Dependant on playstyle an Ill/Rad shouldnt have to worry about resists. I picked a shield myself the first time through thinking I would need protection for those times things snuck through. But to be honest, those times are rare, even solo. Between PA/spooky/phanty/deceive/blind not much is going to get at you. you can also take em pulse as a panic button since its a pretty decent pbaoe hold and you can combo it with flash to stop dead pretty much anything coming at you. Also combat jumping is definitely superior to grant invis as far as a lotg mule. You are going to want to be resistant to immobilization against arachnos and other pain in the neck mobs.

While everyone's playstyle is a little different even with the same powersets, the only time I have to even consider getting mezzed is when I choose to (for whatever reason) jump into the fight and drop flash or em pulse. While I have both of those powers on my Ill/rad as panic buttons, primarily between Perma PA, Spooky, Phanty, Blind, Deceive, etc I am staying well out of range. Couple that with a cardiac core boost for endurance/range boost I can stay even farther out of the fight. Indom Will sounds to me to be better on something that sticks closer to the combat, like a fire/kin or Plant. Unless you really like to mix it up, (like running in with choking cloud and using flash/em pulse etc, I really dont think you will need Indom Will and should IMO go with fire. On a Perma PA Ill/rad I was able to sneak in rise of the phoenix and with that much global recharge it is available whenever your need it. Like in my MoApex run where I was able to just pop right back up in fighting shape whenever i got stuck in an animation when the blue patches of doom caught me. (sigh that was a fun fight....)

I'm a big fan of the empowerment buffs on my Ill/Rad since I can get a cheap easy 20% global recharge buff for my PA that gives me breathing room in AV/GM soloing trips. Even if you are perma already having a little bit of cushion in exchange for some junk salvage you were going to toss onto WW or vendor anyway is never a bad thing.

I get a bit of grief from time to time when on my FF defender about the color of shields. At first I went with orange, since...well thats my fav color. But even when I go with the default colors people give me grief that it's distracting. Not as much with the shields but with dispersion bubble they seem to have a problem with it since it moves with me. My thing is, I need dispersion bubble to be visible so I know that it's covering the team. If I see they arent within the bubble i can move. Tho I have considered making the personal shields as invisible as possible. any recommendations?

I leveled a warshade according to dechs' guide and it went very smoothly. In addition to good suggestions on powers, he offers great advice on how to use them to best effect. Try it out for sure. Now that dark armor tank of his on the other hand....*shakes head*.... I'm just not convinced...
(despite that Khan TF we ran where you made Reichsman look like a weak kitten) -
Quote:ok. now that makes sense. see, how i read "skip to powers" when it should have been "skip two powers" and "mass one" as "increase density" instead of some other undisclosed power that has area of effect. So yeah, I'm sure plenty of builds skip repel (i know i do) and ID. ID is a good power if you have the room, but I agree that it is skippable if your build is tight. Now if you feel I was judging you, and that hurt your feelings. Then I apologize. My intention wasn't to hurt your feelings, but a reaction to based on my misreading what you typed. Also, the jokes about damage as mitigation was just that. A joke. Sometimes humor is lost in a forum setting and for that misunderstanding, I am sorry. Hope it didnt hurt your feelings. I think you have gotten all the input you need from your original post on the matter and hope you have a great weekend.in many guides people skip to powers which are repel and the mass one I forget what its called so to me the whole point of the kinetics set is sb and fuclom shift, and personally I do not find that fun.

one point in reply to the previous post. spiritual will be nice and all but also consider nerve. the accuracy boost will help out with the kin powers since kin buffs require hitting the mob to work
-
Utter high speed destruction of the enemy isn't mitigation? I mitigate damage by removing enemies (sorry, stole that line from my scrapper playing wife). But yeah, yer right, we dont "defend" in the classic sense. We amplify. Maybe we should get our our AT category, Lvl 50 Kin Amplifier...or Lvl 50 Kin Uberer....hmm...Uberer....I like it. Gotta ring to it.

