This thread is still way to positive.
For the love of all things holy, can someone please have a legitimate gripe about this?
How about getting angry about VEATS? Or maybe about powerset proliferation? Something? Anything??
PLEASE FOR MY SANITY I NEED MORE DOOM!
When things are this positive, karma is bound to come back and slap us with "Oh yeah, and we're also including ED 2.0 in Issue 12!" type of announcement.

Damit now theve got all thees extra slots, all the vet playrs r going 2 be rollig up 1000s of uberbroken psy blastrrs OMGWTF! Psyblastors were lredy gunna break this game, and no were gonna have 10000000s of thm filing up the extra slots n theill take up all the gud names like wulverine and phenux and we get nikel an dimed WTF! AND OMG DEVS HAET VILANS!!!!
How was that?
[/ QUOTE ]
Well played, but it lacks in emotional connectivity.
Again... with feeling. -
3x the current number? Perhaps they figured that they'd be able to comfortably support that number on the new servers? <shrug>
EDIT: Jeebus Fire_Away. You've only got 9 posts. How is it that every time I post you end up on the same page as me in the last few days?!? -
[ QUOTE ]
Just want to add: Since I'm getting six free slots, it will be a while before I *need* to buy more slots, but I'll buy a 5-pack up front immediately to show my approval and send some cash the Devs' way!
[/ QUOTE ]
Yep. That's my story too, and I'm sticking with it. It has absolutely nothing to do with my raging alt-o-holicism. And I will definitely not have those 11 total slots filled within a week.
No... honest...
...
...
Stop looking at me like that. -
[ QUOTE ]
I really wanted to scan the thread for doom and gloom, but then I changed my mind. I'm getting FREE stuff, man! Who cares about anything else?
[/ QUOTE ]
I think the real, honest. full-blown doom and gloom count is at 2.
I'm not sure if I'm more surprised at how low that number is, or at the fact that anyone is actually upset by this announcement...
Bah, who am I kidding?!? I'm more surprised it's so low. -
Each slot can be assigned to a different server Hex.
-
[ QUOTE ]
I don't think anyone expected it to be part of the vet system.
[/ QUOTE ]
Actually, Pax____ and I called for it (independantly IIRC) as soon as powerset proliferation was announced, and then again when they first announced they'd actually be giving us the option to buy extra slots.
I'm not saying that we are the reason they did this, but we might be... -
[ QUOTE ]
I should be getting 7 slots on my first account

2 free slots, plus maximum of 4 slots from vet rewards = ...

Getting back on topic, I want to ask (in the nicest way I can) if it's not unreasonable to believe the following:
I love to play Cox. It's the best MMO on the market.
I believe everything in CoX should work as advertised. But it's not a perfect world so when it doesn't NCSoft should fix it in a timely manner. I believe the "known issues" list should be complete and up to date.
[/ QUOTE ]
Agreed on the known issues list. 100%
[ QUOTE ]
I should not have to be "buddies" with the devs to get what's broke fixed or have my point of view heard.
[/ QUOTE ]
You don't have to be. But the better informed and phrased your requests/issues are, the more likely they will be looked at.
[ QUOTE ]
I do not care if NCSoft has 15, 150, or 1500 devs employees. But I do expect a level of service for my subscription fee.
[/ QUOTE ]
First part of this is unreasonable. You simply can't expect a 15 person team to deliver what a 150 or 1500 person team can. And you do get a level of service. It's up to you to decide if it's a level of service that you deem acceptable vs the cost. If it's not, you need to decide if it's worth your continued financial support (note this is not a "LEAVE so I can haz your stuff").
[ QUOTE ]
I do not care who does what function at NCSoft. Tell me how my complaints are heard and act on them (even if it means telling me "no") and I will be happy.
[/ QUOTE ]
Again, unreasonable. If you take your issues to the wrong person, how do you expect them to be properly addressed? If you make a deposit with the janitor at the bank, don't be surprised if your account doesn't reflect it.
[ QUOTE ]
I understand that when it comes to "new stuff" or changes in CoX my opinion on what should occur may not happen.
I know that chances are whatever I say in the forums (no matter how well I say it) I will be probably slammed for my opinion. So please Fire Away.
[/ QUOTE ]
The better you state it, and more rational you are, the less likely you are to get slammed. Unfortunately, this is by no means a guarantee... -
[ QUOTE ]
Hmmm....
36 slots on 11 servers is 396 total alts.
Primary powers * secondary powers for all the character types (not including the new powersets!) is 400 possibilities ...
Not QUITE enough slots....

