Quote:It doesn't have to make sense when you are playing with the books. They'll right this off for the maximum amount possible as well as claim to save however many millions they now aren't going to be spending on that other project Paragon Studios was supposed to be working on developing. But that doesn't make a lick of sense, not even a tiny shred. When you can't pay your bills, you don't quit your second job. CoH was a compartmentalized money-making machine. It wasn't costing them any money or resources to keep it going, and it was in fact padding their revenue stream. However high or low that profit margin was, it was still profit, and now that profit is gone.
Something else is the culprit. -

Quote:They can't merge the servers. Didn't you hear the news? Everyone at Paragon Studios was laid off today.to the people that are disagreeing with this comment. What the hell are you thinking.
the game is done
profitable? who the hell closes a profitable company...
get your head out of the sand its over and its over for some of the reasons this poster stated and more.
saying its not doom. is just not accpeting the facts. its over. Get over it.
And well i am as pissed as everyone 7 years in and its a ****** way to end it.
how about a server merger before the lights go out. -

1. CoH wasn't making enough profit to offset the losses from their other games which is where they make most of their money.
2. There's the rumor that Cryptic/PW refused to renew the license on the game engine or set the renewal price more expensive than what it was worth to pay.
The games shutting down on the 5 year anniversary of NCSoft acquiring the license to use Cryptic's game engine.
3. By shutting down CoH and laying off 80 odd PS employees NCSoft hopes to juggle their numbers to make the losses from their big games less worrisome. -
Dear NCSoft,

So I'm just curious to learn if the OP is happy that he'll be getting that name wipe he asked for.

Despite my many differences of opinions with people on the forums, I'm going to miss having those arguments just as much as I will miss everything else. I never took any argument personally and the next few weeks will be the last time I get to chat with friends and spar with opponents who have all been members of the best damn MMO community I ever met.

No he's absolutely right. It's our devs at City of Heroes that caused NCSoft to lose 12% revenues on it's other games - Blade & Soul's, Ntreev, Aion, & Lineage I and II. If our devs had focused their efforts on those other games instead of here things might be different today.
Quote:The mega-publisher announced that its second quarter earnings were lower than expected; it posted a Quote:$6 million loss for the period.
Revenues were down 12% from last year to $130 million, of which a vast majority came from NCsoft's online titles. The company stated that it dipped into the red due to rising labor costs, an increased marketing budget for Blade & Soul's Korean launch, and the acquisition of Ntreev. Aion was also blamed for the company's financial woes, as revenues in that title sharply decreased due to fewer microtransaction sales.
Both Lineage titles composed a great share of the company's revenues, with the first game producing 45% of sales and the sequel 13%.
And it's just a coincidence that the game is shutting down on the 5 year anniversary of acquiring the license to use Cryptics game engine to run CoH.
Yeah there's no way Cryptic/Perfect World would take advantage of the situation to get rid of their only real competition by refusing to renew the license or setting the price to renew so high NCSoft wasn't willing to pay it. -
What are they going to do about it if we do talk about other games? Shut down CoH?
-
The same stunt with the license was done to the Babylon 5 Wars. The publisher was trying to renew the license and the IP owner (Time Warner?) simply refused with no explanation.

You bet it is. I mentioned in another thread how a company in my home town up and left over the space of a weekend without saying a word to any of the employees. The employees went home on Friday, the company packed up everything in the entire building in the space of two days and left for Mexico, and the employees returned on Monday to an empty office building. 100+ people suddenly unemployed and between paychecks with no warning.
-
And if the rumor is true, then NCSoft should have said that when they made the announcement to us. Simply knowing who delivered the dickshot would put the focus where it belonged. On PW/Cryptic.
Doing it this way they've only hurt themselves. -
The hate is mainly for the way the announcement has been made with no explanation at all as to why, and to how PS was laid off with no warning.
-
Good cuz there's something I've been wanting to say to NCSoft.

Quote:Let me put it this way. I just got this email from NCSoft. Is there any idea of how that will be treated?
Or is this a "too bad, so sad" kind of thing, where they can use the EULA as a reason they don't have to refund anything?

Okay this is just rubbing salt in the wounds. I just got this automated email.

Unbelievable. -
Fair winds and following seas to all the Paragon Studios staff, and a slow agonizing death to the corporate pancakes at NCSoft that pulled the plug on CoH.
-
Nothing pompous about it. Merely stating facts. Perfect Pain spent months bashing Champions Online on our forums while she was Beta Testing it, then she bought a lifetime sub to it, then she claimed she cancelled her sub and got her money back, only to do a complete 180 and change her story two months later when she was caught still playing Champions because she used the same forum name in both games.
That's strange behaviour

Quote:The world's full of strange people. We had one girl from this game that bought a lifetime sub to CO, which she proclaimed frequently on our forums that she hated before and after it launched.I dunno man. I'm new here, but it seems like the guy saying "I told you the game would die" when everyone's bumming about the shut-down is a pretty big a-hole to me.
Go figure.
