  1. Ok, this will be a long post. I have CoH helper log, HiJackThis log and DxDiag log. you will notice I am not using the most recent ati driver, but the one installed is stable and the newer one caused crashing again like I was getting from my nVidia card before. Maybe someone will see something I have missed. I have been dealing with random crashes up till I put in the new ati card and then they came back when I applied the hotfix to fix to make CoH work.

  2. After installing the hotfix the game was playable, but not long after I started getting the random crashes again that I was getting with my nVidia card. I rolled back the hotfix and it stopped again. Perplexed now.

It's a good thing I am enjoying STO. I guess I will take a break from CoH till this gets fixed at a later date. I would rather have a stable computer then have all the random crashes.

Thanks for the help. I am downloading the hotfix now. Hopefully it will fix the problem, I would hate to not be able to play this game.

Edit: Downloaded and installed the hotfix and all is good now. I can actually set everything to max now
  4. I was running into this same issue with my nVidia card, so I replaced it with an ATI card. The crashing has completely stopped, but CoH is unplayable with the new card. All my other games work great, but CoH strobes and then pixelates.

I never could find a solution to the random crashing with my nVidia card. I did read if you do a reinstall of Vista and never do any updates the problem will go away. I just wasn't willing to go that route myself.
  5. I upgraded my video card last week from my trusty nVidia 8600gt to an ATI 4670 and now when I log into the game it isn't playable anymore. The screen flashes and then will start pixelating. I can log in in safe mode, but it still has problems then. They just aren't as severe. I seem to only have this issue in COH, Star Trek Online runs flawlessly on max settings. I have always heard there are issues with ATI cards and this game, but i never thaught it was this bad. I read through the sticky thread at the top of this forum and tried some of the things in there, but since I can't get into the game and see anything I can't change any settings in game.

Has anybody else run into this? Changing back to the nVidia card isn't an option as it was causing random crashes. I am running Vista x64 Ultimate with 8gig of ram and I only run into this problem in CoH
  6. My favorite set for AoE is War Mace. With just a moderate amount of +recharge I am able to use the 3 AOE attacks as my attack chain and through Clobber in there for the harder targets. I prefer it to both Fire and Elec.

    Brutes on paper

Looks at all the Brutes listed in my sig...Yes they are that much fun!

I have played a few other sets, but I just love Brutes.
  8. I am currently leveling a Mercs and I plan on skipping it. The long recharge and short duration just don't seem worth it for a very situational power.
  9. I have 3 Numina's and 3 Perf Shifter's in mine. That gives you 2x 28.1 hp, +12% regen, and +5% movement. It also recharges in 25.6 seconds for 56% heal off 10 targets.
  10. I never wait till 50 to start slotting IO's. Around level 30 I will start buying sets and slotting them. SO's are very expensive since you have to replace them every 5 levels, so I find it best to go ahead and switch to IO's myself.

As far as slotting I posted, I normally don't fight +3's or +4's while leveling up so one acc in LF is fine and before level 35 the end mod does no good in it since you don't have Power Sink. I also tend to respec out of Power Surge once I get all my IO sets slotted. My electric armor Brute predates IO's and I remember using power surge a lot back then as it is an awesome godmode power.
  11. my typical SO slotting is

Charged Armor 3 resist/1 end redux
    Lightning Field 2 end redux/1 acc/2 damage/1 endmod
Conductive Shield 3 resist/1 end redux
Static Shield 1 end redux in base slot optional: upto 3 resist
Grounded 1 resist in base slot( good place for a -kb IO also)
Lightning Reflexes 1 run speed in base slot
    Energize 3 recharge/3 heal
Power Sink 3 recharge/3 end mod
    Power Surge 3 recharge
  12. Why go to all the trouble of soft capping defenses when a stone armor brute is already extremely tough with just SO's? I have never found a time when I thought more defense would have saved me. I would rather gets sets to over come the -speed and increase +recovery on my stone/stone. Having all that recharge doesn't do any good if you don't have any endurance and can't get to the fight. Of course if you can depend on having a kin around without fail then you don't have to worry about those problems.

I have been playing a stone/stone for several years now and he is still one of my favorites. One of the nice things about the combo is that it is good even with just SO's, but if you can overcome the -recharge and -run speed then it becomes godly. Here is my current build on mine and with it you won't be depending on a /kin very much. I actually solo this guy at +2x8 very easily.

I am open to Corruptors and Masterminds since they can both get sets that help a team.
I play like this myself sometimes and I find a /sonic corrupter works best for resistance based defense sets. The only time you will have to alt tab is to apply new shields, the rest of the time just turn on toggles and set to follow. If you are running a defense based brute then go with an /FF Mastermind and set the pets on aggressive and the MM of follow. Makes for very fast soloing and all you have to do is alt tab to the mastermind every 4 minutes to reapply shields. Another thing you can do is skip most of the attacks on the corrupter and take the leadership pool for even more buffs.
  15. You are getting close to the AoE goodness of WM. I picked up shatter at 26, whirling mace at 30, and crowd control at 32 when I first leveled up. Once you have those slotted and a little recharge those 3 plus clobber will be an excellent attack chain.