LOL.
And I thought I had a bad alt-o-holic syndrome. -

Whut izzit with people and the peeing their pants posts?!? Do we need to ask NCNC to include a free pair (set?) of depends with every I12 announcement? -

This is awesome !!!!!!....but I am waiting for "Oeh Noes Villaines got teh hosed" action on this as it seems to follow every I12 announcement...LOL
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm SO biting my thumb to keep from editing Posi's post and inserting "except villains" in random locations.
[/ QUOTE ]
LMAO!
Nice job NCNC. Everyone gets a little something for free, the vets get retroactive goodness (between my vet rewards and the 2 free slots I just saved $20), very reasonable pricing for addn'l slots for those that need them, we actually get the slots with I12 (when we need them the most) and a top-limit on slots that should make anyone happy... for a few months.
You'll be getting my $20 on day one. 6 new slots on my 2 main servers should hold me for a lil bit. -
[ QUOTE ]
In the formative days of the game scrappers kinda stunk and nobody wanted them for teams.
Kids today, think ya know everything. =P
Anyone who says they stink now is smoking the good stuff, but back in the day they did indeed underperform & were kinda sucky.
This is back when you could do more DPS using pool power attacks than using the MA primary, and when hurdle was faster than fly.
[/ QUOTE ]
Heh. Been here since day 2 (damn pre-order snafu) granpa. Played both blasters and scrappers quite a bit early on. I remember being told that DM/Regen scrappers sucked... until we started soloing AVs. -
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ]
For the first, I have to wonder what youre smoking. Scrappers have, historically, been gods in this game. They had the living hell nerfed out of them, in fact (although theyre still just about the most powerful ATs in the game). No game nerfs useless things.
[/ QUOTE ]
You mean that AT that doesn't do half the damage of a Blaster, has heavily resisted damage types, has been nerfed well past the level of usefulness in team situations (Seriously, my Blaster scraps better than my Scrappers and has the best damage mitigation in killing the enemies before they kill me) where everyone will do what you do, except, y'know, better.
[/ QUOTE ]
?!?
I'm glad I'm not playing whatever scrapper it is you're trying to play.
Scrappers: Not the best at any one thing, but very good at everything (well... other than range, lol). One of, if not the best soloers in the game. -
[ QUOTE ]
I know not of fanboys. But there certainly are "defenders of the faith" as you have taught me well Hallowed... Not that that is a bad thing.
[/ QUOTE ]
Heh, "Defender of the Faith"... seems to fit well with my name, no?
I criticize when I see the need, but I try to keep things in context. For example, I was distinctly getting the feeling/suspicion months ago that this dev team was gutted and understaffed, so I took that into consideration when evaluating things they did. I like to recognize things well done, or when a particular dev seems to go the extra mile. I will freely admit that many of my posts are dev-friendly, especially in the last year or so.
This has not always been the case though. I was highly critical of many of the decisions made under the "old regime". However, I usually restricted those thoughts to my SG boards or in-game conversations, where people knew me and understood where I was coming from. Mostly I didn't post here early on, b/c I wasn't sure my posts would be phrased in a manner that they'd be in any way, form or function constructive. There was a good chance they'd just be rants contributing to, or starting, flame-wars. Since there are always plenty of those posts around, I didn't feel the need to join the unwashed masses.
Heck, Julie the Cruise Director (LH) has raised my ire on several occasions, even within the last year, and I know I probably tip-toed that decency/anger/outrage/frustration line...
