  1. And Grandville is like the Crysis of Cox zones
  2. Itsactually the same with Merit/Candy cane vendors as well
  3. I have had that problem with websites/forums in general, although not all the time.

For me (running opera/chrome/firefox/IE) it appears to be one browser tab taking forever and delaying everything to do with that site. When i close the offending tab (normally the 1st one that was trying to load) the rest just zip along, so it could well be an offending image file that is screwing it up.

Note: The forums logging you out is a board issue in general... although i find that using lastpass set to auto-login DOES help ease the issue.
  4. If you run Microsoft Security, then make sure you put it CoX into the excluded section
  5. No problems over here... could well be an issue with the ISP over on your end (posting from the UK whilst maxing out the bandwidth downloading from steam)

Actually, no it doesnt say "badly designed" out of the box, because you CANNOT balance the encounter perfectly, unless there is a method of taking into consideration every possible combination of powersets (primary and seconday) AND also individual power choices.

In some cases, there might be a case of "if the player took THIS power from their powerset" but didnt (ie a possible "obvious choice") then it can make the job a lot easier.

Case in point: Build Up/Aim are generally considered "must have" powers for blasters, but if you DONT take it, it can make your life more difficult. You can still play the game normally, but that *some* situations your life would be easier if you had taken it.

Without taking into consideration peoples builds, it can be hard as to WHY they are failling... and unless you individually tailor to the player(s) (might as well be two, cos two badly build empath defenders aint going to do much against Trapdoor necessarily), there will ALWAYS be cases of people failing to solo/duo around... no matter how long they have played the game.

Case in point: I tried the Honeree/the other guy... i FAILED badly trying to solo it, I had ONE friend show up, we cakewalked it... but my friend had issues trying to solo it also... Make of that what you will, especially considering that we also reset the mission when my friend joined up with me.
  7. QR: Strange, my Controller who has feck and all defence/resists seems to do pretty well by themselves for the large part of it...

Why shouldn't development also take the form of a timesink? Giving players what they want seems secondary to making them wait (and continue paying while they wait) for what they want.
    .
Ok, so *what* exactly do players want? Remember, you have to please everyone...

Oh, and you have to keep it coming out at a fair rate of knots as well. ANY MMO playerbase will always consume pretty much ALL the content for your game before you release the next one. Unless of course you make the content so difficult that only 0.001% of your player base will complete it before you release your next set of content.

Come on Johnny, I am calling you out on this.

If you cannot please me with your list of what you would like in the game, then I personally thing that you are talking out your rear end.

And once you have done that list, come up with a new one for what you would like to release afterwards...

    And then do this again.

Welcome to the world of MMO development.

You will NEVER please everyone 100% of the time, so you dont even try to. What you *aim* to do, is please most of the player. If people come up and complain, then you try to notice what people say.

Oh, and if you say that the forums are where to pay attention for the majority of the playerbase... total lie. Only 5-10% of the TOTAL playerbase ever post on the forums just once[1].

And yes, i know that Paragon Studios have made some mistakes in the past, but they do seem to be moving it along... for a LONG time we have asked for "end game" content... and now that we recieve it... you just throw it back and say "DO NOT WANT LIKE THIS"

[1] Figure not pulled out of my ***, obtained from various CM people that i know...
  9. If you are running Microsofts Security suite (whatever its called), go into settings and put the CoX folder into the exclusions section. I did this and it stopped my copy of CoX from lagging/crashing out when it got all busy.
  10. 1st 50...
    David Pryons: Fire/Emp controller

    732 hours....

Note: Around this time, i was hearing people say that they could get some scrappers to 50 in around 100 hours play time....

    Ten Commandments of MMO Gaming

    1) You Shall Have No Other Gods Before Me -- there's nothing more annoying than someone in zonewide chat who can't shut up about how XGame is better than YGame (the game you're currently playing). For me, it always leads me to ask myself... why aren't they playing XGame, if it's so amazing?
Agreed... even though there is an ignore facility, it is still generally annoying to see it happen

    Quote:
    2) You Shall Not Make (For) Yourself An Idol -- When doing pick-up groups, I find there's usually one guy who can't stop talking about how you're playing your class wrong, and if you'd play it HIS way (the RIGHT way), you'd all be cleaning up and killing the enemy at least 80% faster than you are now.
Agreed.. although it *is* nice when the player actually explains it in a nice fashion, instead of being all draconian. Granted it could also just be a clash of playstyles... and any decent player *should* be able to adapt to the changes of others (my main swaps between healer/control/damage according ot the situation.. i have seen people with similar builds to mine just do one thing ALL the time...again just a difference in playstyles here)

    Quote:
    3) Do Not Take The Name Of The Lord In Vain -- Which could also be renamed... Thou SHall Not Be A Pottymouth. Let's face it, other than big ol' number one up there, nothing will kill a zonewide discussion faster than someone who can't turn on their brain-to-fingers filter. It's an MMO, chances are there are kids playing this thing. Even if not, chances are there IS someone playing who doesn't like to see profanity splayed out like you're doing a gangta rap album. Be courteous, for @#^$ sake.
    Hell yes agreed with.

