seeing only the last 5 bids can be a bit deceptive. and with the way the market works, with the lowest for sale price generally geting the next purchase at or above that price, it would seem that putting an item up at a lower price would be the best way to go.

looking at your sales pictures, appears that you frequently get way more than you listed an item for. example, on a recent screen shot, you sold a doctored wounds end/rech for 8M with a selling fee of 600k. if my math is correct, that would mean you listed it at 4M. with salvage needed, crafting costs, etc, 4M would still be a nice little profit but if these regularly sell for 8M or more, would it be better to list it for 6 or 7M to make sure you make a bit more when it sells?
It's a bit of a judgment call but I tend to list things for moderate profits instead of trying to eke out as much per sale as possible. Even though I get less than the going rate (and conversely, the buyer gets a bargain), I still make plenty of profit. In my guide (in the sig), I recommend going with 75% of the going rate (or lower in some cases). However, if I want to move stuff fast, I'll even list for 50 or 60% going rate. As long as you don't have tons of the same thing, you'll get near max price and the buyers won't catch on.

Going for this moderate pricing strategy is particularly true in situations where there is lots of supply and you're literally competing with other sellers in making sure your stuff sells before theirs does.

The one exception to that are on weekend days. I priced near the going rate for a bunch of IOs on Thursday evening, Friday morning because I knew sales would be brisk. If you read my Friday post, I noted this shift in strategy for that one day.
  2. Take fighting pool. Get tough and weave.
    Take Manuevers
Buy the Steadfast Res/Def IO, slot it in tough
Grab either Combat Jumping or Hover.

That all by itself should get you pretty close.

If you want to do it via IO sets, slot your melee attacks for the positional defensive bonuses. The sets that give them:

Touch of Death - Melee for 6 slotted
    Mako's Bite - Range for 6 slotted
Scirocco's Dervish (PBAoE) - AoE for 5 slotted
Obliteration (PBAoE) - Melee for 6 slotted

Also ranged attacks can take Thunderstrikes which gives ranged defense with the 4th and 6th slots. Holds and stuns also have sets that give you positional defense bonuses.

Mix and match those until you get 45%+ on each position.
  3. I'd say it's Ice/Ice/Cold. Holds, slows and ice patch for locational control. Get a little bit of range or smash/lethal defense and you're very hard to kill. Shiver wreaks havoc on enemy AI all by itself. Add in snow storm to just watch everything run in ultra slow motion.

I'd recommend /ice for dp (if you're going to survivability, not synergy) for much the same reason.

You can actually link specifically to one post by clicking the number on the top right side of each post. That would make that easier if you want to refer to a portion of it. As for the experiment as a whole work, I think it's best to link it right from the beginning since you can see the progress.

Maybe I'll create a post where I just link the major updates per day. I'll see what I can do.
  5. Easy come, easy go

Anyhow, if anyone who has any questions about what I did to make the influence or any general questions about marketeering, etc. feel free to ask.

As for giving it all away, no biggie since it was all in the name of fun and since it'll only take me 7 days of limited play to remake it all back if I chose to.

Thanks all for your comments, encouragement and just going along for the ride.

  7. Day 7 - Starting inf: 700,874,176, Ending Inf: 1,030,858,048

Screenshot of everything that didn't sell:

To be honest, the results even surprised me. It was a monster Friday day in terms of sales. My biggest worry was running out of stock, which happened twice during the day. Fortunately, with a flurry of MA ticket generation in the afternoon and with some back stock, I was able to keep the slots mostly full. Still, there were many instances where slots were left empty and I couldn't get in game. Even though, I made around 330M, it actually could've been much better.

I just logged on and sold everything I could. Listed any IOs for 10 inf and sold off some things that were going for 10M just hours before for fire sale prices. I sold off any valuable salvage and the result is 1,030,858,048. I think that's a great total for 7 days of limited play, limited farming and a good deal of marketeering.

To be honest, there was some luck that played into it. While I had two days of really bad ticket rolls, today I got some great recipes which you'll see on the sales screens below. The prize of the day: a Rectified Recticle ToHit/Recharge which sold for a cool 45M.

Knowing that it was Friday and the sales volume was quick, I priced my stock a little differently. I marked up everything higher aiming for the maximum as opposed to moderate profits. The shift in strategy definitely paid off, and I got max prices on a lot of the more desirable pieces. That's a pricing strategy I wouldn't do on any other day except Friday and some Saturdays.

I haven't verified this yet, but it looks like GhoulSlayer with a guess of 1.034B back on page 2 got the closest. The next closest was SpittingTrashcan with a guess of 1.021B.

