Interesting strategy. I'm not quite sure what TonyV would declare as a "horrible thing" at this point but it certainly isn't news of the death of City of Heroes as we know it. That's where we differ. But good luck with the declare victory and move forward anyway approach.

I have no joy in being correct in my initial, (most likely outcome) pessimistic assessment of this situation and only admiration and respect to those who worked so diligently for a different outcome with NCSoft.

Quote:So is your agenda to solicit gut instincts, or talk people out of them? I thought your ground rules were just one short glance.Have you read Johnny's link of the Sept. 26th dinner? http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=297727
Brian, Matt and Melissa are very much there with bells on, still fighting the good fight to get PS and CoH saved. And NCSoft is apparently still talking, something that no, we never thought they would do, you're right, Intrinsic.... But they're actually talking, still, after a month! Servers, accounts, a new publisher, the Paragon Team, the IP, the engine...it's going to take some time. Nothing like that is going to happen overnight. But I really feel, deep inside, that it will happen. Talks wouldn't still be ongoing after this long is progress wasn't slowly creeping along.
So, still yes here. -
Yes rezzed but survive long term in a public, profitable sense No.

Quote:tl dr version: Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it.That was sarcasm. This isn't: do more and do better to save City of Heroes than the Titan Network has done and is doing, and I'll jump ship in an instant. My respect, loyalty and cooperation will be yours to beckon. Until then, I can't take you seriously.
I'll let you in on a secret. My biggest fear isn't that the save CoH movement fails... it's that the whole thing succeeds for like six months or less... and afterwards we the players find ourselves in the exact same situation we are now. After the self congratulatory hoopla wears off on how "we" pulled off a "miracle", the reality of the situation sets in in terms of what remains of CoH playablity, player population demographics, competition from other, newer games versus what CoH offers and the resources available to apply CoH improvements.
Nobody seems to want to talk about these factors and a "we will jump off that bridge if and when we get to it" attitude prevails. The mere mention that CoH may have already been irreparbly harmed from NCSoft's injustice is met with: "Stop urinating in my cereal" personal attacks and "I'm trying to save the game and you suck". And yet logic would seem to dictate that if things were not so rosy before that fateful Friday, they will most certainly be much worse after November 30th for some time to come.
Staying power survivability is a legit concern. I'll also point out that with the exception of that fateful Friday, I did not see from where I sat that NCSoft was especially dictatoral in their handling of Paragon Studios. And whoever comes next faces far greater challenges to make things work long term. Here's another secret: the "Freem 15" era was not really the "good old days" in terms of game development
Some people will stick with CoH if all it is is a website dedicated to recalling better times for the game. I admire that in a way. But more than anything I dread this type of announcement in our future: "It's been a great nine years. Thank you for all the blood, sweat, tears (and of course money) that went into making City of Heroes what it was. We gave it one heck of ride but it's not working out. Time for us to ride off into the sunset cause you know... in the end we are heroes that's what heroes do." That would hurt a lot of people more than a graceful Nov 30 exit ever will.
Anybody wanna discuss that and allay my fears here? Or is a cheapshot personal slam on how it's really people like me that's destroying CoH (even though I've been with this game through thick and thin for several years) more appropriate? -
People banking on a longshot will gravitate to anyone or anything that will promise to provide any form of hope. It's a perfectly natural reaction. History is filled with examples where this has produced both amazing results and some of the worst disasters known to mankind (thankfully we have nothing on that scale happening here) .
I have no way of judging ML's connections to the "inside" of what may be taking place. But some of her more recent comments in other areas trouble me greatly. The idea that NCSoft is going to infiltrate Titan with the express intent to do harm to their cause smacks of paranoia. The theory that "scientific research" is the key that can unlock the IP just strikes me as bizarre. And, worst of all, is the concept that "trolls" (my take is a troll is defined as anyone who hasn't followed the "program" as layed out by Titan or has opinions that differ from those expressed by Titan) need to be squashed at every opportunity.
This isn't the community I came to know and enjoy so well. -
Quote:Good point. Can I be ranked Number Two with all my rants about bases? [That's an Austin Powers ref ftw not a bowel movement ref ftl]I don't give up easily. If there is one person on these forums who knows about the relentless pursuit of the impossible, about bull-headed cussedness, I dare to say it's me.
Quote:I know when there is still a fight to be fought, and I know when there isn't.
Quote:We need to focus on moving forward while we still have momentum. -
Quote:Well, you are right of course (and I never meant to imply that any sort of hope is stupid). Maybe you should buy some lotto tickets... and use the millions to save CoH. That would be fantasticDoes it being a crappy outcome sound like a "miracle" to you? After what I just posted, do you really think you're doing everyone some sort of service by singing a different version of "yeah, we're screwed"? Seriously?
Jesus, people.
Again, you can combine hope for the long-shot with reminding people that it's a really long shot without making it sound like hope of any sort is stupid. -
Quote:Maybe. To use the back from the dead analogy, I'd say it depends on the the quality of life and longevity the patient has after being "saved". Some people are going to be "golden" with the ability to play CoH in any form for any amount of time after Nov 30. Ok, that's fine, I get that. And now I've probably opened the door for several "I'm sticking with CoH no matter what" posts. And that's ok too.And if someone pulls off a miracle, even a delayed one? That'd be fan-fricking-tastic.
But... the truth is that before that fateful Friday we had, from what I hear, eighty some people that had a role in maintaining what we had and cranking out new shinies at a very high rate... all to keep the game (and I'll give you the benefit of a doubt) at steady state. How many (devs and players) have left and will not return? What's the impact of that? Is it safe to assume that if there are less people working on the product and less people playing the product things are looking up? That is one heck of marketing challenge for whatever comes next.
