Absolutely LOVE how people assume Positron was the evil mastermind solely keeping us from having merged markets. I don't think Paragon Studios is a dictatorship, and WW's promotion doesn't enable her to do whatever she wants to the game. With mention in the other thread about Information (Praetorian currency, I guess), it probably came down to making the decision to either support 3 separate systems of currency and 3 separate auction houses, or just combine and simplify down to 1 currency and auction house.

Protip: The devs said that there were certain tiers of players that were eligible for the GR beta, but they never said WHEN those tiers would be invited or even if they're separating beta entrance by those tiers. Also, there's no set amount of time by which the devs must let another tester group into beta. The beta will progress as it needs to progress, and sometimes things take longer than the developers expect

Finally, IBTL. We do NOT need any more of these threads.

If I may nitpick, even Marvel doesn't classify them as Mutants. Cases like the Fantastic Four or Spider-Man, who all gained abilities as a result of their molecular structures being mutated by outside sources, are considered Mutates. Still human, but with post-natal altered genetics. Mutants, on the other hand, are not just born with various abilities, but actually born with a specific gene absent in non-Mutants. It's gotten to the point in the Marvel universe where Mutants are considered by many to be their own separate species. They're feared, hated, persecuted, and discriminated against because they're genetically not H.omo Sapiens. The Fantastic Four, on the other hand, don't have to deal with much of that partially due to the fact that they've made it clear that they were human before going into space, and that any other humans exposed to the same conditions as they would also have super powers.

TL;DR version: Even Marvel says that the Fantastic Four would be of a Science origin in CoH terms.

Now, you wanna talk about a convoluted origin? My Crab Spider started out as a low-ranking Freakshow member who joined Arachnos, underwent strenuous physical and mental training to become a Wolf Spider, was subjected to various scientific experiments and alterations in order to become a Crab Spider, then gradually replaced most of his organic body with advanced cybernetics and robotics. PLUS, he also makes use of a few magical artifacts!
  4. Throwing my two cents in here:

My level 50 Crab is soft-capped for ranged Defense, with all other damage and position types having Defense amounts of around either 20% or 30%. It's taken a lot of time, effort, and infamy to get there. And yet, I make it a point to activate Serum whenever I can and make liberal use of Wide Area Web Grenade to keep enemies at range. Why? Because it does NOT take much for enemies to start a Defense cascade and absolutely shred me if they can get in close, Damage Resistance be damned. If that character really were a Tank Mage, I wouldn't have to stay on my toes and be as active as I am about keeping enemies away from me; I'd be able to take care of them with little worry regardless of their position relative to me. That's a BIG decider about whether or not some class is truly a Tank Mage: every class in every MMO has certain circumstances under which they're exceedingly hard to beat (via defenses, control, overwhelming damage, or any combination thereof), but Tank Mages are almost always exceedingly hard to beat.

Also, note that I haven't even mentioned exemplaring. With only one purple set slotted, most of that character's set bonuses will cease to function at certain levels. Tank Mage? Far from it.
  5. Objective Feedback: From what I've seen so far, the buffs granted are large enough to make a slight difference, yet small enough to be nowhere near overpowering. Furthermore, the effects of the mutations are such that this is not a "must-have" power that will separate the Haves from the Have-Nots. I've yet to come across any mutations that might benefit my enemies more, as per the warning.

    Subjective Feedback:
I've used the power on like 6 or 7 characters now, and I always get either Tough Hide, Quick Reflexes, or Acute Senses. Are there any other effects?

The particle effect replays on tough hide, but not the actual physical character animation. At least, not on the character of mine with that particular mutation. That's probably working as intended.
  7. Acute Senses perception bonus not showing up in Combat Attributes

Operating System (Vista, XP, OS X version): Win7
    User Client (Mac/PC/Linux): PC
    Server: Training Room
    Character name: Goliath Bird Eater
    Time: 7:40 PM EST

    Bug Description:

In checking to see if the Acute Senses bonuses appear to work, I checked out my Combat Attributes. They all showed up except for the perception bonus. Either the bonus is not working or it is just not showing up in the Attributes window; I'm not sure which.
  8. Acute Senses activation animation replays every few seconds

Operating System (Vista, XP, OS X version): Win7
    User Client (Mac/PC/Linux): PC
    Server: Training room
    Character name: Goliath Bird Eater
    Time: 7:35 PM EST

    Bug Description:

I activated the Secondary Mutation power and received the "Acute Senses" ability. Since receiving it, the activation animation (leaning back, arms straighten, blue particle effect around head) keeps replaying every 5 or so seconds.

