  1. There's also the fact that at least some of us have more or less liquidated our fortunes.

But such attitudes are likely killing your ability to find fun in any other MMO because of it, and that is a real shame.
It's not our fault Cryptic laid such a good foundation and then Paragon raised the bar so damn high that everything else comes across as a crappy knock-off.

I have about as much interest in Fantasy RPG MMOs as the government does in truly solving issues of "corruption". Maybe slightly less (if such a thing is possible). I still have friends trying to get me to come to WoW, talking about their level 80-something toons. Were I to overcome my dislike of FRPGMMO enough to just install it, I'd probably still not sub. That'd pretty much limit me to level 20. So playing with friend in World of Gearquest is pretty much out.

I'm NOT interested in PVP or "fighting" games (think Mortal Kombat platformers).

I'm NOT interested in playing on a console. And I'm not fond of compromises made to make a game console-friendly.

That basically means no DC. And is a big black eye for CO.

    So CO?

    • The art style and general aesthetic, is not only off-putting for me, it is actually nausea inducing.
    • I'm not a fan of the blocking mechanic.
    • The "break free" for status effects is attractive however.
    • I'm a big non-fan of the Champions "universe". It's superhero pastiche with WAY too many expies and way too much tongue planted so firmly in cheek that it's fused with the aforementioned cheek.
    • The online store is so ridiculously overpriced for so many things that I couldn't see myself using it much.
    • Costume creation is a fricking mess. They took a straightforward masterpiece of the CoH costume editor and promptly screwed it up by turning it into a nasty, over-complicated mess of poorly explained controls, pointless alternate choices (like the cloth/metal/leather textures that, for most pieces, are virtually indistinguishable from one another), etc.
    • Teaming in CO is, in politest possible terms, *********.
I'll probably maintain a free character in CO just to talk with friends there playing it. But I won't be subbing. It's simply unplayable for me.
  3. I'd build myself a nice little chalet up on that island Wade-laruu popped into orbit.

With a base portal for easy access.

I'd like to. Unfortunately CoH was pretty much the only property existing in the confluence of my interests. CO is close. But the dopey Champions universe background kills immersion and the art style for the game is literally nausea-inducing for me.

I'm not looking for a fantasy gear and grind.

    I'm not looking for a sci-fi thriller.

I'm looking for a superhero MMO with a good character customization that's alt and casual friendly.

There quite literally isn't anything else out there I actually want to play.

I dipped into MechWarrior Online, because I AM a BattleTech guy. While the mech combat is awesome, it's not enough to sustain my interest. But it doesn't meet my "no gear quest" requirement.

MechWarrior Tactics is interesting, but it's a non-realtime tactical game. So there's no provisions for casual, solo play.

    So, basically, I'm screwed.

Maybe I shouldn't be so "picky". But it's only partially my fault. Paragon has set up a nearly impossible act to follow.

Wonderful as always to see all my fellow tank enthusiasts out there. #97, and our final TT, will be next month. Can't wait!
When I ran my demorecord by the wall, there were 52 people (I extracted the character files).

We had some late-shows of at least 5 more (that I know of).

I wound up running another missions team instead of doing Mender Laz, as we had some lowbies left over.

All in all, lots of fun had all around!

Sorry. But I'm not going to invest in another one of their MMO properties.

They've already shown they'll take a property that's in the black and flush it.

It's also highlighted exactly how bad of an idea it is to spend real money in their online stores. Yeah, the stuff will go away "some day". Everyone knows this. The abrupt cancellation of a property that was doing okay (maybe not "WoW" okay, but okay) simply shines a few zillion candle-power flood lamp on this. This makes me ill-disposed to give them any of my money.

They've fallen into a cycle of "Triple A MMO Churn and Burn". That's basically playing russian roulette, as they've had a couple of their Triple A titles crash and burn spectacularly.

On top of that I have exactly ZERO interest in a fantasy grindfest.

Also, due to the entire ridiculous treatment they've given the whole thing, I'll be actively discouraging any and everyone I meet from investing in NCSoft (and NCSoft-backed) games in the near future.

