Quote:I have some familiarity with anti-cheating methods on computers. So I know why they want/need to have access to memory, files on the drive, etc. They need to be able to query their software and have it puke back it's specifics and what it's doing in memory to be able to tell that it's been tampered with. Thing is, they NEED tacit permission to do so.Here's my problem with the wording of the EULA: None of what you write above is what it says. You're projecting a motivation onto NCSoft and then using that made-up motivation to justify the wording.
They're GOING to keep the wording vague. Because they run a risk of being caught with a corner case if they try to spell it out exactly or they have to write an encyclopedia set to cover each and every specific scenario on a case by case basis.
This is standard boilerplate.
And I'm no more projecting a motive onto NCSoft than Westley is.
Also, use Occam's Razor. What's more likely?
That the company needs butt-coverage as it researches allegations of cheating?
Or that it's some huge *CONSPIRACY!!!*to deprive you of your privacy and peep into your life?
What the EULA says is that NCSoft, at it's own discretion (or not) reserves the right to monitor user traffic relevant to CoH on any forum it comes across (or not) and take action (or not) as they see fit. It also grants them discretion (or not) to utilize their software as a means to look at any hardware or software or data that's used to play their game and act (or not) on what they find (or don't find).Quote:Please understand that I am not necessarily disagreeing with your summation or disputing the correctness of it. The EULA, taken strictly on its own and judged on strictly what it says, is not nearly that benign, though.
Yes, it COULD be used to trojan our computers. Yes, it COULD be used to spy on our ostensibly "private" conversations. But, as noted, the likelihood is vanishingly small. Moreover, their EULA does NOT trump local, state, and federal law. If they do something that's illegal, the fact that their EULA says they can doesn't protect them.
Trust me. I'm fully cognizant of the consumer and privacy abuse issues that could come up because of this. While I'm not particularly happy with NCSoft's marketing-gated development cycle right now, they have enough of my trust right now that this sort of language (which I've seen in EULAs for online services before) doesn't even raise an eyebrow.Quote:As gamers we let this kind of thing slide because most of us feel that our personal risk is so miniscule that it does not matter. We can safely ignore the fact that we are agreeing to let NCSoft do whatever they want, whenever they want, however they want, for any reason that they want or, conversely, for them to decide to do nothing at all or to even be inconsistent in their actions if they choose to and to do so without having to justify any of their actions or inaction. We tell ourselves that it doesn't apply to good citizens and that "we" are good citizens. Accessing the game service is more important than worrying about how the publisher of the game service might potentially misbehave.
Isn't that sort of, more or less just indicating you're NOT?Quote:I'm waiting for the first ragequit over the clause specifying that you're mentally competent to play the game, myself.
{NCSoft} You must agree that you are mentally competent

Quote:Okay let's look at this without the WALL OF SHOUT....and this is why.
This is a gross violation of my privacy and civil rights, and I will not subject myself to this. I will be unsubscribing permanently as soon as I send this message. I'm posting this so that whoever in NCSoft may see it that may change this. If you take this out, I may continue to subscribe in the future. But as it stands, I'm done. I've been paying for the past seven years almost, and for the last two or three without even playing most of the time. No more.
So you're ticked that they don't want you to:Quote:You consent to the foregoing monitoring and acknowledge that NCsoft may conduct such monitoring, including but not limited to monitoring in-Game communications and Message Boards provided by NCsoft as well as third-party Message Boards and the like. You also acknowledge that NCsoft may take any action, or no action whatsoever, based on such monitoring, including but not limited to action under Section 5, and that NCSoft has no obligation to explain any decision to take any action, or no action whatsoever, based on such monitoring.
(d) NCSoft has the right, but no obligation, to monitor operation of any service, content or software at any time and in any matter, including but not limited to monitoring communications and communications interfaces, storage devices, random access memory or cpu processes related to hardware you use with the game. Such monitoring may also include, but is not limited to, monitoring for the purposes of detecting software under section 8(c) or 8(e). You consent to the foregoing monitoring and acknowledge that ncsoft may, at any time, and in any manner, communicate any information between hardware you use with the game and any mechanism NCSoft may choose for such communications. You also acknowledge that as a result of such monitoring NCSoft may in its sole and absolute discretion take any action, or no action whatsoever, including but not limited to:
- Changing any portion of the service, content or software;
- Seeking recourse against you by way of any proceeding NCSoft deems appropriate under the circumstances; and/or
- Determining that you are not in compliance with all provisions of this agreement and terminating your account under section 3(b) or section 3(c). NCSoft has the right, but no obligation, to provide you with notice before such termination.

