  1. Hey folks,

Hope all is well. I'm having serious rubber banding and lag issues. At 1280 x 1024, I get 85 FPS in COV. However, NPCs and cars rubber band, Market and Paper mission updates lag severely and so on...

Ever since installing to NCsoft's Launcher or around Japan's unimaginable disaster, COX has issues. As for the two events mentioned:

    1. I reinstalled NCsoft Launcher and no fix.
    2. Japan's recent disaster, I live in a neighboring country (literally), but I don't think my internet connection should be affected (not sure though...). I don't see any news regarding correlation of Japan and local internet issues.

I have no clue what the cause is.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Here is link to reference my original opinion. http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=123922

The link will specifically tell you the Unique only benefits you. And it also uses Traps' Triage Beacon (similar to Spirit Tree) as an example where the User is not maximizing the Unique.

    YMMV
  3. Imho, I would not slot it in Spirit Tree. Instead, slot it in your health. Generally, this is advised even more than slotting into "healing" powers such as for Emps and Regen scraps because of how the Unique works.

Unless someone has greater knowledge, that's would I advise.
  4. Thanks for replies.

Sorry need clarification...(Noob here) Err...I may have mis-stated something. I asked:

"1. With one Sata cable can I run both Hard drive and Dvd burner on same line? I know IDE, you should not." **Edited** IDE had power issues on same cable line.

Response from generous folks: "Basically, only one per device."

However, I am left wondering about the SATA power cables running from PSU that have 3 attachments per cable with ends looking like this photo:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SATA_power_cable.jpg

    Not asking about this:

    http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...ed=0CBoQ9QEwAg

So still what everyone is suggesting? Or will a HDD and a DvD on same line be ok (Due to power needs)?

    Thanks in advance.
  5. Hey folks,

Happy Holidays!! And I hope all is well.

I am just about done assembling my new COX rig!! On a side note, wow, I can't believe how much of a time sink assembling first computer can be--especially cable management...

Details you might need to know:

    1. Case--Cooler Master CM 690
    2. PSU--Silverstone strider 750w (80 plus Silver)
    3. Mobo--Asus M4a88td-v evo/usb 3
    4. GPU--One GTX 460 1 gig.

Two questions regarding "cable management" (I honestly could not get "google" to answer):

    1. With one Sata cable can I run both Hard drive and Dvd burner on same line? I know IDE, you should not.

    2. On a molex cable line, can I run three 120 mm fans safely. Or should I run two molex cables total (one with one and second with two?).

Thanks in advance. And I hope everyone has a great holiday!!
  6. Father Xmas,

Thank you very, very much for your help. As always, tremendously insightful.
  7. Hey folks (Edited for stupid mistakes),

Hope all is well. I have finally scrounged all the pieces for a new COX rig. Just wondering if everything looks good. And thank you to anyone who takes the time to read this.

***Note*** I live in a country with no Newegg or such and I have limited choices. So I am forced to pay severe markup for the few quality parts I can find. However, if you suggest something, I can try to "find" it.

I have also listed parts in "short" and "detailed" lists. Some items in "short" list need to be seen in "detailed" list.

    Short List:

    1. Mobo--Asus m4a88td-v evo/usb3
    2. RAM--see dilemma in "detailed" (4gigs Dual Channel)
    3. CPU--Phenom II x4 965 BE (125w) or tad cheaper 955 BE.
    4. CPU Cooler--Cooler Master Hyper 212plus
    5. GPU--Nvidia GTX 1GB (either MSI Cyclone or Axle Ace)
    6. PSU--see two options in "detailed".
    • Toss up-two good choices (750w is cheaper than 650w. Will do mild OC'ing). Father Xmas also mentioned that I would most likely need, in worst case scenario but not likely, 550watts.
    7. HDD--Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ (SATA2/7200RPM/32M)
    8. ODD--Samsung Super-Writemaster sh-s223c
    9. Case--Cooler Master CM690
    10. Windows 7 Home OEM 64 bit

    Detailed List:

    1. Motherboard--Asus m4a88td-v evo/usb3:

    (AMD 880g chipset/Supports 140w CPU@45nm. And 4 x DIMM, Max. 16 GB, DDR3 2000(O.C.)/1333/1066 ECC,Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory, Dual Channel memory architecture/*AMD AM3 100 and 200 series CPU support up to DDR3 1066MHz).
    2. RAM--(This is where I got confused on my own research. Coupled with I have limited purchasing choices). Motherboard says DRR3 2000 (O.C.)/1333/1066 ram type. HOWEVER, Crucial memory website says PC3-10600, PC3-12800.
    • I understand DDR3 ram at 1333 mhz@10600 or 10666 are pretty much the same. But Asus and Crucial don't seem to match each other for 1333mhz or even 1600mhz.
So which speed "really" works with my motherboard: 1333mhz@10600 or 10666 and, even, 1600mhz@12800?

