Quote:From my perspective, the other 11 months of the year....and Im a white male. I dont mind the various history months. Lets take the time to celebrate and highlight other cultures, it doesnt cost me anything to do so.You mean, they set aside a place and time to talk about the beneficial accomplishment of white males only? In what universe?

I hate these things....you know why? The top 10 or so will be current or relatively current works. It is impossible to have the perspective to actually vote on these things.
I remember seeing a listing by Billboard for Top 100 songs of all time back in 1975.....you know what was number 1? Kung-Fu Fighting. Where would you rank it on a list now?

Quote:The funny part about the series is that, at the time it was made, half of those classes didn't even exist. Barbarian, Acrobat, and Cavalier were all added to the game for the first time two years later, for Unearthed Arcana.
The three UA classes you mention were published in various issues of Dragon Magazine back in '83. The television series came out that same year, I dont know anything about production lead times but Im guessing Gygax was working for both sources at the same time. It may be a chicken and egg sort of thing (I have a new idea for a character for the show, lets put something on paper...or I have a new class, lets add it to the cartoon)
Just FYI, Im not trying to correct anyone, youre still factually correct about playable classes

Okay heres what I drew up using your power selections and a budget of less than 1 billion (which is what I think youll get for your Purple IOs you pull out)

2. Recharge is paramount, but its also one of the most expensive things to build for. So in with Decimations, Positrons Blast and Lotgs....
3. Youre a few seconds off of perma for ML and Hasten. Thats okay. Its something you can build towards if you want.
4. Youre also a few steps shy of being at the positional defensive soft cap for all three (any defense you get from Mask Presence is halved when not hidden)
5. Endurance should not be an issue...2.2EPS delta between Use and Recovery.
6. I dont know what to do with Whirlwind. Do you want an attack or do you want an "Oh Crap" power. Your call, slot accordingly.
7. Ive rebuilt my Fort/Widow combo many times, but never with these powers or budget so please just use my slottings as a starting point and come up with your own.
Enjoy
--Frog -
Quote:1. What is the budget for this? Are we sticking to common IOs?Again, I have no idea what I'm doing with either of these builds, though I have a vague sense that recharge bonuses are the most important thing to look for and that for the Fortunata, I need to figure out how to not lose all my endurance right away while still managing to do decent damage, which has always been a head-scratcher for me because if I slot my attacks for EndRedux that means I'm not slotting them for Actually Being Able To Hit/Hurt People or not slotting them for Using Good Stuff More Often. The problem with both builds is that there are so many powers in them that want to be slotted that I can't figure out where to skimp, because when I last tried to come up with something I ended up missing a lot of damage bonuses by just one slot.
2. Theres a lot of issues, none of which that are insurmountable, but you probably should respec as opposed to just slotting new IOs
3. You should pull out and sell those purples, they arent doing you any good and could make a fair bit of moola from them.
4. You can slot for end reduction better if you went with set ios (even cheap ones), with the multi aspect nature of them you get better bang for your slots and can hit your targets of acc, end redux and damage all at the same time
5. You want recharge and some defense bonuses with you Fort. You want recharge and some defense bonuses with your widow.