Edit: the animation replays on the Huge character with the buff, but not a Male character with he buff. The blue particle effect does loop every 5 or so seconds on the Male character, but not the actual physical character animation.

  10. One thing I've wanted since alternate animations were announced was a headbutt animation for Cobra Strike from Martial Arts. The current alternate animation, an uppercut, looks fine and all, but it's not really well-suited for an attack that is primarily used to stun enemies. An uppercut is, after all, a "power" punch. A headbutt would work much better with the power thematically, and could really be interchangeable between the two styles of animations.

Also, I'd like to see a couple of unique animations work their way into some of the older sets. Blasts in particular, where there's like a handful of animations that get used over and over again across the sets. I don't want every set completely redone, just something here and there to give each set some flare and individuality. Y'know?

Finally, something that was informally discussed with BABs during the Issue 15 closed beta: a costume change emote for Villain Epics. He seemed interested in the idea (in fact, he may have been the one to initiate the conversation about it), but with everything that has followed, it's entirely likely it either fell off his radar or got pushed WAY onto the back burner.

Hrm ... that's what I was afraid of.

A lot of the graphical coding work to fix the old ATI problems and enable use of Ultra Mode was done before the 5xxx series cards were released -- the HeroCon Praetoria demo was run on 2 crossfired 4970s, if I remember the specific model correctly. The 5xxx series of cards have a different architecture and handle AA differently than the 4xxx series, and this likely explains why some of the most powerful GPUs on the market suddenly can't smooth out jagged lines in our 6-year-old game.

Guess I should officially bug it and PM an appropriate developer.

    5770 Brand?

Expanding upon what Saist said, XFX cards also come with a lifetime warranty. That's definitely something to consider. For what it's worth, I use a Sapphire 5850, and have had absolutely no problems whatsoever.

My only issue was the i was supposed to get 8 gigs with an ati 5450 but instead dell sent me a 6 gig ati 4200.
Good to hear that the problem's resolved. Now go pester Dell for that other 2 gigs of RAM. If you've got it listed on the invoice or their website, they can't weasel their way out.
  15. Hey, I need some help testing something.

Ive noticed that on my 5850, anti-aliasing doesn't work at all at the character creation/character select/tailor interface. I've tried rolling back to the 10.4 Catalysts, but the problem remains.

I need people running something other than a 5xxx series card to see if they have anti-aliasing at those screens, and to report back. Be sure to list your card(s) and the drivers you're using.

    Thanks.

Not to sound rude, but that's an awfully vague question. Any number of things could be causing your PC to restart when playing CoH. Let's start by getting some basic information:

Are you playing on a desktop or laptop?
    What's your Operating System?
    What's your CPU?
How much RAM do you have?
    What's your video card?
What drivers are you using with your video card?
Did you have problems before switching to ATI?
Did you have problems prior to Issue 17?

That should provide a decent starting place.
  17. I like seeing how far I can go through the Shadow Shard using only the gravity geysers and/or Super Jump without falling. If a characters does have Super Jump, I'll try to use the geysers as little as possible.
  18. As mentioned in my previous post:

    10.5 Catalysts have been released!

As I've already said, no FSAA/AO fix yet, but everything seems fine aside from that. Maybe we'll get something nice in a 10.5 hotfix driver. I prefer to be cautiously optimistic; DOOOOOOOM is bad for your complexion!

Edit: After putting the drivers through their paces a bit, I must admit that this particular set is a bit underwhelming. Performance increases were minimal at best, and I even lost FPS in a few games. On the plus side, ATI is slowly but surely fixing a lot of compatibility issues with various hardware configurations, and I think that the OpenGL 4.0 drivers have been incorporated into standard drivers with this release. I need to get confirmation of that, though.

So, while you should ideally always keep your drivers updated, there's no real rush to install the 10.5s unless you have a problem elsewhere that they fix.

