In the meantime why not post your personal stories of triumph and evil-doing along with screen shots? Sure, your computer graphics may suck like mine and not rival the standard set by MrPlayskool, but we won't mind. -
Jawbreak for joy!
Either that or it's the Shovel Smack Xtreme Games -
She needs a little cushion for the smashin'
-
Ok... I made her. She is Tomb Robber .
She's pretty. And as you can tell from the picture... STRONG! -
Wow. Something actually has me interested in rolling a Brute.

That is a great bonus to snow storm... the recharge slow. And I have been able to do the corner hide Snow Storm cast.. where I start with an eye-line to the enemy running towards a corner and hit it, so by the time it casts I'm behind a corner. It usually works. Though Quicksand I can simply toss out from behind a corner and not care about slowing recharge, since they can't see me to attack anyway. Still, I can understand making a case for either.
As far as Volcanic Gas goes, you're advocating three stuns INSTEAD of VG. Now, with VG and Fossilize you can handle a boss. VG is a mag 3 hold and can be cast while you're behind a corner.
Stalagmites is a great power, and I don't recommend losing it in favor of VG. It too is mag 3 and you can cast it from range.
Thunderclap, however, is only mag 2. As you pointed out, you can stack it with Stalagmites. The thing is, it's PB. So you have to run in and cast it. The great thing about Earth is all the powers are ranged. Sure the Stalagmites + TC combo works... but you have to run around a bit.
Fissure I look at as a damage power. It CAN do stun, but only with a 50% chance on those that it hits (and at mag 2).
I, personally, would take VG at 26 and do without TC or Fissure... or maybe even O2 boost.
Isn't this game great? So many workable combinations. -
Hi there! Thanks for the guide. I'm a huge fan of Earth and Storm. Though I must admit, I haven't tried them together. So take what I say with that in mind
My main reaction is: no VG and no QS?
With all that Storm gives you I can understand certain other powers that would be must haves to a /Sonic might be considered disposable to /Storm. Nevertheless, Volcanic Gasses is one of the best AoE holds in the game AND it sets up containment. It's great to be able to Earthquake one mob while you VG another. You can save your team time and time again by controlling two spawns at once. VG lets you do that in a very orderly way.
Quicksand is a fantastic defense debuff, sure.. but it's a wonderful slow that keeps enemies in Earthquake and Freezing Rain without stopping the knockdown, which is what Stone Cages does. I understand taking Snow Storm OR Quicksand... but in that case I'm taking Quicksand because it has the added defense debuff AND it's NOT anchored to an enemy who might be slaughtered before the rest of the mob, freeing them of the slow.
Agree with you about Salt Crystals. It sure looks cool, doesn't it?
Anyway, hope that helps. Thanks for giving two of my favorite sets some love!! -
Good guide! There's an idea, however, that I have that didn't see you address. See what you think:
Rain of Fire has all the negatives you have mentioned. However, I wonder if Rain of Fire could be one of your very best powers depending on how your use it?
I'm leveling a Fire/Storm corruptor, and I use Rain of Fire on every single mob... and it's glorious. Now, I get Snow Storm and Freezing Rain. You don't.
I get that.
But...
...if you were a /Fire or /Nrg blaster or something like that and you didn't travel with a partner who could lock down or extensively slow mobs all of the time I'd agree with your opinion that RoF is situational.
I suppose with /Ice you could say it's situational too... if your situation is arresting LOTS and LOTS of mobs!!!
And, hey... that's my favorite situation as a blaster.
Now, I don't have a Fire/Ice blaster. So this is speculation on my part. I acknowledge that. But hear me out....
With /Ice you have Ice Patch, which is way too small for your Rain of Fire needs. Rain of Fire is a 25 foot sphere. Ice Patch is 10 ft.
You have Chilling Embrace. But it too is only 10 ft. And you'd have to get in melee range. That's actually not a problem when you've got a tank or support toons with you.
The thing is: at level 28 you get Shiver. As the OP pointed out, it's a wide cone. It hits up to 10 enemies. Drop in 1-2 accuracies and 2-3 slows and you've seriously hurt your enemies' mobility. The key is the slow enhancements. You want those mobs to barely be able to move. (Alternatively you could slot 4 Pacing of the Turtles and get a 9% accuracy boost! If you like procs, you could toss in an Impeded Swiftness: Chance for Smashing Damage. Anyway, you get the idea.)
So... Shiver->Aim and/or Build Up->Rain of Fire. Sure the meanies will try to run... but NOW they won't get far! They'll still be grouped together. Then follow up with Fire Ball and Fire Breath. Now THAT is a mini-nuke!!!!
Why is that good?
Check out these damage scales:
Fire Ball - 1.26
Fire Breath - 1.755
Rain of Fire ~ 2.0 !!!
That totals around 5 DS. Inferno hovers at around 7.5. So yes, I'm saying you can pretty much drop a 5 DS collection of AoE attacks on every spawn. And yes, next to Inferno, RoF will deliver the MOST amount of AoE damage in your arsenal.
Against enemies that aren't affected much by slows, like Igneous or Wolves, you'll have to avoid the Shiver->RoF combo. But against other mobs you might do some great damage.
Try it out and see what you think. I'm guessing there might be some good synergy there, at least with mobs <= 10. And with mobs bigger than that, well, you're in a big team. There's a decent chance you ARE traveling with a defender or controller who can assist in the lockdown/slows. Let me know how it goes. EDIT: It sounds like Papaschtroumpf has tried it with success. I really encourage you to do so all well. It might be fun!
As an aside, Rain of Fire has an accuracy of 2.0. So don't bother slotting accuracies. Basic slotting suggestion is 3 damage and 2 recharge.
Thanks for the guide! -
Or both!, according to Joran's post in the Issue 11 thread.