I know that it's not in the works. And that it would be broken to add it. But what I am posting to you, my beloved troller community, is exactly "how" broken would it be to add dark miasma as a secondary to controllers? Not that it'd wouldnt be, but how bad would it be?
-
Agreed on busy. I have the same feeling, if I'm in for a relaxing session I'll pick dark/dark/dark instead since its about laying down sweet sweet blankets of comforting -acc. But if I just had a bad day at the office, or am jacked up on red bull, I crank up the headphones and bust out the kin for some crazy over the top action.

Quote:There are guides where someone takes a kinetics defender and doesnt take transfusion, transferance, increase density, siphon power, and siphon speed? These were defender guides? Really? And there are many of them?I think its more of the fact that kinetics is one dimensional as someone said above and no never made it into 30s with one, but here is part of the issue, ok you have recharge, slows, heals yea so what many defenders get heals, extra damage then super damage for your team, now the last one sounds awesome but in many guides people skip to powers which are repel and the mass one I forget what its called so to me the whole point of the kinetics set is sb and fuclom shift, and personally I do not find that fun.
I could possibly, sadly, believe controller builds without the above mentioned. But a kinetics defender who only takes 2 kin powers? What are they picking in these guides you read instead of their primary? Group fly?
Secondly, we get recharge, slows, and heals. Sure, just like many other defenders. Ok so we have an awesome aoe heal, a -damage that buffs at the same time, a -recharge that buffs recharge and speed at the same time (self only but that only means you are going to be doing more buffs sooner), a power that lets you (once you get a bit of practice in) cap damage for the team in one shot. Lets you not only offer endurance recovery with SB, but actually cap the endurance of everyone within range of the target mob. I'm not saying its the best defender, (that probly goes to cold/sonic most likely), but to call it shallow or lacking is just plain incorrect. If you dont want to play one, thats fine, plenty of ATs to try and find your fit. But if you take away anything from this thread, please come away realizing that a kin is a great benefit to you on your team. (especially if you are an ill/rad like you mentioned, since +recharge will only benefit you with PA). -
Quote:I....I....I agree....sooooo much (cept for the mean to je_saist thing cuz I like je_saist)This is just so wrong it hurts. Kinetics lives and thrives in melee. Get in there, damage cap yourself, make with the killing. If you spend most of your time outside melee range, you're as bad as bad can be. You got what? Two powers that can't affect you, one of which is easily emulated (and stackable!) via Sipohon Speed/Transference? Here's a little clue for you: ALL YOUR BEST BUFFS ARE AS MUCH FOR YOU AS THE REST OF THE TEAM
Hop in, damage cap yourself (and debuff the baddies), maintain your siphon speeds, belt out your heal between blasting the **** out of everything you see. Nuke away and transference your end bar back and laugh your yambag off. Kinetics is one of those sets that, when played right, can run ahead of the team and obliterate spawns on their own. Don't get the idea that you are a buffbot; that's for suckers and idiots. Kinetics makes everything better, including you, so don't squander your amazing abilities by hiding outside melee and acting like a spaz. If you're purposely avoiding getting your own buffs, you will hate kinetics and kinetics will hate you. A kin that doesn't blast is the worst of all possible kins, worse even than one that doesn't SB the tank every three seconds in case he feels lonely.
Please allow me to refer you to the only guide you need for kinetics. Note how it doesn't say "skip attack powers because you should never blast you damn buffbot"? Yeah. Try playing your kin as a murderous death machine that can also buff the team, you will probably like it a lot more. Kin is great on fenders because you can actually maintain serious damage output on yourself. Don't be terrible like je_saist wants you to be!
But the murderous carnage that is a kin...so much.