Quote:I'm not thrilled about it either. But since there is nothing I can do about it, and it would be a waste of time to sit around complaining, I'll see how it plays out before I decide whether they will continue getting my money.
Quote:It's the apparent shift in the company's stance that concerns me more than anything else. We no longer seem to be valued players, we're just an income source now. I understand that's all we ever really were, but there doesn't seem to be much pretense of us being anything else anymore.
I agree. Its not that NCSoft isnt treating the customer base fairly, its not as if Im losing anything....I just dont like the policy shift. NCSoft has a right to make money, but this is out of left field for the player base and is a stark reminder that its a buisness. Im going to wait and see and make my own private decision of whether or not I remain. If it revitalizes the game like Lotro and apparently CO then Im all for it....if micro-transactions crop up even for subscribers Ill be out the door quickly.
As for "moral" grounds. What? You only like "fair trade" MMOs or something....Im confused -
I dont want you (or anyone for that matter) to take what Im about to say in a negative light. I really try to understand the angle people are taking and see through their eyes the problem they are having...but you're comments are contradictory at best.
Quote:You can make hundreds of influence. Lets assume you can make 5 million an hour on your tank. 1 million is the lowest that a FF defender (in SG mode no less) posted during that "One Hour Challenge" we had a year ago or so (anyone feel free to link it). Your circuit board at the top end costs you half a million...thats the buy it now price, then thats 6 min of game time...youre complaining about 6 mins of grinding to get the flat inf that you need to buy the item outright during the peak pricing time?
As far as my influence flow, I can make a few hundred million easily and I do know how to play the market. The issue is that I don't have a farmer in the traditional sense and I refuse to make one (such as a fire/kin controller). So I use whatever level 50 I have at hand, which right now just so happens to be my tank. With that being said, AE farming is a very long and arduous process, boring too. However, I do farm tickets every now and then to keep my WW slots full.
What youre missing is that everyone makes 5 million or more an hour or more. Theres only so many of the mid market salvage available. Youre not competing with the seller to find the right price, you're competing with all the level 50s out there who make 5M an hour. Im suprised common salvage isnt higher because theres a certain subsect of players out there to whom half a million is meaningless.
Quote:As far as not wanting to wait or paying exorbitant prices? I don't think anyone wants to be paying 10 to 20 (or more) times the normal cost of anything. I don't have time to play every day so I don't want to be waiting to buy something. Selling is obviously a different matter. Before the incarnate trials, if I wanted a circuit board immediately, it normally had cost around 500 if I wanted to wait or that much or slightly higher if I wanted it immediately. It did not cost 200 times the amount.
Quote:
It's all well and good that some of you in this forum have the time to be farming and logging in every single day, but for many of us out there we simply don't have the time to dedicate as we once had. The only positive this has brought is that sought after enhancements have come way down in price
You see other people as playing more than you and pushing prices. Ill bet you its not that at all...its the people that dont play that much driving prices, hence the spikes on the weekend and lulls on Tuesday.
In fact due to your lack of play time youre in an ideal spot to have patience and get everything much cheaper.
To sum it up...
Become a seller if you dont like the purchase price
Patience wins everytime (eventually)
Theres two sides to every transaction

Quote:We have a base builder! Please welcome Master Tinkerton to the SG. By which I mean "make it rain." It takes 2 billion inf into prestige to be promoted to where you can do base edits. [I promoted them on spec.] I'm still a little short on cash after my last melodrama, but I can sponsor at least a billion. Anyone want to help sponsor?
Ful,
Ill be sending a donation later tonight to your Freedom project. Earmark it for this if you would

Quote:And I just sold off damn near everything and cancelled my bids in a misguided round of spring cleaning. I now have three marketing characters down to one Rare Salvage each (I hope I remembered to leave them 6 inf to list), no salvage no recipes no bids, and I burned it all.
Virtue is within, like, 100 million inf of #1 again.
AAARRGH.
Ive actually been playing my Virtue 88er. Ill get on tonight and close the gap if I can afford it.....ie, its less than a couple of billion inf to take back our spot
--Frog -
Theres a couple of reasons to blow that much moola. I have billions of inf, and while I didnt make all the inf by being a wastrel there comes a point in time when zeroes lose meaning
1) Last couple of IOs to complete a build or even to complete a power...BUY NAO!!!
2) The only one at an odd level that I want....BUY NAO!!
3) Market slots are full with slow moving stuff....one slot left. BUY NAO!
I make inf so I can spend it. I dont know what the rest of you do, but the only reason I dont spend all my inf is because having a large bank roll makes it easier to make more inf.

Did anyone else find the whole 'we'll prevent Khal Drogo from waging war against us on behalf of the Targaryen's by killing his wife and unborn child' strategy a little on the ridiculous side? Killing a warlord's pregnant wife seems to me to be the perfect way to start the war you're trying to avoid. I understand the whole Targaryen angle, but it still seems a little ridiculous to get rid of one enemy in exchange for an even more dangerous enemy.
Its more than just the Targaryen angle. Theres 7 houses in Westeros, 2 of which (at least) would definitely side with Dany if she comes back. That means the Horsemen would have a place to land and stage from. Without infrastructure they are not a worrisome force on the same level they were before. -
Quote:Again I'm not questioning the wolf-link. I'm questioning your interpretation of the cause and effect relationship between them.
I don't think Sansa is a weak-willed person who lets "circumstances control her" BECAUSE she lost her wolf.
I think she lost her wolf BECAUSE she is an innately weak-willed person who lets "circumstances control her".
Once again remember that even during the brief bit of time we see Sansa -before- she got her wolf it's fairly clear (at least it was to me) what kind of "less than exceptional" character she was going to be. She wasn't "Stark-y" enough before she got the wolf, so thematically speaking her disloyal actions towards her sister effectively led to the loss of the wolf because she wasn't worthy of it to begin with.
The wolves are a reflection of the characters they are bonded to. Not the other way around.
I disagree with you disagreeing I guess is where we're at then
I think youre missing my point about what the wolves mean to the children, and I imagine Im explaining it really poorly as well. Suffice it to say theres obviously a mystical aspect that hasnt been touched on in the show or the novels (cmon a Stag, the symbol of Baratheon, piercing the throat out of a Direwolf, while the puppies all live through the birth in identical numbers as the Stark children) Then add the novels version of Brans recovery that he seems stronger when the wolves are howling...
Then add Sansa's wishywashyness, Arya, Jon, Robbs, and Brans exploits and its obvious (to me at least) theres something there. Heck I imagine Rickon is probably somewhere gathering a shaggy haired army at the age of 4....
Enjoying the series

