    They're overrated.

The "best" character is the one you find the most fun. And the people who turn down a kin controller of any type aren't people you'd want to team with anyway.

    farm defense

    1. Depends entirely on what you farm and your settings. At +0/x8 you probably don't need to be capped even on melee and range. 40%+ would be more than enough. Also, you can constantly chug purples. At higher difficulties, it will matter more.

I farmed Freakshow at +2/x8 with a cheaply built Electric/Shield brute which only had 40% AoE (though capped melee/range) and that was more than adequate until I could add some significant upgrades to the build.

    2. Fire/Kin or Spines/Fire would not be the benchmarks I would set as ultimate farming toons. Fire/Kins are used because they can farm with SOs. There are many things that can outfarm a Spines/Fire.

    1. No.
    2. If teaming is an issue for you, you have until the end of the month to move servers.

I also have to agree with PP on this issue. They're vulnerable and while a modest marketing page won't outright kill them, it will hurt. It's very little effort for potentially a sizeable increase in players. At this point, even the ardent fanboys over there are wavering. The situation over there looks like Hellgate: London part 2.
  5. There's no way I'd do that. I'd take my chances with 10-14 bronze rolls and hope to get a -kb recipe. 540 ticket gives you 9 shots at it. You could then craft it and get 10M easily for that.

EDIT: Only exception I can think of is a really low level alt that needs the funds to craft or list something more expensive.

    Thanks!
Defense is better. You're correct in that regen, while helpful, is better with ATs with more hitpoints.
  9. I haven't looked at this build in depth but drain psyche needs accuracy. Replace the recharge with accuracy. Build is looking good.

I pretty much agree with this. If inventions was introduced at the same time with ED, I think the overall perception would be a lot different. And the way the whole thing was communicated was a text book case of what you don't do.

While I like inventions quite a bit, I know lots of players who find them incredibly complicated (or not worth the bother) and hence don't bother with them. To them, even with the advent of inventions, their characters are considerably weaker than before, since they don't use set IOs. Many of these players turn to generic IOs, which in their mind are just stronger SOs that don't expire. However then, they have to deal with the Market which leaves a rather bad taste in their mouths.

Please note that I'm not talking about myself. I'm quite adept IMO at using IOs and the Market; however, I do have a lot of sympathy for players who dislike the complications ED, Inventions and the Market has brought to the game. Players used to brag that CoH was almost a gear-free MMO. You really can't say that now.

Thanks for any info that anyone has to offer!
This is what I do. I go to Atlas Park (or Cap Au Diable if you're a baddie) and just ask. I state my intentions clearly:

"Greetings Atlas Park (or Cap Au Diable), I need a volunteer to help me invite an alt for a 1-person SG. It will only take 2 mins of your time, and I will pay 300k for your time."

You'll get a string of tells and response pretty quickly. You invite the stranger to your SG, promote them some ranks if wanted, and tell them you'll send them a tell from your alt. You log onto your alt and then tell them to type /sgi {name of alt} and have them promote you some ranks.

After your alt is invited, you logon back to your SG leader character and then pay them. You then ask them to quit your SG (or you can kick them).

    Some precautions to take.
    1. Disable base entry priviledges to all but the rank of your SG leader character.
    2. Make sure only your leader can edit SG rank privileges.
    3. (Paranoid step) Go into every bin and change permissions so only the SG leader can withdraw from the bins.

This precaution ensures you don't get someone who'll loot you while you're logging on/off different characters. I've never had a problem with theft actually, but it's always a good idea to be cautious. After your alt is invited, make sure you change the permissions back so your lowbie character can access the base and the bins.

The going rate for doing this varies, but I tend to err on the side of generosity since it (at least in my mind) discourages potential theft/griefing since they'll get a good reward if they just do what they're supposed to do. I've paid upwards of 1M when I asked someone to invite 4 characters. 1M is actually quite a bargain since every character you invite nets you 20k prestige. 20k prestige costs 10M inf if you were changing inf to prestige.

People in your coalitions / teaming channels will often do this for free, and it's not a bad idea to ask someone on your server via the forums. Forumites are actually the least likely to cheat you since if they're well known, you can rat them out.

All the non-Engineer/healing minions will throw spears at you that will debuff defense. It's probably the most common way that defense based characters start suffering cascading defense failure. I can attest to the fact that Laev runs the ITF frequently, and is very well aware of what the Cimerorans can do.

Not having good ranged defense would not be a good idea. Ideally, you want both good ranged and AoE, but if I had to choose one, I'd choose to buff range.

Have you tried to buy level 33 IOs recently? I'm guessing you haven't. Some of the highly desired sets are as rare as hen's teeth at the mid levels.

Try buying a level 35 Obliteration piece. It's rather hard even if influence is no issue. Even level 35 Thunderstrikes are hard to come by.