The Kin is the only defender I've had (and i have pretty much all of them at or near 50 cept for traps, sonic and cold) where I feel like I am a contributing factor to the death ball. I mean, defenders make teams into deathballs. That's what we do. However, in other sets, after you have made them awesome the deathball goes rolling without you. Sure you add a blast in there, your debuffs help things out quite a bit. But the Kin is the only defender I've made where after the ball is rolling, you are just as much a part of it as the rest of the team. It's like poking a bull with a stick and freaking it out, then instead of watching it rampage all over, jumping on its back and yelling "How ya like me now?". Case in point. Kin/elec/elec defender, run into melee with the scrappers/tanks/brutes Aim+fulcrum shift (ding! damage cap)+Ball Lightning+Short circuit+thunderous Blast+pop a blue and see if theres anything left alive to use transference on. You have done you job as a defender by buffing the team and also throw down stupid silly fun AoE death. -
Quote:Sorry for the mini rant there, posting while at work on a bad work day is not a good idea. You are missing most of the argument here. It's not that they don't do the damage of a scrapper/blaster and can't out tank a tank.
It's that they can't be enough of a tank for the not enough of a scrapper/blaster they can be.
They pay a bit too much for their versatility..
I see what you are saying. Maybe I'm just defensive about it because I truly enjoy playing my PB. Its a really fun toon to play, and I'm tired of the grief on pugs about why i dont play an optimized AT of some kind. Would I love to see my PB tank better? Or do more damage? Sure. One thing I'd love to see is my human form (I run triform) have more durability. The self heals are nice, but having to drop back into dwarf when the heat is on is really annoying. One thing I'm noticing is that people are referring to incomplete attack chains in nove and dwarf and that they need more attacks. Maybe it's my build (which by no means is optimal) but I always have an attack available in both forms. Even dwarf form as long as there isnt a -recharge buff hitting me. I never have to wait for an attack to recharge. I think a little more base resist in dwarf would be good, a build up option in nova would be awesome (that didnt rely on a proc), and a little more damage in human would round things out nicely. -
Maybe I'm missing it (a distinct possibility) but why does a toon have to be the best at something to be fun? So, the PB doesnt out damage a scrapper or blaster, it doesnt out tank a tank. Ok. So? It can't be fun? Maybe they should just delete the option of PBs altogether and make the only options for ATs be Elec/SD scrapper, Fire/MM blaster, Bots/Traps MM, Fire/Dark corruptor, Mind/fire Dom, Ill/Rad troller, Cold/sonic Defender, etc.
WEEEEEEE! Fun! -
I have several 50 defenders and my 50 Kin/elec/elec is a heavy contributer to the team. Especially at the end of the game where most people (hopefully) have set themselves up with solid personal defenses (even the squishies), you can focus less on team defense and more on improving the teams performance. A kin, in my opinion, doesnt necessarily protect the team, but make the team perform to its maximum potential. I cap your damage, I make sure you never run out of endurance, I make sure (at least the melee's anyway) that you never die with my gigantic heal that is available every 3 seconds (I got a ton of recharge). Speed boost is an awesome power. Fulcrum shift is an awesome power. Just because they are amazing doesnt make the toon one dimensional. For arguments sake lets take 2 powers away from other sets. Lets take away Deflection shield and insulation shield from forcefield and see how well that set performs, Heal other and fortitude from Emp, Rad infection and enervating field from rad, acid mortar and ffg from traps, etc. Without these powers, these sets would seem pretty shallow too. Sure, alot of sets get those powers early. I wont dispute that. But it's not that long of a wait to get to 32 to be able to bust out the steamroller.
-
I say, if it sounds fun to you, play it. A toon doesnt have to be the best in order to be fun. Look at all those MA scrappers. If we all were playing only the best of each AT we'd all be playing fire/rads, elec/SD scrappers, fire/mm blasters. cold/sonic defenders, bots/traps mm (shudder), etc etc etc. In a word Boring.
If you want to be a lightning chucking god of death, go for it. Just please dont make him look like Raiden from mortal kombat.... -
Used to have a race with a buddy of mine with the monster island mobs. see who could drop their target the fastest. he was a fire/rad tho and I just couldnt dish the same damage.

