Honestly, was it "inept" to increase investment in the game? To green light a second project? To keep a game going that was never, at any point in its life, more than a niche product?

Agreed. Give NC their due here. A HUGE chunk of the things we take for granted nowadays in the game was developed ENTIRELY on their watch.

And they didn't HAVE to. They could have puttered along on the "Freem 16" and left the game in, essentially, maintenance mode.

    They didn't.

I know you're ticked at them for this final decision.

    Hell. So am I!

But even a few moments of honest reflection shows that they did nothing but good for the game until the end.

  3. Waiting till my nephew and two nieces are a little older (they're 9 months right now) before I pull this one on my brother and his wife.

Things are going to be noisy enough around there. I want to make sure they get used to sleeping regularly again before I subject them to "early morning patter".
  4. Happy "Look what just rolled off the assembly line!" Day!
  5. If the negotiations with NCSoft fall through, I don't know if I'll be involved with any more MMOs after this. The thing I'll miss is the community. The game itself is great, don't get me wrong. But the community was the absolute BEST feature of the game.

Starting all that over from scratch, on top of starting over in a new game, would likely be a VERY steep barrier-to-entry for me.

Not that I couldn't. But there'd have to be some very sweet incentives.

Gameplay and game investment would have to have a similar sensibility to CoH.
Non-gear related customization out the wazoo.
I'd probably want to see involvement of former Paragon staff AND CoH community members.
I'd also like to see nods towards the role the community plays in the entire development process. Not necessarily final say on things in the game. But at least a legitimate avenue for input on the game's growth.

Punkbuster is an anti-cheating mechanism some games use to prevent client-side cheat-mods.

Man! Sounds like you need to look for a new ISP! That's a horse**** excuse.

    refund = doom

Basically this is something NCSoft would pretty much have to do. Regardless of whether the game was saved or not.

If CoH is licensed off or spun off or whatever, they'd still have to refund us.

Bank the money for now and, if/when it comes time that CoH rises under another banner, give them the money.

Remember, even if CoH was declared "saved" today, we'd probably be looking at some downtime in December anyhow. There's a LOT of systems in CoH that are tied to the NCSoft billing system. It's going to take some time and a bunch of programmers to decouple that.

Don't give up the ship yet. It's not sinking. It's simply releasing ballast.
  11. Understood.

I wish they'd shout every little change in the situation out. But that's not normally the way businesses conduct themselves.

    1)
Actually yeah. While the percentages on open-air overclocks are smaller, they can still help one realize a significant bump in system performance.

Modern overclocking of these chips are astonishingly easy. And look at it not as a performance booster, but as a lifetime extender for the setup. If you're not into overclocking right now, don't. Then, a few years down the road, if you're not QUITE ready to shell out for a new system, do a small overclock to squeeze a little more performance out of the chip.

Also, the cost differential is minimal and you're nowhere near the upper limit of your budget. So why remove an option?

    2)
In-game, for most of the games you're playing the performance difference between the i5 and the i7 is approximately zero. However, for some apps outside of gaming, you'll realize performance gains.

And, again, you're not even close to the lower end of your budget plans. So why deny yourself a better, more rounded system?
  13. Unfortunately there IS no legal staff at Paragon Studios. They have one or two techs to make sure the servers don't crash and burn before the end of November and a couple community support people to make sure the forums don't dissolve into anarchy (and put out information as NCSoft releases it). That's pretty much it.

Now, on the bright side, negotiations are ALREADY going on.

Brian Clayton, GM of Paragon Studios is apparently in talks with NCSoft to see if the game can be rescued. As soon as there's news, we'll know something. Then we can start asking how we can support the game and its developers in a monetary fashion.

Now, even if it can be saved, there's still going to be a service interruption in December. There's a LOT of parts to the game that are tied into NCSoft's billing system, and it'll probably take time to rework them into another billing system or simply turn them into normal content in the game.

Yes. You can buy a Blu-Ray drive for your computer. However, you'll need to purchase software to allow you to actually view the content.

