  1. Are you logging out of the game with your toon in a SG base? This will crash you every, single time when you try to relog back in.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Leaving the whole "is it unique or not" argument out of the equation, if I slot this in a power like Targeting Drone or Focused Accuracy, both toggles, does this mean that every 10 sec, I have a 5% chance for a Build Up effect?

Based on my understanding of uniques in toggles, it should, but I don't seem to observe anything happening with my /Dev blaster.

Why oh why is there nothing on the synch bug? When I encountered it on test during open beta, i thought it was a fluke. It has gone live and is making the game unplayable for quite a few people. Please address this issue.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Have you been ignoring the Community Digest? (Which when i jsut tried to check it it was wiped clean, but it has been on there)

Also, this bug has been around since at least i7, if they could simply fix it, it would of been by now.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The issue though, is that the synch bug is happening with a far greater frequency now. Before I12, I'd see it (meaning, mostly, that it'd happen to teammates) about once every 2-3mo. Since I12, I've seen it about 10 times (and I haven't been able to play nearly as much as I normally do recently).

So it's gone from a minor, occasional annoyance to a frequent problem. Thank god we have 3 SG members with the assemble the team vet reward...
  4. I have a kin def that I like to break out every now an dthen just for sillies. Repel has so many uses.

Perhaps my favorite thing was to stand at the edge of a building, TP a mob to the edge of the roof, slide up close and launch them. Repeat til they have only a sliver of health left, TP, brawl... find next victim.

Also, trying to launch mobs over the police drones and into the central part of Atlas is fun.

I just tried to buy slots, Tuesday 05/27/2008 10:45pm EDT. Couldn't find the payment service.

During peak hours, you may experience problems. If the transaction doesn't go through, I would recommend that you try again or make an attempt during non-peak (i.e. morning) hours.

I was just able to complete a transaction at 9:37PM PST (after about 5-6 tries). And I'm not using any special privileged connection to make that transaction.

We're monitoring it, and working to resolve it. I don't have an ETA for a long-term fix, but we've been nudging a couple of cogs in the background. The good news is that other players have been able to complete transactions as well.

I just tried again. Wednesday, 05/28 at 7:46am EDT. No luck.

I was unable to process a purchase yesterday at 7:30pmish EDT, but was able to get it through on my 1st try this morning just before 9am. Just keep trying.

If the wait/progress bar sits for more than a minute, cancel and try again. Each of the 3 times I've bought slots, the process went through within 30sec or so (to the final confirmation screen), or I just canceled and tried again. My slots were usually applied within 1-2min after that.

  7. I try to not critique guides too harshly, especially given that I've been to lazy to put up one of my own, but I have some major issues with some of the things recommended here.

    First, though, I want to admit that I don't have a Stone/Elec. I do, however, have both a high-lvl Stone/ and a high-lvl /Elec.

    1) Lack of Fault in the build. Fault is one of the staples of Stone/. It gives you, and your team some great damage mitigation. I'd grab it as soon as possible and 4-6 slot it asap.

    2) Lack of Aid-Self: Coupled with Fault especially, this will make you nearly unkillable

    3) Just 1 Dam in Seismic Smash: Should have 2... especially with no Build-up

    4) Static Shield comes too late in the build

    5) Accro vs Grounded: Grounded, while it doesn't protect you if you're off the ground (and occasionally fails on inclines), costs no end and provides addn'l protection/benefits. With the reduction to accro's KB protection, there is almost no reason to go accro over grounded unless you spend a lot of time in the air. Also, slot a res, not -end enhancer

    6) Lightning Reflexes 3/5?!? No. Uh uh. Nyet. Nein. Ochi. Non and other things that mean no. Lets ignore the +run/fly for a sec (which is nice). +20% recharge bonus to all powers! Always. At no end cost. It's a reason to play /Elec (though by no means the only one). 5/5

    7) Both Conserve Power and Power Sink: This is probably overkill, especially with stamina, unless you choose to just remove most end reducers from all your powers.