Honestly, I get more p/o'ed at some of the total lack of decency and respect shown on these forums. Most of the time, I ignore it, but repeated ignorant/nasty postings from the same individual(s) will eventually get to me and may prompt a response. I have understanding for people occasionally stepping over the line, especially about something that effects them "directly" and they are passionate about. But, there should be limits.
Eventually I feel compelled to defend those being (in my opinion) unjustly attacked. I've done it for devs and forumites alike. It's a character-flaw perhaps... a bit of a white knight complex...
And then, occasionally, there are the my stupid attempts at humor... no comments from the peanut gallery please! Critics be damned. -
Samuel waxes a mite verbose, methinks.
I do think the "fanboi/carebear" label gets overused... a whole lot. But I do think that it applies in some cases (though in truth I've seen it more outside of this game than in... see movies, comics etc). -
[ QUOTE ]
wtf is a freem?
and no, you didnt really answer much.
[/ QUOTE ]
FREEM is a reference to the April Fools joke.
The FREEM 15 is a name that's being tossed around for the 15 people compromising the entire CoH/V development staff for at least the last 1.5+yrs.
Read that again... fifteen people.
That's barely enough people to run a decent-sized fast-food joint, let alone an MMO.
So, the development team had a choice: They could dedicate all their time to finding and fixing existing bugs, with no guarantee of success (bug hunting, especially in a complex and seemingly not clean program such as CoH/V is a daunting task), letting the game stagnate, or they could develop new content.
Let's put that into perspective. They need to keep the content of the game fresh enough to keep their existing player-base, many of whom are long-term veterans and have seen most, if not all, that the game has to offer, interested and excited. They have to do this with the 8million pound gorilla of WoW in the room. And, to top it off, they know that the "replacement for CoH/V" is being developed (until recently in house, no less). So, if they don't continue to add more content, there is a very real chance that the game looses enough subscribers to no longer be considered financially viable and they are all (or at least most) out of a job.
So, given the option of doing something that continues to expand the game, or having the game grow stagnant (or even just appear to grow stagnant, which is bad enough) and potentially loose your job, what would you choose?
Also, even if they had "Ix: Statesman Gets a Makeover" which they dedicate to bug-fixing, there will be bugs they won't find or can't fix. Not only will a large portion of the player-base not care about bug-fixes, and consider the issue to be a complete waste of time, but of those that do care, there will be some who will be p/o'ed just because the bug they think is "game-breaking/ruining" doesn't get addressed.
And please don't give me "if this were the military". It's not. It's a game. Also, the military does not exactly have a stellar track record (as of late especially) of doing things right and quickly addressing issues (not the fault of the lower ranks, certainly). Proper body-/vehicle armor anyone? And the consequences there are far worse than any problem that may crop up in the game. [And let's please let the military discussion end there. I don't want this to deteriorate into an anti-/pro-military/Iraq war debate of flame-war. I only mention it at all because of the previously used examples.] -
[ QUOTE ]
If you ever really want abuse, sit the customer service desk at the cable TV company (or perhaps maybe record your very own conversations with them). Not too many call in to their cable TV provider to thank them for the new HD TV channels, sympathize with their corporate staffing woes (down to the level of making sure they get it right on who stayed and who left), and overlook longstanding flaws like signal loss or the removal of channels that they really want to watch. But this same kind of thing happens in CoX every day.