I wish there was a way to 'try out' powers before getting them. I'd like to give 'Static Discharge' a Spin, but don't love the idea of burning a respec to do it... :\
Copy your character over to the test server and respec there. You can copy as many times as you want, so try out a build before you apply it to your live build.
  17. I leveled my WM/EA from 1 to 50 without Aid Self. There were times it would have been nice to have, but I just can't stand the long activation on the power so I did without it. Once you get Energy Drain slotted up you won't miss it, at least I didn't.
  18. When I was in the late teens with mine I picked up taunt so I could hog all the aggro on teams and I loved having VEATs to team with since they boosted my defenses. Keep it up, it will get a lot better in just a few levels.
  19. You could also go with Dark Armor and set the colors to a blue/green. The animations kind of look like rippling water if you set the colors right. Dark only has a knockback hole also which is very easy to fill. Skip CoF since it wouldn't fit the concept, but everything else would.
  20. - Endurance problems make this build hard and not very fun to play solo.

Most brutes have endurance problems at this level. One of the things I like to do is slot my attacks with at least 3 end redux DO's, sometimes 4. I don't worry too much about Acc or anything else till SO's are available. This works real well with the new difficulty settings since you can increase the number of mobs with out increasing their level. I actually tend to fight -1 foes to speed up kill time and just push up the number as far as I can.

    - Teaming seems like the best way to earn experience right now, because there are some enemies that Konsultant has an extremely hard time killing.

This is how I got through the rough teen levels. Find a team that can give you some support and they will fly by.

    - Pulverize made my chain much nicer for now, but the onset of SOs and stamina might lessen its usefulness later on.

I leveled mine up before the changes to WM came out so clobber wasn't a damage attck at the time. I used the the first 3 attacks for my attack chain.

    - Did I mention endurance problems? Because they are a factor.

These can definitely be minimized. I have level up a lot of brutes and pretty much don't have endurance issues anymore. This isn't an issue with this build specifically, but with brutes in general.

    - Overall fun solo Pre-17 DO refill = 1.5/5: Slow and hard to level, very little fun to be had.

I find this to be true on a lot of characters in general. If I can get to 20 then I am happy and things really take off from there.

    - Overall fun teaming pre-17 DO refill = 3/5: Team mates with Speed Boost make my life much easier, but I didn't do enough damage due to being lackeyed.

Teaming always makes things more fun and faster.

    - Overall fun post-17 DO refill = 3/5: Much better, and much higher survival rate. Feel like EA is actually blocking attacks, and War Mace started connecting with meaty thumps again, though Endurance downtime is still annoying.

Once you get SO's you will think you actually have a secondary. It is one of the reasons I have a hard time leveling defense sets.

On a Brute brawl serves as a very good fury builder. Set it on auto and let it fill any gaps in your attack chain. After all it doesn't cost any endurance to use and you will like seeing your fury bar fill up faster.
  22. On my WM/EA I found the low level game to be very different from the high level game. Right now you are mainly single target, but once you have Shatter, Crowd COntrol, and Whirling mace you will shift to an AoE style predominantly. I still have all of the low level attacks but rarely use them. I have enough recharge in my build that my attack chain is just the 3 AoE attacks with Clobber thrown in on hard targets. Another thing you may want to look at is adding taunt in if you team a lot. I found it very hard to tank in the early levels with out it. At 50 it isn't a problem since I throw around so much AoE and fire off Energy Drain every 25 seconds.

Another thing is IO's make a huge difference on EA. My current build is soft capped and can take on pretty nuch anything out there. That wasn't the case pre-IO's. I had some frustating times and the early 40's were real tough. I hope you can push through any hard times because the end is well worth it.
  23. Bubbagimp is my WM/EA. He has been at 50 for awhile now and I really enjoy playing him. I think you will find that it is a good combo and EA isn't nearly as bad as most will let you believe. I hope you enjoy the journey with yours as much as I did.
  24. Gruumch

    An Idea

I am pretty close to doing this already. I didn't set out to do it, but it just kind of happened.

    Mine are the following

    Stone/Stone
    EM/Elec
    Elec/Fire
    Fire/Dark
    DM/WP
    WM/EA
    DB/Invuln

That leaves Claws, BA, and SS for primary and SR, Shield for secondary still to do.
I broke with only playing each once when I made my SS/WP and I will probably at some point pair the last couple I have in some way. I also wouldn't call some of my characters the best matches but they were all fun.

I will probably replay some of the sets again. DA paired with Fire just didn't reach the level of performance I think Dark is capable of, so I will try it again with something else, and ELec Armor has changed so I can see playing through it again.
  25. Electric Armor starts out squishy, but picks up later on. Your best mitigation tools come later in both sets except for clobber, so be patient. I have an EM/Elec that I really enjoy playing because I can just laugh at Malta sappers and carnies in general. I like both WM and Elec so they should be fun together.