For an antisocial guy, I know a LOT of people. So my reach goes a LOT further than just the confines my pocketbook.

  9. Okay. I've been trying to stay positive on this. I've been trying to stay civil on this. I've been trying to give the guys at NCSoft the benefit of the doubt.

But there's only so much horse manure I can take. And, truth be told, I passed it a while back and have been holding onto the edges of my civility with mildly tacky fingertips.

Well. I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!

I really REALLY wish I knew what the hell NCSoft's problem was. It's like dealing with a schizophrenic off their meds.

"Exhasted all options". BULL! If they'd exhausted all options, the game would be SOLD!

This means that they're asking for a completely unrealistic price or conditions of sale.

Or it means that, for whatever reason, they simply want to bury the title and have NOT been engaging in negotiations for the property in good faith. They've just been stringing both potential buyers, and the community along, trying to keep us quiet.

The first is stupidity, plain and simple. The fact that they won't even discuss the asking price even points at the second.

The second is just shady business. On par with the forged Garriott letter.

In both cases, it may have actually accomplished what they want, had they not been so ham-handedly clumsy about their public presence.

And, if this stands, they've essentially announced to the world that they've adopted a "churn and burn" model. But they're doing it with supposedly Triple-A titles!
    • Use one title's revenues to finance the next
    • Spend as little money on the title as possible post-launch
    • Once they've milked the title for all they think its worth, they close up shop and move on to the next thing.
This is a VERY dangerous business move. Since one or two not-very-successful products can basically crater them. I mean, look at AutoAssault and Tabula Rasa. In a full-on churn and burn, that would have basically destroyed the company right there.

And worse, it absolutely DESTROYS customer retention. In a print medium, a game from a churn and burn is still playable, weeks, months, years, DECADES after the game ceases to be produced. Not so with an MMO. And players only need this to happen to them a couple times before they simply give up on the medium and look for something else.

Were I ArenaNet or Carbine, I'd be VERY VERY nervous right about now. Once the sales fall off for GW2, that's it.

And worse, NCSoft, in its headlong rush to kill this game dead are pointing out (in thousand-foot high, flashing neon pink letters) exactly how ephemeral cash shop setups are. They're willing to nuke a money-making title, shortly after new paid content is released, on a short timeframe.

This isn't just sucktastic for the people who actually bought into the cash shop, it's also a dangerous flash point that's bad for EVERY game that uses this kind of economic tool.

Yes...everyone understands that you're paying real money for electronic gimcracks. Everyone understands that the stuff will go away sooner or later. This is not only sooner, but pretty nearly "immediately".

Okay, now some people, in a couple places have been suggesting retaliation against NCSoft. Turning Anonymous on them, etc, etc.

First, the Anon guys are just as dangerous to YOU as they are to anyone else. They make all sorts of noises about "social justice", etc, etc. Bull. They're a bunch of criminals with a big crowd of know-nothing cheerleaders.

Second, that THEN allows NCSoft to play the victim in all this. We want to avoid that option like an ebola ward. They're not a victim here. They're an aggressor, and need to be pointed out as such.

As for people talking about how CoH didn't make money. Did you miss the fact that 80 people were laid off? That less than HALF of them were actually working on CoH? Outside of a few shared resources (like managerial and office staff), the rest were on the new project. That's not a studio that's not making money.

So, NCSoft, with their childish antics, have made their position clear.

    Fine.

The gloves are now coming off. Enjoy the ride.

It's an MMO. The client is useless without the server infrastructure. And vice versa.
  11. Also remember this:

    NOW:
    NCSoft: Talks have failed...

    THEN:
NCSoft: Richard Garriott has given us his letter of resignation...
Richard Garriott: Uh? WHAT? No I didn't!

    Look at it thusly.

In the event that Paragon manages to complete a deal with NCSoft for CoH rights, you'll be able to turn around and throw that money at them immediately.

Unfortunately, I don't know that obtaining a backup of the database will be possible.

Meaning you'd have to resort to something like a site crawler to get even a fraction of what's here. Something like that would put MAJOR strain on the server.