Quote:I have no problem with the idea that the Stark children's relationship with their respective wolves is somehow "linked" to their innate personalities.
But it was already pretty clear from the first TV episode that Arya was going to become more of a strong-willed "tomboy-ish" fighter and Sansa was going to be more of a vain, courtly, self-centered yet subservient princess-type before they even got their wolves as pets. I think the wolves' fates are mirroring the paths of the characters but I'm not sure the wolves directly -caused- them to be the people they were going to become anyway.
I'm not saying your interesting theory is completely wrong because clearly there is meant to be some connection between the children and the wolves. I'm just thinking the wolves are more of a literary reflection of the type of people the children were to begin with instead of being a factor in making them become something they might otherwise not have become. Case in point I think Sansa lost her wolf because she willingly turned against her sister in favor of the Lannisters. She didn't become less "Stark-y" because her wolf died - her wolf died because she turned her back on being a Stark.
****Spoilers Spoilers Spoiler and more Spoilers*********
All the Stark children except Sansa do remarkable things and show themselves to be of remarkable mettle over the course of the novels....
Sansa is the only one who lets circumstances control her. I really think losing her wolf ties to losing her exceptionalness regardless of what traits are magnified by the wolves.
I could point out examples of how the children act above what one would expect throughout the novel and how Sansa acts "below" what we would expect (especially late in the first novel) but Id rather not spoil things for people.
No, the wolf-link is what separates the children from the masses and makes them exceptional. Lady's death will be Sansas doom.

Quote:I dunno.
I think some of them got bored and wandered off. It's always cooler doing something for the first time.
Some of them were there because of some Heroes they had a grudge against.
I haven't found a good way to get the masses fired up.
Maybe not so much "its cooler" as I dont think I can get that kind of satisfaction out of it again. I enjoyed the Crazy 88s and contributed as much as anyone. I enjoyed the run, found it to be very carthritic in a wierd way...
Im just not going to chase that high again

Quote:SPOILERS!!!!!!!
Thematically, it foreshadowed her being cut off from her homeland. Same with Arya, who also lost her direwolf, though significantly Nymeria continued to live and become somewhat of a legend in the Riverlands.
Practically, there were many, many times where having a direwolf devoted to her protection would have been helpful to Sansa.
Spoilers Spoilers Spoilers
I really hate spoiling things for people but I have a theory Ive long entertained and havent put on paper. As you watch the Arya/Sansa personalities unfold in the next couple of books Arya seems to become more feral, more A Type personality and Sansa wilts in front of the Lannisters and Kings Landing becoming more of a pawn than anything else.
I think Sansa losing her wolf took from her some innate sense of self that keeps Arya going. Arya's "Starkiness" (for want of a better word) mirrors Nymeria, she leads her pack and becomes focused on survival and revenge. Sansa just loses sight of herself and lets a successive people push her around until she finally finds an identity (maybe)
I think the Wolves are were given to the Stark children so they could do what needs to be done at a very early age. Robb and Greywind, Jon and Ghost, Bran and Summer...etc. The names chosen are prophetic and indicative of a core portion of their personality