    Quote:
    4) Remember The Sabbath And Keep It Holy -- In some games, there is a very healthy and complicated Endgame. Some of those have raid content that is somewhat rare (some spawns don't spawn except once every X number of days.) They often set up what has become known as a Raid Schedule. Do not "jump" your place on the Schedule. This represents a huge investment of time and planning to execute, and it will not end well for you, ever. There is nothing that can doom a guild faster than their reputation as a guild falling into the sewer. It's the kind of thing that can dog you long after you've left the guild.
Actually I have been trying to get a team together for GM's whilst standing near it, only to see another team jump into the GM, and just nail it... and not even sending an invite over (or messaging me if i want to join in). Sucks when it happens, which is why i *always* invite people who ask in local/broadcast over if they want to take part in the GM

    Quote:
    5) Honor Your Father And Mother -- Or in this case, your main tank. If the main tank is trying to tell you something, you should really listen, because it's their responsibility to keep the group alive. Similarily, let the tank get aggro, it's their job. (Looking at you, DPS guys. Don't overnuke.)
Due to class crossover, not entirely relevant, but i have seen teams wipe due to a blaster getting aggro off the tank and therefore wiping out the team. Tends to happen more with teams who *do not* know how each other play more often than not. (and yes, my controller used to spearhead some mission running teams, when he was the equivilent of a wet blaster...

    Quote:
    6) Thou Shall Not KIll -- Some games still have spawns which, if you run, will follow you. And in some of them, these spawns will aggro onto other players if they can't catch you. Do not train these guys onto your fellow players... that is, don't run over other groups just so the spawns will stop following you. In games where it's possible, it's almost always a bannable offense, and even if not, it's a jerk thing to do.
Agreed... even worse, spawning GM's in low level zones...

    Quote:
    7) Thou Shall Not Commit Adultery -- If you're in a group, and you see an advertisement for another group, give it some thought before you drop your current group like they're DOTed. And especially don't say something classy like "so long losers, these guys probably know how to play better than you." Your fellow gamers have long memories, and they keep lists.
Agreed... at least finish the fecking mission/TF before you jump!

    Quote:
    8) Thou Shall Not Steal -- In most games, spawns can be attacked by anyone, even if they're already being attacked. For GMs sake, leave the ones being attacked alone. Every group a player fights represents a time investment. For most players, they weigh every spawn to figure out if it's worth their while. When you kill steal, you are stealing time. More to the point, you are rendering that decision to attack the spawn worthless by changing the variable. If the other player's in trouble, that's one thing, but if there's time to fire off a "need help" tell, DO IT.
Not really a problem in CoX, ALTHOUGH i have seen it happen although it normally tends to be just a "1 spawn" issue. Rarely have i seen serial killstealers in CoX (unlike other MMO's)

    Quote:
    9) Thou Shall Not Bear False Witness -- All we have in a game is our reptation. Don't lie about other players to make them look bad just because you got into a disagreement. Usually, you'll be found out, and it's your rep that will suffer.
    Hell yes

    Quote:
    10) Thou Shall Not Covet -- In some games, loot is somewhat free-for-all. Anyone in the group can loot any item. And often, a group will agree to certain rules (i.e., mage items go to the mage, whereas warrior items go to the warrior). If you're in one of these groups, and you're a mage, and you're rolling on a +12 Sword of Mastery of Hacking... then you're being a colossal jerk. And you'll probably be the one whining the loudest when the ranger wins that Robe Of Pwnery.
Not a problem in CoX *yet*, and chances are never will be, due to how the reward system is set up.

See, one way or another i have found links for CoX for msot of them... could it be rewritten more specifically for CoX, of course it can.. BUT then again, i am sure that most people would also find contradictions based off their own experience...
  13. I actually enjoyed the OP, even though more because i read it in more of the "general MMO advice" style instead of specifically for CoX.

    A New Sidekick

Many many many congratulations from the caffeinated one!
  16. www.shatteredcrystal.com I have used them, and they actually email you the codes
  17. Shatteredcrystal.com is a site i have used previously (for Eve Online time codes), and i have found them reliable. Thought about giving them a shot (have to admit, its fun when they call you up the 1st time just to make sure that the order is legit, and to confirm details)... especially as it was them calling the UK
  18. Gangrel can drink enough energy drinks to use up all the bar tab at NCsoft events. He can also achieve the same feat with alcohol....
  19. no matter the style of "competition" (using this as a general term, nothing specific) there will ALWAYS be people who complain about not being able to enter via one method or another. And granted some of the codes that have been released so far at very bad times for the EU players (3am anyone?) are just right for the NA players to snag up.

Granted, i have been lucky in the past few grabbing them (origins pack, party pack and now the coralax code), i have also managed to get them for my other half as well... every single time. Infact, although i knew that the giveaway was today, i only actually followed the twitter and generally ignore the forums/facebook giveaways (seem to have worse luck with those ones).

