  1. Hey, Issue 17 has some really keen stuff in it, so let's talk about it! WHEEEEEEE!

Please? Can we just discuss I17-related stuff and leave our personal opinions of certain posters, if we have any, out of this thread?
  2. SWEET SASSY MOLASSY! That's a lot of nice changes!
  3. The OpenGL flickering issue WAS fixed with the 9.12 hotfix drivers, but you don't need to download them because ATI incorporates hotfixes into future official releases. So if you already haven't, just download and install the 10.2 drivers (and Catalyst Control Center, as that's been updated as well)

Yep, that would be the best way to do it.

    2. Do I need to install these hotfixes mentioned in the thread?
No. ATI incorporates hotfix changes into future official driver releases. So all you need to do is download the 10.2 drivers and Catalyst Control Center software (they can be found bundled together on the Catalyst drivers page).

    3. Can I run bloom et cetera in the in-game settings and enable AA in the ATI drivers and have both work? As in, does the ATI driver setting override the ingame setting? Does this also apply for AF?
Until Ultra Mode, you cannot run Bloom AT ALL if you want AA and AF. Same for Depth of Field and Desaturation Effects, and you must set Water Quality to low. You must also disable AA and AF in-game and force them through the card. You do this by going into the 3D settings in Catalyst Control Center and unchecking the "use application settings" box for both AA and AF. Just set the levels of AA and AF you want via CCC and you're good to go. You may need to go back and re-enable application handling of AA and AF for other games; it's up to you.

    4. Do I still need to keep water effects Off if I want to use bloom and depth of field, or should I call the whole thing off and just turn off bloom/DoF altogether?
As said above, disable Bloom, DoF, and Desaturation Effects, and set water to low.

At any rate, I'm betting that the item pack is either $9.99 or $4.99. $9.99 seems like a good number, because that's the difference between just plain Going Rogue and the Complete Collection. (Okay, it's a penny off, sue me.) $4.99 seems like a good number, because it acknowledges that those who just wait and buy the Complete Collection are getting a free month (~$15) of play.

So if the upgrade pack is $9.99, you're basically paying $15 to get early access to Dual Pistols and Demon Summoning. If the upgrade pack ends up being $4.99, you're paying $10 to get early access to the additional powersets.

I know, some folks don't like the idea that it will cost extra to get early access to these things. If you're one of those folks, there is always the cheapest option: Wait until July, pay $40, and get ~$15's worth of play time with your purchase. You'll get everything for a discount net price of around $25. If it makes you feel better, I guarantee that your dual pistol or demon summoning whatever would have been thought of as just another flavor-of-the-month character. Of course, there's also the downside that your dual pistol or demon summoning whatever will be (presumably) forever barred from earning the 6th anniversary badge.

But the point is, what's more important to you? $10-$15, or having three to four months of extra play time with your dual pistols/demon summoning character? I'm not suggesting one way or another is better, it's just your personal preference.
Just gonna quote this, because I'm seeing far too many "BAWWWWW I can't have my cake and eat it too!" posts in here. So you can't have all your precious new shinies early and get a free month of play; big f'n deal. Life isn't fair.

As for me, considering that I've lived in the UK for a few years and my account is still North American, it's been a long time since I've been able to buy a retail version of ANY CoH product. The last actual retail box I bought was Good vs Evil. So y'know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna plunk down my money for the regular edition of GR so I can have fun with Dual Pistols and Demon Summoning early, then spring for the upgrade on launch day so I can have my shinies. And I'm not gonna complain about the fact that a free month wasn't added to my subscription -- between 30 days "free" playtime and in-game stuff that will be available for me until NCSoft shuts the game servers down for good, I'm picking the latter at this point.

But you know the biggest reason why I'm not going to complain about this? Because NCSoft is a business. Yes, they make video games, but they're still a business. And all things considered, they've been VERY good to us CoH players as far as not nickel-and-diming us for every little thing. Let's face it: we've had multiple free updates that other MMOs would have absolutely NO issue asking cash for. And in fact, NCSoft isn't really nickel-and-diming us here, either; it all comes down to how you want to spend your approximately X dollars/pounds/euros/whatever: get some goodies now with the option to buy the rest later on, or wait until all your goodies are bundled together and have an extra 30 days for showing some patience. Both ways are equally as valid as each other unless, again, you thought you'd get to have your cake and be able to eat it too. I freely admit that I originally intended to pre-order the Complete Edition when I still thought doing so was possible. My plans have changed, and now I'll just have to split up my payment. Or ... maybe not even buy the Complete Item pack if it turns out that I have no real interest in the extras, thereby saving money. But I'm not going to cry about it, I'm not going to try and petition NCSoft to change their marketing strategy, and I'm not going to accuse NCSoft of trying to squeeze every last cent out of me. I'm merely going to evaluate the available options and determine which one, if any, are best for my personal situation. Like an adult.

... And as far as wanting a retail box for future installs: why don't you just manually back up your files to disc? It's fairly straightforward, and that way you can actually have less to re-install than if you were to use the latest retail disc. *shrug* Just sayin'.

Sorry that went so long; it's 6:40 AM here, I'm sick as a dog with the Norovirus, and feeling very opinionated right now.