Quote:I managed to read The Hobbit. I got about halfway through Fellowship before my brain just said, "Done.". Could not take another 12 page soliloquy on the leaves of the trees that the hobbits were passing through (hyperbole, I know, but that's what it felt like).
Not going to argue with you. But I would point out that Tolkien was writing in a different age. Just like you wouldnt put Shakespeare on the big screen without adapting it, you just cant read Tolkien like a modern fantasy writer.
That being said, I enjoyed all the books tremendously, save the Silmarillion and Children of Hurin (the later because it came out after I moved on to other things) -
I liked it, I didnt love it.
I enjoyed the books tremendously and never noted any "...and this is what they ate" passage that wasnt for a purpose. Now Wheel of Time on the other hand....ye gads!.
So anyhow, I enjoyed the casting decisions....
Jamie, Tyrion, Rob, Jon, Theon, Arya, Dany, Drogo all seem pretty spot on
Cersei could be prettier (but I like the actresses work so Im not complaining)....
Tyrion isnt ugly enough according to my wife
Robert isnt large enough. Sean Bean towers over him.
But all in all everyone pretty much looks the part....now can they sound the part...the furthest afield is Eddard but he's the name in this so I wont complain.
I wanted flashbacks dammit. One of the series main plot mysteries is only told of in flashbacks and hasnt truly been resolved....In the book Ned has flashbacks during Roberts talking of Lyanna but they just cut that out. I was hoping for clues.
Really liked the White Walkers. Tis a pity though....
"The things I do for love" is a terrific line and a terrific point to end the first show.
I dont know if it did a good enough job at hooking people. The opening vignette is going to hook the wrong kind of people for the show or turn off the right kind. It was always my initial complaint about the novels. I dont want to spoil details so Ill leave it at that.

Quote:Yeah....I was on a run this morning, where I was a flurry of activity and I ended up with the common table.I'm inclined (through experience) to believe that participating at a certain lvl qualifies you for the top 3 tiers (uncommon, rare, VR) then it is random which of the 3 you get. The common tier seems to be from participating less but reserved for people who DC or have to afk unexpectedly, while the 10 threads is for leaches.
I will admit I was on the ambush team so I didnt attack the AVs much but I most assuredly wasnt afk or d/ced or leeching
YMMV

Quote:More and more, as I browse the market looking for a niche, I find that the recipe prices + salvage+crafting cost are nearly the same as the crafted item. Sometimes the recipe cost and crafted cost are the same!
Have more people "learned to market" as inflation has hit the game, or is the market being biased towards level 50 items due to all the 50s being run for incarnate content and shard hunting? Most of the sub-max level items aren't moving at all, comparatively.
(Note that I didn't look at purples other than a glance, as I can't afford to trade in them and have yet to have one drop.)
No...a niche or two has gone away but theres still more ways to make inf on the market than one person could possibly exploit.
Even if 98% of the playerbase catches most of the high rollers just wont care about the price disparity between crafted and uncrafted. They want what they want, and they want it NAO. You just have to be in position to give it to them. -
Dont even stress about it.
The market is a fickle mistress. On one character she'll hand you a 400% profit on something you bought yesterday and another you'll lose 75million over something you bought last week...its random
Look at it this way...if the guy had 200 million to accidently over bid with then theres likely more where that came from...he's probably not hurting.
Theres a saying in my SG ...."there are two types of people in this game, those that have misbid on the market, and those that havent used the market yet"....just because my SG membership is one person doesnt make the comment any less accurate.

Quote:New people are discouraged by the market. I am confused by it, but still manage to make it work for me. But truthfully, when I see a ruby selling for a million some money I can only assume someone bought all of em and then upped the price.
Thats crappy. Thats crappy for new people especially and old people alike.
This market is better than some I have seen in games, but really there is a certain undertone to it which is not friendly.
Actually that 1M inf price tag is the most newb friendly thing in the game. For every buyer there is a seller....
For every person that says, "the price of a common salvage was too high and I was forced to pay X", theres someone else who says "wow, I cant believe I got X for my common salvage." And that seems pretty newbie friendly to me. -
There was a time (during the big 88 push) when I was logging in twice a day on 5 different alts and I was pulling down 500M to 850M daily. I didnt play during this time and quite frankly I found it boring. However, I had a newborn to take care of and wouldnt have been able to team anyhow, and quite frankly I was okay with that.
I have three characters with "omguberexpensive" builds, thats all I really need right now so Im kind of bored with the idea of making more moola. Occassionally Ill revisit one when something happens to the game to change things and Ill start to pimp out a new one but never finish.
Ive slowed down my marketing to the three 50s Ive been playing through incarnate stuff and Im enjoying the slower pace Ive made for myself. -
Quote:
Any tips on what to use it for? I'm probably a few months away from another 50 and there are only so many costume contests I can fund.
If I dont have an immediate use for a few billion and I dont feel like marketeering Ill put in a bid for Glad Armor +3%. If it hits Ill sell it off market, otherwise its just storage.....
