Quote:You seem too be construing a personal opinion as some kind of attack against BlueBattler, where nothing could be further from the truth.BlueBattler has already stated that he suffers from altitis. There's various reasons why he would want to do such a thing. Two of the more obvious reasons are A) He wants to create a toon as a sort of homage to the game, and thus integrate that character into a piece of lore beyond what is actually in-game B) he's bored and/or run out of ideas.
Now as you've clearly stated you've seen it done before, and done well, why should any sort of restriction be placed upon Blue, or anyone else, for that matter? Ridicule and jokes aside, it's their $15/month, so let em do what they want.
You also seem to be construing a personal opinion as an attempt to "lay down the law", where nothing could be further from the truth.
My opinion that using NPC's in such a way is silly, crass, and rather presumptuous is just that, MY opinion. I don't expect people to do what I say, nor would I ever actually ASK them too. The OP wanted people's thoughts on the idea, so I gave them.
As for what I've seen before, in that, I was referring to characters being associated with NPC's through fiction, such as the NPC being a contact of peripheral character (rarely a main character); NOT being related to them. I've NEVER seen a player character related to an NPC being done well. -
Quote:Why do you feel the need to keep saying this? Is it some odd attempt at sniping at EU roleplayers? If so, you missed.Good thing I play on the US servers, and rarely RP any of my toons.
Quote:Back to the main subject: I believe if Blue can write the stories he does, he can pull off RP'ing any toon with any sort of familial history to canonical NPCs.
Besides, can't he come up with his OWN concepts? As a writer, surely he's gifted with the ability to imagine his own character concepts and origins?
Quote:It's highly doubtful many other players would be able to perform such a feat. -
I think interacting with NPCs is fine, as long as such interaction is kept to a minimum and they don't become a focal point of the story.
Exception: If you're only writing about them, that would be fine, too. -
WSPDR Breakfast News for Saturday 11th September
The reporter looked in to the camera lens, a bored expression on his face, inserted in to the corner of the screen, a clip of a ruined building can be seen, surrounded by Arachnos troops and a shot of a Flyer can be seen in the middle of the street.
"Good morning folks, and here is the news."
"Earlier this morning, at approximately 4am, an explosion rocked the club district of our fair St. Martial, and the upper story of a newly opened business, the Zero-Point Club was reported as partially demolished."
"Insiders within Arachnos forces have reported that two individuals were seen and challenged, but managed to elude capture. It is presumed that these two terrorists were responsible for the blast and the death of two individuals, one reported to be the club owner, Mister Zero."
"Our source can be quoted as saying the interior of the building was a, and I quote, 'It's a right mess, bits of the guy were all over the place. Kinda tough on the clean up crew.'
The reporter paused as the image in the corner shifted to a shakey shot of the building interior, a phone cam recording by the looks of it. Furniture lay in ruins and part of the ceiling had collapsed. To one side, among what remained of the sofa, several splashes of red covered the scene, and two black sheet covered shapes lay still.
"No further information is available on the two terrorists responsible and our Arachnos insider said it was likely just a case of an internal dispute among various family factions."
"If true, it doesn't sound so good for clubbing in St Martial right now, and several other club owners in the area have already been reported to be planning to beef up their own security."
The reporter, still looking bored, offers the camera another small smile. "Another exciting night in the Isles, folks."
"In other news..." -

Quote:You see what I did there?
Player A: Hi, I'm Super-Ultra Dink, the great grandson of Back Alley Brawler!
Player B: No you're not! I'm Super-Duper Plonker, and *I'm* the great grandson of Back Alley Brawler!
Player A: No you're not, I am!
Player B: No, me!
Player C: Shut up you twits, *I'M* Front Lawn Fighter, the grandson of Back Alley Brawler and I don't know EITHER of you!
That's the problem with claiming to be any kind of relation to a game NPC. There could easily be others claiming the same thing; so if you meet, you could end up in a tangled mess.
Purely IMO of course, but this is nothing but godmodding the game universe and should be avoided at all costs. You have NO idea when the devs might actually include a canon relation that stuffs yours right up, and then there's also what other players are doing too.
Also, and I'm being honest here, such characters are Mary Sue's. You want your character to be more "special" than anyone elses and, to be honest, that's NOT going to gain you much respect from other players; quite the opposite in many occasions, actually.
Best to be your own character and get them famous in their OWN right, rather than trying to ride the coattails of another. -
You can't make SG's in Praetoria, so you'd have to do it in Paragon/Rogues.
-
Odd's are the mods will lock this thread again soon, anyway.