    And were you told why?

My account is current, contact info is up to date, only thing I can think of is I was gone for June up until the beginning of December, but I will hit 63 months this week.

    Thanks
Don't get too upset if you weren't invited to the Dual Pistols closed beta. It was a VERY fast beta designed to get the powerset tested before it will be made available early for those who pre-order Going Rogue.

As a 60+ month vet, you probably will get into the actual Going Rogue closed beta, which will be a longer and more intensive test process than the quick Dual Pistols closed beta.
  7. I'd just like to once again point out that Ultra Mode isn't just updated graphics. There were a lot of changes made under the hood in order to accommodate Ultra Mode, some of which will enable people who decide to use ATI graphics cards to finally run all of the games normal graphic features.

For a long time now, ATI users who play CoH have had to set their water quality to low, disable Depth of Field, disable Bloom, and disable Saturation Effects just so that Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic filtering will work AT ALL. Also, ATI users must completely disable AA and AF in-game and force their video cards to process those effects in order for them to work -- in addition to the other features they must turn off.

Barring a few possible old ATI cards, Ultra Mode will give ATI users the choice to enable or disable non-Ultra Mode features as they see fit, instead of needing to disable certain features and backdoor others just to have a game that looks halfway decent. If these players can make use of any or all of the new Ultra Mode features, that's just icing on the cake.
  8. Hey, just wondering if anyone's known the PlayNC store to do pre-orders for any of their releases. I want the pre-order stuff for Going Rogue, but seeing as I play on a North American account from the UK, pre-ordering the right version ain't as easy as just strolling down to my local game shop. I'm checking into both Steam and Direct2Drive as other possible options, and am curious if anyone has ever had luck with the PlayNC store.

Any insight (including into Steam or D2D) would be greatly appreciated.
  9. April?

    APRIL ... ?!

    WANT NAO!

And I guess those of us who can't pre-order Going Rogue will just have to make due with Dual Pistol or Demon Summoning characters solely on the Training Room during beta testing instead.

Believe me, if I could be using that setup to play MMOs without having to track down some random app, I probably already would be.

There's usually a Friends & Family phase during EVERY game's development. It's kinda like the transition between alpha and beta testing; the devs need a larger testing pool than just themselves, but aren't yet ready to invite total strangers to come help test their still-very-unfinished product. So yes, there will be a F&F phase for Going Rogue. In fact, Positron DID mention it at the end of the GR preview at HeroCon when talking about their tentative dates for GR's beta and release.

With regard to the other phases:

The various waves of testers (5-year vets, Loyalty program, pre-orders, and HeroCon attendees) were specified in an e-mail sent out last year advertising the Loyalty program. According to both it and the devs, 5-year vets will be the first invited to test once the F&F phase is over. I'm not sure where Hero-Con attendees will fit into the schedule.

    8. We don't know, but based on Posi's Hero-con comments about making sure players can't "double dip" accolades, it's probable.

    9. We don't know

    10. Good, because we probably don't know the answers to any of them, either.

  16. Yeah, I've got a few character ideas I'm sitting on until GR comes out.
  17. Sorry folks ... been feeling rough most of the night. Tried to hang in there in order to do this thing, but I gotta hit the sack. Have fun with those Carnies; I know I would've .

And what's this doing in this forum, anyways? Comics 'n other stuffs be a few forums down.

  20. But they never said that "survival of the fittest" in Praetoria is literal like it is on the Rogue Isles. Again, from what we've seen and heard, it's more like "John is responsible for X. Jim is working underneath John. Jim proves that he'd be more capable than John of being responsible for X. Therefore, Jim replaces John and John finds something else to do." Now, we don't know what "something else" entails for poor John. I know some - like you, for example - would probably like to think that John is killed or something because TYRANT IS AN EVIL MEANIEHEAD. But we don't know. It could be that John takes over Jim's old position (provided that the person below Jim isn't capable of doing a better job of it than John) and that it really is just advancement via better performance with all the usual B.S. stripped away. Or maybe you're right, and Jim plants inflammatory anti-Cole propaganda documents in John's computer and gets John taken away by the authorities. We just don't know.

Remember way back in the day when this thread got started and everyone was like “WOW those are great resistance costume pieces, I can’t wait to wear them, splat, splat, splat,” and “Oh super keen, first I changed my desktop to a lolz cat and now my crippling depression doesn’t seem so bad anymore, because I have a reason to live again, I get to wear glowing stuff.” Well, get out a mop and find something sharp. That picture is of a NPC, not a new costume set.

Me so sorry about that there wasn’t a clearer explanation of what was going on in the screenshot, I really am. But when you get down it and think about this rationally, this is really your fault, you jumped to a conclusion. You know I told you a thousand times not to do that, but I guess I need to teach you another lesson in the silence of the basement, next to the treadmill you don’t use anymore. Looks like you and I won’t be going over to your mothers for dinner like you planned. Canceled! The writing is on the wall baby, you are going to just have to tell the neighbors how clumsy you are, and just deal with it. Let the guilt of your wrong doings lead you on a path to righteousness. You’re welcome.

See how I turned that around, take a note kids.
Well, Jay, thanks for clearing that up at least. I guess we can all now ... wait, what?
