Yeah, it's worth noting that in the current build BA, Tough and Weave are all rather underslotted for end reduction, so another slot in each of them would be useful.
-
Yeah, that's the fall-back. If we can't replace the internal drive without sending it to MSI, I'll give my daughter the choice of putting up with an external, or having to give up her computer for another month.
-
Quote:It's a MSI GX630-028US; here's the listing on Newegg. (It's no longer being sold, no surprise.)what's the laptop model? I'm sure some of us might be able to find you a replacement unit without too much trouble.

Thanks for your help! -
Well, one thing you're missing is Phalanx Fighting, which gives you a solid 5% defense to all positions, even when solo. You shouldn't let the situational benefits of it prevent you from taking it; a passive power worth 5% defense can save you a lot of influence on set IOs with defense bonuses.
Once you've got that, you can drop some of the other sets; for instance, the Blessing of the Zephyr set in SS. Shield doesn't need additional KB protection, so those slots are really unnecessary. -
Thanks, I'll do that; it is still under warranty. I did some preliminary searching on the web and couldn't find any replacement drives that are advertised as fitting this laptop, but that may be because it's an MSI, which seem to be uncommon compared to the better known laptop builders.
-
I know that in general laptops are much less repairable "by owner" than a desktop, but I was wondering specifically about laptop CD drives.
The DVD/CD drive on my daughter's laptop died recently; is it something I can replace myself? Her laptop is still under warranty, and recently had the graphics card replaced by the manufacturer, but I'd like to know whether I have any other options than sending it back--it cost $50 to ship UPS last time and almost a month out of service between ship and repair times.
Any suggestions appreciated! -
Much better. The only problems that I see are that Jab and Haymaker are underslotted for accuracy and damage, and that Fire Blast is unslotted for accuracy. At least pull a slot from Fiery Embrace to put in Haymaker and change the enhancements in Fire Blast so it has some accuracy enhancement.
By the way, I do understand about a farming build needing recharge. However, to me the question is *how much* do you need, given that you have eight attacks. -
I agree with Rangle's concern and will add a few of my own.
First of all, what is your goal for this build? You've slotted for defense bonuses, but you're all over the map on what kind, (typed vs. positional) and have completely underslotted Weave, which would do more for you than any set bonuses.
Also, your main Fire armors are underslotted. I'd recommend at least three slots, and if possible, four in FS, PS and Tough so they're adequately slotted for resistance as well as end reduction.
Are you actually going to use Kick or is it just a set mule? If you're using it as a set mule, why not use those slots to adequately slot Jab? I agree with Rangle about Hand Clap, and furthermore I think you'd get a lot more use out of Haymaker since as it stands you only have two ST attacks, one of which is unslotted.
Obliteration is a poor choice for Blazing Aura, since the set has less than 20% end reduction and a high-end toggle like BA should get a least 50-60% end reduction.
The Gaussian's set in Rage is a good pick for a positional defense build, but you're so far away from the soft-cap that those slots could and should be used for something else.
I also think you should shuffle your power order a bit so you can take Stamina by level 20. Because of its high end cost, BA is a good candidate for delaying until after Stamina.
Speaking of Stamina, 6-slotting Perf Shifter for the AoE bonus is worthwhile if you're near the soft-cap, but as it is you'd be better off using some of those slots elsewhere.
Here's what I would do with your build; I've retained as many of the purples as I could, and increased S/L/E/NE defense to around 25% while increasing your resist values and decreasing end consumption. Since I didn't change the slotting of the purples, I agree with Rangle that may be a problem in the future, so you may want to be sure to pick up the recovery accolades if you're going to stick with the purples.

Quote:I'll second this concern, especially because you have that Oblit set slotted in Lightning Field. 6-slotted Oblit has less than 20% end reduction, not enough for a .52 EPS toggle. The biggest thing I'd be concerned about is having enough recovery in between Energize being up and Power Sink's availability. I don't know ELA/ well enough to say whether you'll be running full steam or you'll be gasping for air. You've got great recharge on Power Sink so it "shouldn't" be a problem. Make sure you get the following four Accolades as they will help with your recovery and regen: Freedom Phalanx Reserve, Task Force Commander, Portal Jockey and The Atlas Medallion.
I'd recommend taking Tremor, moving the Oblits there, and using a set with more end reduction in Lightning Field. Eradication works well--and gives you a nice E/NE defense boost--as long as you pair 3-4 slots with 2 slots from another set for additional end reduction. -
Quote:You should consider getting the Kismet +Acc instead; despite the name, it provides an additional 6% ToHit, nearly as much as Tactics for Scrappers and Tanks. It more confirms what I suspected, but it's very detailed, thanks