Is CoH post Nov 30 (if it does happen) going to be a gimped version of CoH? How badly (servers, stuff, bases, etc.)? For how long? Can it survive that long financially? Nobody can answer that right now. I understand that. But you better believe I'm going to look at it very hard before I determine my level of commitment to this game in the future... if it is still around. I've had the rug pulled out from under me once. And I will say "pass" after seven and a half years if the answer is the game is "alive" but on indefinite "life support". -
Quote:Thank you for so eloquently and evenhandly putting into words many of the same things I've been thinking about lately too. Interesting times indeed. They can say very little. If you want to keep up with the bleeding edge, follow this thread at cohtitan: http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index....,5093.240.html
Victoria Victrix aka Mercedes Lackey seems to be in touch with Brian Clayton and perhaps other bigwigs who occasionally drop a hint about things.
In the end, you have to "look for the best, expect the worst". It's no small thing to take over a studio and a game like this. It takes a lot of money, a lot of drive, and a willingness to assume more risk than a taco van selling to soldiers in the Rikti War Zone.
It's one thing to say that a game doesn't need a big subscriber base to be worth keeping online once it's made back it's initial investment. It's another entirely to be making that initial investment in a game that is already mature and in a steady state or gradual decline. The return on investment in that scenario is not nearly so clear cut.
No matter how angelic the angel, the game still has to be able to show that it can not just turn a profit but generate some growth and show some acceptable returns; somewhere in the 10%/year area. Otherwise, it just doesn't make sense to invest in it.
There's also no guarantee that an angel wouldn't decide to invest elsewhere in a couple of years and sell the studio or liquidate it at that time.
As for crowdsourcing, if you have $1000 then I hope you have 2000 friends who also have $1000 to invest. That's the kind of value you're going to be looking at just for the software, customer database, and IP; never mind reopening the studio (and that's probably undervaluing it all but NCSoft is in a cash crunch and might undersell it just to get a quick infusion).
We'll see what happens but the reality is that the odds are against the game's survival at this time. Still, heroes aren't really at their best until the odds are against them. I would not advise anyone to give up or stop trying. Just try and keep the stars out of your eyes. -
Quote:Hey, go ahead and run Posi 1 and 2 as much as you like. That's your right. But, what's the financial damage of you doing that? Bad press? Pffft, NCSoft has been there and done that. So far, I'm not seeing any huge incentive for NCSoft to do or say anything more than what they already have with the possible exception of how non expired time is going to work . Actions speak louder than words and NCSoft has acted. People get that there is no Paragon Studios any longer right? And that the clock is running? And that City of Heroes has been irreparably harmed already with exodus (dev and player) and that it's only getting worse with each passing day? This. Doing whatever I can to save this game/community is far more important than indulging my so-very-justified fury. Frankly NCSoft could care less about my vitriol; and even if I could sway people with the skill of a freaking messiah to avoid their products the financial damage would still be negligible. So I channel my anger to keep me going with more civil means. And my best strategy is to continue to do so until all civil options have been exhausted. I am hardly unique in this situation.
I love CoH as much as just about anyone (have played nearly every day for well over seven years). And I love paragonwiki (and have proudly shaken TonyV's hand stating that). But I happen to hold the unpopular so called "troll's" opinion that Humpty Dumpty has had a great fall and all the king's horses... But, then again, I'm not spouting all the rhetoric about "fighting to end" either. Why are you worried about "nuclear"? Nuclear has already happened and it wasn't the players that dropped the bomb. You want to fight? Take the gloves off and fight. Otherwise exit gracefully and accept the fate of CoH has already been determined. -
Quote:I'm with you. Civil is one thing. Trying to stifle (again) people expressing their displeasure over an "injustice" (hey Brian Clayton's word not mine) is quite another. Different people deal with injustice in different ways. I don't get where individuals expressing their opinions regarding their planned course of action regarding the purchase of NCSoft products is so out of bounds... or how a couple of idiotic posts in the forum are going to torpedo sensitive negotiations... unless you are going to hunt for scapegoats in the event of failure. Idiotic posts in the forum aren't such a new thing; telling people to pipe down multiple times kind of is.I can be civil.
If NCsoft allow the CoH ip to move on to a company that will continue to develop it, I may consider buying other NCsoft games.
If they don't ... well I won't be having any more dealings with them.
That was quite civil, wasn't it?
Good luck to you guys (and I mean it). But these "you shut up cause we are doing stuff behind closed doors" stuff isn't endearing me to your cause... regardless of how noble it may be. Sorry Hyperstrike, nothing personal but I'm a free speech (within forum rules) guy first. -
Quote:Ok so now I'm confused. When eighty plus people don't get their jobs back (or if you don't get your hands on the IP for all your efforts) is it ok then to hate NCsoft... or should I hate the NCsoft haters for a self-fufilling prophecy? What if I don't hate anybody? Tell ya what. It's a whole lot easier if you lead what you want and those who wish to follow do so and those that want to speak out differently also do so. Last time I checked that was how the forum (and this community) worked best.Humor me. Just give us three or four more weeks to see how this plays out without calling for NCsoft's head on a platter. I'm trying my best, but I really need you guy's help on this. It won't take many "NCsoft doesn't give a crap about us!" posts before that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. I'm not asking you to ingratiate yourself to them, but for just a little while longer, please at least be civil. If you can't say something nice, just hold it in a little bit longer.

