^ Which is why they should have done it properly, and put it in its own zone. As is, it's just a lazy, half hearted attempt and it falls way short.

This should probably have asked sooner, but oh well!
What are people planning for the wider Union RP-verse with regards to the I19 storyline?
We have 2 new task forces, which depict widepread invasion from Praetoria and affecting a few zones in CoH/V. However, NOTHING is happeing to the actual zones themselves, and there are no zone events for it at all. It's ONLY happening within the instanced maps inside the task forces.
So what does that mean to the wider verse? Do we treat it as happened and RP accordingly, like we did for the second Rikti war? At least then, the devs helped us out by making it game wide, but this isn't game wide at ALL...
So what do we do?
For me, I tihnk we should treat it much like how we handled the Rikti. A verse wide incident, possibly all out war, with Praetoria; but I have a few worries. The main one being that i20 is the earliest we might actually see anything in the zones to depict it... Maybe. -

Quote:It's pretty common to have plots lay dormant for ages, due to other players being busy with RL, their own plots or just plain not interested. Hell, I've had loads for Ellie that I've just dropped due to that sort of thing.Though admittedly this is probably because I'm waiting on the 'demise of Dr Mechano' to get started but Crazy_Dragon is busy with many, many things at the moment and Omega_Chief seems to have dropped out (still interested just not able to post). The idea for the plot seemed to come at a really bad time when the two other people involved are at Uni or doing Nanowrimo (to be fair if I had known it was going to take this long to solve I may have reconsidered it, since it means I'm kind of tied with what I can do with Mechano).
Quote:This I will definitely agree on, I've tried out a number of alts and one definitely does have to 'fit the GG mould' in order to get anywhere decent. However being a former villainside player where we lack the daily meeting I'm also use to the more freeform of Pocket D RP as well, infact that was what enabled Dr Mechano's rise to infamy!
Quote:To be honest, I know quite a few people at GG don't like 'global plots', I won't name names but there are a reasonable few who steadfastly like to get as disinvolved as possible. Infact I remember atleast two or three people from GG complaining about the Rikti invasions when the second Rikti War started because they 'interupted GG meetings' which to be honest I just found kind of sad.
If some gameworld progression was going on with it, I doubt we'd mind. As it is, the Rikti, like the Coming Storm and Rularuu, are a stagnant plot point.
As for "global plots", all some of us ask is that it be made possible to not get involved, if we the players don't want to be. If something big happens in front of us, we're effectively bound to respond ICly, and well, you know, it could quite easily be interrupting something we're already doing!
Hell, when Ellie broke out the other week, I quite intentionally did it to one side of GG so that people not interested, could ignore it; but those that would be, could see something going on.
Quote:Also forum RP can happen with regards the EU side, infact before the merger it did use to happen a lot more as most of the big plots were usually on the forums to be as universal as possible, much like the Open Season one is.
Now, on the other hand, sometimes we do episodic fiction, such as the Zero Hour thread when the Rikti first returned, or the Requiem War stuff. Things like that are totally AWESOME!
Quote:Also I find trying out concepts quite hard at GG, for example I was told very specifically before hand that I wasn't allowed to merely copy my concept of Gelatinous Ruse (think Gelatinous Cube in small shapeshifting goo girl form that swallowed a portable hole...so yes she does devouring anything non-metal and has use of Hammerspace) since people would find it 'annoying' (she can say a very limited selection of words 'Goo' being the main one, which is how she got her name from the people she RP'd with in Virtue Pocket D).As I have a VERY low annoyance threshold, I don't think she was annoying.
Quote:Now the matter at hand, strangely enough while arguing against the whole 'the well has to be everything to do with Incarnates' stoof the one character I'm taking Incarnate (Amy Zon, Invuln/SS tanker) is more than happy to say that she is being empowered by a mystical force, heck her father is a Mad Scientist who used both science and magic on occasions.
She will claim to have become an Incarnate of Hercules, admittedly the system doesn't work that way at all but heck she isn't exactly the sharpest tool in the box and she will believe what she wants to believe.
Which is why I think at least one of those posters was deliberately trolling, because he knows how to push people's buttons. -
Quote:Of course, I can only speak of the official forums. Random forum RP for anyone to drop it isn't gonna happen on SG's own forums, is it?Depends on who you ask.
Forum RP is alive and well in the EU, it just might not happen as much on this forum much although Open Season seems to have done very well here.
I love forum RP but I do the majority of it on my own boards. I've found forum RP on these boards to move so fast I loose track, loose control and get very lost very quickly, hence why I've never been that good at it on here. However, I may be willing to try again sometime soon. -
Quote:Lobotomising the "villain" within the first few minutes of the plot would tend to do that. They were popular over here. >_> AFAIK, things ran out of steam because we kept pulling crazy stunts that yalls don't tend to have and the people running the main plot thus hadn't accounted for their occurrence (I've only recently learned just how different our RP styles really are), resulting in thread death. So yeah, that was probably a we bad, and definitely a my bad.
Thing is, though.. Forum RP never really massively caught on in the EU side. We tend to prefer our RP live and raw, where we can react in real time to things as they happen, and not have to wait 8 hours for the other person to wake up or get home from work. -
Quote:When the forums were first merged, one of us tried that. It was an unmitigated disaster as the styles of RP just.... didn't mesh... At all.I always thought the best course of action was integration but it all seems to resist such course. It's why it seems so exclusive to me.
Should we have persisted? Maybe... But it just seemed like forcing things. Who knows though, maybe someone will try it again, or maybe, when they eventually merge the servers (I consider that inevitable), things will gel better. -
Quote:Shadowe is being wise again. In the main we can sort them through, but sometimes those "personalities" I mentioned can get overly vocal in their opinions. It's a shame, but it's the price we pay for a universe where someone could actually write a coherent timeline, because we've all agreed that's what's happened.
I'm often considered one of those personalities. I'm loud, opinionated, and don't tolerate those I consider to be fools even slightly. I've gotten far too old and crusty to put up with that kind of shizzle. People like Z usually do a good job of cooling me off a bit, but there are some people I really should learn to just put on ignore.

