Don't get me wrong, I do those things myself, but part of that is because I set weird personal projects like "Burn a billion inf in market fees." -
Just a warning- there's not much of a market in inspirations at all. I think they're badly underpriced, and nobody bothers to sell them as a result.
I personally think that mediums "should" be worth at least 5000 each and larges "should" be worth at least 50,000 each. Probably more if you want to actually encourage people to sell them at Wents...I have no problem paying 55,908 for a medium purple or (what's the Break Free's big brother called? Escape?) antimez.

There are two implied conditions: 1) You actually want these expensive IOs and 2) you're willing to put a little work into getting them. There's nothing wrong with wanting expensive stuff, but I'm just going to put it out there that you may not need it. Frankenslotting will probably do just fine. As for the "little work", we're talking maybe five hours to learn the basics? I don't know, I learned it in issue 9 and there were no guides. After that it's very quick.
Look at the top level of any given melee, range, healing, defense, or resistance set. That's six recipes and six enhancements. There's a good chance you can find ONE recipe/enhancement pair with the following characteristics:
1) The enhancement has "last five" sales all in the last couple days.
2) The cost of the enhancement is much greater than the cost of the ingredients, plus the cost of crafting, plus 11% for Wentfees.
3) You can afford the recipe plus the ingredients.
4) The set has at least one orange recipe in it. You can make a couple million a shot on some sets that are yellow-only, but you have to be cleverer.
Put up your fairly low bids and walk away. This is the other secret- it's like baking. You cannot rush it. When you next log in, you will probably have the recipe, and possibly have the expensive parts of the salvage.
If you've chosen your niche right you should have, say, costs of a million and a half for something that's selling for 10 million. Now list it for WELL under sale price- they sell fast, and buyers round up to the nearest number, so they'll bid 1 million, 5 million, 10 million if they're being CAREFUL.
DO NOT USE THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE:
I'm going to look at Devastation. Caps out at 50, so look only at the level 50 stuff.
All of these look implausibly good, right? Lots of sales in the last 5 days, you can buy a recipe for 100,000 and sell the crafted for 8 million? It's still good, but it's not THAT good. I'd probably go for the acc/dam myself, but any of these should work. Here's the math:
1)Buy recipe, 100K
2) Buy rikti alloy, around a million inf [by 9 PM this will be selling for millions but right now it's 300K...supply and demand swings wildly]
3) Buy everything else, maybe 100K
4) Craft it for half a million
Total investment: 1.7 million inf.
List it for, like, 5 million and 1 inf. People like to bid even numbers. You will probably get it for around the 9 million that it's selling for, but even if someone bids low and pays 5 million and 1 (of which Wents gets 10%) you still make 2 million. And you might make 6 or 7 million.
Do this five or ten times while you're learning, on five or ten different recipes. You may find something that's really really juicy. Don't overfish it- even if you CRAFT ten of those, don't put them all up for sale at once. Something where you put in 10 million and sell it for 45 million is great, but it is not guaranteed to last. At some point it's going to start selling for 15 million. Find something else. -
They just introduced a temp power Just For You [tm]! Go to Wents and look for Recovery Serum. 4 min up, 6 min down*, 5 charges, +100% end recovery.
* May be affected by global recharge bonuses, I haven't checked.
EDIT: And there's the base empowerment. 17% and lasts for an hour. -
Welcome to the forums! I am going to answer a question you didn't ask... "How can I kick more butt in the near future, and what do I have to watch out for?"
When you get to level 22 you will be eligible to use Single-Origin enhancements [SO's]. They make a LARGE difference compared to DO's. (Six DO's would double your base damage, and you can do that in three SO's.) One set of SO's costs about a million inf- let me know if that's a problem, there are easy ways to make that money- and they are available from your origin store in Talos or Independence Port.
SO's are so good you can run into "Enhancement Diversification", which is nearly impossible to hit with DO's. When you get to about three SO's worth (95% for most powers) of enhancement you hit a softcap and you hit it hard. Two SO's of the same type gets you around 67% enhancement, three gets you around 95%, four gets you... around 100%. Yeah, kind of a waste.

