Quote:He's already looking to get an SSD for the system anyhow. So there's no point. Just get a 120GB drive for the system disk and call it done. With that budget I wouldn't hesitate getting a 60-64GB SSD to use as a hard drive cache with Intel's Smart Response Technology on a Z68 motherboard.
Honestly, with all the other hardware he's cramming in, he's already at budget.Quote:Unless you have money to burn, I can't see going past a GTX 570. The GTX 580 is only 15-20% faster than a GTX 570 but for 40-50% more money. Doesn't seem like a good deal to me. -
Quote:Tex,
I did this and it's still pulling the same stunt. I don't believe it's the game files that are the problem. As it is the launcher that locks up. When this happens the control interface for the launcher is empty in the middle. As in the application underneath of it is still visible. The border of the launcher is visible and the X to close it is as well. Though the X control is non-responsive. The only way to solve it is to go into task manager and kill the nclauncher.exe process and then start COH again.
Do you have the NCLauncher set to start with Windows?
If you do, turn it off.
Lately in Windows, there've been a rash of dependency issues where certain apps/services will try to start up but their dependency services aren't up yet and then lock while something is "screaming" for it.
Start the launcher up MANUALLY instead. -
Quote:*Forks over one advertising Inf.*For those wondering where the various settings in the NCSoft Launcher are, I'll post this here with a link to Hyperstrike's Guide: How to make the new NCSoft Launcher as unobtrusive as possible that is stickied in this forum section.
Many thanks to Hyerstrike and all of those that posted new information in that thread.