Quote:I don't think calling it "clique" is fair. That word tends to have many negative connotations, and we really DON'T try to be negative at GG unless someone is being a jerk.GG is, to be blunt, very clique. I had to sit around listening for a few days, truth be told, until it started to pick up.
It IS, however, difficult to get in to. As I mentioned to Gangrel, it's a social setting with long established groups of friends. New people are welcome, and we get them often; but you do need to treat it like a proper social setting and wait for some part of the conversation you can involve yourself in.
Walking up, and just standing there listening, never speaking and waiting for someone to notice you, rarely works.
Walking up, announcing yourself loudly, and interrupting peoples conversations (as often happens) is just going to get your character labelled as a jerk.
However, walking up, listening for a little while, then introducing yourself during a pause in the chat, or maybe interjecting with a comment on the topic, usually goes down pretty well. -
Quote:I know that there are other groups out there, ones that do not use this official board to get into it... but unfortunately, as someone who IS looking to get into the RP side here... well lets just say, that the personalities of some forum goers are not what I would like to invest time in, especially with the bickering going on like spoilt kids, just trying to get the last word in...
Hey, just remember dude. You owe one of the main groups about a gallon of coffee!
Quote:Corrections/information related to necessary links for "how to get into the groups here" would be greatly appreciated, unfortunately, my 1st few experiances of just trying to talk at GG all those years ago didnt go down well for me, as I was just ignored when i tried to talk to people in local.... >.>
Think of it like a pub, but without the booze. Getting in to established groups of people out of the blue is always hard in RL too. You need to listen for a bit, look for a hook, and then chime in; just as you would in a RL social situation. -
Quote:Oh, you have NO idea...I think I'm going to leave this to Z, Floaty and Omy, because they seem better at getting the point across without coming off like they want to gnaw someones face off, however. >_>
CB, a simple fact. People will play their characters, and interpret their power levels HOWEVER THE HELL THEY WANT.
What you think they should or even "must" do, is completely and utterly irrelevant. No one cares if you think they're doing it wrong. No one cares how you play it. All we care about is having fun with a game that WE pay to play.
And now, back to what the thread is about. How will people be interpreting Incarnate for their characters?
Ellie isn't going incarnate as per the game mechanic. Instead, she's evolving into something more than she was.
Cara already has the potential for being an "omega" class mutant (as she's modelled loosely on Iceman and has his abilities in potentia), so she'll just develop.
Eloise won't bother as she's not level 50. Nor will Novastar, as I don't play him, -
Quote:See? Now you're just deliberately trolling to cause an argument. It's not just a game mechanic when it is referred to IC within the game universe!
Then it becomes part of the setting.
That, or you really ARE completely incapable of understanding a simple thing as IC and game mechanic differences. -
Quote:You're confusing game mechanics and story with roleplayer ICness. That's probably why you're having such a problem understanding what people are on about here.Frankly that is BS!
It's refereed IC throughout the game.
As an example.
Player IC has NOTHING to do game lore unless the player WANTS it to be. Otherwise, pretty much no one's characters would be possible, including your own. -
Quote:If that's what she claims her character is, that is for HER to decide, nobody else. There is a difference between a hero having a preferred hunting ground and saying that you character is still 'street level' in power/skill/what ever at 40+.
One is saying that you character prefers to fight street level crime, or prefers to help with local problems rather than costumed villains. That is fine, that is characterization.
But saying that your 40+ character, doesn't actually have any of the powers/skills/whatever that the game part of the RPG says he does, that IMO is asking every single person you meet to suspend their disbelief.
Quote:It goes even further if we consider the IC ways some one could learn of your character, the hero registration stuff? the threat system? Both of those have to be wrong whne you are wandering around in costume and some one calls out to you.
"Oh Captain Aamzing, Freakshow just kidnapped by brother, can you help me get him back?"
"Sorry Fletcher Lad, Freakshow are out of my league, anything more than a Hellion is beyond me!"
And Z, given that Omy whined about how unfair the game system was, and how it should of gone differently due to who Boundless is, when he used Boundless in an Arena match against Baron Eternity, I'd say my point was accurate.
Quote:I'm just saying that your Security level/Threat level should match your characters 'power' level, you want to play the low powered hero? Keep them low level. You want to be beyond the mightiest mortal, making people tremble in your presence? Get level 50 before you start RPing like that.
The security/threat system is an IC thing, its presented to us in the game universe, and not purely a game mechanic. Which means IMO it shouldn't just be hand waved away like a pure game mechanic, as its part of the CoX verses setting. -