Quote:Wow. I hadnt thought of that as an additional challenge option! So, you would get an ouro arc. pop on the limitations, but then instead of doing the missions, go track down an GM and try it that way? I gotta try that at least once! I've been wondering if I could do it without my accolades. I mean, I know I dont need Geas, but without the atlas medallion and portal jockey and FP reserve in addition to no insp and temps? That'd be fun. My luck tho I'll run into one of the pansies like Eochai or the Kraken. But trying to take down Jack or Lusca while debuffed like that sounds like funHell, some ppl will even go through ouro to get rid of passive accolade bonuses to really get rid of all non-core (+pool) powers, but I never went that far (mostly cuz it's a PitA to set up, but truth be told, I'm not sure if I could have an infinitely sustaining attack chain w/o the likes of the Atlas Medallion).
Thanks for the suggestion! -

Quote:This always bothered me too. Why does the Hero epic not benefit the team when the Villain epic buffs everyone? Seems a little backwards. I can't think of a single time I was on redside where I didnt feel relief seeing a SoA on the team. I wish people had the same feeling when a Kheldian joined. There's also something that has always bothered me.
Kheldians *want* to be on teams so that they will get benifits from it (Cosmic Balance).
One way to make Kheldians more desired for teams would be if Cosmic Balance also gave some kind of bonus to the other members on the team.
That way, teams might really want Kheldians onboard. -
Great point Local. Personally, I don't feel that I am breaking my own rules by using Geas of the Kind Ones since it's a permanent power of mine. Like that completely usesless cryo pistol.....shudder....
Sweet. Yeah. That's how I'm gonna stick to it. Cuz yer right. It's a personal limitation I place on myself to see if I can do it. And if my personal limitation is that I cant use any ability that isnt permanently a part of my character, and that makes me feel like I accomplished something, then great. Thats how I have fun and I shouldnt let my wife give me grief for it. (Tho I've learned that's pretty much her reason for living, is giving grief)
So what kind of personal limitations do the rest of you place on yourselves to ramp up the challenge? -
I was thinking about something this morning and wanted some feedback on it. I really enjoy hunting GMs solo on my Ill/Rad. I have a personal rule of not popping inspirations during the fight or using temp pets. However, my wife ( a scrapper fanatic of all things...ugh) tried calling me out on using Geas of the Kind Ones during the fight. She also previously called me out on using the increased attack speed empowerment buff for hard targets like Lusca.
I guess my question to the AV/GM slaying troller community out there is, Do you think Geas and Empowerment buff counts as cheating? Im thinking maybe the empowerment buff might. But Geas? I mean it's one of my powers. Sure, its on a long recharge, but it doesnt go away magicly after 5 uses or whatever. Just wanted some feedback for the inevitable argument I will have with my wife over dinner when i get off work. (Gotta love marrying a gamer.)

so previously I had decided to go with cardiac for it. Assuming it would be of help when Soloing GMs. So I finally got a chance to test it out this morning. Sadly the only GM I could track down was Paladin in kings row. Still a GM however...sigh. Anyway, into my standard attack routine with my Ill/rad. I didnt change my pacing at all. pretty much a constant stream of blind/spec wounds/fireblast/fireball/lingering rad while running my rad toggles on him and keeping PA perma cast. normally I'll run a bit around 40 to 50% endurance during the fight and have to ease up from time to time after the PA casting in order for my endurance to catch up. I will generally refuse to pop blues when soloing as it is a personal challenge. (sometimes I'll cheat and use geas of the kind ones however, like against Lusca). Well aaaaanyhoo. I slotted the Cardiac Radial boost into my alpha slot and I think the worst my end got was about 80%. Not a major huge game breaking difference but one that made me very happy. I really cant wait to unlock the higher tiers so that I can start using EM Pulse as part of my routine (normally I dont since it gives me -recovery for a short time and i dont want to pop blues)
