  1. I'd ditch Jacob's Ladder. I hate the pause before the power fires. Damage is decent but nothing you'd miss. CI is pretty good even as a single target attack. The fact that it happens to arc and hit other targets is pure gravy.

    [/ QUOTE ]

When are you people going to get it?

    There is no 'proper way'.

If the player is having fun, leave it at that.

All this sanctimonious BS coming from the self appointed 'Guardians of the One True Way' is getting really old.

To the OP, THANKS for helping another person.

    [/ QUOTE ]

You're right. There is no 'One True Way' as you put it. At the same time, these are the type of same folks who leech on or foul up TFs, can't be counted on to play their role on a team, and are generally a burden until they figure it out.

I'm frankly quite selfish with my time, and I'd rather play for my own personal enjoyment rather than to spoon feed someone who can't be bothered to spend a few minutes with a manual or look something up with search.

You can call that selfish, sanctimonious, etc. I don't care. When these players start impeding on my fun is when I start drawing the line.

As I mentioned before, I've counseled hundreds of players and have a number of guides, both here and on other sites, to my credit. But I won't spend time with fools who won't put up a minimal of effort and maybe realize that they need to develop basic competence.
  4. I have a Gaussian's end/rech ready to craft and list red side. However, it's a level 50.

  7. I'd dump cobra strike and OWTS in an instant. Looks like you're using cobra strike to pump up AoE defense. I'd take the slots from there, and 6 slot stamina with Perf Shifter instead. With soft capped defenses, having a mez like cobra strike is rather superfluous IMO. And OWTS isn't that impressive.

Agree with this. At the very least, I would've suggested to try leveling up a regular character (not an epic) using missions to at least 20 before he embarrassed himself further. While I've helped more new players than I can count, I dislike spoon feeding them.

    Utility toons

Anyone else level up a number of characters for a specific, sometimes even very narrow purposes. I've rolled up a number of these in the past and still occasionally level them up. I call them "toons" as opposed to characters because they're built to fulfill specific requirements and get only as much investment of time/inf as necessary to fill them out. I contrast that with my characters, which I'll take to go through the content, get badges/accolades, spend quite a bit of inf to get IO'ed, etc.

So some of the utility toons I've had in the past and currently have:

Electric/Shield Brute (level 50) - villain farmer. Soft capped defenses, a little bit of recharge and she's all ready to farm infamy or help friends level up.

Fire/Kin Controller (level 50) - former hero farmer, now spec'ed as a buffbot for TFs. With the prevalence of AE boss farms, I think Fire/Kin's are fading as the prevalent toon for hero side farming (exception: the rare fire/kins that are extremely purpled with perma mez protection from the psi epic)

Illusion/Emp Controller (level 17) - Cavern of Transcendence "can opener". With superior invisibility and recall, designed to get the CoT trial done quickly. Sort of obsolete now with the merit system in place.

Sonic/Dark Corruptor - Tarikoss SF "can opener" (level 23) - with stealth IO, shadowfall, recall and super speed, a toon that was designed to get the Virgil Tarikoss SF done as quickly as possible. Obsolete now with the merit system in place.

Some utility toons that I wish I had:

Perma-dom Mind/Psi or Mind/Elec Dominator - a great toon to enable the sleep the Freedom Phalanx cheese for the LRSF.

High recharge Illusion/Rad Controller - best "tanking" character for the States TF.

Sonic/Cold Corruptor (level 50) - Not strictly a utility toon, but awesome to have on the LRSF since you can largely nullify Statesman's Unstoppable with benumb.

Kin/Sonic Defender (level 20 or so) - Best defender to have on the Positron and Synapse TFs since buffing teammates with speed boost makes up for the lack of stamina. For even more utility, take recall and invisibility to allow you to ghost missions.

I have a question for someone with experience with the Willpower set. I have a lv 50 Dual Blades/Willpower scrapper. He is somewhat IO'ed, somewhat SO'ed. His regen rate is about 550%. I usually don't have much trouble in teams with him.

