Quote:Not if NCSoft simply sold the game to another publisher - and there's an interesting new rumor about that:Not trying to be a pessimist but....
Won't any "future" version of CoH be MONTHS away??? I'm not a huge techy person, but it seems to me that if/when the servers shut down - trying to rebuild everything is going to take lots of time? yes? no?
Don't get me wrong...I LOVE CoH and all of my friends here, but is saving CoH going to also mean a huge amount of time between Nove 30th and a restart? Or is a simple reboot to new server/servers something that can be done quickly if all things fall into place?

I don't think that they'd have to relocate to the SOE head office - they had their own studio when they were owned by NCSoft, so there's no reason why SOE wouldn't keep the same set up.
-
I don't see why they'd even do that - I'm pretty sure that the salaries paid by NCSOft weren't so staggeringly ginomous that SOE couldn't match them, and I don't see why they not hire the people who knew how the game worked inside out rather than pay to train a whole new team to learn about it - plus, the dev-player relationship in CoH is one of its selling points.
-
Also, if we want to daydream a little, this is from the Wikipedia page about the 3rd EQ1 expansion:
Quote:"The Shadows of Luclin also incorporated a new game engine, new character models, and gave players the ability to design graphical user interfaces. The player characters' appearance was completely redesigned giving them more layers and rounder shapes" -

Quote:With 1999's original Everquest still going and getting game updates, I'm not sure how low SOE really sets their profit requirements for older games.someone who doesn't shut it down because it's not making enough money.
And CoH isn't some new game they've invested millions in only to be let down when it doesn't match WoW's numbers - anyone who buys CoH knows exactly what they're getting - a polished, stable, well-loved MMO classic that's been consitently profitable over the years, with its own unique space in the MMO marketplace, one of the most dedicated and passionate player bases of any type of game, and a well-established hybrid subscription model. -
-
That wouldnät really be a long-term soluntion - we'd know - and they'd know that we knew - that they didn't want us - it'd be a pretty tense and cold atmosphere between them and us, and I'm not sure that many of the devs would be willing to just go back to work after the way that they've been treated.

Who might not be too happy about SOE suddenly acquring the leading superhero MMO title to go with DCUO, especially as CoH would very likely be tied into the Station Pass, giving it extra openign for revenue and player increases.
The 3-way superhero MMO publisher fight would be down to a straight 1v1, with Perfect World suddenly and massivlely outgunned by SOE. -
-
This does make the rumored offer a little weird - however, DCUO is pretty much a console game with a PC port as an after thought - they could be looking at having 2 separate superhero games targeted at 2 different markets, and 2 differnt play styles - one a console based acton focus beat-'em-up, the other a "classic" PC MMO.
Also, with EQ 1 and 2 boith going, and SWG shut down only becasue LucasArts decided not to renew the license to let the Tortanic sail the SW MMO sea by itself, there might even be the possibility of greater security in the SOE stable than the NCSoft one.
Plus, the Station Pass raises some interesting revenue and player increase possibilities. -
Are the people who made the NGE decision still at SOE? If they've moved on, you could choose to think that the company had changed, and offer them a 2nd chance.

Quote:He might also count against us in any attempt to talk NCSoft into selling up.Someone should contact Richard Garriott (creator of Ultima). He has an "interesting" relationship with NCSoft, and is a game designer. More specifically, he sued NCSoft after they terminated him (claiming he left voluntarily), which caused his stocks to expire, costing him millions. He won the lawsuit, worth about $32 million.
Garriott is probably more known by his altar egos, Lord British in Ultima and General British in Tabula Rasa. He founded the game design company Portalarium, and is currently working on the spiritual successor to Ultima (perhaps even Ultima 2 if he gets the IP).
Getting him to help would be a long shot, but all we have is long shots. Given his past history with NCSoft, he may have some sympathy for us, even if we don't get taken under the wings of his game company. -

Quote:It's still the Labor Day Weekend - we're unlikely to get any response until Tuesday at the earliest.Has anyone gotten a response yet? I've been watching this thread. I need to send my own message to VALVe but I've been working on the other efforts, heh. Keep us updated, and thanks for everyone who started and worked with this idea
(I love VALVe so much...I really hope for the best from them ;_ -
Quote:By the way, if you're aware of any attmept by the devs to mount some kind of studio/game buy-out, please let them know that the Titan Network and thousands of players are ready to fund it to the best of their abilities.Cold dead hands, etc.
We'll all be with you guys til the end, and then some.
You've always stuck with us through thick and thin, and we're going to do the same for you if you need us. -
A rescue attempt is being organized over on the Titan Network forums - it's still in the early stages.
-
And if NCSoft won't play ball on CoH1, then we're going to do everything we can to get CoH2 done, even if it needs a different IP - it'll still be made with the same spirit behind it.
-
-
Ideas for the future Incarnate slots might be repurposed by other NCSoft studios - the mystery secret project could re handed over to another studio, and so on - even planned stuff from the CoH IP could be transferred to another IP.

There are several options available, but right now, the focus is on getting NCSoft to release the IP and the server code to allow us to continue the current game.
If we're only able to get the IP, but not the engine, then an attempt would be made to rebuild the game in a new engine.
If we don't even get the IP, then an attempt would be made to set up a player funded and run superhero MMO that would follow the same design goals and spirt as CoH, and with a new IP that was as close to the CoH IP as possible without attracting any lawyers.
What ever option we end up with, there's a huge wish among the players for as many of the Paragon Studios dev team as possible to be involved - they gave it everything while they worked on the game, so now we're going to give it everything we've got to save it and them in some form.