Pretty much this I'm afraid. The topic is today's news blurb in a couple of places on the internet specializing in a specific form of gaming. Enjoy the fifteen minutes of "fame". As to changing the thinking of an entire industry... meh doubt it.
One of the many enlightening things to me of yesterday's Coffee Talk was how the devs, to a person, seem to understand and accept the transient nature of the business. I was also struck by the incestuous (sorry, I searched for a better word but could not find it) way devs interact (i.e., we play their games, they play ours, we know them, they know us, they come here, we go there, etc. etc.).
I predict the true and everlasting impacts will not be on "the industry". Rather, it will be the effects City of Heroes has on your heart, on my heart, on the community, and on the people (past and present) who brought us this wonderful game. That is genuine and endearing. -
Great thread. You technical pros are fantastic and I think your reach is much greater than even you may realize. For example, I don't recall ever actually posting in this sub-forum before now but I read it religiously and it had a profound affect on many of my hardware and software choices. As far as I'm concerned, you guys are the best... and in a community as good as this one that says a lot! Well done guys.

[QUOTE=TonyV;4379773] I have a crazy conspiracy theory that they were actually doing us a favor. Disclaimer: This is speculation, so please don't link back to this post as proof of anything. Bear with me here.
[QUOTE]
Sorry Tony V. Props to you and what Titan is trying to do but... Your speculation is the equivalent of the kid playing in a mountain of feces shouting "There has to be a pony in here somewhere!"
The truth is closer that on a Friday afternoon a bomb was dropped and the Rikti won. Paragon Studios: wiped out, CoH: irreparably harmed (best case) or gone (probable case). It did not have to happen this way but it did... and I'm well aware of the corporate entity responsible. -
Thank you op for having the courage to tell it like it is. Here's how it was put to me not so very long ago (the context was more development for bases):
Quote:All the king's horses...If you're honestly not mentally prepared for not getting a certain thing in a video game, then maybe the issue doesn't lie with the game. You call yourself a reasonable person with reasonable expectations but neither of those things seem to be the case. Do yourself a favor and take a big step back and go watch Tropic Thunder. -

Quote:So the thing I haven't quite figured out yet is this: There are people like me, who have hounded the devs for improvements and results from like a few months after the original base code was put into effect until now without much success. Are we naive, idiotic, or eventual positive change agents? I guess time will tell.. but the multi year track record points more to naive at best. There are times I wonder if all of the original code was written by the terminally ill, because it seems practically every line of code not written after launch was written by someone no longer reachable on this plane of existence.
Which is why when they tried to modify the physics engine code, gravity started working like static electricity in the game, and then *that guy* appears to have taken the first rocket ship to Pluto. -
Quote:Great discussion and I see your point from an artistic point of view as well (and thank you for the civility, much appreciated). My profession deals with a lot of "artistic" types so I have developed a affinity for those that are good in that area for sure.
Looking past that artist crush I have, I can understand the deeper point you are trying to make.
What do you feel would have been a better promotional type activity?
Don't want to thread jack too much so I'll take a shot at answering your question and split. How about picking a "simple" functional base improvement suggestion and actually implementing it (I know, I know... standard code rant with a "Jenga on fire chaser" applies)? But, for example, I know some people that would go nuts for some more supergroup emblems (including a permanent blank one). I could see some promotion potential there. -
It is if you never tire of going "oooh and aaah" over the decorative talents of a few people (and there certainly is a place for that). But if you look behind a decorative facade and hope for more "meat on the bone" that would benefit a larger audience it's a sad story. I know others disagree, but to me this is just another example of PS promoting the wrong thing in the wrong way (while avoiding doing the right thing in the right way).

Hey, but there is always time for a sidebar on other social media besides the forum. AMIRITE?
-
Heh, I remember the days when an indefinite red name comment on bases like this would generate dozens of speculation posts on what's coming.
Now we have this one from the former head base cheerleader:
Quote:I wish I could hold onto this hope.... but I just can't anymore.. Show Me.

I think this looks fantastic and that Synapse is a modern day Thomas Edison of powersets (with just the right mix of inspiration and perspiration to consistently pull these off). Well done sir.
