Quote:Yes and no.Much ado about not a whole lot here people.
1) If the Co* database is hacked... you will lose, perhaps a couple of days of playing time. Maybe. The database IS backed up... this is how things CAN BE brought back. It has already happened. So if the ENTIRE database is hacked... you clean up the mess, close the hole, and restore the servers from a couple of days ago... maybe not in that order, but pretty much.
2) If the User accounts are hacked, more games can be purchased, or perhaps items. Either of which can be used for 'gone to the americans!' type horrificness. But again, that's where backups could be important, as well as a good Customer Service to fix that issue. And change your password, yo.
3) If the credit card information database is hacked, this also can be dealt with. Everyone gets a freebie short credit alert plan, as Paragon Studios and NCSoft should make it so, and then it's not terribly hard to get a police statement, send it off, and protect yourself for 7 years. This, in effect is what I did... SOMEONE got my info, and opened a couple of accounts. I caught them doing it pretty quick, and shut it all down in about 1 day.
It's scary, sure, but once you've been robbed at knifepoint, had the house burgled, and had your personal information violated... it's just not a huge deal anymore, to me.
Let 'em get my CC info. It won't work in 1 day, if it works at all for ya. I'm watchin youuuu...
/Of course, this is my 'merican experience, so if you're not 'merican, then your issues with this kind of stuff might differ.
//Really tryin' to not need any credit anything, so I can't care much anymore about my credit score these days...
///Hopefully soon(tm) it'll all be over, and I'll never need Credit again.
////That's a day I'll be gettin' drunk about.
A brute force breakin would be essentially a "one and done".
Something more subtle, and left to lie for a period of time with subtle alterations, could compromise backups.
Still, I'm not horrendously worried. -
Quote:Decent summary. One I was too lazy to go into.First, the company has to pay for the OTP (one-time-password) service. That can be anywhere from $1000 a year to $1000 a month to $1000 a week depending on just how many keys you need. Then, you can have each key fob custom designed to fit the CoX theme (anywhere from $20 to $30 to $40 per key fob depending on manufacturer and design used) or you could go blank for about $18 a key fob. Then you have to repackage the game with the fobs. This requires new packaging to indicate the new security (mostly in the System Requirements). Then you have to recall all previous versions. THEN you have to ship and stock the new boxed versions. THEN you have to ship new fobs to each player subscribed to your game.
Please note that I didn't include the time, money and manpower it would take to integrate the new security measures into the game's databases and interface (this includes login/store screens, the NCsoft website (another deal to be made since NC owns Paragon), and server-client authentication handshaking). I also didn't include the myriad of customer support issues the current service reps would have to be trained on.
The cost can add up very, very rapidly. Unless you understand the processes and stages involved in making such a 'minor' addition to the game, and unless you've had first hand experience modifying a large-scale MMO, you can't ask for something like this and treat it like a minute issue.
Kudos! -
Quote:Tell me. Do you understand the word "subsidized"?It can't be that much of a money pit. I currently subscribe to four MMOGs, including this one. Three of them offer authenticators. Two of them offer physical dongle authenticators. CoH is the only one that doesn't offer any kind of authenticator.
Physical authenticators aren't expensive... the most I've had to pay for one was $12, and that included shipping.
As for it being one of the four MMOs that you sub to that doesn't offer *Insert Here*. How do you want me to answer this?
And the fact that they need more customer support intervention when the authenticator fails? -
-
It's called "Unauthorized access".
You have a right to access those systems via approve channels (the game client). You do NOT have the right to access those systems via non-approved channels (grabbing root on a console, grabbing a remote desktop, accessing the raw filesystem, etc).
People can get real jail time for this sort of thing.
And if they can prove malicious intent, the sentence just goes up. -
Hey guys.
Just an FYI. The Freedom Fire/Rads event every Monday will be on hiatus until 01/09/2012.
This year I have a bunch of family in-town for the holidays and my brother just presented me with a nephew and two nieces. So I'm going to be spending a bit of time away from the game during the holiday season.
We'll pick up again at 9PM Eastern on the 9th though. So hope to see you guys then! -

Quote:Thank you for reporting that you play Rift. Another piece of crucial data in my social engineering database...Well, I just discovered this morning that another MMOG I play was hacked and had its customer database stolen. That's the second time this year that a MMOG I play was hacked and had its customer database stolen. I still have a few complimentary months remaining on a credit report service from the first time!
It's always a matter of time. Security is NOT about "keeping people out". It's about being enough of a hassle to get past that would-be hax0rz move on to greener pastures and easier cracks.Quote:While this hasn't happened to City of Heroes... yet... with the way things are going, it's only a matter of time.