EDIT: Yep, verified. Congratulations, GhoulSlayer! Please send me your global so I can email you the influence.

Actually, this is the perfect method to make influence as you're teaming with others. Start up your marketing first and then go team up. Make influence as you're doing something else. You don't have to use the process of generating AE tickets. I've generated quite a bit by bidding on recipes and then crafting them for resale. That doesn't take a whole lot of in-game time.
  9. Please note that there will be no morning update today. The next update will be for the final total for the experiment.
  10. Oh by the way, I'm taking day 7 guesses from this point on. This will be last guess allowed per player. I'll tabulate profits on Friday and depending on how much energy I have left after work either post the winning total on Friday (or Sat morning at the latest).

I liked the way he went out of the box in some of his slotting, Got higher resistance numbers than you, and only has about 10% less hp than you.

Not saying his is perfect, but I liked it. It was a little unconventional. I don't know how he managed to spend 1.5 bill on it... but oh well =)
If you're defense is debuffed, may I suggest you use a purple? It's overrated. Is it nice to have? Sure, but it's not an insurmountable issue.

10% less hitpoints on a scrapper is *a lot*. That affects base regen as well too.

Greater fire sword is great if you have the recharge to put into a decent attack chain. He only has 40% global recharge in that build and no hasten. I haven't looked at the optimal attack chains with GFS in it, but I suspect you need a lot more recharge for it.

I never take aid self on a shield build largely because I don't do the beat AVs without inspirations thing. If I want to solo an AV, I'll bring along 3 small greens. Big deal. Also, many times I don't even need that because my base regen is usually very high - above 300%. The build I posted has 270+% which is not bad.
  12. Day 6 - Staring inf: 626,004,416, Ending inf: 700,874,176

A slower than expected day in terms of earnings - only a 75M profit day. While only three IOs sold during the day, a late evening rally saw the sale of five more IOs. The Doctored Wounds End/Rech sales have been unexpected since I picked up a stack of them for 155k each, and they wound up selling for 9 and 10M. I'm sure I've blown that niche for someone just now, but oh well.

From a ticket generation perspective, I've had limited time and started and stopped playing probably five or six different arcs. It's been a day of interruptions, so all told I generated around 240 tickets, spent them promptly on 35-39 bronze rolls and got nothing worthwhile. That doesn't mean that you'll always get bad luck. I've had rolls where I ended up with two Regen Tissue uniques, two Steadfast Res/Defs, Basilik's and a bunch of other sellables in a small number of rolls. However, the rolls haven't been kind to me the last couple of days. Still even with that, because I've gone back to bidding on recipes to build up my sellable stock, I've still been able to generate consistent profits.

It's nice to make the 700M mark at the end of day 6. Friday is the beginning of the weekend cycle and sales will pick up. I expect sales to be brisk. There's an outside chance that I may hit the billion mark (I've had 500M Fridays before), but also factor in the fact that I'll be working a very long day tomorrow and play time will be limited again. The best guesses will probably be in the 750-850ish range. Good luck!

    The late evening rally:

To all - forgive me for mispellings or if I have inadverdently missed your guess. I will ensure that you all get a fair chance and will go over this thread a few times and finalize the list before I announce the winner.

Also, please note, I am not playing any favorites or will be manipulating the results in any way. Whatever I get by the time of the final accounting tomorrow evening will be my final total. And the person who guesses the closes will take it all.

One of the reasons for this giveaway is that it ensures that I don't cheat. That I'm not purposely puffing up earnings in order to look more skillful or needlessly puffing e-peen. I am trying my hardest with the time I have in order to make as much influence for the winner as possible, but it's all done above table. No twinking, no transfers, no gifts, etc. and if you've noticed, very little farming.

Anyways, I'm actually looking forward to the final result as much as you all are. And I've enjoyed the compliments on how some of you have been following along and been entertained.

If the build makes you and your friend happy then there's nothing more to say. Personally, I'd be very unhappy with a build like that. Poor end recovery, high end/sec endurance consumption, mediocre regen, poor global recharge. I'm astonished it cost you 1.5B.

I'd say the builds are comparable in cost but the values on almost everything except for smash/lethal resistance are higher. I also think you've suboptimized true grit - it should be slotted for hitpoints / health.

Sorry mintmiki, I'm sure I made some mistakes on that list. Others have pointed out some other errors...there were just lots of guesses and I unintentionally missed some.

So if you see any errors, please continue to point them out to me.

