The thing that's fingernails on a chalkboard to me are people who try to enunciate acronyms.

Like the first time someone pronounced ISA (Industry Standard Architecture, an old motherboard connection before PCI, AGP, and PCI-E) as "eye-sah", I gave them a look like "Who the hell lobotomized YOU this morning?"

"Wow mom! I was lazy and saved A WHOLE SYLLABLE!"

Where, EXACTLY in this game do you see photorealistic representations of humans?

    Hmm?

They're all rendered with a certain "comic book" style. Comic book, comic strip, animated comic = cartoon.

English is still a living language however. While I dislike illiterate uses ("ur" and other "lolcatzisms" and the like) as much as the next person "toon" isn't an illiterate use. It's a very natural, organic contraction of a basic (and topical) concept.

Yes and no. On a "toon" you run around, perform (and receive) acts of ludicrous ultraviolence and, at the end, every gets up and goes on their merry way.

So, for some people, seeing their online avatars as "toons" is no great intuitive leap.

    *MEEP MEEP!* /em superspeedawayintothedesert

As to why it isn't prevalent in tabletop playing? Tabletop playing has no similar "visual" component. Yes, you might have a grid or hex map with figurines on it. It's just not the same.

Personally, I'm not heavily invested into the RP aspect of the game (it can, admittedly, be a bit creepy at times). As such, most of my RP is a lot more "meta". Where the avatars have a nice back story, but in-play, are merely extensions (or facets) of my personality (or id, depending on whom you're speaking to about me).

My main, Hyperstrike, is about as meta as it gets. Bordering on "She-Hulk" territory. A couple of my characters are full-on whackjobs (in my typical tongue-firmly-fused-in-cheek manner), which would be difficult to play properly and VERY confusing and off-putting for those playing with me.

As such, I let most of the dramatic pyrotechnics stay where they're best. In my head. And I play in a more down-to-earth manner.

As to how "old school" one is? Use of "toon" won't give you that. It'll simply give you an idea of how predisposed to use the term "toon" they are.
  12. Please don't be offended. But "uh what"?
I'm having trouble understanding exactly what your issue is.
Can you elaborate a bit more?

A tauntless tanker isn't someone thinking "outside the box".

It's someone who dislikes, doesn't understand or just disbelieves in the idea of a tanker as a combat controller. And since tanker damage is less than scrapper damage, they to to augment their attack chains with power choices to turn what could be a first-rate tank into a third-rate scrapper.

Then, when this blows up in their face, their teammates, who're expecting a modicum of aggro control, are the ones who pay the price.

I keep coming back to Dull Pain as being the only Pro for Invuln over WP...but then it's long recharge really hurts that advantage.
DP isn't, by any means, the only advantage.
To gain anything close to the resistance levels Invuln enjoys normally, you essentially need to perma SoW.
Invuln also doesn't place it's "faith" in a heavily resisted debuff and ridiculous levels of suppressible regen.

Is a 50% defense debuff really that much better than 25% if you're softcapped?

The very marginal extra resistance does not seem to mean much either...as WP's perceived weakness (alpha strike) is really a non-issue once you have Footstomp.
The numbers look small. They always do. The fact is that 20-30% delta can mean the difference between survival or death in spike damage.

    Quote:
    Add in:

    Invuln's Psi hole.
Which isn't all that important. Plus the "psi hole" is actually tinier than it appears. Remember that, while one doesn't normally rely on it for Invuln, they also benefit from positional defenses. A defense-heavy Invuln can have AoE and Ranged defense in the high 20% range. What's WP's psi defense? 30-35%.

Admittedly, you do have an edge in psi resistance. But you're talking one of the more exotic damage types in the game until you hit Incarnates.

    WP's Quick Recovery

    I did no such thing.

Look at my illustration again. There are 2 indicators, but only a single column, denoting a single population set.

People who PvP also do PvE and just because 100% of the people in this game PvE (on some level) does not mean that the PvP population is invalid due to its size. [/quote]

I didn't say it was invalid due to it's size. Merely that people need to be realistic about PVP's future and it's place in developer priority. The devs are currently going after changes that are more or less accessible to everyone or further.