Because it's an enormous money pit for something like an MMO. It gives you a false sense of security. And it's an enormous hassle. The physical fobs don't keep 100% perfect sync with the server. So when they fall out of sync, you can't sign on. This leads to massive customer service overhead. I've worked for companies with only a couple hundred of the things out there and it's a pain. Think about doing it for 10-100,000 people.Quote:Why is there still no authenticator? Whether it be mobile or physical, (preferably physical?) While this wouldn't prevent a hacker from obtaining my information, it would at least prevent someone else from logging onto my account with the stolen information and would give a little peace of mind.
Quite simply, you couldn't pay me enough.
Not to mention that such devices are NOT inexpensive.
Dongles are not the way.
Also, if you're thinking about hard-coded dongles, fuhgeddaboudit. If it's a static value, it can be read, copied, and replayed. Leaving you no more secure than you were before.
You essentially have several things protecting your account right now.
Your NCSoft Master Account and the two-factor authentication there (see, you already have it).
Your game account which, ideally, shouldn't be the same as your master account name. Moreover, it should have a different password than your master account as well.
Actually, yes. It's still security. Remember, the vast majority of hacks don't happen on hard targets where the user has no information. The things required to do stuff like that are spectacularly obvious and trigger massive alarms to tell your network operations that "something REALLY bad is happening".
While obscurity is not GREAT security, it's simply one of myriad tools used to provide security. -
Quote:You're forgetting the wear leveling algorithms built into the controller, so you avoid massive amounts of write cycles to the same cells every time. Significantly prolonging the usable lifetime of the media.Careful with that one. SLC (single level cell, or 1 bit per cell) SSD's have endurances in the hundreds of thousands to a million write cycles.
Pretty much all consumer-grade SSD's these days are using MLC (multi level cell, 2 bits per cell) technology. MLC has a much shorter lifetime, in some cases as low as a thousand write cycles (but usually estimated at up to ten thousand cycles). This is still better than a hard drive, unless you're running an enterprise database or streaming storage.
Manufacturers have started playing with 3 bits per cell (TLC). The best estimates I've seen for TLC is a thousand write cycles and it could well be lower than that. TLC scares me at the moment, I personally wouldn't use a TLC drive.
(The reason why the drive companies are stufffing more bits per cell is because it allows them to offer larger drives for lowed prices.)
Most of the MLCs are tens of thousands of write cycles per cell. Aggregated across tends or hundreds of gigabytes and you're talking years of use from a drive. -

Sorry I missed it.
Was out meeting my new nieces and nephew.
They were subjecting their poor uncle to formula farts...
Someone's going to have to educate them about the Geneva convention and why bio-weapons violate them...

Bah. Not going to wish someone "Happy Holidays".
Going to do it right.
MERRY CHRISTMAS! -
Quote:Dude. You are ALL sorts of AWESOME!YAY!
MORE YAY!
I am deliriously happy that this has been recieved, and on time no less!
It was an absolute delight to make this for Sister Flame and she is welcome to play with it as much as she wants; all the paintwork is well and truly protected.
I've even moved the character in the letter onto Freedom so I can indeed team with the myth, the legend that is Sister Flame. We'll work out times!
Nothing makes me smile more than giving presents and especially to kids. And even more especially to kids who play City of Heroes.
As The Doctor would say: This is Christmas!

Quote:Sorry, but his original post is simply a lousy "LRN2PLAY". Nothing more.So you are arguing that there are elitists, who expect people to pay attention to their screen and actually move their characters from time to time, and non-elitists. I assume that non-elitists drool on their keyboard and mash buttons while complaining that everyone else on the league needs to get better?
He's presuming HE is a font of wisdom when it comes to playing the game and the people who disagree with him are imbeciles who don't know how.
That's pretty much the textbook for elitism. -
Quote:As opposed to what? The poorly veiled "LRN2PLAY" that is asking me "How much have you done this?"Interesting that of all the other things you could respond to, you chose to respond to that particular comment.
Suffice it to say I have done these trials. I've done them enough to know I don't really want to do them anymore. ANY of them. Maybe once in a blue moon, when I'm drunk and belligerent or something.
Why should I? If I claim to never have done them, it's "Then you don't know what you're talking about.Quote:You make no claim that you have completed the trials numerous times to verify the fact that they are not "hard".
If I have, then it's "You just suck. Learn to play. You don't know what you're talking about."
Why even get into it?