Quote:Depends on how dedicated one is.The Gladiators are dead expensive no? Can't be easy to get surely?
Want to run Alignment missions regularly, run the SSA, and generate some capital on the market to convert RMs to AMs? You can do it in a month or two.
It can be viewed as more of a "long term" goal too.
3 a week from Tips/Alignment
1 a week from SSA
You should be able to generate at least one a week (on a high level character) via TFs and inf.
So about 6 weeks. -
Quote:Congrats.First off, let me say a hearty thank-you to Hyperstrike, for your informed and timely answer.
Based on your input and my own research, I have just now completed a PayPal transaction with Newegg, that will net me the aforementioned GeForce GTX 560!
Is that the 560? Or the 560 Ti?
Either of them are a step up. But the Ti is the more powerful option.
Uh. No. I wish it worked that way. Still, I don't foresee any major issues.Quote:The fact that it's made by Asus will only serve to make it more compatible with the MB.
Okay so you didn't go Ti. Still, you'll going to see a nice "leg up" here.Quote:The 'huge boost in performance and ability to crank video quality' are what sold me on the 'vanilla' base model. The Ti was a lil rich fo my blood (and pocket) at this juncture.
Well, if you leave an area fast enough, you're creating a vacuum. Hence, "suck".Quote:Guess it might be a regional thing, but I've always heard that colloquialism as 'blow the doors off.' Nevertheless, whether it's blowing or sucking... Here's hoping that when it gets here, the perverbial doors of my old rig will be completely sexed off.
Oh. One last thing. 32-bit or 64-bit Windows? (Please say "64-bit") -
Quote:He's talking about the i7 because my initial response involved swapping up to the 2600K. However, when the final bill came back I found I'd forgotten the TV card. The i5-2500K is probably the best bang for your buck, processor wise. It's in Father Xmas' rig that Hyperstrike recommended. The K is important, it's got an unlocked multiplier, the other Intel processors of this generation can't really be overclocked. The i7 isn't really necessary unless you want hyperthreading and many programs won't ever make use of HT. Put the 2500K on a P67 or Z68 motherboard (see Father XMas' recommendation) and push it.
Jer
BUT, if he doesn't mind bumping from $2300 to $2400, I'd say "Go For It!". -
Quote:Okay, right now AMD's processors only have one thing going for them. They're cheap.Yeah, I should have mentioned that I've had an affinity for AMD processors and nVidia GPUs for like, almost ten years now! (Which became amusing once AMD gobbled up ATI.)
It might be a bit of a blind obsession.
Before that, I was loyal to 3DFX...
Before that, I was an Amiga user.
You see where this is going...
Intel's i5 and i7 series are just wiping the floor with them. And the new Bulldozer CPUs, while they're GREAT for massively multithreaded apps, those are primarily found in SERVER environments. None of the games you play are going to take advantage of it. Meaning that Bulldozer in its current incarnation is a dead end.
Stick with Intel this round.
nVidia's a slightly better bet this go-round. While many of the problems people were having with stability cleared up with the 11.9 drivers for AMD, the fact is, there are fewer problems with the nVidia drivers (but NOT "none"). -
Quote:Three words describe the status page.On days like today, when a long server update has been scheduled, I like to keep track of when the servers come up. Unfortunately the page in question here, shows that the servers are all up, when I know they are not. And even thought it is supposed to update without refreshing the page, it doesn't change without refresh (at least in Google Chrome). Also, the Rss feed isn't recognized as an Rss feed on any feed program I use.
I don't hope that it will be fixed soon, but I did want someone to be aware of the problem.
LIES! ALL LIES! -
Quote:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814134121I picked up an eMachines EL1352-07E not realizing quite how small the case was, it does not hold full-size cards. I need a low-form-factor (ie, short) graphics card (including low-form attachment tab) for use with City of Heroes, Photoshop graphics assembly/touchup, and eventually Diablo 3.
What do you recommend, techies? I'd prefer to stay under $100, and I will not go over $200. -
The killer NIC is essentially a waste of money.
Honestly.
As a a hardware fiend of slightly less than Great Old One standing, yeah, it's an interesting add-on that'd be Nice To Play With.
But from a gaming standpoint, the bang for the buck is on par with spending a similar amount for a single snap-cap.
Start with Father XMas $1350 rig. (Actually like $1280 now.)
Strip out the case and DVD burner
Add your case, the InfiniTV card (which is also available from Newegg) and a Blu-Ray player/DVD burner. This brings you up to about $1725 shipped.
You can buy the AuzenTech card directly from AuzenTech with the I/O drive for $315.
If you don't give a damn about the I/O drive, it'll cost you $250.
Add an SSD for $180-250 and you're done.
You're looking at about $2300 all said and done. Without the Killer NIC.
I don't recommend dropping the mechanical hard drive from the hardware list unless you have one of similar size that you're going to move over from your old system.
You still want something to store large files to. OTHER than your space-limited SSD. -
Quote:You'd be NERVOUS? I'd be crapping my spandex and wishing they sold extra rows of inspies in the Paragon Store!I would be nervous about that build of Hyper's because of the end consumption.
Agreed.Quote:As to where you are comfortable, 32.5% is all well and good as you suggest (I like it for my Blasters with their ranged or S/L defense), it's not strictly needed for Fiery Aura. You already have pretty high resists, especially if you have Tough, so what does hit is going to be resisted pretty well. The defenses on my main build do make a significant difference, and adding Barrier or one defense inspiration makes it way tougher than anything you face. Unless it's one of those cheating things the developers do with "unresistable damage."
25% is usually enough to significantly cut down incoming damage.Quote:For defenses, I would say S/L or melee, and Psi are the most important things to defend against well. They're the majority of the damage you face or will do a real number on you if you are hit, so you want to dodge those. And getting to the 20s or a little higher with those will make a noticeable difference. -
Quote:another way is to run the newspaper missions and safeguard mission. When you return to the detective after the safeguard mission, he will introduce you to a contact if one is "in the queue". I've had Tina introduced this way in the past.
Should be easy to speed complete newpaper missions as long as you stay away from the rescue/escorts. FF plus a few purple insps should let you click glowies without interruption.
That's just what Celestial Lord did and he didn't get Tina. -
Quote:Was comparing end red on the original build with a erad set in it and 15% endred. For FootStomp, that's ruinous. And that's multiplied as recharge bonuses add up.If the OP wants it, it's easy enough to get higher end reduction in Foot Stomp; replace the Multi Strike and the Erad Damage with a Scirocco's Dervish Dam/End and an Acc/Dam/End which gives over 60% end reduction and a regen bonus to boot, at the cost of the Erad HP bonus. That's certainly a reasonable option.
However, I don't think it's worth losing the E/NE soft-cap to go from 60% end reduction to 80%, and IMO it's *certainly* not worth spending 2+billion on a PvP IO that you don't otherwise need.
Also, all that additional ToHit strikes me as overkill on a SS tank with Rage, and I think the slots in the Gaussian's set could be put to better use. However, if the OP wants additional ToHit, slotting the Kismet +Acc is a good option.
As for the to-hit being overkill. I'm a subscriber of the "There's no kill" school of thinking. A missed strike is wasted endurance and damage not delivered.
Typing on my phone right now. Will go into more detail when I get in front of a computer.
Back at my computer now. Have added the stuff in color.
Also, he didn't "lose" the E/N soft-cap. He never had it (my build actually is 42.9% to his 42%).
Additionally, my build doesn't have a PVP IO in it.
I merely said that the PVP IO would kick him up over cap on E/N without any major mods to his build
He could convert two of the Reactive sets to three-slotted Aegis in his passives and bump his F/C defense to cap as well.
Then convert one of the Kinetic Combat attacks to a six-slotted Mako.

