. -
Quote:Honestly. If you limit it to hand-to-hand, yeah. The Romans would likely win eventually. If you put the two groups against each other on a field of battle the Roman Empire would win as the Marines have like no defense against the Roman Legions...even though the could probably kill a good chunk of the Roman Army.
If you're talking "give the Marines their rifles"?
THEN things get more dicey. Now the Roman shields might or might not be adequate protection against 5.56 and 7.62 mm rounds.
Now, grenades (thrown or launched)? The a phalanx attack formation isn't going to do the Romans ANY good there.
Helicopters? Have you SEEN the kind of damage a group of SuperCobras can do? Hellfires? Sidewinders? A FRIGGIN' 20mm GATLING GUN!
Now I refer to Marines as "cannon fodder". But in this situation, they'd win. Plain and simple. Only a ridiculous tactical blunder would make it otherwise. -

Quote:Servers were down when I got home at 5PM (Central). So I made a run up to the comics shop. Only two books this week.I would be interested in knowing what character(s) and what server(s) Hyperstrike, Techbot Alpha, Memphis Bill, et al, played last night.
Got back about 5:30.
While the Live servers were down I logged into the Beta server to see if I could catch a costume code. Didn't, oh well. New character Hyperbetastrike now exists if I want to play him (at least until the next beta purge). Tooled around on him and got him up to 6.
Virtue came back up first and was the only public server available for about 20 minutes. After training up on Beta, I logged in there to see how the server was. Seemed okay when I got on. Cleared some marketing slots and logged.
Read a book for a bit.
Came back and tested Protector (my home server) and it was running. Logged in on one of my scrappers that I don't play much (Mighty Pi, 105 hours of play in 38 months vs Hyperstrike with over 1500). Was able to get in on the regular weekly MOSTF run that Impyre does every Thursday the servers are available. We started a bit late, but because we were rocking mostly tanks/brutes/scrappers we opted for a zerg style of play and rocked the MO in just under an hour (with a short 10 minute break while Imp headed to Atlas Park to beat on some Warworks).
I then played Pi through part of a ship raid, and then a Lambda. Did a bit of marketing on him and then logged in to Hyperstrike for a couple minutes to clean out his sold stuff and check his time-in-game (which is how I know he has 1538 played hours on him).
Had some problems with my buffs and combat numbers during the STF and Lambda and a bit of Lambda lag. But nothing retoggling on occasion didn't fix.
So yeah. I got diverted for a while. But I eventually wound up being able to "go back home".
Your inclination would be incorrect.Quote:My inclination would be to believe that they weren't in the pool of those who were forced to look elsewhere for entertainment, so what does it matter to them? How many level 4's were you guys playing last night? -
Quote:Oh agreed! I think, at the very least, they need a review of their implementation policies and procedures. "Just toss in this new hardware and HEY PRESTO! DEAD SERVERS!" is a really craptastic way to try out upgrades. That said, I don't think the devs deserve some exemption from our expectations of available service because they experienced technical difficulties. Technical difficulties is an explanation, not an excuse.
It doesn't preclude me from being sympathetic. I've been in hardware transition situations where there WAS massive testing, yet when it was brought to the live setup, stuff blew up in my face (there IS a reason my company's naming scheme is "Horror and Monster movies").
I also work in IT and simply because hardware upgrades fail doesn't mean that you failed in your job. It simply means there were other issues at play that you may or may not have been able to do something about.Quote:It's the job of at least some of the folks at Paragon/NCSoft to avoid technical difficulties when doing things like this. It's understandable that they are not perfect and sometimes will experience difficulties anyway, but let's face it - when that happens they have failed at their job. I work in IT.
Agreed.Quote:No one expects me or my team to be perfect, and our system up-time targets reflect that. When we screw up, though, we still take a hit on our reviews, and quite possibly our financial reward at the end of year, even if we make our uptime targets. Outages are allowed, but that doesn't mean they're forgiven.
What I'm saying is that "Wanting to play in a specific manner" is not a problem. "Demanding to play in a specific manner" in the face of unforeseen events making it impossible and demanding compensation when told that it's currently non-viable, but given options is just poor form. I could use stronger words than "poor form". But you're making an attempt to be civil.Quote:Edit: If your rebuttals are focused at the people who want compensation for this, I have no problem with that. If so, though, I think your arguments against that have fallen down a slippery slope into territory that are making other people, whether or not they actually demand compensation, say "hey, that doesn't sound right". That's certainly where I'm coming from. -
Quote:Okay let me be a bit more specific. No, actually, the problem is you being a belligerent jerk. If you're not interested in having an actual discussion even when you're offered an argument in civility and will instead elect to throw insults in my face, then you're not worth debating with at all.
I'm using "you" in a non-specific manner (at least in my reply to you Sam).
I'm saying that, if the game still gives these players options. The fact that THEY *CHOOSE* not to exercise these options returns the onus of the issue to them.
I'm not denigrating them for wanting to play in a singular style. But raging about it, demanding compensation, etc, when other options are still open to them is just poor form.
As to me being a belligerent jerk. How's that any different from every other day of the last 38 months?

Quote:No. While the initial problem is, yes, the hardware is causing problems. The initial argument was simply "I can't get in and play. We're owed something."The problem in this case is hardware. I think saying a player is the problem when they aren't willing to make a new character on a server they don't intend on playing on versus playing another game is idiotic.
Then, when the servers started coming back up and having problems, those ragging on the issue shifted gears into "I can't play *THIS* specific character! We're owed something."
Maybe I just need to grow a thicker skin, but my tolerance for this kind of childishness is quite low. -
Quote:No. There's nothing wrong with it. But nerdraging on the devs because of technical difficulties precluding you from playing said characters is something entirely different from "I want to play this character at this time".
There's nothing wrong with wanting to play a specific character, or on a specific server. MMOs are about investment in characters. It's an option to spread that investment around, but it is completely reasonable to focus that investment in fewer characters or in a specific place. Consider this example: how many people do you think have a dedicated badge character on every server?
The former is happening, not the latter.
This is the crux of the issue at hand. -

Protector was up and running mostly fine. There are some anomalies on teams in with combat numbers. But, for the most part, everything was copacetic.
Ran an MOSTF in under an hour. Only the team lead had lag issues.
Then jumped in on a ship raid. Was fine there.
Then bounced into an 8 man Lambda. A little laggy. But nothing severe.
No. You'd think they'd fix the other ones first and pay the most attention to bringing the most populace one last, making sure there were no show-stoppers on the other servers.Quote:Youd think theyd fix the one with the most people therefor customers first. -
Quote:"Living in the moment".I humbly submit that is a better indication of performance in the immediate future than going back half a decade.
But then, I live in the moment, which, on Infinity, is terribly laggy with intermittent map connection loss for everyone. But Beastyle's promised a War Walker in Atlas Park, so there we are.
That's a novel expression for "Attention span of an *OOH! SHINY!*"
Unfortunately more and more people are afflicted with this problem every day on the Inter....*SHINY!!!* -

Quote:Yet going by two consecutive weeks in which major hardware upgrades have happened is going to give you indications of future results?Going back to 2004 to predict what will happen with the game's massive changes in the coming month? Can you say past performance is not indicative of future results?
Okaaay.