Yesterday, I tried the ITF with him for the first time. I died repeatedly against reds and purples. Is this typical for that powerset? I had much more trouble than I was expecting. We were unable to successfully complete and I think I want to run it again but I want to be prepared.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I've "tanked" the ITF with my DB/WP brute. A different AT, but sort of the same problems you face. I went for +hp and +regen set bonuses and that helped my survivability a lot. I also liberally used inspirations, Strength of Will and the knockdown combinations with dual blades to keep the Romans off their feet.

I have tough, weave, about 2550 hps and a fairly decent regen rate even w/o RttC.

One nice thing you could try is to cap S/L defense. That may be a better way to go since Scrappers have less hitpoints. The Romans do debuff defense quickly, but unless you're ganged up, it should help alot.

Twilight is an entity all unto itself. Some people really like it as a short duration disorient and slot it like a control power. I still think that's kind of a waste of slots, but its less deplorable than slotting Rez.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Howling Twilight *should* be well slotted. It's not only a rez and a ranged stun, but also the best -regen power of the entire dark set. It also does -rech and slows movement. It's a key power in fights against hard targets (AVs, GMs) and should be slotted for both recharge and end redx.

It should not be confused with resurrect.
  14. If you're confused about set bonuses, the thing I'd recommend is to frankenslot stuff first and worry about set bonuses later. Frankenslotting, or mixing and matching IOs from different sets to achieve the attributes you want, will yield you a stronger character than just going with vanilla IOs.

This is quoted from something I wrote for another forum, so I'm cutting and pasting it here:

Continuing with this, let's talk about dual, triple and quad aspect invention enhancements. I read from the responses that many of you use level 30 or 35 generic IOs and maybe don't bother with set IOs. I'm writing this to try to convince you otherwise.

Let's look at a level 50 generic IO.

At level 50, an IO provides 42.4% enhancement of one aspect. So, 42.4% accuracy, or 42.4% damage, etc. At level 30, a generic IO outstrips the value of a similar level SO, providing 34.8% enhancement, compared to the 33% provided by an even level SO. You all pretty much know that, and Prole mentioned earlier that level 35 IOs are the equivalent of green SOs three levels higher than your character. That is also true.

However, dual, triple and quad aspect IOs provide even more punch, even if you're not going for a set bonus.

Let's look at some of the pieces in the Ranged Damage set, Devastation.

The set contains an Acc/Dmg, a Dmg/End , a Dmg/Rech, an Acc/Dmg/Rech and an Acc/Dmg/End/Rech. The set also contains a Chance to Hold proc, but let's ignore that for this illustration.

Let's take a close look at the enhancement values of these pieces. We'll assume they're all level 50 pieces.

    Acc/Dmg - provides 26.5% accuracy / 26.5% damage
    Dmg/End - provides 26.5% damage / 26.5% end redux
    Dmg/Rech - provides 26.5% damage / 26.5% recharge
    Acc/Dmg/Rech - provides 21.2% accuracy / 21.2% damage / 21.2% recharge
    Acc/Dmg/End/Rech - provides 18.55% accuracy / 18.55% damage / 18.55% end redux / 18.55% recharge

If you've slotted these enhancements, you'll end up with:

    66.25% Accuracy
119.25% Damage, which with Enhancement Diversification will be rounded down to about 97%
    45.05% End Redux
    66.25% Recharge

That's pretty good, and you get those bonuses with just 5 slots. If you slotted up the power with level 50 generics, you'd get something likes this:

    1 Accuracy - 42.5% Accuracy
3 x Damage - 113.5% Damage, which with Enhancement Diversification will be rounded down to about 96%
    1 x End Redux = 42.5% End Redux
    1 x Recharge = 42.5% Recharge

You'd be spending 1 additional slot but would get less accuracy, equivalent damage, less end reduction and less recharge. Plus the Devastation set would provide global set bonuses of 12% Regneration, maximum health increase of 2.25%, global damage boost of 3% (which exceeds limits for ED, making your damage 100% not just 97%) and a reduction on hold duration effects by 3.75%.

The reason why you get so much out of the Devastation set is because of the dual, triple and quad aspect IOs. These provide much more enhancement value than single aspect enhancements. See the total enhancement values below given at level 50:

Dual aspect IOs provide 53% enhancement value (26.5% twice)
Triple aspect IOs provide 62.6% enhancment value (21.2% three times)
Quad aspect IOs provide 74.2% enhancement value (18.55% four times)

If you don't care about set bonuses, a great way to save on enhancement slots is by taking double, triple and quad aspect IOs from many sets and combining them to give yourself 6 slots worth of power with only 3 or 4 slots.