I'm curious... have you actually taken this build to higher levels (32+), or if this is just a conceptual build for the most part? If you have taken the build to higher levels, what difficulty do you run your mishs at?

There just seem to be some serious flaws here based on my experiences with the sets individually.
  8. While I agree with your post, your string-of-too-many-words has broken the thread. Please fix.

Kinda like the article. It's a good insight into what thought went into the Roman zone and all. I do hope it's just the beginning, I want Nazis, I want dinosaurs, I want feudal Japan...

I do wonder if we'll ever see 'reverse time-traveling' ATs come in. If heroes and villains can go back in time to meet the Romans, why couldn't the Romans go forward in time, following their new hero/villain friends? Give us more ATs to play as, ones who start off in Cimerora and take that plunge thru the gate to get to Paragon City or the Rogue Isles.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Fully in agreement with the first part. Also, to go with the Nazi's I'd like more military uniforms, with dinosaurs I'd like loincloths/wrap skirts/leather/fur (primitive) clothing options (and staves/spears) and more samurai/ninja-esque costume options to go with Japan.

You will not see new ATs from the past making their way into CoX though. Once you have the /shield defensive set, you have the tools you need to make ancient warriors. All you need is a little imagination and backstory.

1 Freebird/Celerity/Unbounded Leap/Time and Space Manipulation +stealth. When first released these IO's (except for time and space) could be slotted into Passive/Always on powers like Fitness/Swift or Fitness/Hurdle to create perma-stealth. That was long since fixed. Now these IO can only install into the appropriate travel power. If you are someone that takes multiple travel powers, you can only ever install one +stealth IO. Example: if you have Flight and Superspeed you can install either; Freebird +stealth or Celerity +stealth, NOT both. Also something to note: your inherent sprint powers can be slotted with Celerity or Unbounded Leap +Stealth.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Is this supposed to be fixed in I12 or no, I can't remember off hand. Anywho, you can still currently slot celerity and unbounded leap +stealth IO's in swift/hurdle/sprint. I just slotted one in my sprint the other day.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You can slot run & jump stealth IOs into sprint (or the prestige sprint powers), because they are not passive powers. They are toggles. Activating the toggle activates stealth (and lasts for 2 min after the toggle is turned off).

You can't slot the stealth IOs into swift and hurdle, because they are passives, and the ability to do so was removed due to some issues this caused (whether or not this was the right solution to the problem is another issue entirely).

Oh and to the OP: Great post. Thanks.

For most users, we know that when we Alt-Tab (or minimize one program and then maximize another) there's always a chance for a fatal crash in the CoH client.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Most?

Not my experience at all. Out of the group of people I regularly play with, and the various other friends and PUGs I've run with, the only ones crashing due to alt-tabbing are a) Mac users running CoH and Vent on their XP partition and b) Vista users. Those 2 groups don't seem to qualify as most.

That's not to say the game itself doesn't lock up/crash on occasion (more frequently recently it seems), but that seems to happen regardless of alt-tabbing or not.

Burn him at the stake for not liking the interview! I myself had to read the notes

    [/ QUOTE ]

No. Burn him (?) at the stake for being a complete [WARNING EXPLICIT LYRICS] about it. If he'd said "That interviewer was pretty bad. There was way too much dead air", then I would not have an issue with it. I'd internally disagree, but probably would not have said so.

Also, he clearly didn't take the format of the interview into consideration (over Vent, so [considerate] people tent to pause excessively so as to not talk over each other, and with live questions coming in over chat [or PM]). You could clearly hear Jules typing (at least I think it was her) throughout the interview as she handled the chat questions.

Finally, no matter how bad he thinks Jules was, she's contributed to CoH/V for quite some time and has earned the right to have an off day and/or be cut some slack. Poor girl was clearly nervous too.

EDIT: I thought she was fine, btw.