If you work/worked for Comcast, I have no sympathy.

[ QUOTE ]
All this military talk has got my juices flowing.
Full disclosure: I did 26 years in the military; started out in communications and ended up Commanding Officer of a computer support organization. Now I'm retired and have mostly played CoX all day for the past 3 years (I admit I'm hooked and have no other real life). This is only my second post (I've been content reading the forum action from the sidelines but recently decided I needed to post in the forum to attempt to be a change agent for the game I love).
I also wanted to mention I attended the last dev meet and greet gathering and to a person they are friendly, intelligent, and dedicated individuals that most certainly rate our courtesy, admiration and respect. But forgive me if I fail to see the need to coddle them in order to have my point of view considered. To me that is as bad... or perhaps worse than being too blunt.
I agree with 95+% of the proposed guide. But before political correctness and the self appointed forum sheriff's posse completes the lynching of those that are upset or perhaps a little rough around the edges (I'm not talking about those who grossly violate the forums posting rules) may I respectfully make a one small point about this guide?
I take issue with much of the section on patience and bug fixes. As some of the games problems approach their 2nd year anniversary without resolution, I believe many of the player's complaints in this area are fully justified (albeit that some of these complaints were inappropriately expressed). The premise that the devs would fix everything if they could in an instant is more than a bit misleading.
My view is conscious decisions have been made to pursue new features over taking corrective action to have the game more effectively perform as advertised. I am opposed to these decisions. If it were my organization, I'd call a good old fashion military standdown from new stuff development and go on a massive bug fix effort. This is certainly not without its own pain/risk. But I believe it would be worth it.
This post is already a bit too long already but let me make one other quick point. Just because a task (mission) is hard or complex is not really a justification to leave it's accomplishment ignored or open ended. But as a military man, you already know that and I acknowledge that was not what you were implying. But unfortuately, in my opinion, that has been precisely the case here in some instances.
Congratulations on a nice guide that appears to be very well received.
[/ QUOTE ]
damn, sir...you nailed it.
i grow tired of all the lil bugs that get ignored myself. maybe if they wern't so obsessed with new content. fix what we already have! how about let an issue sit for 3-4 months and nail down errors. Am I the only person who wonders what roman/greek/spartian lore and costumes have anything to do with comic book heroes? I agree power set prolif was needed. it was an easy fix to a lack of choice situation. but the rest of I12? I have a feeling it is an egg about to be laid on the part of this game. I9-I1 will go down as being some of the best ever. I don't have that feeling about I12.
thanks for pointing out my frustrations, sir. carry on.

YOU!!!
You take that back RIGHT NOW!!!
Jeebus... how low can you go?!? -
[ QUOTE ]
Well, I guess Jack was full of hot air when he insisted CoH was still going strong because LOOK! Cryptic is hiring. Ah, well. A Sam always forgives. But he never forgets.
Just the same, it's amazing how much cool stuff 15 people have been able to come up with. What perplexes me is what others have mentioned, as well - the content the Surviving 15 came up with was superior in every way to the all the content that came before. The last few Issues, even if I may not agree with all that was added, were easily the best thing that's happened to the game, by far. Well, after the addition of CoV, but that's a little more than "an Issue"
My hat's off to you, guys, for being able to do so much pretty much each on his or her own. Amazing work out there. While your team was being downsized, all I kept thinking was how this game was only getting better and better. Sure had me fooled!
I'd also like to address specific thanks to BaBs for taking SO much time out of his life to post on the forums and keep us all informed and involved. I'd also like to thank him for being so cool as to accept AND respond to PMs, and do so with surprising speed. Hell, I had one PM answered within something like 15 minutes of sending it. Plus, it takes a REAL man to be called BaBs and still keep going strong
And, of course, I have to thank Castle, as well, for braving the frustration of being the fall guy for every whine on the board and proudly wearing the bullseye with dignity and stoicism while still keeping us well informed of not just the bottom line, but also why it was decided on.
Yeah, doom or no doom, I think we may well have the best development team ever

You know, I often disagree with Samuel's positions, but I've never had an issue with his ability to phrase his thoughts.
Well said.
Hats off to the FREEM Fifteen! (I will be a proud papa if that term sticks)

QFT! Oh man, that is so absolutely true. I just replied to a post about such a thing too.
THANK YOU you small tiny group of devs, for sticking with it and toughing out the lean times, because we KNOW you're going to do great with flunkys at your feet.
What a trial by fire, huh?
[/ QUOTE ]
Amazing. I have some idea of the work involved and the fact that 15 people or so not only kept the game afloat, but did such amazing things over the last year+, is a testament to their skill and dedication. I really hope people take a little bit of time off from complaining and think about what's been accomplished.
It's interesting to hear this number confirmed, btw. Based on information that had recently come to light, I had estimated the dev-team size at 18 people. Looks like I was pretty close.