Let's for example, slot up a ranged power with 4 slots. Again, assume level 50 IOs.

Devastation Acc/Dmg - 26.5% enhancement for each aspect
    Devastation Acc/Dmg/End/Rech - 18.55% enhancement each aspect
    Thunderstrike Dmg/Rech - 26.5% enhancement each aspect
    Thunderstrike Acc/Dmg/End - 21.2% enhancement each aspect

    Totals:
    Accuracy - 66.25%
    Damage - 92.75%
    Rech - 45.05%
    End Redux - 39.75%

If you're unsatisfied with the damage, you can also opt to replace the quad aspect Devastation with an Acc/Dmg/Rech IO which would make the damage exceed the ED limit. However, I think you can agree that the totals you can achieve by mixing and matching sets are quite impressive. If you were trying to achieve the same amount of enhancements with SOs, you have to use 5 slots even to get to the equivalent amount of just accuracy and recharge. All told, you get about 8 or 9 SOs worth of enhancement with just 4 slots!

This is why I love cheap sets. And why I think that sets like Ruin (level 40 ranged damage), Maelstrom Fury (level 35 ranged damage), Focused Smite (level 40 melee damage), Smashing Haymaker (level 35 melee damage) are so *undervalued*. Just mixing and matching these (that you can grab and craft for ludicrously low amounts of inf) can save you many slots over your character's life and provide a better and more powerful character even without worrying about the nuances of set bonuses. Best yet, you can do it very cheaply...almost as little as buying one or two full sets of SOs.
  15. If you want to min max it, you'd probably best off by just pulling either one of the end mod/acc or end mod/rech and slotting a vanilla end mod IO. That gets you to 95%+ end mod and retains the movement and hitpoint bonuses. The hitpoint bonuses are generally very desirable on a melee character unless you're already hitpoint capped in other ways (accolades, perma dull pain, tons of other hitpoint bonuses, etc.)
  16. I use placate all the time, and since my stalker is claws, I have just as many knockdown tools. I'm also SR and soft capped to boot, so I use placate primarily as a damage boost. Placate + BU + Eviscerate does some serious damage.

And I'm glad you talked about EBs later. I was going to say that if you don't need placate, you're probably not fighting things that are much of a challenge.
  17. [ QUOTE ]
Another couple of questions to couple with the OP: What is the average range for buying recipes and IOs when you're working on getting sets? Do you just buy to frankenslot or do you go for the set bonuses?

    [/ QUOTE ]

I don't really work on set bonuses until my characters are in their 30s, early 40s. At that point that's when I have enough slots to 5-6 slot powers to get the some of the better set bonuses like +rech and +def. I frankenslot before then.

Frankenslotting works great. Buy the cheapest IO recipe that has the characteristics I want. Mix and match and get 6 slots worth of performance out of 4 slots. Very worthwhile. Not as good as a fully IO'ed character with lots of set bonuses, but better than a comparatively SO'ed character at the same level. I'll start frankenslotting my characters as early as level 15. I skip DOs almost completely.
  18. What's a good baseline regeneration rate for a non-regen scrapper? I'm trying to avoid taking aid self for my fire/shield scrapper and want to know what would be a good regen rate to aim for?

I doubt I will solo AVs and such but I'll probably run through some fairly hard solo content which is just short of that. What's a good regen rate that will let me avoid chugging green inspirations...at least not very often.
  19. [ QUOTE ]
    SS/WP Brute.

    [/ QUOTE ]

    Yup.

    My recommendations hero side:

    Kat/Regen scrapper - QR at level 4 / Divine Avalanche at 8
    Ill/Rad troller - AM at 4 / Deceive at level 6
  20. I'm actually curious about the folks who put up on the market stuff like level 18 dmg/end Bruising Blows, level 23 acc/dmg focused smites or the level 32 acc/dmg ruins.

I mean I'm rather thankful that they're on the market, and very cheap; however, I don't think I'd have the patience to put that stuff on the market. I'd rather use my market slots to flip salvage.