It's why a bunch of marketeers have formed a SG to try to supply some of these IOs back into the market; however, our contribution seems like a drop of water added into a desert. Every recipe, IO have sold fast.

I'm not saying that your suggestion is bad, but that due to current market conditions, it's not as feasible as it once was.
  15. It's a nice attempt, Greenbone.

    My critiques:

    1. Don't plan on the Glad Armor +3% def all in your builds. That IO is selling off market for over the 2B "cap" on bids. And there aren't that many to go around. So even if you had the influence, the chances you could get this IO is not high. I've had a 2B influence outstanding bid on one that has been unfilled for two weeks.

    2. The build needs more recharge. You want drain psyche up as much as possible. I realize you're going for a ranged concept, but once you start using drain psyche it will drastically alter your play style. Having a constant endurance and regen buff is addictive. You want to also max out the recharge for drain psyche. 1 acc + 5 x Doctored Wounds would be optimal or 5 x Accurate Healing IOs.

    3. I'd drop ranged shot and take stunning slot. I'd 2 slot stunning shot with 2 x Stupefy or even 2 x Absolute Amazement. I'd move the slot to Drain Psyche. A ranged mez will help you far more than a poorly slotted snipe. Slot with Acc/Rech and Acc/Stun/Rech pieces for Stupefy or Rech/Acc and Rech/Stun/Acc for Absolute Amazement. 2 slotted both set offers a nice +recovery bonus.

    4. Some slotting changes:

    * Psychic Shockwave can be slotted with 3 x Eradication for 1.88% more ranged defense.
    * Weave should have a LoTG/Recharge instead of the LoTG Def/Rech piece.
    * Concentration should have two Rectified Reticles and 1 vanilla Recharge SO. I'd drop the Increased Perception IO. Having better enhancement values is better than having better perception.
    * I'd take a slot from tough, move the Steadfast Res/Def to Force of Nature and put a vanilla recharge IO into Rain of Arrows. RoA needs good recharge enhancement.
    * I'd change the Blessing of the Zephyr sets to Travel and Travel/End. With a high defense build you can get by with less kb protection and fly with just Travel/End is just too slow.
    * I'd slot Health with just the Miracle +recovery IO and move the slot to probably Drain Psyche.
  16. I'm glad you realize that being mezzed for a scrapper is a problem. I've seen so many new players who power level new scrappers and tanks and never take their mez protection. They get to level 35 or so and wonder why they're on their backs most of the time when other scrappers/tanks aren't. I've seen a level 41 dm/sr without practiced brawler about a week ago.

Please don't take this post as me trying to put you down. I'm actually praising you that you realize there's an issue with your scrapper and you're taking steps to correct it.

I generally agree on your assessment that Dark Pit is not a good choice for this because its duration/recharge ratio is so abysmal (much worse than even PG's). Similarly, while any Dark lacking Howling Twilight is terribly remiss, relying on it as a mez when faced with repeated spawns with mezzing foes (Rikti, Malta, Longbow on villains) is impractical because of both it's duration/recharge and its endurance cost.

Absent being able to use these tools in a rapid, spawn-to-spawn fashion, that role falls to Petrifying Gaze. I do concede that PG's hold stats are the worst in the game, but despite that it still fills a crucial need when soloing a DM against mezzing opponents. Neither Fearsome Stare not Siren's Song in your case will prevent a foe from mezzing you, though various -toHit effects will make it less likely. My finding is that "less likely" is not good enough for the pace and difficulty settings I like to play solo at.

I'm not going to claim PG is a great power, but I'm going to claim that it's important for the level of certainty it offers the soloist that any one foe is going to be disabled long enough for you to defeat it. If one's DM build is team-centric, then I think it's perfectly reasonable to skip the power in most cases.
In my case, I have screech, which I've stated in a subsequent post, makes pet gaze redundant for my build.

I've been here since 2004. Dark Miasma was a set available at 2004. Some of the Dark Defenders that people talk about are literally five years old. The reason why there may not as many of them is because it's five years old. People play other ATs and other combinations.

    2) Mac Pack - Valkyrie set + Mission teleporter.
    3) Good vs Evil - Mission D teleport + Jump Pack + Costume sets

I'm really torn here. Self-destruct looks like fun, but I don't know how much I'd use it. Mission teleport seems more useful, but it has a 2 hour cooldown. Mission D teleport might be useful - certainly until one gets Orobous (sp.). I can see fun ideas for all the costume sets.

Anyhow - for those of you with some or all of the above, any opinions? SPEND MY MONEY!
Mac Pack. The Valkyrie armor pieces are win and surprisingly versatile. The mission teleporter is the third best nice-to-have in the boosters apart from ninja running and the mystic fortune power.

I also have a set of bids going on the market, but judging from the very short sale history for each of them, I don't have much expectations from Wereworths.