Funny thing about Incarnates...
Ellie was rolled back in June 2005, way before anyone thought we'd ever get any kind of incarnate archetype.
The "human" name of her Kheldian symbiote is "Mikoshi".
A Mikoshi is a portable Shinto shrine that serves as the vehicle for a divine spirit.

Wait... What? No... Arguments?
*scratches head*
Hang on.... Let me think about this for a second.
No.
Arguments.
Hmmmm.....
Nope... Sorry, that just doesn't make any sense at all, y'know? We're Europeans, dude. We've been arguing for centuries longer than you colonials have even had a country!
Asking us to not argue is like... I dunno... Asking an American to give up his gun! Does not compute! -
Quote:Something that immediately springs to mind is the computer interface portrayed in the movie Minority Report. Looked loads of fun, but hugely impractical due to the severe muscle fatigue you'd get after a while.
The ergonomics of using gestures like that is one of the things we want to study (and one of the reasons we haven't released the system yet - it's probably coming out as free and open-source once it's really ready).
Therein lies the inherent problem with such motion based control interfaces. The Wii, Sony Move, Kinetic, even the old Eye Toy... They all have the same problem; large movements to control a computer just are not good for more than a short period of time!
Still, it's a fascinating subject and I'm really impressed with what you've shown here. Can't wait till you release something! -
Wow, that's some pretty impressive development work there, DrGamma! I take my hat of to you (and accidentally fire off my nova!
)
You'll definitely give MS a run for their money there. There's already a community building up around "hacking" the Kinect, so might be worth looking for some of their forums and letting them know about your product! -
I think that's reasonably unlikely. My way with Ellie, for example, cannot possibly impugn on anyone else's character at all.
-
This is what I've been saying all along. The ONLY person who gets a say in how they interpret what Incarnate means for their characters, is the player. No one else's opinion matters one tiniest little bit.

Quote:As I remember it, the lore has it that the box has been opened many times before, and each time results in a surge in superpowers for a few generations before it dies back, but that there are ALWAYS a few exceptions. Beings with powers beyond those of normal men, so that handily explains Nemesis. The opening of the box brings about a new age of superheroes ala Greek/Roman times which is when it was last opened and there were a LOT of heroes kicking around (seriously how many Greek heroes are there, heck Jason had a damn boat filled with them).
Though TBH, I think he's another Incarnate. -
I don't see anyone claiming they're better than the NPC'd incarnates. I don't even see anyone claiming they're better than AV's. You're imagining stuff again.