I can imagine the player created missions being non-reward until they are approved in some way.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well I can see it being defaulted like normal mishes. If we are able to put our own AV's in the arc then they should reward properly. I mean an AV is an AV and the minions, LTs, Bosses already have their coding for xp + difficulty settings I am sure, so I don't see where there can be an issue with rewards.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Picture someone deciding that their TA/A defender is levelling just a bit too slowly.

Now picture a mission with nothing but rooms full of minions with little or no range, each with a door too narrow to exit, but wide enough to shoot through.

Now picture Oil Slick Arrow being fired into those rooms and ignited, one after the other, over and over, while otherwise staying out of line of fire.

And at the end of the mission, an AV with no flight or leaping and minimal range at the bottom of a hole, while the defender stand up here next to the cluster of green and blue buff crystals.

I can just imagine what a PL farming team would make, if they could make their dream mission.

There's all sorts of fun things that might be possible if they give us enough lattitude, but that same lattitude will make the mission content itself highly exploitable.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Arcana, you know that none of those scenarios are likely.

    a) We won't be able to reduce mobs defenses, resistances, damage, accuracy or range etc.
    b) We won't be able to create broken maps like you describe
    c) Nobody will waste their time making maps just to PL a TA/A defender.

What you are failing to distinguish here is that City of Heroes is a business. You are actually defending the ownership as if they were a bunch of good guys doing something for our benefit, without any compensation. Your rhetoric is nothing shy of "fan-boi support". They are selling a product, and customer service is an important part of any successful business.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    [ QUOTE ]
If I buy a burger at McDonald's, and it is incorrect, or lacking something that I expect to be there, I have a legitimate gripe with the company. I do not expect the person behind me to tell me that I just don't appreciate the effort that WAS put into it and I should just live with what I got, and I do not expect many others to feel differently. I am paying for something, and I should get what I pay for, within reason.

    [/ QUOTE ]

It's been stated many times: What you pay for is access to the game. Nothing more, nothing less. You can hope and ask that the game deliver things that you, specifically, like. If the game fails to deliver those things, or other negative aspects outweigh the positives for you, you can choose to vote with your wallet and leave. When you accuse the devs of a lack of respect for the player-base, you delve deeply into the realm of rhetoric.

To use your (rather poor) analogy, if you're not happy with your burger, and you say "I'm not happy with this burger because of a, b and c. Fix it" you may get results (especially if you're polite and nice about it). If, on the other hand, you say "you clearly don't appreciate and respect me enough if you're going to serve me this burger" then you're an [WARNING EXPLICIT LYRICS], and the odds of getting a satisfactory resolution drop considerably.

    [ QUOTE ]
An economy was created by the developers. In-game at first, but is now being exploited by others with no affiliation to the CoH staff. Real money is being traded as part of an in-game mechanism. I cannot believe that there is not some sort of legal action that can be taken, because in essense, the spammers are making money off of selling intellectual property. It is akin to the music industries issues with digital downloading.

    [/ QUOTE ]

As you yourself state, the exploitation is not coming from the CoH staff. This would be an entirely different discussion if it were and then your complaints of a lack of respect would certainly have some validity. However, the CoH staff has been putting in systems to deal with in-game spam. Depending you ones point of view (for myself, the RMT spam as it stands now is not a really issue anymore), the steps may not be sufficient, but to deny that they have done so is pure fallacy. Additionally, they have announced that additional systems will be put in place with I12. Only time will tell how effective these new measures will be.

Furthermore, just because you can't imagine that some legal action can't be taken, doesn't mean that's the case. Since I'm not a lawyer, I simply don't know, and won't speculate. Even if this falls under the domain of IP violations, actually legally pursuing such a claim would be, at the very least, time-consuming and expensive. Personally, I'd rather see the money spent elsewhere.

