In fact, many of the "F2P" MMOs that folks are using as their basis of comparison are former 100% subscription games who added a F2P element to their games. They aren't 100% F2P, as they still offer subscription level service...so they're "hybrid" models too using the strict definition of F2P mentioned above.
Yes and the restrictions on the free accounts in those other hybrid MMO's are just as limiting as ours will be. They just have slight variations to fit their specific needs.

Well it's probably easier to take it in stride because he knows it's his own fans who are trying to protect his copyright.

I see people violating trademarks all the time in Incarnate trials. Of course that means little - you can create a character and have him in an incarnate trial within two hours.
It's impossible for the GM's to police all the possible names. So all they have to do is show that when these things are brought to their attention thay act on them. That covers NCSofts legal butt.

  7. The new people weren't around for it but a few years ago a friendly group of players sponsored an ingame event and invited everyone to join the party. Much fun was had by all who participated.

About a month later, and this is important, a month after the event was over!!! an article was published that praised the event that was sponsored by Gay players. I forget if they were a single SG or a group of SG's.

That's when the forums erupted in a hate fueled flamewar. Blinding stupidity like if the gays can have events why can't heteros have hetero only events, and ingame christian prayer meetings. The event should have been banned because they were recruiting. Thankfully the mods started stepping in and locked/deleted threads.

So why is Queer banned? Because if idiots like that.

Please do. As long as you continue to post on the forums you are paying a subscription to support the character creation process.

    We win.

And when Freedom launches if you should choose to drop to a Premium account you will lose the ability to post on the forums, and your ability to rant in game will be curtailed to the Local, Team, Tells, and Help channels. And if you try to abuse those channels with your rants, they will quickly be moderated by the GM's.

    We still win.
  9. Fair winds and following seas as you travel on your new journey Lord_Of_Time, and my sincerest condolences to his friends and family. He will be missed.

Other free to play games I have joined some of them in allowed sending tells and chatting. The Help channel is not going to cut it, and IMO it's a bit mortifying that people think that is going to go over well.
So as a friend bump them up to Premium with either a $5 dollar purchase of PP or a cheap copy of the game off of someplace like Amazon. Surely a friendship is worth $5 bucks.

If my friends didn't already have accounts here I'd have bought several copies the game when it was on sale for $1.99 and passed out the codes to get them interested.

Preference is as PC as I get. Given a choice I prefer girls to guys. If I don't have a choice I'm being sexually assaulted.

For instance they left the game before the CoH/CoV merge and only had one of the games, then they get access to the other one now for free a potential plus, but not for those who had purchased both games or played after the merge.

If they left before IOs and the Market or AE, then not having them isn't a loss as it would be if they left after those systems were added but hadn't played enough to unlock them with the Paragon Rewards they have.

Same can also be said with Controller and Mastermind access or EATs which they don't get at all.

So returning players may or may not find an experience like they had before they left, but for free. But as Arcanaville says that's a good thing as the devs would prefer them to subscribe or buy access to those missing features because that leads to the devs getting paid rather than looking for work.

It's one thing to look at the information about what's going to happen when Freedom goes live and make an informed decision that they don't like the way it was set up so they aren't going to return, and completely another to make no attempt to find out what's going to happen and then whine because they assumed it was going to be something that it isn't.

Paragon Studios has made no secret that the game is going to be a hybrid business model with tiered access.

They expect certain restrictions because they're not paying, but the stuff listed as "Limited" on the account matrix is a wee bit vague. So they don't have a clear idea of what to expect.

So the problem is that some people are too lazy or too stupid to pay attention to the info being given out that clearly shows that CoH isn't switching to an F2P business model.

Color me unsympathetic to their complaints.

Where is the problem in this for returning players? demanding it all be given to them for free isn't someone we need returning.
I'm with TerraDraconis on this. I'm still not seeing what the problem is.

Your right. My bad there. Still not used to the new terminology.

It wouldn't bother me but it would still get petitioned and banned. To this day I'm still wondering how someone was offended by an old character I had named Phart the Dispersing who was a dark/dark scrapper.

I'm not sure it would get generic'd at all. I have a hunch that they'll let you get away with essentially labeling your character an idiot (as long as you stop shy of "retard" and the like I'd say), whereas they won't even let you attempt to label your character as "queer" (which, even in its slang use isn't universally considered negative).
What will happen is that someone will take offense on behalf of the mentally different and they'll petition it.

Not seeing how. Under the old system non-subscribers couldn't get any vet rewards, and newer subscribers were never going to catch up to long term vets.

Under the new system long term vets will get everything they already unlocked. Returning subscribers will be able cherry pick the rewards they want first, and everyone can get reward points by spending money in the store, so everyone can catch up to the long term vets.

And anyone on a pure Free account who hasn't spent a dime on the game that want's to ***** about not getting rewards can ***** off.

    Not offensive

    Queen Elizabeth - Royal Title
Fairy Queen - a mythological royal title
Nurse Nancy - A name with a job description

    Offensive

    Raging Queen
    Flaming Fairy
    Nancy Boy

So out of curiosity what unoffensive names can you come up with using queer? Cuz honestly I'm drawing a blank.

Why isn't "moron" banned, then? It's far less likely to have a usage that isn't as an intended insult.
Try using moron as a name and see how long it takes to get genericed.

I, as the character's creator, would have the final say. What I could NOT do is tell NCSoft not to use the character for their own purposes. Since the character is in their game, they can use it to promote the game in any way they choose which is not harmful to the image or value of the character or to my use of the character.

I wasn't talking about whether or not NCSoft wanted to him to do anything at all with his character. I was saying that it would have been a negative publicity crapstorm if NCSoft tried to claim sole ownership of the IP. For NCSoft it was far more profitable just getting CoH advertised to the people that love super heroes than to get in a legal pissing match over who owns an IP they weren't going to use.
