Certainly didn't help with folks crashing during iTrials....

Quote:No it isn't. In several maps (Oranbega, Council, and Arachnos, though not all their maps) your mediporter has been "re-routed" to port you to their holding cells instead of to the hospital. In the game, the med teleporter is infallible. You're always saved. Doesn't mean the game fiction has to follow the same rules. Fictional characters don't pay subscription fees. It's okay to kill them.
Given that clearly both technology and magic can therefore override the mediporter on occasion, I don't find it strange or lame at all that there are stories based around that fact.
I LIKE it that they make an effort to explain some of the game mechanics in-character. It's a lot better then Some Other MMO About Singular Jewelry where you lose all your "morale" and are so demoralized that you are "defeated" until someone urges you on again... yet, once you are demoralized, you neither quake in a ball nor run away, but instead kneel on the ground amidst the battle... yeah. I like the mediporter. -

Quote:I'm confused... why don't you just team with her then? I've never had trouble soloing a Dom, but they work like gangbusters on a team, and there's people running scanners and tips at all hours usually.Big wide grin...try to solo an Electric/Ice Dom
Hmmm..right..instead of complaining about her anymore, I am going to make breakfast, drink two cups of coffee, and start tinkering with her build. Could be I put too many slots into the Electric/ and not enough into the /ice...and hmm..there is such a thing called Red Inspirations.... -

Me too! I'm always amazed when I snag what seems to me to be SUCH a good name that I can't believe it's available. And I only play on Virtue, so there's a bunch of other folks hunting those good names!

