1. I'm just hoping that my system -- which was pretty good when I built it 18 months ago -- will be up to the task. I've got an Nvidia GTX 295 running with an Intel Core2 Extreme at 3.0Ghz. The weak point is that it's 32-bit so I'm capped at 4GB RAM.

I have been told the GTX 295 is really two cards on one board. If that's the case, how will that be affected by the currently inability of Ultra Mode to work with SLI configs? Is the 295 SLI on a board, or wired together some other way?
2. So I'd been playing for a couple of hours and was getting ready to log. Heading through the RWZ portal to PI I notice it taking a very long time to zone. Sure enough, after a couple of minutes I get a crash. The strange thing is that instead of the usual single pop-up with a big box to explain what you were doing, I get this:

[image]http://kavenawe.com/CoH-error.png[/image]

The "Copy to Clipboard" text follows.

Code:[/color]

Assertion failed

Program: C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe
Time: Sun Jun 21 07:30:07 PM

Error Message: CRT abort() called

ERROR: swDumpStackToBuffer - timeout (258) waiting for dumpHeap is NOT corrupted
Last windows SYSTEM error: Not enough storage is available to process this command.

To which I say: Didn't the CoH beta end a looooong time ago? I wasn't on Test, either.

Weirdness.

Edit: Oh yeah, no images. Well, it should work as a URL< anyway. http://kavenawe.com/CoH-error.png
3. I added this to my file, but the file itself has been customized all to heck. You can just uncomment the sections you don't have.

So if CO does come out, and it has customization, before CoH has retrofitted some sort of customization's...

This is my only MMO, so can someone with more history in the industry confirm that player loyalty is a myth?

On topic, thanks, BAB, for this excellent post. I wish I could get programmers on my team willing to document a process this thoroughly. I'm lucky if I get stored procedures with descriptive names out of them!

Ok, admit it, who went out and spent the $10 as soon as they got the email?

I know I did... >.>

Guilty.

[/ QUOTE ]

I do think that $10 is pushing it for four emotes and a handful of nebulously described costume parts. Since I have a couple of old school magicians, though, I'm hoping that the tux looks different enough from the existing model to be worth it.

It is a bit ironic that I won't be able to participate in the event itself, since I actually have someone with whom I'll be spending Valentine's Day (don't look so surprised, blast you!). Maybe it is a special gift to those gaming couples that were interviewed last year.

Doesn't this imply an overhaul of the enhancement system? Or will this be separate?

Meaning if I'm about to slot an enhancement, will I see current value and future value on mouseover with an enhancement?

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't want to talk too much out of turn, so I will just say that its obvious that the real-time display Lighthouse refers to has to be something that is viewable within the normal game display, or else it would be worthless as a real-time display showing things like combat buffs. So by definition, its totally separate from how they would alter the enhancement/respecification screens, which shows powers and slotting in a completely different view.

[/ QUOTE ]
My assumption is that it will be a new UI window showing statistics. That is easy to turn off for people who don't want to see it, and could just pull the numbers out of the stream for display. Other numbers added to the UI would probably be tooltip/properties/info windows. This would allow reuse of existing interface resources, reducing the workload for the coders.

Yes, I did reboot, still same problem. I must be the only one having this problem, still getting the "cant connect to DBserver" error. I am able to sign on and get to the server selection page, but click on any server and get that error after about a 20 second hang.

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually, I got the same thing for several attempts. Waited a half hour, tried again, and everything was copacetic.
9. The lag was pretty bad last night, but since I have never done a Hami raid I don't have anything to which to compare. It is a little weird hitting buttons and then waiting to see if the power ever activates.

But that'll change after the first couple of days, and it's the only complaint I had. I appreciate that many of the issues brought up in closed and open beta were addressed -- and that we were given explanations for the issues that were not addressed -- and the game play is much, much smoother than it was originally. (I survived getting blasted by the drop ships, yeah!) The content is great, the effects are amazing, and the game is feeling more like a superhero game, not a generic fantasy game with superpowers bolted on. I hope there will be more along this line in future expansions.