    [ QUOTE ]
What's more, is that the non-action against in-game spamming is just another of the many issues the game has. There is outdated content that is not updated, nor eliminated, that is popular enough to warrant action, like the eden trial and the sewer trial. There are multiple bugs in the animations of certain powers that affects game play, like the radiation/storm debuffs and the like.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Completely separate issues. They have nothing to do with the topic at hand.

    [ QUOTE ]
What seems to be most important to the development team is creating new content, and not addressing long standing playability issues. A saying that is common in the circles I play within is "Costumes are the opiate of the masses". Distract us from current issues rather than address them.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I reiterate again... fifteen people. That's the size of the entire development staff that's been working on the game for the last 3+ issues after Cryptic gutted the staff.

That's barely enough people to run a decent-sized fast-food joint, let alone an MMO.

So, the development team had a choice: They could dedicate all their time to finding and fixing existing bugs, with no guarantee of success (bug hunting, especially in a complex and seemingly not clean program such as CoH/V is a daunting task), letting the game stagnate, or they could develop new content.

Let's put that into perspective. They need to keep the content of the game fresh enough to keep their existing player-base, many of whom are long-term veterans and have seen most, if not all, that the game has to offer, interested and excited. They have to do this with the 8million pound gorilla of WoW in the room. And, to top it off, they know that the "replacement for CoH/V" is being developed (until recently in house, no less). So, if they don't continue to add more content, there is a very real chance that the game looses enough subscribers to no longer be considered financially viable and they are all (or at least most) out of a job.

So, given the option of doing something that continues to expand the game, or having the game grow stagnant (or even just appear to grow stagnant, which is bad enough) and potentially loose your job, what would you choose?

Also, even if they had "I X: Statesman Gets a Makeover" which they dedicate to bug-fixing, there will be bugs they won't find or can't fix. Not only will a large portion of the player-base not care about bug-fixes, and consider the issue to be a complete waste of time, but of those that do care, there will be some who will be p/o'ed just because the bug they think is "game-breaking/ruining" doesn't get addressed.

    [ QUOTE ]
Do not degrade this into a flame war. I have a valid opinion, and one that I am sure is shared by many. This is an open discussion about the issue, and my only forum for letting the staff know how I feel.

    [/ QUOTE ]

When you have a request like this, it's best to:
    a) Choose your words carfully.
    b) Not begin your post with abject dismissive categorization of the other party.
    c) Not bring in other, unrelated issues.
    d) Avoid statements like "costumes are the opiate of the masses" which, while clever, will automatically alienate some.
  21. [ QUOTE ]
What I don't understand is why the burden of policing the spammers, both sending tells and emails, is the burden of the paying customer. If this was truly viewed as a burden by ownership, an action planned would have been formulated, implemented, and working presently. What I suspect is that the the financial aspect of creating that sort of plan is greater than the loss of membership due to the inconvenience. If the in game spammers actually affected the bottom line of CoH, then your head would spin at how fast this would happen. This "wait until it's convenient for us to fix it" approach is an all too common of a way that problems are approached. If the developers wanted to show the respect and appreciation for their customers, this would have been immediately addressed. The lip service it has recieved so far is a far cry from the answer, and nothing will be done until financial jeopardy is attributed toward it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You are aware of the fact that the dev team has been 15 people total (after Cryptic gutted them) since in-game spam has actually become an issue (I9), right? The kind of decisive and immediate attention you describe takes quite a bit of man-hours.

Also, steps have been taken to help with the problem. When spam tells were at their peak, I was getting a spam tell roughly every 5-15 min every single night. Now I see 1-3 per week.

I would suspect that precisely because the tell route has been addressed (not completely, but with some definite success) is the reason the email spamming has become an epidemic. Now, in I12, further tech is being implemented to combat email spam. We'll see how successful it is.

I think that it's interesting that you decry the supposed lack of a show of respect and appreciation that the devs have for the players, while showing you have a lack of either for them yourself.

The devs here are not perfect, far from it. But no other MMORPG dev team has ever shown how much they appreciate their payer-base as this one does (to my knowledge and experience anyways).
