Putting the new shinies in is a perfect excuse for updating the story, but noooo... They add new stuff and then totally ignore that it completely contradicts the static game world.
Kings Row and Steel Canyon, for example, are now meant to be heavily damaged from Praetorian incursions. Yeah... Where?
This gives us the quandry of how we deal with that. Even if you RP strictly with the game story only, and never make any of your own stuff up, it's a massive contradiction. -
^ Managing all this would be SO much easier if the devs would actually move the totally static game world on a bit. So what if some missions get retired and newbies don't get to see that content? Paying customer's are the ones that matter, and a living story helps keep those.
-
((^ Just curious. Is the big typo on the first line of the ad meant to be IC? Could be amusing if it is! ))
-
Quote:I could have told you that, dude!I was, quite frankly, alarmed at the result of getting Annette shot. I badly miscalculated the effect it would have on GG and had to bring her back in from the cold a significant amount faster than I originally planned. Quite likely she would still be missing...
Annette's popular, as is Louise. More so with some than others.
-
^ Then I guess you fail at observation, because when there's a Rikti raid during the GG meets, we DO respond to it ICly.
Every. Single. Time. -
^ That wouldn't be an issue for me. Add, not subtract, is usually reasonably safe in most things, depending on scale.
In fact, the "Must be ignorable" rule is, I think, being misunderstood or misrepresented a little. For me, at least, what this actually means that large plots are fine, as long as the plot owner provides a hook so that my chars can safely say "Ah, I see heroes X, Y and Z are on the case. I'll leave it in their capable hands then."
Presenting everyone with a fait acompli, such as a sudden explosion and a very large number of deaths, isn't ignorable in this sense. Every hero who hears it would almost certainly respond, at the very least to get down there and start helping with relief efforts (this is also one reason why we shouldn't incorporate RL disasters into the game world).
However, presenting everyone with a PLAN to cause a sudden explosion and lots of deaths? If it starts at the initial stages of procuring materials etc, then that's totally fine. It's simple to say that there are heroes out there with far more expertise that could better handle the situation, should people not want to be involved. -
Quote:People could even get a two for one deal with a little research, as since her own warehouse in Peregrine Island was firebombed, Ellie's now renting one of Richard's warehouses in Springfield, Illinois for her online fashion boutique. I don't have a problem with that either, just like Shad doesn't! (Though I'd ask for a PM beforehand...)Lumping these two together, because they're basically the same thing - HELL YES. If someone wants to attack properties owned by Huntington International, they're more than welcome to (including theft of military hardware and any number of other funky gadgets and gizmos - heck, he has a production suit of battle-armour ready, so if a new "hero" wants to "find" one, that's fine by me!). About the only restriction I'd put on it is that I be warned in advance if it's the lab in IP. Other'n that, make stuff up! Huntington own stuff all over the world, and in several zones in Paragon. Prime bait.
There's also her yahct, the White Lady, berthed at pier 11, Founders Falls Marina, and her car (a customized Mustang), stored at a private parking garage nearby. She loves both of them and would be majorly bleeped at losing them! -
Quote:Like I said, the reality is that there is almost no conflict as most people respect everyone else enough to not do it. It only seems to be one person making claims to the contrary.C'mon peoples... It's really not all that difficult.
It's only difficult when someone is so full of themselves that they go way too far on either side of the equation.
Then again, all too many people seem to be this way, so...
Then again, maybe it is just that difficult.
-
-
^ Then don't make plots that can't be ignored. Simple.
-
I don't see how you figure that, at all. A characters power level has zero to do with whether the player wants the time they pay for to be dictated by people they might not even know.
-
Quote:And have it decided by a popularity contest? Bad idea. That way, the plot owner with the most forum active friends, wins.To keep on topic of the thread, how about some form of voting method for deciiding which events/plot lines, etc become cannon to the universe?
Better idea. Leave world affecting storylines to the developers and keep player plots small enough to be ignorable by uninvolved players.
And no, they shouldn't have to justify to anyone why they don't want their pretendy fun time dictacted by someone else's pretendy fun time. If that situation is reached, the plot was probably too big. -
Quote:The thing is, a fully "shared" unionverse is extremely difficult to do in the CoH RP world without getting a lot of people's backs up. There IS no easy answer to the problem of forcing RP on others, so the path of least hassle lies in the direction of keeping small, or personal plots to the shared world, and anything larger, that folks wouldn't be able to ignore ICly, in an alt-verse where possible.Honestly, I don't quite know what to think about that. I don't generally play on Virtue, so I don't know all their RP crowd does and doesn't, but I can tell you one thing: over there, they don't say one thing, and then do another.
Now somebody please show me that I'm wrong. Because I'd really like to be.
Remember, it's all pretendy-fun time games, and no one's fun takes priority over anyone else's. We RP by consensus, or we just fight all the time.
If that's not for you, then maybe RPing on Union isn't the right thing for you. -
Quote:That kind of thing has been the cause of untold arguments in the Unionverse, and is why (generally) making world-affecting plots is a massive no-no.I'm not forcing anything on anyone, my apologies if I sounded like I was. Always been bad at translating thoughts into words, it's a failing of mine. I do have to wonder though, if the characters were to actually run into each other ingame and I'm acknowledging forum RP while you're not, what happens? Unstoppable force vs immovable object, universe implodes?
They CAN work, if stuff is worked out beforehand, but there are always going to be SOME people who will have kittens over effectively being forced in to events which they don't want any part of, but their characters wouldn't be able to ignore.
So the least painful option is to "617" it. Set it in an alt-verse so that the core game isn't affected and leave world affecting plots firmly in the land of the devs, where it belongs.
Remember, as I said before, it's taken us a LOT of arguments, over several years, to hash this kind of thing out, and arguments STILL happen over it. We'd rather try not to have TOO many more!
As for that whale incident. It was a REALLY unfortunate thing to happen, especially as it gave us EU RPers a pretty bad first impression of our first shared RP experience with the US community. Sure, it's not right to let one player's actions colour attitudes for the entire US community, but it's only human nature to go "Woah, not doing THAT again!" -
I vaguely remember, a long long time ago, that we tried to put together a thread of IC locations throughout the city... That kind of thing would be useful.