I've tested both sides, and blueside is much much more functional a way to pull inf out of the market into your pocket its not even funny.
That might be true if Fury's process only involves AE recipes. It doesn't. I regularly bid on and win lowball bids of a number recipes. Given the limited time I have to play, I'd run out of stock quickly if I just used AE generated recipes. In fact, though I haven't calculated to what percentage, recipes I bought off the market represents a significant portion of my earnings.

Blue side does allow you to accumulate wealth faster. That I won't argue with and it's due to volume and traffic. However, the "process" works for both sides. I'm actually tempted to demonstrate this as well on a villain but given the merger, this will might be a stillborn experiment from the get-go.

I will say that I've earned billions on both sides, and the only thing that I do differently is the type of recipes I invest in.

Redside, as it is currently, would've been different. There would be no activity for sometimes days punctuated with huge spikes of income...at least it's how it is for me. Also, what works blue side doesn't always work on red. I'm constantly surprised at how cheap stuff like Obliterations are red side, but how expensive even cheapo melee damage IOs are. I used to make some rather good infamy selling of all things, Bruising Blow on redside. Those are almost throw away IOs on blue.

I think the market merger will be great to increase availability on both sides. Redside marketeering definitely exercises your patience.

  19. Day 6 - Starting inf: 626,004,416, Current inf: 644,273,216

Starting off a little slow for day 6 and over night sales only resulted in the sale of 3 IOs (two of which are pictured). I'm hoping that sales picks up this afternoon. I also adjusted some prices lower in the hopes of shedding some of my inventory glut. While sales weren't that hot over night, 18M isn't bad considering that I was sleeping when that amount was made.

EDIT: Serendipities never fail to amaze me on how well they sell. This has been a niche of mine for a long time, and I can honestly state that I've made hundreds of millions from selling these. Best yet, I used to be able to buy stacks of 30 for 1000 inf each and craft with lowball bid salvage. I think there's a lot of other players who know about this now, but there are other niches that are just as strong.

  22. The tags on this thread have been interesting: "game is too hard" and "this is too hard *cries*". Let me ask you honestly: is what I've been doing too hard? Is there anything I can do to make it easier for those of you who are having trouble following along with what I'm doing?

This isn't me trying to single out anybody, but I've taken some pains to be as transparent as possible. And if I'm not clear about something, please ask. One of the reasons I'm doing this is to enforce my belief that *anyone* can do the same thing and achieve similar results. The only dumb questions are the ones that are never asked, so please let me know if I can make anything more clear.

I've detailed how I make MA tickets, which recipes I've bid on, what I've done in game, how much time I've spent in game per day, etc. Perhaps the only thing I haven't done is reveal every price points on what I list things at and what price everything has sold. I'm keeping some of the listing prices private only because an experiment like this is easy to sabotage. However, after this is done, I'd be more than willing to share those too. And the list prices aren't difficult to guess because the methodology I use is essentially the same one I state in the guide in my sig.

Anyways, if there's any detail that's unclear or if you have questions, please feel free to ask or send a PM.

P.S. I'm not in front of my gaming computer right now so early day 6 results will be a little delayed.
  23. To help people guess and not pick duplicates, I've tabulated all the valid guesses so far. If your guess wasn't on there, it may because:

    a) You made more than 1 guess on a single day
    b) Someone else had your guess earlier in the thread
    c) In the cases of multiple guesses, I only counted the most relevant one in your post (e.g., you made guesses for day 1, 2 and 3 and it was day 3)

Your build looks fine. Different than what I have, but it should be effective. Thought I'd post mine so you can compare. One thing I'd advise is changing slotting for imps. I hardly use them, since they die too fast. With my fire/kin/stone build I rarely use transfusion so they don't get healed. Imps for me is merely a set mule. Also, I'd rather have earth's embrace rather than hurl boulder.

I put this up for someone who was curious to see a fire/kin with the stone epic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmbgj1WHnIY
  25. Day 5 - Starting inf: 445,781,312, Ending inf: 626,004,416

Even with slow sales this morning and afternoon. Sales became brisk this evening resulting in the sale of multiple IOs. I didn't keep count as I usually do, but I had 5 more sold when I logged in right after dinner and then more as I checked the days totals. It's been a solid 180M earning day - which is exceptional for a mid week day.

Profit totals right after dinner (Boreal would get more sales later):

With the little time I had left, I earned some AE tickets by doing the Dev Choice story arc, A Mythos of Mystical Mysteries by Lord Mayhem (arc#84285). It earned a surprising 721 tickets even set at +0/x1/no bosses. Not bad.

The bronze rolls that I got with them were frankly awful. But sometimes that's how it goes. Fortunately, I think I have enough tucked away to last me for a while. We'll see.

I'll start taking guesses for day 6 after this post.