At that point, it's about as tough as you can get such a tank without compromises (like giving up recharge to boost S/L towards the Incarnates cap). -

Up until now, this set-up has run CoX fairly well, even with ultra mode on low settings. But now, one or the other of the two video cards is failing. It freezes solid intermittently and has also started to blink. I am seriously considering upgrading to an Asus 1gb, 256bit, GDDR5 GeForce GTX 560.
What I'm hoping to learn here, is whether or not this single card can replace the two currently there, without my performance taking a hit.
If you're getting the base model 560, that would be a "yeah". You'll see a huge boost in performance and ability to crank video quality.
If you're getting the un-neutered 560 Ti, that'd be an "Oh HELLZ YEAH!"
Essentially you're going from a high end setup that's 4 generations old to a high-midrange or high performance card of current generation. The colloquial term we use is "suck the doors off" the old setup. -
Okay, on a couple of my 40's, I've been able to just walk up to her and click on her and pick her up as a contact without being introduced by anyone.
You might try that. -
Quote:Hey,
So, I've leveled a SS/WP brute to 23, deleted and rerolled SS/Elec. Now, I'm going over Mids in an effort to find a secondary that provides all the joys I'm looking for.
What I'm looking for:
Solid Defense
Respectable Resistance (as backup)
a self-heal
an PBAoE Aura, preferrably one that does damage, but happy with a buff or debuff.
I've looked over the assorted builds, and I'm stuck between Willpower (drat! for deleting), Electric, Energy.
If advice states to go otherwise, I have no problem with that. My reroll is only 12 at the moment.
Thanks in advance!

Quote:If you can build for better endurance efficiency, go for Spiritual. I find that the Radial T4 is a slightly better value than the Core since it also gives a +Heal/Health boost.Wow, lots of mistakes that I overlooked. Thanks. I was making this while watching Netflix so I must have been pretty distracted. Hurl would be the best to drop of the ranged attacks. I got Body Mastery to go with an Olympian Guard type twist to my character. So mostly for LBE. I didn't get Physical Perfection because I felt that it wouldn't be needed in the build. As I get closer to 50 and actually implementing this build I may feel differently. Thanks again for the help

Oh, on a side note, what are your thoughts for incarnate powers? I can't really decide on an Alpha but for the others I was thinking Reactive, Barrier, Ionic, and IDF.
One thing, Foot Stomp is REALLY badly slotted for EndReduction. Every time you hit it you're going to watch your end bar sink precipitously. It's actually one of the powers I'd recommend ignoring set bonuses for and frankenslotting the crap out of. This is your AoE bread and butter baby!
Take a look at this-un and compare it to your original:
Capped Plus S/L (at Incarnates-level softcap with 7 foes in range).
Roughly equivalent E/N (.9% higher). You'd need a PVP teleport IO to get you to cap.
Higher F/C damage.
Resting endurance consumption goes up only .06/sec.
Better endurance management across attacks (of the attacks left, you shave off nearly 13%)
Slightly higher recovery.
Slightly higher regen.
MUCH higher +ToHit
Slightly higher global recharge.

Quote:Im Curious what a build would look like maxing out def for all types. What are the highest numbers you can get? Fooling around with mids I'm only getting mid to high 29's. Can anybody get any better? 32.5 is the lowest I feel comfortable running so I can pop a luck to soft cap.
Here's me fooling around, I went positional and got into the 40's for melee and AoE. 30's for Ranged.
Endurance consumption is horrific though and I neglected Consume.

Sorry about tonight guys.
Showed up for a grand total of like 10 minutes and was so sick I spent the next couple hours worshiping at the porcelain altar. -
Quote:I actually tend to put the two passives (Elements and Energy) off until late 20's early 30's. For most of the game, you don't start seeing this damage type significantly until then.Hmmm, that does seem pretty sound, but it's kind of running counter to alot of what I've heard about Invul when I was reading up on it the past few days. General concensus seems to be that Resist Elements is totally skippable, especially if going for the defense softcap, and that the passives should mostly be put off and worked in around the 20's range. Not saying you're wrong, it's just different than what I've heard on the street.
The biggest problem that I have with the proposed build is that I'd only have 3 attacks pre-level 20 and if I'm exemping to do low-level stuff I'm going to be woefully useless solo. On a team, not so much, but on my own it would take forever to kill everything.
As far as taking Jab and Haymaker as opposed to Punch and Haymaker is there any particular reason? I know bruising lends a little weight to Jab, but does that really stack up towards endgame? I'd think that having a more powerful move like Punch would come in handier then. Sorry if I'm asking a ton of questions, I just wanna make sure I don't end up being "That Tank" in game, haha.
However, a run around First Ward may change that.
As to being skippable for soft-cap. Depends on if you're just going for S/L softcap or going for the trifecta of paired-types.
Okay, one other thing. You HAVE TO TAKE JAB. You have to. It's the tier 1 attack and is auto-selected. As such, you can take Jab, Punch, Haymaker, or Jab and Haymaker. But you can't take Punch, Haymaker.
At low levels, I tend to fill with vet attacks. Sands of Mu, Nemesis Staff, Blackwand by choice. Open with Blackwand, Nemesis Staff, then run in and start pounding.
If you're going to be spending a lot of time exemping, look at doing a second build focusing on lower level stuff. Ignoring slotting for post-30 attacks and taking Jab, Punch, Haymaker.
One other thing to remember, if you're exemping on a team, your job is to be an aggro magnet. Your teammates are there to pump out the damage. -
Oh boy! Let's see what else Johns can mangle into incoherency!