I can choose some ram from G.SKILL's Ripjaws or Eco, Geil, Patriot, OCZ, Corsair. Most of these will be:
    • CL9/CL8 with timings of 999-24/888-24.
    • A lucky few CL7 at 7-8-7-21.
    3. CPU--AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE (125w) or tad cheaper 955 BE.

    4. CPU cooler--Cooler Master Hyper 212plus
    5. GPU--Nvidia GTX 460 1gb either MSI or Axle (much cooler than MSI).
    6. PSU--(750w 80plus Silver) Corsair HX750 single 12v rail 62 Amps. Or a pricier (650w) Seasonic X single 12v rail 54 Amps.
    7. HDD--Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ (SATA2/7200RPM/32M).
    8. ODD--Samsung Super-Writemaster sh-s223c. No reviews available.9. Case--Cooler Master CM690 (comes with two 120mm fans).
    10. OS--Windows 7 Home OEM 64 bit.

    Thanks in advance.
  8. Hey folks,

    Hope all is well.

If you have been gracious to help me out in the past, thank you (notably Je_Saist and Father XMas). And to all, if I do not respond quickly, it's because of work.

**Note**I live in a country without Newegg or such, but any suggestions are truly appreciated. As I "may" be able to find recommended parts.

I am just about to post my final draft for my first ever self-made gaming rig that I am dying to play COX on. However, a few curve balls...

    1. Purchasing a GTX460 1Gb card of choice, but I have a Sony Trinitron CRT monitor with D-SUB (a.k.a. VGA). And I plan to keep my monitor. Just wondering how an adapter such as a DVI-I or DVI-A will affect me? I know LCD monitor typically take the brunt of compatibility issues. Being CRT, things should be ok, right?

Minor issues are no concern to me. But if there is going to be tremendous issues, I'll get a HD 6850 with D-SUB/VGA.

    2. CPU Cooler-which to pick for Phenom II x4 965 BE@3.4GHZ stock with possible "mild" future overclocking.

Ranking of two choices below http://www.bestcovery.com/best-amd-heatsink-fan

    A) 3Rsystem Iceage 120 Boss II (Top pick for AMD CPU's with manual fan control only) http://www.frostytech.com/articlevie...id=2461&page=1

    B) Zalman CNPS1OX Extreme (Ranked two spots below from above choice with "BIOS" fan control settings and a manual switch) http://www.frostytech.com/articlevie...id=2475&page=1

    3. PSU Choices:

Right now, no overclocking CPU or GPU.However, "if I learn" correctly, will overclock Phenom II x4 965 BE and, either, GTX 460 or HD 6850. Overclocking will be mild.

Whatever PSU I choose, I will make sure it is atleast 80 plus. If I can, I can pickup a Bronze or Gold certified pending wattage/brand. Just unsure of wattage for "now and later".

Right now I assume 600-650 watts? Later...

Any advice given is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  9. Hey folks,

Thanks for replies. Any further input would be greatly appreciated.

I notice from replies that some misunderstandings seem to have come about. My apologies. I should've stated more clearly that I was looking for a backup plan to what I had originally wanted (which I am about to just tough it and bitterly swallow the $1400).

My alternative plan will cost roughly $850-$1000 which doesn't even seem worth it. And I am listing the cheapest, reasonable items I can find/negotiate...

So is this system even worth buying for its "markup"?

    1. CPU: Phenom II x3 720be ($120-150) OR Athlon II x3 445 Lana ($110) The 720 is my first choice, if I get "lucky" can have 4th core. Plus O.C. from 2.8ghz to 3.7ghz with just stock and case fans.

    2. GPU: 1 GB HD 5670 ($130-$160)

    3. MOBO: Socket AM3 (AM2+ tad pricier than cheaper AM3, go figure...) Either Asus or Gigabyte with 785G/880G chipset ($110-$140).

    4. RAM: "Cheap" Dual Channel DDR3 1333 4gigs ($100-130).

    5. PSU: Antec 650w Earthwatt ($140)

    6. OS: Windows 7 64 bit Home ($130)

    7. Rest: HDD, ODD, Case ($130@minimal item values).

Total: Best cost scenario is roughly $860...Worst...beyond $1000. What to do? Choose first plan with much, much better parts for roughly $1400 or this one?