The few times I've tried to put low level (and useful stuff) on the market, they stay there for weeks...even if I list them as low as 10 influence. Does no one frankenslot stuff out at low levels like I do? I mean I like the fact 2 level 15 acc/dmg IOs yield better results than a level 15 accuracy IO and damage IO separately. Yet personally, I'd never put a level 15 IO recipe on the market...margin is too low and it ties up a market slot.

I guess I'm just curious as to who puts this stuff out there? And who has the patience to have their market slots filled up for days/weeks at a time?

By the way, as of this writing, I have a level 25 dmg/rech Scirocco's Dervish, a level 24 acc/heal/rech Theft of Essence and a level 29 acc/dmg Touch of Death all on the market, all looking for a good home...all listed at 100 inf, all of which have sat in one of my slots for 7+ days.

    Hi guys,

I'm a new player to city of heroes and i like to know if the game is any good? can it keep me going for the next few years. I come from World of Warcraft and it was too much work to keep everything up to date, gear wise.
So tell me the pros and cons from the game and if you could suggest me the game.

    Thanks

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yes. It's very good. Some pros and cons:

    Pros:
    * No end game. It's why power leveling to 50 for the most part is sort of pointless.
    * Travel powers at level 14 or even earlier with temp powers. Speeds up getting to missions quickly.
    * Game is simple. The Archetype structure pretty much lends itself to the class structure you're used to in WoW (blasters = mage, shamans = controllers, priests = defenders/controllers/corruptors, warriors/paladins = scrappers/brutes, etc.)
    * Great character customization - best of any MMO to date
    * Sidekicking - no longer need to leave lower level friends behind
    * Looking for team - probably the best implemented in any MMO (though, I haven't looked at WoW's implementation recently)
    * Loot optional - You can play the game with store brought enhancements and pretty much skip the crafting/loot aspects of it entirely
    * No raid culture - the biggest raid takes about 50 players, takes roughly 1 - 2 hours and is done entirely with a pickup group
    * You can build your own missions
    * Game community, server community are generally very friendly / helpful
    * Game can be played in short increments very easily. Game is very casual - lite gamer friendly. It's actually sort of a let down to hardcore players who play a lot, since the game's content can be burned through so quickly.
    * Badges here aren't as obnoxious as WoW achievements
    * Free updates / issues every year that adds features, content, quality of life features

    Cons
    * No end game (see above). Some people complain that the game is shallow and the only thing you can do after you hit 50 is either gear up your character or start an alt (most start alts)
    * PvP is terrible. Even the hardcore PvPers think it's terrible.
    * PvE AI is too simplistic. There really isn't anything that challenging from a PvE standpoint that compares with the management/precision that's required for even low range raids in WoW. The bad guys here wait for you to attack and are basically just bags of hitpoints with some differentiated attacks.

I've been here off an on since 04, so I do like this game even though I think there are much to be improved.

  22. Villain EAT > Hero EAT

Wait til you start getting into teams with multiples of them. There's really no downsides to them:

    They do high damage
    They have mez protection
    They have great defenses
They get a second costume slot at level 10 (assuming you play through the arcs)
    They're great teamed and solo

I honestly wish the hero EATs could be as good. I find them needlessly complicated and also lacking for slots every level.

But then again, your mileage will vary. Your trash, my treasure and vice versa.
  23. I slot up hide with 1 def IO and leave it at that. I guess a single LoTG wouldn't be bad either. If you're WP, why not think about soft capping smashing/lethal first before you blow slots on hide?

Most of the value from hide suppresses after you attack. It's not bad slotted, but there's generally better things to slot.

    SR Softcap

    [ QUOTE ]
How would you guys softcap melee defense on a claws/SR stalker without the fighting pool? I'm having a time picking up enough melee defense set bonuses.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Here's an example build. It's not what I used (I took fighting for tough, but not weave). However, it should give you an example. It's a bit shy on AoE defense, but should give you roughly (depending on the levels of the IOs you buy): 47% melee, 45.2% ranged, 44.3% AoE.

You can play around a bit to get more AoE or more ranged depending on what you need. I personally don't care much for the Touch of Death sets, but they're what gives you melee defense. The low accuracy of the Touch of Death set is offset by the 32% global accuracy bonus.