With thousands of people playing this game (all at the same time) across multiple servers, why in the name of Bob would they actually decide to just spy on you and use the game client to rifle through your porn collection? I won't say the chances of someone abusing this don't exist. But the likelihood of it actually happening is vanishingly small. And if it did, you'd have legal recourse regardless of what the EULA says since browsing your filesystem beyond the scope of the game and attached apps falls under CF&A.
This is standard "cover their butt" boilerplate. Mostly it's to head off complaints by people whose accounts were shut down for gross violations and prevent illegitimate chargebacks through proper documentation of misconduct. -
I was still doing nursing at the time. It was one of my off days, and since I work nights, I was naturally crashed out.
My brother comes down and tries to wake me up and I shooed him off.
He came down again and tried telling me that "Someone had blown up the WTC".
I still didn't open my eyes. I figured he was drunk and watching the History Channel about the '93 bombing.
Then he's like "No man! Planes are falling outta the sky!"
So I got up and went and had a good look...
I have a couple friends who were going to school in that area at that time. Scared the living crap outta them. One of whom was never quite the same again afterward.
One of my uncles actually missed a flight out to NY for a job interview.
Needless to say he didn't get the job. Strangely enough he wasn't upset about it at all... The company lost one of their offices when the tower came down though...
And, quite honestly, I'm still surprised that the government of the time wasn't pressured into nuking a little jerkwater country we call Afghanistan into a bubbling pool of radioactive glass. From what I remember of the time, EVERYONE wanted the someone(s) responsible DEAD. And they wanted them that way ON SEPTEMBER 10TH!
To all the people who've had their lives altered (or ended) because of the horrific events of that day, you have my utmost sympathies.
To the heroes generated by that event, I honor you even in the midst of wishing there had been no need.
And to Osama Bin-Laden and all the other sick SOB's that perpetrated this. Hope they're turning the furnace up for you in Hell today. -

Likely this is something on Virtue SPECIFICALLY that they would need to fix. -
Note: Click on the images for the full-sized ones. WARNING! 1920x1200!
Well, finally got sick of a little three room base for my SG on Virtue. So I tossed 175 million inf at it and got down to business.

It's now a FOUR room base!
But it's more functional now. I actually have more than two telepads.
And, since I had some time on my hands, I got a bit fancy.

Now people have done "bird cages" with arcane telepads before.
But it kinda struck me that I'd actually used multiple forms of floating to wind up with this final design.
- The telepads are floated due to abusing perspective and "shoving" them off a 2-layer floor and back to the wall over a 0-level floor. From there, I deleted the floor down to 1 layer.
- The stairs are floated and stacked using the hanging lamp trick.
- The beacons are floated by replacing 1 layer of floor, and using a cubicle to float out from the wall.
In fact, the only type of floating I DIDN'T use was desk stacking.

As I said, this sort of thing has been done before. But I thought some of the newer players might find this sort of thing interesting. -
As a heart attack. Hell, serious as a heart attack in the middle of a stroke while falling off the Empire State Building into a spike-laced flaming pool of nuclear waste.
They're NOT "allowed" to. The only reason these groups get away with it is that there are more of them than there are eyes to watch the game. But, when they're reported, they're booted. Most of them are sweatshops in various far-eastern countries with dozens of "throwaway" accounts grinding to make inf that gets fed back to a distributor.Quote:Then why are they allowed to advertise in-game?
You don't want sweatshop labor making your Nikes. Why the heck would you want it making fake money in a game for you?
Delete it. Not only is it enticing you to an illicit activity, it's also a possible vector for malware, and if nothing else, let's them know that your e-mail account is good, putting you on a list they can sell to spammers.Quote:I get in-game email all the time.
Paragon Studios (and NCSoft) don't allow 3rd party "gold sellers" in the game. They don't let them get mentioned by name in the forums. They want nothing to do with such a nasty market.Quote:I is confused.
Yet it persists.
Why? Because some dumb slob is too lazy to just go out and play a damn game?
Note: Not calling YOU a dumb slob. You just didn't know any better. Now you do.
Put an eyeball on the marketing forum. It's quite educational and can help alleviate any money crunch you might be feeling. And who knows? You might fool around and get rich!Quote:Maybe I'll get lucky and get a purple drop to pay for the whole thing. -
Quote:Was reminded of a sad version of the Red Nose day special.I liked the character interaction and kick-but older Amy. The episode should have been called "Rory's Choice."
Though, we had more slow moving faceless/masked foes that kill on touch. Didn't we just have that last episode... again?

Okay guys and girls (and huges)!
Haven't been posting on this in a while, mostly because I've been acting like a lazy idiot. As a result, we haven't seen a lot of new blood in a while. Let's see if we can change that.
Figured I'd let you all know that the Freedom Fire/Rads group is still up and running every Monday night at 9PM Eastern. If you've never played with a group of Fire/Rads, come on down! If you have, come on back! -

Sorry he's gone. But hey, when you arrive and have one of these waiting for you...