It might be that you have on-motherboard video. If it's active, it's consuming a small amount of resources. You could go into the BIOS and disable it.

Yeah, this is an integrated video adapter. Hit your BIOS and you should be able to disable it.

Sorry, but I simply don't trust "game boosters". If you're buying/building a modern system, you shouldn't have to worry. Any of them should absolutely scream.

It's not that I think I can do better than a computer running at its best.

It's an issue of control for me. And I quite simply don't trust it "enough" to cede that level of control. Even with the very real possibility of several orders of magnitude increase in overall driver safety.

Computerized ABS, engine control, parking, etc? I can handle that. Actual driver control of the car on a roadway someplace? No.

Computers are capable of amazing things, I love 'em (most of the time) and wouldn't have a job right now without them. But they're not intelligent (not that everyone behind the wheel is either), and are subject to Garbage-In-Garbage-Out.

Maybe this makes me an anachronism. But hey, I can live with it.
  16. The game isn't dead yet.

There are ongoing negotiations to see if the game can be saved and continued under a new studio aegis. There are still 10 weeks to go before the shutdown.

So continue fighting The Good Fight.

    No.

    Not "humans".

    "You".

In the event of an accident, which would you RATHER be in charge of a 1-2 ton chunk of steel, aluminum and plastic? A computer or you?

  21. First off, sorry about the lag, the thread had dropped off my "last two days" search.

And you're one of those lucky b...people around Kansas City, KS eh?
Did I mention I hate your guts?

Okay, I'd recommend the following for a base system reference:

    http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Gamer_Infinity_XLC/

    Tweaked ABOUT like this:

    http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/saved/1EGE1W

    Basically:
    • i7-3770K
    • 16GB RAM
    • 240GB SSD (Yes, for the kind of budget you're playing with, you CAN justify getting an SSD.)
    • 2GB Data Drive
    • GTX 670
    • DVD burner/Blu-Ray dual optical drives
    • Silenced fan setup
    • Sound-abatement in fan and PSU mounts as well as sound-deadening material on top and side panels.
    • No OS
    $1695 before shipping.
Shipping to you will be about $75.

So if your budget is $2K-2.5K, you've still got a buttload of money left over. If you're determined to spend the entire amount, you could go nuts with the thing.

Motherboard is GB NIC. Bumped it from the Crossfire-only base model to one that can do SLI.

If you ever plan on adding more than the 16GB of memory to this thing, think seriously about just investing in a copy of Win7 Ultimate when you purchase the rig.

Okay that's weird. When I was doing the pricing, the variance between the 2500K and the 3570K was a lot more than that for some reason...

16GB is nice and all but CAS 10? Really now? Yes it's not that much more expensive than 8GB CAS 8 memory at that speed but CAS 10 seriously impacts latency and streaming bandwidth. Plus is anyone actually exceeding 8GB while playing a game and not multiboxing?
On Intel, it just isn't as important. And yes, I did look at lower latency stuff. Wasn't enough to justify the price increase.

Plextor is the Cadillac of optical drives. Great drives. But you can get an OEM Asus for $20 (sans Lightscribe) and an OEM Sony for $18. Yes the Plextor is a retail box kit but that's a bit of a premium for screws, a SATA cable and a CD with software you could download from their website. Oh, and a nice box.
Plextors are also very VERY quiet drives in my experience. The Asus and LiteOn drives can be rather...loud. And while the Sony drives can be decent, they're also quite fragile.

I have no problems with the rest of your choices. I know you are Mr SSD but I would have loved to see a conventional very large hard drive as well for bulk storage.
I was squirming a bit with that too. Then I caught the part about him keeping the second machine around as a basic browsing station.

Setting up a network shared drive costs nothing.

  24. YeahNO.

It's a trust factor. And I don't trust software like this to NOT have flaws.

Hence, at some point, manual intervention. Hence, drivers licenses.

And you think the states are going to just give up license revenue?

    Pffft!