It'll improve your HitChance a bit without costing a power slot or any endurance. (And Tactics is a fairly high-cost toggle.) -
I've bought two laptops and a number of components from Newegg, and have always been completely satisfied with their service. And given that Newegg seems to be the "go-to" site among regular posters in this forum, I don't think I'm alone in my opinion.
If you want to buy components to build it yourself, you'd be hard pressed to find a better place than Newegg. However, if you want a inexpensive gaming computer that you don't want to build yourself, I second the recommendation for cyberpowerpc. Newegg has some fine pre-builts, but you won't get anywhere near the kind of selection, or the ability to customize that you would get at cyberpower.
And although I haven't looked at desktop prices recently, I'm pretty sure that you could get good quality, gaming capable desktop there for under $1000. It might be more than that if you need a monitor, but as I said, I haven't checked prices recently.
It's worth a look, anyway. -
Hmm, Hide is pretty much a key power for Stalkers, and stealth is the signature ability for them. You may want to consider trying another AT if the way stealth is implemented in CoH bothers you that much.
-
The most efficient way to add positional defense is to slot attacks for defense bonuses. Most of your attacks are slotted with purples, which really limits what can be done to increase defense past where it is now. Are you willing to give up some of the purples and their bonuses to be able to soft-cap melee and ranged def?
-
I suspect that you (or your brother) would have huge endurance problems with this build. Your toggles are, if anything, overslotted for end reduction, but the four attacks (the largest component of endurance use) slotted with Obliteration have just over 15% end reduction. This is going to a problem particularly for Lightning Field, a .52 EPS toggle; you really, really want to put more end reduction in it--I'd recommend at least 50-60%.
You could do something like this instead; it has about the same amount of melee def as your build, but Lightning Field is slotted better. (If were up to me, I'd drop all those Titanium Coating sets even if the melee defense total was lower because I hate having toggles overslotted, but that's my quirk.) Please keep in mind that endurance could still be a problem with 3 attacks slotted with Oblit.

Quote:Another recommendation for ASUS...I just bought this 20" ASUS monitor from Newegg for $130 and I love it:I've been using a pair of Asus VE-245 24" monitors on my personal machine, one of them replaced a failed Samsung a couple months ago and the other replaced the other (but not failed yet) Samsung a couple days ago.
They're $250 at Best Buy, 1920x1080 resolution and look fantastic. If that's a bit rich for you (although from the looks of your new machine it doesn't look like price was a priority consideration) I also have an Asus VE-205 20" monitor that's basically a smaller copy of the 245 for around $150.
I really recommend dual monitors... it doesn't take any time at all to get used to having one program on one monitor while another is on the second.

Actually, it is possible to adjust stealth effects to a certain degree, if they are a primary/secondary powers and are modifiable at the tailor. I changed the look of Cloak of Darkness on my Dark tanker to look less like a cloud of dust, and it also made it look less transparent. Don't remember the exact name of the setting I chose, but it was something like "No Fade, No Pulse". Give that a try to see if it gives you more of the effect you want.
AFAIK, you cannot do this with pool stealth or stealth IOs, just primary and secondary powers. -
On a recent Tanker Tuesday the theme was beach wear. What I really wanted was a Hawaiian shirt, shorts, and flip-flops. Had to settle for the boxing shorts, tank top, and bare feet.
So I say YES! to more beach options. -
Yunalesca, in terms of the build you posted, one thing I noticed is that IMO you're going to want Mind Over Body earlier than level 30. It can wait until late teens, early 20s, but I wouldn't put it off past that. Also, keep in mind that because Quick Recovery gives even more of a recovery boost than Stamina, there's no need to rush to get Stamina that early.
I also think that Conserve Power is a wasted pick on a character that has both QR and Stamina. There are a lot of powers that would be more useful; Hasten, Build Up and CJ come to mind.
Here's the order I would use with your power picks and dropping Conserve Power for Hasten:

Quote:Sure, it's salvageable, but I think it really comes down to whether you'll find it enjoyable to play EM in its current incarnation. I still like playing my Invul/EM, but many older EM tankers do not.Well there is my question, is this toon salvageable at this current issue, and if so, could someone post a bad *** build for it
First, why don't you try playing your tank with the current slotting. A kick-*** build will make a lot more difference for the Invul side than the EM side; if you still enjoy playing EM let us know and we can make some recommendations. -
Quote:IOs can, and usually do, have more than one attribute. They all have a type, which tells you what sort of powers they can be slotted into. In this case, Decimation is a Ranged Damage IO and Gaussian's is a ToHit Buff set. They can also be procs or globals, or just regular single or multiple attribute IOs. They can also be unique, but that is a separate attribute from the other characteristics. So the fact that the two IOs you mentioned are ToHit Buff and Ranged types and procs has no bearing on whether they are unique or not, though as it turns out, both *are* unique in this case.Hello,
I'm sure it's a simple answer but I can't seem to find it anywhere that states it clearly.
Question #1:
I have Decimation: Chance for Build Up (currently unslotted)
I have Gaussians Synchronized Fire Control: Chance for Build Up (currently slotted under AIM)
I take from reading that the therm Unique means no more than 1 can be slotted. However, these are called something different and slotted under different categories. Or are they the same thing and only 1 thing can be slotted or they both can be be slotted and have 2 different effects?
No, the charactertistics of a proc have no direct relation to where they can be slotted. Unbreakable Constraint is a Hold set, so you can slot it in any power that has that attribute. (Check the power description, it will say what sets can be slotted in it.)Quote:Question #2:
Do Procs that create certain effects (ie Unbreakable Constraint: Chance for Smashing Damage) have to be slotted under powers that have those effects, in this case something with smashing damage? Or is the proc just an enhancement for extra type of damage or effect? -
Quote:I understand that, but IMO, the 15% recharge buff is simply not worth leaving half of your attacks underslotted. Making up for the fact that your attacks are underslotted for damage--and Icicles is completely *un*slotted for damage and accuracy--by using the attacks more often sounds like a huge waste of endurance to me. For instance, you could easily get both the max HP and the regen bonus in WM and CC--and insure that they're fully slotted for end reduction--by simply adding another slot rather than chasing more recharge bonuses.Well if you notice, the armors are slotted the way they are to gain Recharge buffs, and the attacks are slotted the way they are to gain defense buffs. I could take out 2 of the eradications and put some sciroccos in their to get rid of some recharge and boost the damage a little, but I prefer the Max HP over the regen buff. The damage isnt at ED cap on WM and CC but it recharges so quickly that it more than makes up for it.
BTW, I have absolutely no problem slotting attacks for defense bonuses, I do it on most of my melee characters. However, slotting for defense bonuses doesn't mean that you also have to leave them underslotted for critical attributes like accuracy, damage and end reduction. -
Well, IMO and I believe in the opinion of most veteran Ice tanks, not taking Chilling Embrace is a very bad idea. Not only is it a taunt aura, (and one of the best you can get) but the slows provides significant damage mitigation. You really, really should take it, and take it before level 20.
As for the build, honestly, it could use a lot of improvement. The armors are way overslotted--you rarely need more than 4 slots in a standard armor toggle--and several of the attacks are poorly slotted.
But in answer to the OP, right off hand I can't think of any secondaries I wouldn't recommend with Ice. As Mayhem suggests, the weapons are a good combo, but Fire and SS would work well too. Just pick a secondary that you want to try and go for it! -

Quote:Cloak of Darkness has an endurance cost of .26 EPS, exactly the same as most non-damage toggles, and half as much as Death Shroud and Cloak of Fear. The main Dark shields cost slightly less endurance, .21 EPS, but that's because those shields were specifically made less costly, not because CoD is particularly end hungry. Tough and Weave both cost .33 EPS, for example.Cloak of Darkness is a huge endurance hog and I found it beneficial to rely on gauntlet because of the targeted aggro generation. In the early levels I try to do what I can to maximize benefit per endurance.
CJ grants the same amount of immob protection as Cloak of Darkness and about half the defense for one tenth the endurance cost, plus it gives you some great combat mobility when paired with hurdle. I agree, CJ should have been taken before hurdle. Oversight on my part.
Another good point is the KB resist IOs. It'd be nice if you could buy one of those (probably Karma to slot in CJ).
So no, CoD is not a "huge endurance hog" by any objective criteria I can think of. It is, however, significantly more costly than CJ, but again that's more due to CJ's very low end cost than CoD being a high cost toggle.
But I do agree that if it's a matter of which should be taken early, CJ is the better choice. -
Well, it'll be a tight build, since you'll want to take everything from both sets except 1 or 2 powers, but SR is very easy to soft-cap. But unless you plan to invest a lot in sets, consider taking the Fighting Pool to make soft-capping that much easier.
All defense sets are pretty squishy in the early levels, but Mace has two early attacks (Jawbreaker and Clobber) that provide excellent damage mitigation, so be sure to pick those up.
Strategies for SR vary, though I prefer taking the toggles early and waiting until later for the passives. Do take the passives, though; they provide damage resistance in a crunch that is very valuable. You might also want to pick up Aid Self, though it won't be needed as much once you're able to soft-cap to all positions.