As if I give a damn about your "credit". Some yapping head on a forum, hiding behind anonymity. Whatever drivel you choose to believe about me is your problem. Not mine.Quote:Thank you sir, for discrediting yourself further. -
Quote:If they were "binary" they would by definition consist of only two parts
Apparently *I* am not the one who fails to understand binary.Quote:Originally Posted by HyperstrikeAs has already been said, these trials aren't "hard". They're binary. Bring the prescribed X, Y and Z and you're fine. Don't and you fail. -
Quote:Basically go to Fort Trident in Atlas Park. Can you step me through how to do this conversion? I have a char with a little over 700 regular merits, how do I convert them to hero merits and gran the KCs?
You can convert 50 merits and 20 million a day into 1 Alignment merit. You have enough Reward merits to generate 14 Alignment merits.
The Dam/End and Dam/Rech are available for 1 AM each.
The Triple is available for 2.
The Acc/Dam isn't on the list though and would need to be bought with Reward Merits or on the market.
The Acc/Dam is available for 50 Reward Merits (effectively slightly less than the cost of one AM).
You don't REALLY need to get three sets of it all at once. You have enough to comfortably afford 2. If you're low on available cash you can burn 2 RMs for something like a LOTG +Rech and sell it. That should net you the spare cash.
100 Reward Merits: 2x Acc/Dam
100 RM+40 Mil Inf: 2x Dam/End
100 RM+40 Mil Inf: 2x Dam/Rech
200 RM+80 Mil Inf: 2x Triple
100 RM+40 Mil Inf: LOTG +Rech for sale.
Or you can spend 4 days farming tip missions on low diff to build up 2 AMs for the LOTG to get you started.
Or do a few SSA. WWD 1 is STUPIDLY survivable. Especially for an exemp'ed L50. -
Quote:You should be able to accomodate a GTX 560 Ti quite nicely.Currently running a self-built rig from 5/09, checking for advice.
Case: Antec P182
Power supply: Corsair 750w
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
RAM: 8G G.Skill DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
Video card: EVGA GeForce GTX 260
Sound: onboard
Thinking of upgrading the video card (would prefer something with HDMI-out for movies) but not sure what this rig can still accommodate.
Main use is for COH and SWTOR
Any help is appreciated.
My current rig is a Q8300 with a 560 Ti and it screams!
My recommendation is also to go EVGA. The new release of nVidia products is just around the corner and, if you start feeling envy for next-gen products, the Step-Up program will get you up whatever comes next for a miniscule amount more.
Also, maybe look at an SSD. Won't really add to performance (per-se). But any portions of zone loading that are disk-I/O intensive will SCREAM with a nice SSD. -
Quote:If all the badges for UG, TPN, and MoM were optional rewards for soloing Hamidon without dying I'd work on that, one successful attempt per badge, as many times as it took, until I had them all, even if it took a year of effort.
That's what I think about the "difficulty" of the latter trials personally.
-
Quote:As has already been said, these trials aren't "hard". They're binary. Bring the prescribed X, Y and Z and you're fine. Don't and you fail.I'm really not sure what all the fuss is about. If you're on a team of experienced players who are willing to pay attention and work as a team, the latest trials are no harder than Keyes or UG. But if your idea of fun is standing in one spot and button mashing aoe's until you inevitably win, then you're probably not going to enjoy these new trials.
The mechanics of the TPN and MoM are pretty straightforward, and if you pay attention to your screen you'll even notice a timer for when the pink patches of doom are about to drop. If you can't develop a strategy to deal with that, well, maybe you should yourself find a nice farm, stand in one spot, and aoe until you inevitably win. What a fun and rewarding challenge that must be.
Why don't we just run down a straight hall and beat up everything in the way. Then we win when we get to the end with our holy trinity of Healer, DPS and Tank?
Fit that cookie-cutter baby! -
Quote:That too. But what I'm talking about are all the powers players have that essentially wash out all but the craziest, most obvious displays. Its on purpose. I was saying in the other thread that there appears to be some kind of extra rooting effect being applied. Now the patches magically appear under you randomly, root you, grow and then DOT pulse you to death so even after leaving it you get a full dose or two of death DOT.
There is nothing hard about a failed gimmick mechanic that is broken.
So the answer to being able to see the crap is to...turn our powers off?
I like the idea of being more powerful. Great. Fine and wonderful.
But not at the expense of having all my other abilities become utterly meaningless.
At this point, several trials are now "if you don't bring X, Y, and Z, you fail".
**** that noise.
I already detest endlessly grinding trials. Now I have to endlessly grind them just to eventually build the "right" stuff to complete it successfully? Or be a leech on everyone else? Yeah... -
Quote:Exactly. So your idea of hard and mine aren't the same. Cleverly designed foes like the Captain in the 3rd Who Will Die - where you destroy his buffing and then activate the guns for yourself - are fun.
Pools of death on the ground whether blue, pink or chartreuse not so much.
Moreover, with all the ground-effect powers out there, it's ridiculous. -
