  1. Wicked-cool, but you forgot the eyeball shoulder guards, the eyeball cape brooch/holder(s) and the modified widow-helmet that makes your head look like a single giant eyeball, sitting in a cup. Or how about one giant eyeball on one shoulder, with nothing on the other. Or the Eyeball Kitten!

Then there's the modification to Dark Blast, which, instead of shooting out screaming skulls, fires screaming eyeballs, with teeth, at the enemy.

I guess the question is where to stop? Eyeball Codpiece, anyone?

  3. Edit: Heh, Scooped by Memphis Bill.

Of course, it is also possible to use Set IOs but ignore Set Bonuses completely and just chose the Enhancements you want from each Set... So you could select Hold/Recharge IOs (for instance) from different sets and stack up a huge total enhancement. This approach is called 'Franken-slotting' and can be especially effective in the late teens and early twenties.

Actually, Franken-slotting can be be effective at any level, but in those early days, it's hard to get a meaningful Set Bonus and useful Enhancement at the same time.

  5. I don't know about 'distant', but I agree that Dark Melee is famously suitable for 'buzz-saw' builds, and Dual Blades is also a fast target-focussed set.

At lower levels, Energy Melee definitely fits the buzz-saw mentality and when ET and TF come in... Well... You're still a buzz-saw, with two clown-sized sledgehammers attached.

  6. Well, you can start here: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=133483

And work your way towards: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=126983

Invulnerability/Energy Melee is an 'AoE Defense/Single-target Offense' set. You have one of the best defensive suites available, with very few handicaps (except a largely irrelevant weakness to Psi-damage), coupled with arguably the most potent single-target offensive sets. Solo and on small teams, you will feel a lot like a Scrapper - select a target and DESTROY it. Next target.

As for 'how to build it'... well even with CMA's awesome guides, there are lots of options. Here is the basic ladder of powers, as I took them on my main:

  11. PsiBug, I don't think you should limit yourself.

However, if you think you have overstepped whatever value of 'collaboration' you think is appropriate, then I suggest two things:

    - PM the original artist and discuss it. Perhaps you can work on the changes Together!
    - Post the new art anyway, but be clear in the commentary that you feel you've made major alterations. Apologize, if you feel it's necessary.

But don't throttle the Art, or apologize for the Art itself.

Your piece looks to be a complete redraw of DD's art and practically nothing of her original work remains.

    Thoughts on this?
I'm not sure, CR. Yeah, I can see that the legs and face/head have been reshaped, but flip/flopping between the two images, the body-line of the pose is close enough to identical that I can't tell the difference. Certainly, a goodly part of the original lines needed to be re-traced or re-drawn, to change the fire-style.
The costume is identical, except for some details, like wrinkles. The angle and shape of the shoulder-pads, for instance are unchanged, to my eye.

Biggest change is the face and the hair.

It may be a re-draw and re-imaging of the original line-art, but I'd still count it as a valid collaboration. DD invited the work and I can see that it is the same character, in the same pose, in the same situation.

On the other hand, I can see how DD might look at the new image and wonder what part of it was hers. At what point does it stop being a collaboration of DD's pencils and PsiBug's ink and color, and transform into all PsiBug's art?

    Deep philosophical thoughts!

Meanwhile, if you just set the pixel dimensions to 576 x 720 and leave the dpi alone at 300, it'll look exactly the same and take up the same amount of storage space as the 72 dpi; the difference is that the 300 dpi 576 x720 would print out a lot smaller.
I get what you're saying, sir, and I think Camille does, too, but from an artist's POV, more pixels means more art, more details, more creativity. And even digital artists (perhaps secretly) crave seeing their work 'in print', 'in reality', and getting whatever praise it has earned. Hence, the ubiquitous 'click here to see it larger' and 'you'll have to download the big file, to see all of the details'. It's also why digital artists and those that work with digital media have Enormous hard-drives... for Storage! Not that other thing, no.

The discussion we were having was basically about not accidentally losing your hard work, by compressing it the wrong way, and negotiating the various viewing/output formats, so that your work continues to look as good as it did when you created it.

This is also why I mentioned the perks to vector line art but also in Sai because of it's vector like ability when doing line art you can scale infinitely while it's still a sai line layer.

Have I said enough good things about Sai yet?
    om nom nom nom sai
Heh, yeah, my Dad was a Marketing VP, so I've got advertising, junk-mail, and printing in my blood. My brother and I both worked Digital Pre-Press (back when that was a totally new idea and we were 'cutting edge') and Digital Publishing - I know why CMYK is different from RGB and color is different from greyscale, and why both of those have different requirements than good black & white line-art, or Text, for that matter. And, as you said, it would take all day to explain it all.

Vector Graphics are Super! They are infinitely scaleable, because they describe the Line, instead of the pixel/point/dot. You can scale the Line to be longer, or shorter, or fatter - if you do that with a pixel, you just get a big, ugly blob. The only 'problem' with vector-graphics is it's hard to get them out of your computer, since all current presentation mediums, from monitors to 4-color printers on glossy paper are dot/point/pixel based.

Which is really sad, because unless you engage in pointillism, an artist's output is all Line-based. And so, all electronic media and print media becomes a matter of clunky translation between 'reality' and presentation. It's still wicked-cool! But it's only a poor translation of the real thing.

    Art is just that special.

  22. When I build websites, I always ask for the biggest, rawest images the client has. That way, when I clean and compress the image for use on the web, I am working with the highest quality data I can get.

I think of DPI as data (details) and the 'problem' with making smaller images is that you are (selectively) losing data... data which Can Not be retrieved, once the image has been resized or compressed. Trying to stretch a small picture to fill a larger space just makes it Glaringly Obvious that you don't have enough data (details) to do it.

PsiBug's technique shows the 'purifying' effect of data-compression and Camille's observation demonstrates the folly of trying to go the other way.

And 300 dpi is fine, for a laser-printer, more than fine, for online and computer-screen viewing, but magazine-quality line-art is usually 1200 dpi, or more! In the non-electronic world, high dpi is what makes things look good! A hand-drawn image contains awesome amounts of 'data', when compared to what can be displayed on a computer-monitor. So, when you draw and especially when you Scan, think in Mega-pixels!