Quote:Here here! I for one think NCSoft have done a fantastic thing here, and it should only be seen in the spirit of which it was given, to help the victims of last Friday's disaster.Folks,
The snarky comments regarding NCsoft's motivation for donating to those in need are not needed, nor will they be permitted within this thread. When an organization makes a contribution to help with a crisis, it is common practice to state the amount of the donation, up to and including governments.
Please, take a moment to consider your words before you post them and ask if they're adding to the Community or detracting from it.
Thanks

Quote:Thanks for the update, Z, although I would like to put forth the idea that there is no risk in globally renaming, or even nuking, inactive trial accounts. They're not paying customers, and if they've been active more than a month or two, it's pretty unlikely they're coming back. When I trial a game, I either buy it right there, or I uninstall it and don't usually look again.
- For those of you who have known conflicting @Global chat handles due to having accounts in both the NA and EU account database: We will be offering a reactivation weekend for those with inactive accounts on NA servers and active accounts on EU servers. This will coincide with the ability to rename your @Global chat handle prior to the database merge.
- We are currently investigating options to free up @Global chat handles off of inactive trial accounts. Please keep in mind, we will only do this if it does not present a considerable amount of risk.
Paying customers trump non-paying potentials who tried it and never came back, EVERY single time.
As to the discrimination argument. Guys, please stop being silly. There is zero disscrimination here, so that EU directive cannot apply and seriously, you'd want to apply it? GREAT way to get your game account insta-banned (try reading your EULA some time).
As for the veteran status, I'm not bothered about that criteria at all. There's no way it can really be applied fairly. My only issue is with the trial accounts, and I don't think anyone has disagreed about them needing to be disregarded... -
Quote:Why would putting all the servers in the same selection list have ANY affect on performance at all? They're not dumping 1000's of players onto an already populated server...Hi Avatea,
I was just curious, what effect, if any, will this have on the speed and performance of the servers? Will there be any server upgrades during this change? I know people have been a bit concerned with server performance for a while, especially on the more populated servers.
Have a good day! -
There are 180 people working to save the reactors, not 50-70. They're working them in shifts.
Who told you they're doomed? That's by no means certain (though the sudden increase in maximum "safe" radiation levels from 100 to 250 milisieverts is rather disconcerting. That doesn't mean the workers have already had a fatal dose, though.
I think you're being WAY premature. I also think RL events, especially such horrific catastrophes as this, should stay in the real world, not pretendy fun time games. -
Quote:So? The problems might be a little involved to hit all the affected area's, but they're extremely unlikely to be THAT involved. Textboxes can scroll within themselves without needing a scrollbar. That's true, but what if the GUI's artwork is coded with that limit in mind?
You'd end up with people having global names, a letter or two longer than the game could actually display.
The point I'm making though, is that it's NOT expensive to do it in a much better way. Even if they keep the name shortening part, dumping the inactive trial accounts and giving paid accounts precedence over active trial accounts removes a LOT of the problems, AND takes care of any idiots who think its funny to name-grief. -
Quote:Increasing a field size is not particularly difficult. I've done it several times, it's no biggy.Problem is FFM, some people have global names at the character limit, you wouldn't be able to just add EU to the ends of those ones.
Oh, and before someone jumps in about "Potential dangers" and whatnot, I write software that, if it goes wrong, could result in someone losing a limb or worse. I do know what I'm talking about, here. It's not difficult to do. -

People are getting confused a lot by this whole issue, so it's time for some clarity.
Game Login names, where there is a clash, will be prepended with EU. Therefore someone who logs in with the user name 'MrPlayer' will become 'EUMrPlayer' IF there is another 'MrPlayer' in the US.
Globals are being done differently. If two people have a global of '@MrPlayer', then the EU one will get a letter dropped, and will becomg '@MrPlaye'. This will continue until the name is unique. You will then get a global rename token so you can rename to what you want.
This is, in my opinion, a TERRIBLE way to deal with is as it can seriously mangle your name. If we HAVE to be the victims of this, at least make it '@MrPlayer.EU'
However, they can relieve a LOT of the potential problems by simply first renaming ALL inactive trial accounts (this takes care of people who tried the US and reused their global name, like me). Trial accounts need not be given any consideration as, if they've been inactive for say, 2 months, it's VERY unlikely they'll ever get upgraded. Anyone trying again is likely to get a new trial.
Doing that would then leave then with a FAR smaller pool of people to deal with.
After that, rename all active trial accounts. Paying customers trump potentials. Sorry, but that's the way of things.
Then, and only then, just do the big rename. By now you've already taken care of a good 95% of the clashes and the few left... Well, better 5% get shafted than 100%, no?
Quote:I work as a developer too, and do a lot of SQL work. I don't know their table structures, but if I had that info, I could write the scripts to do it in half a day, easy.Working in a engineering/development environment always means having to balance doing the best job possible versus all of the costs/risks involved. Again all I'll say is that what the Devs are doing here with this server merge is not perfect, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that it's the closest thing to "realistically perfect" that this situation will allow. -

If you want FUN, take a Kheld with you on an ITF. Can't beat a cyst spawning along with Impy and his AV Nictus!