    Quote:
The way you are comparing the populations in this game would be as if you compared all humans on who live in Chicago to all humans who live on the planet. The first issue with that comparison is that the two populations overlap, the second issue is that the two comparative descriptors are not even in the same category.
I'm well aware the two populations overlap. You're barking up the wrong tree here and misreading a graph.

hile I do agree with your statement that the sub-group of people who enjoy PvP currently is fairly small, I do think it is a large enough sub-group for the Devs to put some effort and attention in to the wants and needs of this group.
So does the AE crowd. So does the base design crowd. Need I go on?

    Quote:
There have been multiple instances where upgrades/changes/fixes have been a priority for the Developers for the PvP population.
Denoting a differentiation between "just broken" and "nonfunctional".

If you go back and look at the original- "please fix" thread by @not putzing and look at all the prority items that the PvP population (pre-i13) asked the devs to fix/modify, you will see that out of the top 5 items, I believe 4 have been changed/fixed as we the PvP population requested.

Yes TS/HD/DR/inherent resists- are an issue- only because it creates a steep learning curve for anyone who wants to try pvp, you have to learn a whole new set of rules and mechanics (which is why the OP posted this thread), but I do think that with time perhaps we would see some better features to help change the gap between the two current mechanics in the game. If that is a better UI that allows us to toggle accurate PvP vs PvE information, or something of the like, I do think it will come to pass.
You're welcome to believe what you will. Honestly, my not-so-humble opinion of the situation is that they've sunk enough time and money into the system and are going to be wary about throwing anything else that way. Just about every major change to PVP has lead to yet another exodus of players..
  16. Also, Warden, what exactly is your budget for this rebuild?
    1. Don't kill the pagefile. Windows won't ever really let you turn it COMPLETELY off, but some programs respond strangely when the page file is set to "off" and Windows is managing a stealth pagefile.
    2. From your description it DOES sound like you're overheating. Maybe pull the bad-boy out, clean it out and manually reseat everything. Make sure your CPU cooler hasn't popped off. Grab a copy of CoreTemp too and see what your thermal profile looks like.

    The issue starts around 3:51.

It's like all the light sources in the game crash for him. The last one to go is the sky and it's endlessly trying to reboot itself (the "strobe" effect he mentions).

I'm wondering if he has either a bad driver install or a bad card.

    Nothing's showing on netgraph.

Going to see if I can dupe it on my laptop.

    *Update*

    Okay. Unable to duplicate it.

    A couple suggestions:

    1. If this is a desktop machine, pop it open, clean out the insides and make sure all your power cords are firmly seated. If necessary, unplug it and firmly plug it back on to be sure.
    2. Uninstall the graphics drivers in safe mode. Run a driver sweeper. Then reinstall.
    3. Try having the NCLauncher run a check on your game files just in case.
    4. Try yanking or just turning off MemTurbo. It's possible the program is being overly-aggressive and causing corruption of data in-memory.

To hell with finding an AGP board.

    Find something with PCI-E.
If you can cover shipping, I have a GTX 260 I'll send you.

I'd sent it out to someone else previously, but she couldn't use it because it didn't fit her case. Right now it's just sitting on a shelf taking up space.

    A) Please observe the ENTIRE structure of the Freedom system. It gives free members a significant disadvantage compared to paid members.
There's a difference between "play for free with limits" and "This person paid MORE than you, so THEY "win", not you."

I could (but wont') simply chuck thousands at this game.

Maybe as a single-person I wouldn't affect the internal game market much. But if everyone does it, the auction house effectively dries up. Making it nearly for people trying to progress without spending real money to acquire anything other than common IOs. As recipe drops are utterly random.

Notice a distinct lack of additions for AE? Something that sees more traffic than PVP?
I'd say they're pretty much resigned to the fact that PVP in this game is essentially a dead end. Good, bad or otherwise. That's reality.

    Quote:
i know the devs. arnt completly ignoring the pvp community either, in previous panel conversations with the devs. they did infact say they would work on pvp in the future, when?
As I said earlier. It's "don't hold your breath" and whenever they have absolutely nothing else on their plate.

    Quote:
we dont know and we are getting impatient, so dont try and basicly tell us that no one pvps or that the devs. will never work on this
Please stop attempting to mangle my words into something I didn't say.

I never said nobody PVPs. And I didn't say the devs will NEVER work on it.
Merely that I highly doubt that they're going to turn PVP around and actually realize an increase in PVP players because of it.

    Quote:
we pvpers want to enjoy the game the same as anyone else does, we just dont want to constantly do trials and strike forces over and over again
I don't begrudge you your desires. I'm merely saying that you're unlikely to have them satiated anytime soon.

