  1. First I'm gonna see how this is received by the artists. If it's completely ignored, then that will be the sign I need to see that forums will return to how it has been. If a few artists post on this thread with their information then the next step would be to create a more formal thread displaying their information.

Pretty much I'm not going to hunt anyone down, I'm not a door-to-door salesperson. This is just an opportunity for our artist friends so they have a platform to bring business to them, only if they seek it. And like an opportunity, they can let it pass if they don't want it. Otherwise, we'll still have the Network to direct appreciators to artists both within and without the community.

Step #2 If this takes off...seems like the community needs a solution, and I'm offering one.
  3. Thanks for the welcome backs

I think it's alright keeping it separate. The individual thread comes with a nice neon sign pointing both veteran, new, and collectors-yet-to-be to our very own CoH celebrity artists

Does any of that require the non artists to give them extra consideration?

First off, I hope the thread doesn’t begin to draw lines between local artists, ‘outside’ artists, and appreciators. Once these lines are actively referenced, it can quickly lead some members of our community to develop stereotypical fallacies meant to include the majority of each ‘group.’ I’d hate for the several artist friends I’ve made to begin seeing me as an ungrateful vampire who sucks their creative juices for my own pleasure. Similarly, I wouldn’t want any of my appreciator friends to view artists as vending machines of art, where the transaction is as simple as dropping in some spare change. (Don’t worry, Caem and Suichiro, I’m not pointing you out as guilty, I’m just using your quotes to help build my case).

Since everyone is an individual, no assumption can apply across an entire population. There will be/are individuals who do fit into the fallacies I stated above, but I can pretty much guarantee they are a distinct minority in either group. Similarly, I can only speak for myself:

The art forums are definitely a community, but when does membership in this community begin and end? I have been a member of City of Heroes for four years, yet I didn’t register until some time afterward as I chose not to interact on the forums…but I have watched. I don’t think that may be called community membership, but I certainly have a greater knowledge of history here; I’ll assume it begins when you start interacting (so April). The main question is when does it end? Several artists on deviantArt have indeed played City of Heroes before, but have long since retired their heroes/villains. While those who have remained since their absence definitely would still consider them members of our community (at least I would hope we wouldn’t be so swift to exclude old friends), new members may have no knowledge of them…will the former members inevitably be excluded? If Juggertha and Alex hadn’t popped back in recently, would they have been considered ‘outside’ artists a year from now? What about the artists who have played the game and paid the fees…but never came to the forums? Are their experiences null? What about dA artists who read the forums, but aren’t subscribed? I know of at least one artist who does, but has never played the game because he is curious about his customer base. Wouldn’t he have a pretty good understanding of our community? After all, it is all based on text.
I do believe our local artists do need some special consideration (which is why I just created the Local Artist Pages). I believe many of the appreciators of these forums would use a thread dedicated to our community members as a first stop on their search for art before going elsewhere.

Keeping community in mind, I might also suggest not immediately declaring a sale if they’re in need of assistance due to a string of bad luck that has financially crippled them. Just sending out the emergency signal is sufficient enough for me to lend a hand, and I think others would as well. If some people have noticed the queues of LJ and John Printemps (externally, rhardo as well), then they’d notice I had purchased a significant portion of both their lines (10 from LJ, 15 from John). This could be interpreted in two ways:

1). I’m a savage art collector who rabidly assaulted both artists when they declared their sale because I’m a selfish individual who is severely addicted to collecting art for myself. And now they’re bound in my chains as I siphon away their time and energy.

2). I saw they needed help. As such, I offered as much assistance as I could spare to grant a significant portion of financial aid. In the process of this transaction, I made sure to inquire if they were absolutely sure they were ready for what I was purchasing, I was also concerned about how far they had lowered their prices and how large of a queue they had opened. Similarly with Foo, I told him we’d be willing to pay his standard fare without the sale. I let them know I wasn’t setting a deadline and I wanted them to take as long as they wanted, and if they needed a break to take it. I wasn’t going to disappear off the face of the Earth.

The answer is option 2 by the way. The reason I went into that story was because I wanted to assure our local artists our community isn’t here to take advantage of the fruits of their labours. For the most part, I believe we recognize you are indeed a human being (still confused about Foo), your time is as precious as ours, and most importantly…you possess a talent many of us could only dream of having a fraction of; we are forever grateful you had even decided to offer the fruit from your tree. (And for those concerned, the uber-load of commissions weren’t solely for myself…I don’t know what I’d do with that much Gray Huntress art at once)

As I said near the beginning, I can only speak for myself…but I am confident I am not the minority. Overall, I believe our community enjoys buying ‘local’ first; we may not always stay local…but we’re still going to be here for you when you need it. Heck, I’d buy LJ, Foo, Swanzy, and everyone else (I would love to list everyone but for the sake of space… ) art year round every week…but I’m sure they would get bored to tears drawing Gray Huntress over and over…and over again. Why? Because I love art, and everyone’s style has more than one quality that I love and willingly will return for more; but I also hope that what I have to offer (mostly my eternal gratitude, friendship, and money) will be something they can find useful.