Great guide, Phil. I've found your methods to work quite well. When I start a TF that I've organized I almost always tell the group, "I'm really looking forward to doing this TF with all of you."
You're so right about + reinforcement. Plus you're reinforcing your own gaming experience... that you're here to have fun too.
Seismic did all the tfs as PuGs and they were fun. The Dr. Quarterfield was the only one that was painful, since it was so long. But in all those cases people stayed. One of the groups had six Controllers, 1 Warshade, and a Scrapper. I called that the flying guillotine team....
Keep up the good work on the guides! -
Kudos for adding to the Sonic library. Thank you for this guide! I agree with almost all of it.
A few places where I have some extra input:
* As you hit your late 40s, consider pimping out Liquefy. Three Enzymes give you enhanced defense debuff, to-hit debuff, AND accuracy. That means you can pretty much hold the majority of a spawn for a moment, and massively debuff the rest. It's a great Alpha attack... no longer does the tank have to go in first! And if you're with a controller, the bosses will be locked down as well. Add recharges in the rest o the slots and, with Hasten or other recharge buffage, you're good to Liquefy quite often. The great thing is now we have Wentworths/BM, so you can easily buy these Hami-os. I got mine for 3-5 mil a piece.
* I like 1 recharge in Clarity. When I want it, I want it multiple times and quickly. Just my preference.
* Aside from Liquefy and Sonic Dispersion, a Sonic/Sonic has almost no damage mitigation from bosses or harder enemies. Siren's Song will not sleep them. Screech, as you mentioned, will only debuff them but not disorient. I highly recommend taking Shockwave and popping 2 accs in it. I cannot tell you how many times I have had some super bad boss-level-or-higher meanie run up to me, only to get fired backwards into the tank's aura or the controller's Earthquake or my own Liquefy. Even if there is no good place to send them, stopping them from attacking for several seconds is a major boost to your own survivability. I pretty much consider Shockwave mandatory for my Sonic Blast toons, both defenders and blasters, unless I go Storm or Kin.
* Regarding SR/DB - Tentacles + Liquefy is a great ghetto hold. Enemies can't move. And though they can attack, the to-hit debuffs (combined) keeps them from hitting much of anything. Instead of Shockwave you get Torrent. Torrent (into corner) ->Liquefy->Tentacles -> Nightfall is a great combo. -
If you really want to have fun, try an Electricity/Fire AoE Blapper.

Hey, glad the guide is still of use.
Keep the Earth/Sonic movement going!
I kinda like the orange sonic graphics, btw. I sincerely hope they solve the headache problem some people were having with the set.
concu and Reddy Kilowatt... thanks, you guys. Good to be back. And a special extra thanks to Reddy Kilowatt for posting the IO build. Try as I might, I just can't get into the IO thing. Maybe that will change soon. -
Hello! I'm baaaaaaaaack!
How is everyone? Glad to see the trusty Earth/Sonic is still embraced and represented. -
Thanks Luciferion! I hope you enjoy it.
In other news: my real life has become so busy that my gaming time has been reduced to pretty much nothing. As a result, I am parking my CoH/CoV account for the first time in three years so I can focus on the issues at hand. As you know, my ability to post to these forums will end as well. After 6/28/2007, I will be off the forums for the indefinite future.
All my best to the Earth/Sonics to come. May our rare but proud breed continue to bring justice to criminals throughout Paragon.
Best,
HBS -
I personally really like the chat channel information. Been using it for awhile now. It saves time in my opinion, and I have little problem reading the chat channel messages. I use the 4 tabs and redirect all my chat channels to them. Piece of cake.
When I post that a team is forming, it's nice to know immediately what name to invite instead of having to ask each time. Also, when other people post about forming teams, it's nice to see what level they are.
Also, I like to keep up on what people are playing even if they aren't in my global friends list without having to ask.
I'm a big fan of chat info in messages. I just wish there was a variable for the server you were on. But oh well. -
Great guide and thanks for the info on a really potent combination! I hope many people try it out and enjoy it.
Don't know Rad/, but one point worth mentioning:
* a tell to your fallen comrade to sit still, vengeance, recall friend your comrade into enemies, fallout, and the mutation is really cool (having been the bomb before... it's fun!)
Some minor minor thoughts on the sonic side:
* sonic attacks don't have accuracy penalties. Check out: http://coh.nofuture.org.uk/powersets...anged&set=
* Howl is a 20% resistance debuff... to even level enemies.
* I love Shockwave. Used wisely, it can keep an annoying boss off of you in one application. Screech -> Shockwave -> Screech can be the difference between life and death vs a boss if your debuffs are working elsewhere. Also, it's great for repositioning enemies. Those spread out spawns always leave stragglers... bounce the stragglers towards your tank's PB taunt aura or back at your green anchor. Really useful. Finally, Shockwave is great if you're initiating combat. Shockwave -> Howl, drop debuffs... avoid the alpha strike. Shockwave, I believe, is a matter of play style. But it's a fantastic tool for those who know how to use it.
* Siren's Song does not stack. Therefore you cannot sleep bosses with it. Why doesn't it stack? The damage portion of it wakes up anything that is sleeping. Try this: Siren's Song a mob. Now, do it again. They will wake up when the second one hits them, attack you once, then go back to sleep. Pretty tricky of those devs.
* Back on 12.7.06, Shout's range was increased to 40'.
* Resistance debuffs from Sonic attacks are temporary. So stacking more than 2 or 3 at a time is tricky.
Hope that helps!
Thanks again for the great guide. -
Thanks Sandolphan. I tried something like that before, but I couldn't get it to work. Also, it's nice to have the follow command in there if you need to close distance to deliver the shield.

Get three really good players and have them pick ATs and powersets that they have lots of fun with.