I'm sorry you had a poor introduction to the game.
Types of content:
1) Missions from contacts. This is where the "content" is- and it's in the mission text. You may not care WHY you have to beat up 10 trolls, or recover the elbow-guard of Hecuba, or whatever, but the text your contact gives you will explain what you're doing and why. Story arcs usually start around level 10 and tend to explain things about the world as you go- the story of Dr. Vazhilok, for instance, or what the Tsoo are planning, or whatever.
2) TF's and such: You can't add players to a Task Force once it starts, and people generally run them in one marathon session. These sessions are not as long as they used to be, because the players have gotten faster and because there are more ways to move around the cities now. (I remember one ugly Manticore TF that took NINE HOURS. Although part of that was a power outage on our end and part of that was that Infinity went down for an hour in there. Anyway, these days it goes by in a couple of hours. )
3) Newspaper or Radio missions. Originally these were added because people were running out of contacts. Then people started doing them because they were easy and fast and your team didn't have to run through three zones to do something that only the team leader cared about. Now they're like junk food.
4) Architect Entertainment [type 1]- these are missions made up by your fellow players, for people who have done all the missions repeatedly and know the stories by heart and want something new. They can be VERY deadly and full of unexpected annoyances. They can also be full of stupid stories, typos, ugly custom NPCs and "how my player got started" pointless crud.
5) Architect Entertainment [type 2]- Farms. Missions custom-designed to be as easy as possible, with as little going on as possible, and give much reward as possible. Human nature being what it is, 90%+ of the people in AE are running farms. People also run farms by repeating various missions in the "real world" but it's not quite as common.
6) Ouroboros- you can "go back in time" to do missions and contacts you missed. You get put down to a lower level and get to run story arcs all over again, do badge missions, etc.
7) Street Sweeping, Giant Monsters, Zone Events, Etc: Sometimes you just want to walk down the street hitting people. That's street sweeping. Sometimes you want to get together with a bunch of people and stop a mad robot or rampaging monster. We have Giant Monsters for your amusement. And sometimes aliens invade, or the dead rise, and you're not just going to let them stomp your planet. Are you?
I'm undoubtedly leaving things out. . . but the game is more than dress-up. (my wife has a character named Cuisinart Barbie. Even the dual blades are pink!)

There'd still be room for some profit... if I'm going to make 5 million on a crafted item instead of, say, 20 million, I'm perfectly willing to pay 55,908 instead of waiting and paying 20,908.

Welcome back. Sticker shock is much nicer when it's working in your favor.
Check my sig for a guide to "Frankenslotting"- with some patience, you can get much better results than SOs (or generic IOs) for only slightly more inf. -

(I divide builds into 3 or 4 categories. One is "generic IO's or SO's", one is frankenslotting, and then the top 1-2 are set IO's (depending on whether you have a very large budget or a Truly Unlimited budget...)
The formatting got a little crunched on Cap'n Canadian's guide to frankenslotting but it's still very solid. -
Someone claimed once (I don't know if it's true) that once you cap on tickets, you can finish the mission by clicking glowie and then run it up to the ticket cap again.
Probably worth checking out if you're taking that approach to things. -
You might get some use out of Ignite if you put it in a corner and shove everyone in there with Force Bubble. I don't use Force Bubble much and I have zero experience with Ignite, so there is no weight behind this suggestion. Although underslotting for Ignite (one hami, one L50 damage = about 75% damage) isn't going to do it any favors.
Also, and this is probably my inexperience with AR, why all the Recharge ? You're spending hundreds of millions, and a whole lot of slots, on it... FF has no rech-intensive powers in it. AR has, I thought, about fifteen activation seconds of AOE damage powers. Really, how much recharge do you need?
(Side note: Vengeance? in my FF experience, Vengance is something I'd use every 2 hours, if that. I only started paying attention when someone went below 50% health.) -