Sorry for going on for so long…I’m just concerned. I wouldn’t want a rift to form between community artists and appreciators because suppositions were allowed to take hold and tear everyone apart. We are not separate…we are intertwined, moving amongst each other rather than standing along borders…like a pit of serpents…or an orgy.

  5. Yes. And provisions can be made for local artists to keep them separate from the 'outside' artists.
  6. I figure it would be a good idea to set up a thread outside of the Network to house links for our current community artists. Here are just some of the functions this thread could have:

    1. If you're a local artist and wouldn't mind being approached by local appreciators, then please let us know who you are and maybe link to your art page whether it's on dA or if you have a personal site.

    2. If you're in need of community support let us know; honestly, I believe there are enough selfless people in our community to aid you at your standard commission prices (heck, even raise them if you need assistance before lowering them); no sales/discounts required. Community support should go both ways.

    3. If you need to let the community know if you're opening or closing commissions, or if you only do art privately.

    4. Advertising here should only be for the local artists; it can function as a single stop for everyone.

    5. Of course there is more to do with this, be creative

Most importantly, I hope this helps bring attention to our local artists in their exclusive area. A place for potential clients to search locally first before going elsewhere. I'll even keep the OP updated to create a consolidated list.
  7. Ha! I love the Ninja Mastermind
  8. Eh, I hope I don't live to be 74 years old...but that empty space in the list looks awfully suspicious.

    Is it just me?

Really isn't that much privacy either, the American cousins can walk in at any moment and...wait, I'll show myself out.

But perhaps I'll comment on the new forums. Overall, it's a plus I guess; I think we know it was for the management's benefit, but I like having you guys around...you seem a lot more...comfortable? Warm? Level-headed (definitely). I don't know.

    The Gray Gallery

    Heya guys,

...wow, haven't updated this in a while, but that's beside the point.

Figured I'd go ahead and use this to just announce that my account is closing shortly, so this goes out to the friends I've made: You can still contact me via dA.

    *points to sig banner*

See ya later everyone. Play nice, or at least be civilized

P.S. Powerstream, I'll still be contacting you about your D.R.A.T. piece and I'll pull a favor with one of my friends to perhaps PM you when the commission is finished if they're willing.
  16. But what's the super fantastic prize?
  17. GrayHuntress

    City of Cute...

    *raises one eyebrow expertly*
  18. Ha, those sound like words being put in my mouth

Nope, just go at a comfortable pace for you and appreciate the talent people share with you
  19. Nice way to begin your collection. It can be very rewarding and also very taxing if you get carried away (though feel free to get carried away if you can shoulder it )*

Oooo, a CoH animated series *drools*...granted if it wasn't the Surviving Eight...sorta bored of that team.

*I do not condone wonton commissioning and it should be a process that is preferably taken slowly to savor each and every morsel you receive.

Alrighty, feelin' a little more awake, so here are the winners of the third Double Random Art Tossup!!!

And winner for Lucky Character is...

Powerstream's Crescent Blade to be paired with Jackalynn! You can post the acceptance speech later.

The winner for Lucky Artist is...

Happens chance smiled upon CelticBolt! (hehe, funny thing is this will be the fourth time I'll be requesting Jackalynn art from him...)

Well I don't know if I can say it was close...because it wasn't a race but a lottery, but still several characters presented inspired me with some great crossover ideas which I may need to save for a later date. And everyone loves crossovers because who wants to stand alone?

Again, congratulations Powerstream! (and if CelticBolt happens to read this I'll be talking with you)

Since I like to coordinate with my commissions, I'll be talking with you later Powerstream about composition ideas and such, so start brainstorming...but we won't talk until this evening at the earliest since I have somewhere to be. I'll send a PM or you can send me one if you want to throw some ideas at me while I'm away.

Rise and shine everybody, I hope everyone slept well if you did indeed sleep...if not I hope you enjoyed your night (or alternative time of day based on where you are on the globe). I'll be drawing the winners soon enough, but this is the official closing of the entries.

I'm not going to pull from the hat yet (granted I'm using a random number generator), since I feel grungy, and I don't like the taste of morning breath, and I look frumpy. But I will announce the chances.

There were a total of 25 entrants to be drawn for the character, which means you have a 4% chance of getting picked.

There are 8 artists in the hat, even though only two volunteered on the boards...this is because I went fishing on dA so it wouldn't be an easy win. However, in fairness, I did give Turkey Lurkey and Johnnykat a 25% chance each of winning, while the remaining artists I added split the remaining 50% (so they have an 8.3% chance each).

Just a reminder, it's not the 15th until I wake up so when I do, then I'll announce it's closed. Until then people can dive right in.