Now, I'm not trying to lay everything at Paragon's feet, not trying to start a "Devs hate ATi!" to replace "Devs hate villains!" here. I'm sure adjustments could be made in the drivers to allow for what PS did. I'm likewise as sure adjustments could have been made to the AO code to make it work within the current drivers.

However, what I will say is that it never should have gotten to this point. Between them they should have worked the kinks out before it was even released, and it *really* better be ironed out before Going Rogue is on the shelves, bragging about Ultra Mode. The new box will no doubt attract some new players, how long do you think they'll be around if the shiny new graphics touted on said box only half work for a good number of them?
The developers, programmers, and engineers at PS have done a whole hell of a lot to get as many people's systems running properly as possible with the various graphics updates and fixes that were included in Issue 17. But the reality is that there's only so much they can do with regard to hardware. Unfortunately, those of us who use ATI cards are stuck in the middle of what happens when a development house has done all they can and must request that the hardware manufacturer try something. All during the I17 closed and open beta, I was in regular contact with The Television, discussing the various problems ATI users still experienced. Paragon was able to hammer out the majority, with two notable exceptions: a bug where those using Catalyst 10.2 or 10.3 drivers would experience massive, rapid framerate loss and RAM consumption (which quickly led to client crash) when they tried to change the quality of the shadow map shader; and graphical artifacting that occurred whenever FSAA and AO were used in conjunction with each other. Those two particular issues had to be forwarded to AMD/ATI for investigation.

When the 10.4 Catalyst drivers were released, the shadow map shader bug had been fixed. That only leaves the FSAA/AO conflict to be resolved, if possible. The 10.5 Catalysts were released a few hours ago at most, and as you can likely tell from my previous sentence, they do not include a fix for the FSAA/AO conflict. This is not Paragon Studios' fault! This isn't a game-crashing bug, so it probably isn't high priority for AMD. Also, remember that AMD typically releases hotfix drivers to cover changes that weren't able to be included in the WHQL driver release. Finally, and most annoyingly, CoH is NOT the only game that's had issues with FSAA, AF, and/or AO when being run on the 5xxx series of cards. While it's a powerful series, there ARE some design flaws that have had to be ironed out since the series was introduced.

Long story short: Yeah, it sucks about FSAA and AO not working well together. But at this point, it's not up to paragon Studios to try and come up with a fix. They've done all they can do. It's not their fault that one series of ATI card has difficulties rendering both FSAA and AO.

Oh, and just as a point of reference: the Hero-con Praetoria/Ultra Mode demo that included FSAA and AO was run on two Crossfired 4xxx cards (the specific models escape me right now), before the 5xxx series was even released.

Depends on what you're talking about when you say "mistake".

If you mean the fact that the mitos on the LGTF had a 50 mez protection, well, I could kinda agree. But Castle probably wasn't thinking of the LGTF encounter design when he fixed the problem of them perma-holding themselves. He just saw that something wasn't working as it should, and corrected it. And he has since reduced their mez protection to a level much more in line with the capabilities of a single team.

Now, if you're talking about him making it so they're no longer perma-held, then I'd respectfully disagree. A bug is a bug, and bugs need to be fixed. But since this particular bug had been indirectly aiding players for who-knows how long, folks got in an uproar after it was fixed. That's trying to have it both ways, in my humble opinion. To not fix (or revert) a bug which breaks intended design and gives players an advantage is tantamount to giving players permission to use exploits to cheat the system. So in that sense, Castle did not make a mistake.

Edit: While I'm quoting you, Flea, I'm actually using "you" more in the general sense. I'm not really singling you out, but your post gave me a jumping off point.

  23. Late to the party, as usual.

    I totally high-fived Dean; he's a broseph and a proven ally.

As for my last(?) clone? I exterminated with extreme prejudice. When I still had my lab's resources, clones of myself running around weren't an issue because I could always get my team of scientists install some sort of failsafe mechanism into future generations to ensure that they'd be loyal to me. With the lab gone, any existing clones would have free will ... they could do anything, from saving kittens to exterminating the Jews (yeah, i went there ). They could seriously screw up my PR! So no way, there's only room in this world for one Goliath Bird Eater.