**Some irony, the DvD burner is made in this country and sold for roughly $30 here, but sold in the States for $20 on Newegg. My heritage is of this country, BUT so glaaaaad I can go back to America, eventually.

    Thanks in advance.
  10. Hey folks,

Hope all of you are well. Before I begin...if I don't quickly respond to my posts, it is because of work and Real Life (I wish I could petition the Devs, heh). In addition, I have literally spent weeks learning how to make a computer of which I am still digesting. Sorry for Noobish questions.

Let me say this twice: Do YOU really know how fortunate you are to have Newegg? Do YOU really know...?

I live in a country without it or anything of its like. So finding quality parts without massive mark up is very much a struggle. I was hoping to build my very first computer, however, dramatic price differences may create another reality. The following:

Amd phenom II x4 955BE (for OC'ing), Asus M4a88td-v evo/usb 3, Gigabyte Radeon 6850, 4 Gigs of G. Skill ram, PSU Corsair HX750W 80plus, WD 1TB, a LG ODD and Cooler Master case CM690 with OEM-Windows 7 64 bit. And toss in a cooling fan.

Newegg total is roughly $1000.00. BUT where I live it'll cost close to $1,400. (Comparison example Gigabyte card on Newegg is about $187, BUT here about $245-80.)

**So what to do now? Backup, what would be the (minimal) gaming specs I could get by on for a year or two? Details:

    1. AMD CPU to last and to help with burning home videos as well as streaming videos. (AMD is a tad cheaper here).

    2. A GPU that can handle COX definitely. And perhaps manage more intense things like a FPS such as CoD or so. Screen resolution beyond 1024 x 768 would be gravy. As for frames per second, try to be smooth.

    3. RAM-will DDR2 RAM still be useful for a while? DDR3 gets pricy for here. As for RAM timing...something that'll work.

    Thanks in advance...
  11. Thank you for replies. I really appreciate the time you guys spend on answering people's posts.

Also, do to my hours at work, I apologize for not responding quickly.

    Take care...
  12. Hey folks,

Hope all is well. Noob here...trying to match Radeon 6850 with a PSU. I am struggling to find Amp information for the Radeon.

Anyone know? I stumbled on a website that says this:

    Radeon HD 6850 CrossfireX - 35A and a 600W PSU minimum
    Radeon HD 6850 - 25A and a 450W PSU minimum

    http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=104805.0;wap2

    Can anyone confirm?

    Thanks in advance.
  13. Thanks for reply.

To answer your most important question, as for acquiring merits and such, not gonna happen any time fast.

Reason being Real Life allows me to only play an hour or perhaps up to three about once a week. Moreover, I don't belong to a SG (for many reasons) and not because i'm a misanthrope...heh.

As for accolades, Unique IOs and such, I would love to have them, but neither have the cash, the time to play or a method of "farming" merits.

And your point about accuracy...understood. But i'll manage. (Not sure if you noticed, but most of my attacks still have one slot unslotted which is for any random IO to increase Acc equaling 32-36%...).

I'm tempted to rewrite the build where it is almost "Soft-capped" squeezed with Aid-Self...
  14. Hey folks,

Hope all is well. This is my first time seriously trying to plan out a "Soft-capped" build with a few caveats:

    1. Not soloing AVs/GMs.
    2. Not PVPing.
    3. No Purps or any other "exorbitant" IO recipes.

In all, trying to "do" with the cheap stuff. Thanks in advance. (EDIT) Doh...forgot to remove the LOTG recharge...was playing around with "Dream" Build, heh.

  15. To je_saist and Father Xmas,

Wow! Thank you for your replies.

I have much to digest from the links and information you both provided. Gonna go read up...

    Thank you.
  16. je saist,

Thank you for reply. Good stuff to know. And I forgot to mention under Memory that I want DDR3...

    Thanks again.

Bare with me, as this will be my first time building a computer and I'm learning things as I go. I'm very much a noob.

I believe I confused a term in my post title. My apologies. I think I meant to say: "Which CPU?".

    Okies...

    1. CPU-Intel i5 750 Lynnfield as suggested by FatherXmas. AMD Phenom IIx4 965 or AMD's Phenom IIx6 1055T. If none of these are "really" necessary then a high end Intel Dual Core.

This is what I really want to know-which is best overall for needs/price?