Quote:And yet you can't see how utterly offensive a horrificly abused child character, is?Not really Forse, not really at all.
The very idea of people being above the law, or putting themselves above the law, and then having the gumption to act as if they are right after doing so?
it offends me on a very deep level.
If its okay for you to break the law when you feel the need to, then what value is the law at all? Why are you defending it? Why is it okay for you to break it but not others? Are you some how better than everyone else?
You've lost it, dude. Totally. -
Quote:Please, actually pay attention and READ the posts in there. Plenty of other people were explaining the camera part. I was more interested in his laughable attempt at injecting real life objections in to it, taking the moral high ground that the law is the law and that's that; when he has the cheek to have a child who, according to her history, was horrificly abused and tortured.got called on it? from what i read you simply laughed because his character Tomb is insanely evil and he was talking about ethics, you dont seem to be able to seperate real life from RP it seems.
He get's his back up as some fictional camera planting, yet is fine with fictional child abuse.
Get it now?
Quote:You seriously think because he plays an evil child that he is himself, evil? maybe hes a ten year old little girl too, the fact that he does have such morals just means hes a brilliant rper.
Moralistic people do not do such things, even in fiction. Hence, CB's moral high ground is nothing of the sort.
Quote:Also it seems he was confused about the ways of a couple of heroes acted, he seemed to think they shouldnt break laws, apparently some do, ends justify the means and what not, thats fine, its how i play my Main even tbh, but doesnt make his point any less valid
If he believes otherwise, then time for him to PROVE it. -
For the reason behind CB's action, read the GG thread from last night on. He's taken umbridge at IC actions not involving him in any way; trying to gain some kind of moral high ground, and got called on it.

Quote:I believe the current plan is to drop Unity Station on top of the Blood Countess's castle, then through some clever trickery, have it ricochet of the rubble and land smack bang on top of Tomb's hideout, and it's reactor core will get thrown out and smack my Ellie in the mush.My Pious account is not subbed at the moment so I'm using this one.
As the Open Season plot is coming to its climax, it doesn't hurt to discuss and plan something for the future. Sounds like Zortel has something in mind?
I'm sure a few people would notice that one? -
Quote:It would still be nothing but a pee-ing contest. Even if you tried to keep it fair and hold voting, people will vote for their mates, and I don't trust anyone to tally the votes reliably anyway. To be fair if what Statesman thinks, is what goes, we wouldn't have Longbow.
Likewise the City can't stop it. Freedom of the press and Freedom of speech being a big thing in America.
It would not work. -

Quote:Actually... none of the posts say that at all FFM.
Unless you are referring to those plots run by players, where only a select group of people can have effect/input on the proceedings?
Nope, I was referring to the very plot that your robot incident was part of. It's a large plot with lots of scope for anyone to get involved if they want, and since you downscaled the incident, can be ignored.
But I guess you didn't read my post from this morning either. -
Quote:^ I guess you didn't bother reading other people's posts after your one this morning? You know, the ones where several people show that "wide" scale plots actually happen quite regularly, there's at least one going on right now.I agree. The closest I can recall to this 'umbrella' type plot is Big Lunk's Rikti War Council where representatives of almost all the active supergroups in the Unionverse actually showed up. So perhaps it could be done in a similar vain; basing the story around a Rikti threat. Or for want of a more light-hearted approach, Halloween is just around the corner. We could fashion a small plot, a common story based on the Trick or Treat events? Failing that, we could just hold a big Masquerade Party. It's been done many times before but to do one on the scale of the Ski Chalet meets would be awesome. Winter RP is hands down one of my favourites on Union because everyone from all corners of the Unionverse sets aside differences and comes together. Everyone wearing earmuffs and woolly gloves, standing around the warm fire, surrounded by picturesque snow hills and that seasonal music in the background.
I'm just hoping for more frequent events like that. Rikti Activity, Trick or Treat, Masquerade Party, Ski Chalet, maybe even a Fashion Show. I liked Bunny's idea for the Metahuman Accomplishment, Notoriety and Appreciation awards. Any of these could make for a fun, wide-reaching but non-world changing community event that could theoretically allow the involvement of all our characters. Would be rather eventful to say the least. On a personal note, it would present me and my characters a greater chance of meeting other members of the Unionverse that I wouldn't normally mingle with.
Oh, and an awards ceremony? No way. That would turn out to be nothing but an epeen waving contest. -
Quote:Thank you.