    Quote:
every game out there nowadays has some sort of pvp system
    Yay! A checkbox!

That's essentially why PVP was spit-and-bailing-wired onto this game. The then-prevailing "wisdom" was "a "major" MMO "has to" have PVP"." Look where it's gotten CoH's PVP.

    Quote:
like call of duty or dcuo, so their are infact ALOT of people who would love to go head to head against another player for the fun of it, but most of those people have went on to other games were their pvp system is fixed and balanced, or at least have devs. who will listen to them and not just pick a curtain faction of people.
I remind you. This game isn't CoD. This game isn't DCUO.

And going head-to-head against another player is only fun if you both have a chance of actually winning, regardless of what AT/power combinations you select. That just isn't the case with CoH. And the attempt to try and break the game to the point that it IS has left PVP all but unrecognizable to PVE players.

And that's only one of CoH's myriad PVP "issues".

Again, I don't begrudge you your enjoyment. But a more realistic outlook of PVP's future will probably leave you less rage-filled when said reality comes crashing in on you eventually.

If it helps, just regard me as a humbug and a crank. Time will tell.

Gauntlet -- also referred to as "PunchVoke" -- causes the Tanker's AoE attacks and auras to taunt every PvE enemy they affect. Their single-target attacks taunt the enemy hit and up to four more around it. Gauntlet has reduced chances of affecting exceptionally high-rank foes like Giant Monsters, and even worse chances of affecting other players in PvP.
Brutes possess a smaller version of this power, occasionally labeled as "PokeVoke" by the community, as it does not possess an official name. The Brute's version of Gauntlet does not apply in PvP, and their single-target attacks only taunt the one target

See above. Slotting a taunt in each extends the taunt duration on every target in radius by about 6 seconds. It's actually a way of holding aggro as opposed to ripping it away from others.

    Quote:
With the two powers providing +tohit buffs on 5 enemies, to hit for every attack is 108%. That's only 5 enemies mind you. Slotting just 1 accuracy IO will raise that to over 150% as accuracy is a multiplier to +tohit. How much do you expect in the way of +tohit debuffs?
Enough that your initial recommendation to remove all Acc enhancements would leave them unable to hit +level enemies.

    Quote:
This build has more then enough healing and end recovery built into it that you could carry accuracy inspirations that will do for those times when accuracy is an issue.
Call it a difference in philosophy. I don't like to rely on inspies. Because you have no control over what drops and when or if it's useful to the situation.

    Quote:
Though honestly, I think with 108% accuracy base...plus any buffs from teammates (such as tactics) ..it would be fine not to slot additional.
Then there's the assumption this toon is teaming and thus can rely on yet another form of undependable buff.

This fight is in way too large a part a battle with the UI. My characters with Aid Other don't even bother using it because of the technical hurdle of finding and selecting the targetted person while still trying to dodge the various stuff going on in this trial.

On the point of the Confusion aura in Underground, it seems to me that if ever there was a mechanic that could use a "dodge the patch" type mechanic, this would be it. Maybe something like the floor patches on the Sutter Task Force. In any case I feel like on a league without the "right" Destinies I shouldn't have to suicide on purpose a few times during the fight just to go back to the hospital for more inspirations, and until this (IMO ridiculous) mechanic is repaired I will not be playing this trial again.

Unlike some other posters I actually enjoy the death patches in general though, especially in MOM (although really only after getting to Level 53). The patch in MOM where everyone has to bunch up to save the life of a character is cool with me, too.
    Something I'd like to see.

Some OTHER mechanism for showing people they have things like Acids and Pacification Grenades on the Lambda than dumping them under "temp".

Or the powers tab/window needs a COMPLETE fricking overhaul.

Here's a mock-up of my current window and the sort of screen height that's needed to display it fully. Go to the full-sized versions and count the number of color transitions. It took 14 copies of a max-sized power window. And I am, by no means, a temp powers freak. There are people out there who probably sport DOUBLE the number of temps I do.

As it is, I have to scroll down 5-6 complete window heights simply to see if I have the temps.
Is it any wonder why trying to do Lambda on a S/L-heavy team can be a frustrating experience?
You have someone yelling at everyone else "Check your trays! Check your trays!" while people are scrolling through their power list madly and trying not to die.

And this is just going to get worse.