Hope to see him in his next regeneration... -
Quote:Thing is. More drops is simply going to shift the problem from raw inf influx to more returns on the market from recipe and salvage drops. The economy of this game is completely broken.
Far more influence comes into the system than what leaves - this is a major problem in any economy whether they be in a mmo or in real life.
The inflation can be fixed by either reducing the amount of influence coming into the game or increasing the rate at which it leaves.
I suggest doing both.
We have the option of turning off our experience and gaining more influence. I propose doing something similar, but the opposite. Give us the ability to turn off our influence gain and in return, double our drop rates. All recipes have twice the chance of dropping (including purples and pvp IOs), vanguard merits and architect tickets drop twice as fast too.
This not only halts the influence brought into the economy but it also gives us more to sell on the marketplace - further utilizing the biggest inf sink in the game and increasing the outflow of revenue.
Edit: Just noticed the typo in the title. Won't let me edit it - fail lol.
Already I can cap my recipes and salvage in a few short x8 sessions on my tank (who's at current max-salvage limits).
What I'd like is an option to reduce inf earnings and boost prestige earnings. In addition to cutting inf generation, it'll also give a boost to players trying to build themselves a base that's more than just the entry room and an oversight center. -
Quote:Bummer!I would like to thank all of you that have inspired me over the many years of building and designing bases. Bases were my love of this game for many years, but over the last year and a half of waiting for anything to happen I have just unsubscribed my account of 78 months. Seeing all of the wonderful things people have done with bases and to see how I have inspired others to create amazing bases. All the feed back on the You Tube stacking videos has been more than I ever hoped for. From all the countless hours in the base editor and all the base tours I have enjoyed every second of my time playing this game. I will look in time to time to see if anything happens with bases but for now im off to do other things.
Thanks again and Happing building,

[QUOTE=cohRock;3862225]Incorrect concerning the "eggshell" characterization. My experience playing on Beta is that SR tank may be 2nd to Stone in survivability. Sort of the anti-stone in one sense though -- SR's get Quicken.

Okay I know you're joking.
Sorry but even RIDICULOUS amounts of defense isn't a complete "defense".
With enough enemies the "lucky shot" effect takes over. Enough people whacking you by luck of the roll will be enough to whittle you down. Even with resistance going up from Lucky.
If they're doing monstrous damage on top of that they'll spike right past the resistance building mechanism in Lucky.
You can go take Tough, to give you better resistance for basic S/L. But my characterization of an eggshell still stands. -

Quote:The "You hear what HE said about your momma?" power?Which is why I think Invul should get a power that dumps aggro on a selected teammate: Target the team member and the power forces them to emit a 1000 foot radius PBAoE Mag 99 Taunt. It would be great tool for handing off aggro on BAF runs and disciplining unruly Scrappers.
-
Basically the devil is in the details.
BOTH are absolutely PHENOMENAL (and complete friggin' overkill) for 99% of the game when IO'ed out properly.
As to survivability, it's really easy to conjure up a corner case where either will come out on top. Let's not and say we did.
In terms of burst damage and taunt aura, Invuln has the edge.
In terms of psi and unresistable damage Willpower has the edge.
Which is better?
And the answer is: BURRITO! -
Quote:The thing that weirds me out is the amount of memory. Most of the 6800 series are 1GB or higher. Are you really running a HD 6800 series card?
If so, there aren't a lot of cards out there that are better.
Source
That chart is a bit outdated, but it shows that depending on which card you are actually running (6850/6870) you probably won't really notice an upgrade unless you go super high end.
So why's he showing 743MB?
Something ain't right there. -
I'm expecting maybe an $12 comic day today. Normally I'm in the $25-35 range.
Not touching the DCU relaunch at all. After what are essentially 7 event/reboots in the last 6 years, I'm burnt out. I don't give a **** about their lines anymore. Several of them, most distressingly the Superman ones, have gone NOPLACE in the last year and a half (if not longer). And the ones that WERE progressing have been cancelled.
They've provided me with the clean break I need to ditch a monthly comics bill.
I'm sick of "mega events".
I'm sick of reboots.
I just want a comics line that's going to tell me a damned decent story and flip the bird to the larger continuity. But that's not happening now. The whole "universe" continuity thing is the way these hacks want to narrate now.
So fine. They can do it without a cash infusion from me. -
Quote:A lot of this actually depends on your underlying system. What is a good and not too expensive graphics card that runs City well, and without lag during a mothership raid?
If you're running an i7 2600K with 16GB of RAM, you'd get one answer.
If you're running an early Core2Duo with 2GB of RAM, you'd get another.
If you're running a P4 2.8Ghz with 1GB of RAM, we'd tell you to upgrade your base system first.
Hit the "HELP ME!" link in my sig and run CoH Helper as directed there. Paste it back in here.
If your system's a pre-built from a major manufacturer, give us the manufacturer and the model number.
Additionally what kind of budget are you running on (real dollar amounts please). This also helps would-be assistants in homing in on the best bang for the buck for you. -