Quote:Pious here. This is characteristically optimistic of me but you know what would really be a nice thing to do? Just for the sake of bringing something tangible out from the flames of this debate and into fruition; an actual player-ran Unionverse plot. Now this is the important bit; it would need to be a plot so well ran it successfully transcends most of the well-expected woes of the player base. A story that is neither Dev-scale nor wide-scale, one that most of us can agree to subscribe to and though it negates the whole point of such a plot, still allow those who'd rather step out of it all, to do so ICly. So nothing massive or world-changing but still carrying enough momentum to reach the -hearts- of our characters; the heroes and villains of our beloved Unionverse. Can such a plot actually be enjoyed? Could it possibly be agreed on by the majority of the active Union Roleplayers? If not, then perhaps our 'shared' world... isn't so truly shared.
IMO, it's exactly the right sized plot for the Unionverse. Obviously, you can't not step on EVERYone's toes, but the fewer toes the better. -
Quote:First, PLEASE, could you break your posts in to smaller paragraphs? You make them very difficult to read.I voiced my opinion on the matter because I'm currently involved in a forum-based open RP that involves the sudden relocation of all of Paragon City (well insofar as the characters participating know is the entire city of Paragon...) to a far-off planet known as Patches. This would definitely constitute a wide-scale event, yet it was imaginatively thought out and presented to anyone that reads the forums by another PLAYER. So, according to the vast majority of the Unionverse players, such an RP would be a developer-level wide scale event, yet it's NOT.
Secondly, the only reason your Patches thread works, is because each of the US RP threads appears to be a seperate universe from any other. Therefore, it's not really a wide scale event as it's not happening on Primal Earth as such.
This is NOT the case with Unionverse RP unless the thread creator explicitly states that at the very start. All events that happen are seen as happening in the Unionverse version of Primal Earth. Such conflicts as this one are the price we pay for a persistent world; but the benefits far outweight the conflicts, most of the time.
The only real problem we have is with certain people assuming there are OOC issues with certain players, when the problem is almost always IC only. -
Quote:Ordinarily, no way. But there's nothing Ellie won't do for those she cares about, especially if they're in trouble or hurt.i am sure as a super cat Ellie could tell one fish from another .. i am also sure Ellie would not like to be a dog no matter how good its smellopowers was.
She's incredibly loyal to those she cares for, sometimes violently so. Hurt her friends at your peril, villains! -
Quote:there was a nice example of this in the Find Annette chat about FFM's Ellie trying to track, which had the best smelling power a dog or a bear. Getting the level of the in game powers balanced takes the Devs vast amounts of testing (( well i hope they test )) were as us RPer c\ant do that we have to try it and see, each time we drop in what seems a reasonable power and hope.
I think I balanced that quite well actually. Ellie's sense of smell is very good (as good as a cats), but not as good as a dogs, especially a bloodhounds. A bear is better, but a bear is impractical and would scare people. An anteater is better yet, but would alarm people. Plus, Ellie knows a dog's sense of smell is better than a cats,b ut doesn't know about the others.
Then, of course, there's the Rogues; which are apparently "full of far too many varied scents to find anything, let alone Annette". She tried and it was just overwhelming. As a sea port, fishing would likely be a major industry, and the smell of fish overpowers much! Not to mention all the bodies... -
Quote:Is that a limitation that applies to plot too? If not, why not and why make the distinction when the two are really no different? Not true actually.
Try leveling a thugs master mind, until you get a bunch of debuffs or buffs as the players powers, the pets are hellishly weak to AoE damage, which the game loves to chuck at you all the time at those levels... (Yay scrap yarders, and yay destroyers)
So its thugs, backed up by an experienced and powerful leader that become dangerous, since its the Master Mind him/her self that has all the debuffs.
And if you're talking PVE, then its bots hands down. While Thugs has the damage, Bots with the right secondary are a lot safer for AV/GM spanking.
Of course in PVP you could just beat one with confusion...
Now this is a personal pet peeve of mine, possibly along the lines of Fans and FFM and kid characters.
I can't stand people who make characters who are 'everything'.
I believe people should stick somewhat to the AT types we get. That means no DBZ martial arts scrappers, who mainly use kung fu but have more energy blasts than any blaster, of course I also dis-like it when people play Blasters that are 'tougher' than tanks.
If you can't back it with game play mechanics, don't do it. We aren't playing pen and paper after all.
And is so, then you just invalidated almost every single player plot AND character in one fell swoop, including your own.
*golf clap* -
No offense Liz, but I can't stand vampires, and my chars would off one without a seconds hesitation.
Vampires are quite probably the crappiest villains ever.