But hell... i have seen *some* of the codes seem to be active for a period of time afterwards... and at least you cannot auction these ones off, because if you dont use it, you cant save it

At least on the plus side, they are giving them out over 12 days, and not just a 2/3 day spread...
  20. I managed to get an EU one off the twitter feed earlier on was actually the EU one that was sooo easy to read, you can miss it
  21. QR: Sorry Techbot... but notice the *qualifier* that i said... the "main groups"

I know that there are other groups out there, ones that do not use this official board to get into it... but unfortunately, as someone who IS looking to get into the RP side here... well lets just say, that the personalities of some forum goers are not what I would like to invest time in, especially with the bickering going on like spoilt kids, just trying to get the last word in...

Guess I shall just stick it out, and wait for everything to calm down before I do get into roleplaying here... thing is, there is quite a bit that it appears that I have to read up on just so that I dont make any mistakes and get lynched for it... because that does appear to happen to those who make mistakes in their plots..

    *shrugs*

Guess a whole shared universe, where unfortunately some people want to get involved with everything, and then cry/scream/whine when stuff isn't "suitable" for them... (granted, a mistake was made in the death toll, but that got retconned, and EVEN THEN people were still going... "oh ****, I would have been involved with this at the start....but I didn't like the person running the plot etc etc" (well, that is how it appeared to me)

See.... you cant please everyone, and unfortunately, the main RP'ers here have put me off from RPing in CoX on the forums, and with the main plot lines that may occour from now on... guess I shall just have to sit back and not think about it, and just stay away from forum RP, and stick to ingame...

And to be honest, there doesn't seem to be much "new stuff" aimed for the newer people (or maybe less casual) groups...

Corrections/information related to necessary links for "how to get into the groups here" would be greatly appreciated, unfortunately, my 1st few experiances of just trying to talk at GG all those years ago didnt go down well for me, as I was just ignored when i tried to talk to people in local.... >.>
  22. QR: And this is almost exactly *why* i dont RP with any of the main groups around here.....

Some of us just step back, and ignore the person when reason turns to emotional and rage-filled venom-spewing. Others spew venom right back. I am ashamed to say that sometimes I am part of the latter, especially when the debate is about something I find near and dear. Though more often than not the debate is completely ridiculous, yet people seem to go at each other like two wet cats in a duffle bag.

I suppose if not this guide, hopefully someone sometime in the future will write something a little more down to earth with a lot of the same points. Certainly, while people are a problem, there are several viable single player games to choose for our entertainment.

In the end, we're online because of the same reason we go to the pub. We want to hang out and relax, with other people, without a lot of the social hangups like spending hours to put on make up, picking the right outfit, et cetera. Just remember guys, most arguments aren't worth the effort. Just spend an hour in Virtue Atlas to figure that out.
In my own opinion, for all those who did take offense to the article, I would have to say that maybe sarcasm *doesnt* sit well with some people here [1]. Although i *DO* think that parts of it are possibly outdated, the general premise behind it is correct...

Why get all worked up over a computer game and just end up spending time throwing insults/vitriol/name calling from one to the other over the forums.

Granted I know that people can be passionate about the game, hell I have been passionate about it, and after a prolonged break from the game, I am back again... But even so, after 3 years out of the game, I *still* see the same style arguments happening, normally between the same people as years ago. And it just gets tiring seeing mud being thrown between 2 or more sides without a hose in sight to turn on the naughty puppies...

Post, sit back and enjoy the game...

well at least that is what I do... hell, I know I HAVE been guilty a few times of everything that the article mentions, and I still take find the article funny and non offensive....

CoV is not a game unto itself or else how is side-switching possible with CoH and why have the games shared the same server space, wouldn't a stand alone game merit a completely seperate space so things dont get too crowded?

    Definition of EXPAND

    transitive verb
: to increase the extent, number, volume, or scope of : enlarge

Seems like CoV did just that
Yet, as you *didn't* need City of Heroes it was also stand alone, and therefore a game in its own right.

Expansions (well at least in terms of computer games) generally means that you need the core game before you can even think about adding to it... in this case City of Villians blows that idea out of the water, as you didnt need City of Heroes to play City of Villians...

(Although owning BOTH games, meant that you could indeed create characters of BOTH sides under the same account.... and now you have the side switching etc etc etc that GR bought in.)

Infact, I know some people who bought City of Villains at launch, and never bought City of Heroes (so for them, City of Heroes was the "bad" release).

Granted, when NCsoft bought the rights to the City of Heroes franchise, it *did* make sense for them to merge the 2 games together, and give EVERYONE who owned either one of the games the other "bad game"

I think the 800lb gorillia game exemplify the definition of "expansions" quite nicely... in that you *NEED* the core game to use any of the expansions... whereas at least with CoX you can at least buy GR complete et voila, you have access to *EVERYTHING*.

The 800lb gorillia requires you to buy the original and 2 expansions to at least get up to date....