Are there any other possible sources of low-level SOs available to me?
Your best bet is to get a helpful level 50 and duo a series of Ouro missions that contain an AV. Yes, the drop will be random, but some missions contain up to 2 AVs. Drop the 2 AVs, collect the random SO drop, slot if useful and then repeat.
  21. So I lied. Took me 7 days not 6 to get to the influence cap. Last 55M actually took an entire day and I sat at 1.945 for a day a half.

I emptied out one of my characters when I first posted to this thread, and now she's at 2B plus change (note the 2B bid on the LoTG).

My technique is also a mix of farming and marketing, but mostly just crafting recipes and selling them at a modest mark up. The recipes are acquired either right from the market or from AE.

As you can see, I trade mostly in stuff that a lot players just throw away.

I'm going to ratchet this discussion down a bit because I want to make clear I don't want to see this devolve into personal attacks. I have opinions about dark/dark and you have contrary ones and much of the different perspective may come down to play style

    With that said, my rebuttal:

    Quote:
Your very right about Dark blasts being a Exotic Damage set.Yours, is a highly resisted set.Negative Energy, especially later on in the game, is rarely resisted at all.Yours, gets resisted more and more as the game progresses.
Sonic is a mixture of smashing *and* energy damage. And the -res effect pretty much ensures high damage against just about anything. I don't worry about resistances to damage type on a sonic blast toon because it just isn't much of a factor after a few blasts.

    Quote:
I will not even dare claim that I can out damage Sonic Blasts, because in many situations, youll always out damage dark blasts. However, there are many situations that Dark blasts can Shred through enemy groups that you cant.At best, youll be on par with my damage towards end game with many of the enemy groups.Ritiki Included.
Sonic blast also has aim which increases the gap between the two blast types. I haven't taken a dark blast character against 40+ mobs, so I don't have personal knowledge about what it can do, but I think you very much overestimate the effect of enemy resistances as a contributor to the weakness of the sonic set, especially since it's a mixed damage type set and not completely all smashing damage.

    Quote:
As for Trenebous Tenticals having no use because of Tar Patch?Your way off.TT keeps the mob on the Tar patch, no having to play with the Mob to keep them there.
Tar patch keeps stuff on there long enough for me to kill them. If you have to use a power to hold them there before they're all killed, I submit you may not be doing enough damage. My dark/sonic doesn't need TT, and if I have to keep something in place (I've never had the need), I'll just put them all to sleep with Siren's Song. In groups, once tar patch is set, a blaster's AoE will have all the mobs killed anyways.

    Quote:
Dark pit, its self, can be spammed if you give it enough recharge, and Hold Duration.Being HIGHLY useful, even without the aid of howling Twilight. It being a AoE makes it even more useful after all of that. Can ST Shriek do that?I didnt think so.
Dark pit has a 60 base second recharge. Screech has a 20 base second recharge...if your theoretical build has enough recharge to spam dark pit, it can stack shriek on multiple targets in the same amount of time. I'm not sure why you'd even bother using dark pit since howling twilight in your primary does practically the same thing, is more effective and easier to use since it's a targeted range power. Further, the best AoE mez a dark defender has is Fearsome Stare, which again makes something like Dark Pit mostly redundant except in situations where you run into fear resistant foes (FS still debuffs them).

    Quote:
As for Dark Blast and Gloom, I can easly spam those back to back for very decent DPS when I face a boss. Not to mention I can Tank a boss using just these 2 powers becuase of the -toHit, and forgo any other powers during that boss if I so choose.Trust me when I tell you that reading the damage and using mids is way off when you acctually use this set.The numbers, and Mids program, do not in any way tell you about game resistances, or weakness of the things you fight.I do alot more damage then you'd think, and I dont trail behind by much.
Dark blast and gloom doesn't do close to the damage of shriek and scream, especially if you factor in the massive -20% res effect for defenders, and the tohit debuffs are completely unnecessary. Why bother with spamming tose attacks when you can just simply use darkest night which has an enhancead tohit debuff of around 30% and then use any blast you want. Throw in self +dmg buffs like aim and the gulf becomes even wider.

    Quote:
As for Nightfall being a narrow difficult to use cone? Not at all.I can hit the entire mob with this power, and it does a good amount of damage each cast. The further away you trigger this power, the more its going to hit.Granted I cant "Always" hit the entire mob, but I still tend to nail 3/4 of the mob if it was a bad line up.
I'm well versed with lining up cones, and I believe that Nightfall has the same approximate arc as Full Auto. Both require a moderate amount of positioning. However because the cone size is radically different than TT, I find that it becomes a hassle to use. If you're okay with this, then you're more tolerant.

    Quote:
Moonbeam, ill have to agree with you on this one.I dont think other then to pull a mob, which I really never do, its kinda useless in most settings.
    Hey we agree on something!