Nice job!

I used to get together with some friends once a week at a local Chili's to discuss our results/plans for the turn of Middle Earth Play by Mail wargame we were on.

[/ QUOTE ]

That brings back memories, in particular a 3am Denny's conversation about the Illuminati PBM game. Ah, nothing quite like the growing look of terror on your tired college-aged waitress's face as you calmly discuss the current security levels of the Federal Reserve, the success of the efforts of the Fifth Internationale to infiltrate the Boy Scouts, and whether or not you have sufficient cash on hand to launch an attack to destroy the NSA.

All over root beer and Britishburgers.

Damn, I miss that game. I should think about playing it again.

I agree. It'll only take, what, six months to write the flashback system if they devote all their resources to it? I'm sure everyone is willing to wait until the fall for Inventions to go live.

There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of a Trip Mine binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon.

[/ QUOTE ]

This thread has made me laugh, and laugh hard. I have a low level villain on Pinnacle I named Doc Gonzo as a tribute, although he's really more like a cross between HST and Yage-era WSB. I got the Foster Grants and combover, though!
15. [ QUOTE ]
Were you in Founders with the Crey (and Hellions) or another zone? It might be zone specific (or at least be mobs that normally appear in those zones).

[/ QUOTE ]

I think it was Steel Canyon (but I always get it mixed up with Skyway City -- damned initials!). I think it is based off the normal spawns for the zone.
16. [ QUOTE ]
Anyone else getting random other factions?

[/ QUOTE ]

I had Hellions in mine.
17. Most of my comments reflect things others have already said.

* I was playing Brass Goblin, a 18 sonics/ice corrupter. The mission was a bank job in SC.
* The bonuses look random, even if they aren't. I just started blasting as much stuff as possible, but couldn't make out a pattern. It seems as though you get credit for NPC villains, but I can't be certain. A better explanation would be helpful.
* Having "fog of war" in the bank/PPD is reasonable, but it is frustrating not having the entrance/exit door marked.
* I defeated an awful lot of enemies, and received few Inspirations. Given how tough (and long) the battles are, it might make sense to increase the distribution rate.
* Breaking out of jail only to face down guards while your End is wiped out from breaking the door isn't fun. Especially the third time you have to do it in a single mission.
* Bowling citizens with Shockwave is too cool for words. Smacking a bunch of them into a storefront and showering them with change from the parking meters is even better.
* Overall the mayhem mission was brilliant. I cannot wait to run another.

Just wondering...

"miami's Bloody Mary"

Whats that about? Never heard of it...

Ah, I love this story! It is truly, truly creepy. My hat's off to the writer for the reference.
20. [ QUOTE ]
I still can't believe he used the word crying.

The man need a PR person.

[/ QUOTE ]

Weird. Until I saw these responses I assumed he meant crying as in "crying out," or beseeching, not as in "sobbing like little babies." Perhaps he does need a PR person, to help him keep his vocabulary down at an appropriate level for the forums.
21. [ QUOTE ]
Lets face it. This game had very little area to begin with. Most people were out of KR the first day. Within a week they were in Talos. A month later they were out of Bricks.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm sure I'm not typical, and maybe not even the target demographic of the designers, but I've been playing since beta and still don't have a character to 20th level. I've never been to Bricks, and was only in Talos once during an unfortunate incident involving getting off the train at the wrong stop. And yet I'm paying my $15 a month and loving the hell out of this game.

I'm obviously not a powergamer. I don't spend 18-24 hours at a stretch playing games -- I probably don't spend more than that in a week. I think it's great that Cryptic is balancing the issues so that there's some new things for each level range, from the beginning to the max. Even when my characters can't take advantage of the tailor, and aren't ready to go for a cape, it adds to the world to see others with these things.

There's exactly zero chance I'll get anyone to 50 by year's end, but it will be cool to see all you uber-types sporting glowy Kheldian eyes and whatnot when you're dancing around the statue of Atlas. That's why I love this game -- it changes around you, even if you don't make it your religion.