    2. Memory-at least 4 Gigs or, if needed, 6 Gigs. But must be DDR3.

    3. Drives/Attachments-Just need a CD/DVD drive with 7200 rpm/SATA. No Lightscribe or such needed.

    4. Video Card/PSU-High end GeForce to run GR well. Running Ultra-mode would be a "perk". PSU strong enough to run one Video Card.

    5. OS-Windows 7 (64 bit Home premium).

Hope this helps. Thanks in advance.
  18. Hey folks,

Hope all is well. I'm in the process of buying an ASUS motherboard, but I'm not sure which is really best for my needs/playstyle:

    1. Games-Currently played is just COX. Future, maybe a FPS like CoD or a MMO such as DCU Online or Bioware's Star Wars.

    2. Bang for the buck-looking towards future. I think Intel's i5 is marginally better than both AMD's Phenom IIx4/IIx6. I know AMD is generally better "bang for the buck". On this note, why not just build a high end dual core instead of the 3 mentioned?

Also, do I really need a motherboard for two video cards? I just wanna pay for practical value/usage, not eye candy.

    Thanks in advance.

    Language Barrier

Thanks. Was thinking of shipping one over, but I've been told from a friend that my host country government is gonna tax the crap out of me (Hundreds of dollars).

Looks like I'm gonna be shelling out cash...

    Language Barrier

    Hey folks,

    In short....

I'm overseas, I'm not tech savvy and my problems will be programming language barriers.

    1. My new computer will be made with no English programs so my concern is with BIOS, OS and so on...Is there a way for me to change to English?

    2. Is there a way to change Win 7 to English or must I buy "another" copy in English?

    Thanks in advance.

Miladys_Knight, yikes...it is "rooting" for me. I rolled a low level and, even with Sonic's dmg debuffs, I will go bonkers.

    Thanks...
  22. Doh...didn't know that and actually suprised. But the damage debuffs from Sonic coupled with Defiance would seem to be well worth the exemption. I think?

    Thanks...
  23. Happy Holidays folks!!

For PVE and my playstyle (solo/team, drop targets fast without being *rooted*) between secondaries of /Elec and /Mental which one would best pair with Primaries of Sonic/ and Elec/?

    Thanks for any input...

I chose my power sets based off of what I thought would be fun/interesting to play, and ended up with Energy Melee / Electric Defense brute. Was this a mistake? Am I going to end up hating this character because of his inability to do anything? Seeing as how I'm a very casual player, and don't often look to min/max characters (I really just like being able to enjoy them, not necessarily be the best.) I'm not trying to find the absolutely most devastating build, but rather one that will do well and will be fun to play.

So, tell me wise Brute players, is this a bad combination? If not, does anyone have any hint, tips, or tricks for a new CoV player and a new Brute player? I'll be very grateful for anyone that takes the time to respond to this thread.

    Thanks,

Based on your title "...EN/ELA..." versus your post "...Energy Melee / Electric Defense...", I assume you mean Energy Melee/Electric Armour (EM/ELA) not Energy Melee/Energy Aura (EM/EA).

I was typing out a response which started to become incredibly long. So, in a nutshell, I would not pair EM with ELA, unless, you truly...truly don't care about min/max as you stated.

If you do, imho, I would pair Mace, Fire, Axe or SS with ELA. Or do EM with a Defense Based set and even Invul (if you IO for Defense).

    EM issues:
    1. No real AOE attacks. To compensate, a damage aura is needed.

    2. Stuns make foes jump/wander quickly from you. Chasing stunned targets down means loss of Build Up buff and loss of Fury.

    3. Two most devastating attacks also have significant animation times that can be your kryptonite (locked in animation while you get pounded).

    4. The above, your attacks come mid game.

    ----------------------------------------
    ELA issues with EM:
    1. ELA's damage aura is pretty much required to help make ELA more effective in survivability.

    2. Even though ELA has been buffed with "Energize", you still need Tough and, yes, even Aid-Self for Non-IO set, based toons. Energize fully slotted for recharge and heal is more mitigation than a panacea. Waiting for Energize to recharge can be annoying. Coupled with Energy Transfer's drainage of your Health; thus, affecting Health Recovery.

(Doubters? Try running Solo...a mission with +2/3 NPCs, set for atleast two Heroes with Bosses. Or even the latter but with no bosses with Tough/Aid-Self and no significant IO set bonuses.) This is minus Rikti.

    3. ELA with EM, having Aid-Self can be frustrating to use because of frequent interruptions by NPCs delivering DOT attacks, toggle attacks and such. For example, COT Spectral Demon using Midnight Grasp on you.

    4. Combination best benefits from Recharge IO sets and not building for Defense.

    YMMV.