    Quote:
Life Drain, you said this one was redundant because of Twilight Grasp.I again, have to set you straight.First off, its a beautiful thing when im standing in the face of a Boss, spamming Dark Blast and Gloom in its face so it cant see me, but I am also adding Life Drain to the chain. It not only adds damage, it heals me in case i acctually do get hit by the boss in question, allowing me to heal while not breaking the DPS chain on that boss. You dont see this power useful, because you dont acctually "Tank" your enemies with your build.I however can get up close and personal with the mob if I so choose at any givin time during the fight, and be totally safe.
I can get just as close to a boss with my dark/sonic as you can with your dark/dark. IOs can easily bridge any gaps that's left with darkest night. It doesn't even need to be heavily IO'ed since darkest night (enhanced to -29% tohit debuff with just SOs), manuevers + shadowfall (around 13% defense fully enhanced with just SOs) is effectively 3% shy of the soft cap. Throw in a Steadfast Res/Def IO and hey look, I'm a "tank" at the soft cap. What you can do with your build isn't anything that other dark miasma defender of any secondary couldn't do.

    Quote:
You also havnt mentioned Petrifying Gaze.Do you not use it?If you dont, your missing out big time.
Don't even have it any dark miasma build. Completely redundant power that's made pretty worthless since you already have fearsome stare. And specifically on my sonic blast build, it's completely inferior to shriek. At best, it's a power pick for a set mule. IMO there are so many better choices you can make. I think Pet Gaze is the second worst Dark Miasma power after Black Hole.

    Quote:
Blackstar, I have no comment on this one, because I dont have it yet, but im sure its more useful then you say it is.I can already see how it can, and will be useful.
It's a defender nuke. Let's leave it at that.

    Quote:
By the way, yes, I do have a Sonic Blast Defender, so I acctually know what im talking about.A Kin/Sonic to be exact.I got bored of it around level 38, and simply stopped playing it.Sonic Blasts, even with Kinetics, was lack luster. It was alot of work, to have to team with people, just so I could use Fulcrum Shifts full glory, so I could hit as hard as a standard Blaster. While every Blaster, Tanker, Kheldian, Scrapper, ect. on the team hit even harder then that.
That could be a play style issue. Maybe sonic blast just doesn't jive with how you like to play. I like damage, and make no apologies for it. Dark Miasma is already chock full of utilities that a blast set which has yet more utilities and poor (IMO) damage has no appeal for me.

    Quote:
So forgive me if I dont see the "Synergy" of your Dark/Sonic build. It seems exactly as someone else said, akward to use.

On a side note, I cant really see how a mainly ST power set like yours, as well as the KB of some of your AoE power, can do extreemly well, unless it was on a team setting. One of the bigger questions I have for you, is how did you deal with your Endurance problems using Darkest Night and Shadow Fall constantly?I use them for Tanking the Alpha of a mob, hit them with a couple of my AoE attacks, then turn them off because they really suck up the Endurance.I tend to control entire mobs for the duration, without the aid of those powers after the Alpha of the mob, because of my Dark Blasts ability to take away there ability to hit me with no defensive toggles on.
I have zero endurance issues on my dark/sonic. I had far less as soon as I frankenslotted my blasts which were where most of the endurance was consumed. My dark/sonic is not heavily IOed and use a mixtures of IOs and SOs. She does fine with that set up.

As for taking alphas: toggle on shadowfall, toggle on darkest night, apply tar patch, heal (rarely) if alpha counter attack is harder than expected. Which is pretty much the same as any other dark miasma defender and not special to dark/dark.

I don't have shockwave and have howl and my single target blasts. It's plenty and I can get by solo even at higher number difficulties just fine.

    Quote:
If you say anything along the lines of IOs, or getting your Epic Pool, im going sit back and grin really big, because I have neither of those.

    So please, Enlighten us.
Why? IOs are part of the game. If you don't want to take advantage of it that's fine, but don't dismiss a perspective of a player who can do what you can and more with those slotted.

And in my example above I mainly stress the use of pool powers (manuevers), power choices (shadowfall, darkest night) and the use of 1 (*one) IO.

Frankly, with IOs, I think a dark/sonic build would pull further ahead because building for defense reduces the need of the dark blast tohit debuff effects even more.
  24. Build for defense (either smashing/lethal or a mixture of positional concentrating on melee defense) first and then some recharge and you should be good to go in terms of IOs.

As for concept, why limit yourself to fire armor? With power customization alot of armor types can be faked for fire. Electric and dark could probably sub in for fire armor pretty easily. With a name like Coalfist, dark melee would probably work with a secondary like WP or Invunerability. In fact, DM/Inv would make it conceputally interesting as well as synergistically powerful. Fire melee/Dark Armor would work pretty well too.

Definitely roll what you find fun, but don't let specific primary/secondary choices limit your concept.
