OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHH I just got my hands on the ZBrush 3.5 upgrade. I opened it up and made a noise that was a cross between a squeal and a yodel.

Quote:How do you competitively collect artwork of your own character? I also have to say its amusing that an artist is more likely to catch flack for drawing Bayani than say Batman or Spiderman.
My approach to collecting is different from most...it's picky and suffice to say, competitive. I also don't volunteer my characters for free art and have made it clear on my dA gallery that I prefer that my character is not used in any art without permission first.
Quote:I Haaaaate this attitude and I've seen it around here from certain individuals. That if you're not an artist you really don't have anything of value to add to the discussion.
Granted, Joe off the street probably doesn't know as much about the technical aspects of art as somebody who's out there making it. But just because Joe can't do it doesn't mean he doesn't understand the process and can't add anything to a serious discussion.
Apply the concept to other areas and it's just totally ridiculous. Ex: Your opinion/review of that movie is totally crap because you're not a director/writer/actor/whatever.
The same goes for most things. You listen to the guidance of trained professionals--doctors, lawyers, electricians, etc. The glaring exception is when it comes to art. For some reason, when it comes to art, it's very common to come across a perception that everyone is entitled to their opinion and that those opinions carry more or less equal weight.
Is Citizen Kane a masterpiece? Yes. Did Joe off the street think it was boring after ten minutes? Yes. Does Joe's opinion have any bearing on cinematic history? No. -
I removed the Nadya pic because I feel it was based on a misread of the character. It was also prep for other images that I think are inappropriate based on Nadya's feedback. It's no big deal I'll just take things in another direction. More images soon.

Hi guys,
I've uploaded three wips to my gallery for the book. They are all rough, but I think this is a good stage at which to stop and then start on the next. That way I can digest the image and get some distance on it before going back and rendering the crap out of everything. The Nadya pic is an example of a more conceptual approach I'll be including supplemental to standard figurative renderings like the other two. -
Hi guys,
I just sent out a bunch of payment info, either to people's devaint accounts or straight to email, so please check when you get a chance.
Now that I'm working on the sketches, I'm wondering if people want to see wips? For example if I made a folder on my deviant page and started uploading the roughs as I did them. My plan is to do a rough sketch of all 30 characters that will serve as the "primary sketch." Then I'll go back and do more drawings, render and polish the initial sketches, etc.
What do you guys think? Do you want me to make a wip folder, or should I just keep everything under wraps? Does anyone not want other people seeing the progress on their character? -
The BWCommissions@yahoo.com email is fine. It's just not hooked up to my paypal, but I'm checking it for requests, references, etc.

Hey guys,
All the slots filled up, thanks for the support! I've already started on a couple couple characters.
Over the next couple of days, I'm going to be organizing the reference material, making sure I have all the email information, and sending out the paypal money requests. Then I think I'm going to do the initial drawings of the characters in passes. So I'll do a preliminary drawing of a character and then move on to the next without going to far into the rendering. That way everyone should be able to get something relatively soon to look at. Things will of course evolve and change as the book develops, but it's a good way to do an initial update. -
Blegh, yeah after this project I need to retire that email account and use my regular one. I'll add you to the list mang. Do you have a character in mind?
-
Exactly. A character you made up as opposed to someone else's copyrighted work.
edit: On DA it usually stands for "original character." -
Hi,
Sorry for the hassle, but if you've signed up for this, or are going to sign up, please hold off on sending payment. The email I've been using to manage commissions is not the same one that I have associated with my paypal account. I would like to let the list build for a few days, then I'll send everyone a money request directly. In the mean time, please send me your email if I don't already have it.
Thanks! -
What character would you like to have included good sir?
edit: err nvm I got your email lol -

That's crazy talk my friend. No one here speaks for anyone but themselves. I certainly don't want to see you absent from the forums.

I'm going to be taking part in a local Halloween art show next month. The overall theme of this year's show is "unmasked." So I had an idea for a large picture that would have 2 rows of faces. The upper row would be superheroes, rendered in a heroic style. The lower row would be the same people unmasked, done in a more realistic, mundane treatment. The idea would be to show the person in two different contexts for ironic, sometimes comedic effect.
For example a Statesman-like character would be shown steely jawed, powerful, determined on the top row. Beneath, they might be holding their mask/helmet...along with a fresh steak on their black eye. Or they may be popping Tylenol 3s.
I'm not looking for people's game characters to use for this. I'm looking for actual people to serve as models. When I get the group of faces that I think will work for the piece, I'll develop the heroic and mundane versions off of the reference images. There are a bunch of people that offer this kind of stock on deviantart, but given the theme I thought I'd throw it out here to see if anyone is interested in participating.
If you want to be considered you can post ref here, or link to a gallery somewhere, or pm me with the location to find it. I can't guarantee I'll use it, because I'll need to balance the image as a whole and will need to take that into consideration when choosing. But I'll let people know as soon as I've chosen and if I get a lot of ref I may do an additional piece at a later date.
Ideal ref would be a 2 closeups of your face with good lighting and clearly different expressions. -
Cashoo's cox forum avatar is the infamous G Man from the Half-Life series, lol. I guess it's not as funny if you haven't played those games.
My first cox character, Battlewraith, was inspired by Tom Wait's lyrics:
"Paleface said to the Eyeball Kid
She just goes clank, and boom, and steam
A halo, wings, horns, and a tail.
shovelling coal inside my dreams"
So when I did my DA avatar I made a female face with a halo and horns. The forum avatar here is a pic of another character, Mere Mal Faire, from a pic I did recently.
For about a year, people on Protector thought I was female. When I got outted as a guy, it spelled doom for my first and last lesbian relationship..sniff sniff... -

Lol it's actually supposed to be like a squiddy eyeball. I pictured this coat as a sort of demonic creature, maybe when she takes it off it turns into some sort of prehistoric stingray that swims/flies around.

Quote:That ain't no man, baby!
It's good to a see a nice guy like Cashoo get something wicked as this -
Quote:Lol, this is a great charactor so it's my pleasure. I'm taking a lot of artistic license with the outfit, so I hope you don't mind.
Ohhhhhh wow, this is so awesome. @___@ It's quite an honor. *spazz*