Quote:I DID say the leader was an ***. S/he really was, I've NEVER run with anyone so rude and aggressive so far. In fact, once we failed, this person felt the need to tell the team "thanks for nothing" before she quit. Just, wow. So ungracious, so nasty. But again, this is ONE leader and ONE failure out of about 25 at this point. And you've just made my point. If someone is shouting "THROW A GRENADE FFS!" then clearly someone on the team either doesn't know they have grenades (to check their temp powers) or they don't know where to throw it (highly possible). Possibly even both. My point is that something that is clear as day to a leader may not be (and probably isn't) to the team/league.
Just as much (in my opinion) to blame were the people who did NOT say "I have a grenade but I don't know what to do with it." Or "Where do I take this acid?" After the collection stage, the leader told everyone to give all their nades to a Defender who had no idea what to do with them (and said so.) But the leader was a total jerk about the fact no one was using the grenades, and that 3 portals remained open because no one used acids on them.
Several of us took the time to type in League "open your power window, look at the end of your temporary powers for Pacification Grenades or Acids, do you have one?" And NO ONE answered. The Defender didn't say anything after expressing confusion over being given grenades (and seriously, why would they go to a squishy?) and never used one, despite several of us telling him how or asking him to give them to us.
It was a total CF. The leader was an aggressive jerk, but the people who didn't know what they were doing would NOT take instruction, for some reason. Add to that, tanks were flying alone into Marauder and his pile of adds while the rest of the team was regrouping, then complaining they didn't get heals, and it was just a total mess. But there was PLENTY of blame to hand out to the leader and the new people both.
Quote:I don't know what it is but I rarely crash outside of iTrials. However, I crash pretty frequently in trials. Crashing right before I get the reward is the most annoying thing.
Quote:No it's not the players fault if they don't understand something. However it is their fault for not seeking assistance. I've been running trials on Virtue since they were released (both as a leader and a member of others trials) and I have never seen anyone ridiculed for saying "I've never done this trial before and could use some assistance". If I did see someone ridiculing another player for that I'd kick them immediately (if I were the league leader) and 1-star them to remind me not to team with them again. -
Quote:You know what? I ISN'T that hard. I did my first trials this week. I had NO IDEA what acids and grenades meant or where they were, or how they were used. And when the leader said "group 1 lab, group 2 wh," I had no idea what THAT meant. You make many of my points, I think that a failure of leadership is far more common (at least in my experience being on leagues and watching both leaders and players, etc.) than a failure of someone who's never done the trial. What exactly does, "Team 1 acids and Team 2 grenades!" mean to someone who's never run the trial? Exactly nothing. The doors aren't marked "acids" and "grenades," they are marked storage and labs, right? So is it really "stupid" or "moronic" for someone who's never done the trial not to know where to go or even what to do? Most leaders don't even bother telling new people that we run from container or crate to container or crate not killing anything along the way. They just assume everyone knows . . . somehow, by osmosis, maybe (newsflash: not everyone reads every word posted on the site, nor in the forums. In fact, I'd venture to say that most players never even hit the site at all, let alone hurry here to find out what to do in a trial). And then these "leaders" get frustrated when people who don't know . . . don't know. Who's really at fault?
The same thing goes with leaders who tell one team in BAF to hit the north path and the other two teams to hit the south path. Does someone who's never been on a BAF have any idea what this means? What the choke points are? How that differs from doors? That there even are doors? Or choke points? There is a lot of assumption on the part of leaders that goes a long way to their creating their own frustrations and falsely labeling perfectly intelligent (probably kind and lovely) people as idiots, morons, losers, et al.
Now, as to there being the type of player you describe who think they know the trials inside out and are confident that they could probably solo it, so they just do their own thing . . . well, hmph!, there's a word for those types, but it's not "moron."
So I checked what group I was in, clicked a name on my team and followed them. I watched what they did and healed where I could.
Next time, I knew where to go.
Even if you're a total noob and have NEVER done the thing before, it's NOT hard to follow the directions.
"Team 1 south." Ok, I'm in team one, I click the name of a teammate and go... south for like 10 feet. It's not that hard to figure out where the leader wants you when the other teams are STILL IN SIGHT.
I've had very good experiences being a noob on the trials this week. I had ONE failure total in probably 25 trials at this point, and it was a combination of a terrible, aggressive leader who was mean and didn't explain anything, just made demands that people didn't seem to know how to meet - and a clueless team where NO ONE would speak up when they clearly didn't understand what she meant by "THROW A GRENADE FFS!"
It's really not hard to either follow the directions by following the other 7 people doing the same thing, OR to just say "where would I find a grenade if I had one?" -
I got REALLY lucky today. Got a poor leader AND a load of poor listeners. I don't even know.
-
To be honest, I ran my first trials yesterday. Neither leader (lambda or BAF) took any sort of excessive time out to "guide the noobies," and we did warn them we were new. But they didn't really need to. The popup instructions do a good job of letting people know generally what's going on, and the leaders were right there with the specifics of "group 1 go here, group 2 go here," etc. We were told "no bombing" on the Lambda, and no one did.
We also had one BAF where one guy recruited the whole league, and then spent 5 minutes going "WHO WANTS THE STAR?!" until someone stepped up. There was no real leadership on that one... we didn't fail, but it was definitely messy and not a great experience. -
Do we have any idea if the Freedom store is going to be interfacing through the NCsoft store, or will be more like the one in which you must log into the game to buy character slots/rename tokens?
I only ask because you have to use your subscription credit card for the latter, but the NCsoft Store allows Paypal, which is where my "fun money" goes.... -
Quote:The veteran reward for that already exists, and the new one will probably work the same way (and the same way that "buy xp" works in the other 2 F2P games I have played) - you buy a "boost" that gives you double xp for a certain amount of time, or a certain number of bars. It'll basically be the same as patrol xp on demand.XP Boost sounds like sacrilege to me, in any way shape or form. The fact that such a thing will exist in any way to me foreshadows being able to fork over real life cash for XP at some point. I know it's not the same thing, and I'm being extreme, but it's definitely a step in that direction and it doesn't sit well with me. This is the first thing about COH Freedom that has rubbed me the wrong way.
Plus, leveling is SO quick and easy already if you want it to be, I can't imagine why it matters.
Quote:So...which archetypes are locked out for Free/Premium Players? Are Premium Players able to "buy" access to the rest of the archetypes (signified by the "+")?
Controllers, Masterminds, VEATs and HEATs will not be available to freebies. -
What the heck? That shot is NOT GC. No way. Those are Praetorian buildings.
If they're going to wreck our zone and make us start in it over and over, it better at least BE Galaxy, not some ridiculous Praetorian-wannabe version :| -
Here's my question: what about rewards we've earned but not claimed?
I've got about 15 unclaimed vet respecs on each of my characters. I don't claim them because (unless I'm wrong) they don't stack, I just use them as I need to tweak my builds.
Does this mean I'm going to lose access to all the available but unclaimed vet respecs? Because that's going to be very obnoxious. -
I agree - I can't imagine what benefit to the game there is in not allowing free players access to the IO system. I mean, what is the intention of that?

Haunt's Eidolon (D/D Def) - Alpha T1
Trillium (Emp/D Def) - alpha unlocked
TrilIium (Widow) - alpha unlocked
Alexis Summer (Claw/Regen Scrapper) - Alpha T1
Lauros (Fire/Kin Cont) - alpha unlocked
Opal of Amber (Mind/Storm Cont) - alpha unlocked
Puzzle Pook (TA/A Def) - alpha unlocked
Madelaine Dalby (Fire/Pain Corr) - alpha unlocked
Unlocking alpha and then building alpha stuff as shards drop in 50 missions and TFs. No interest in the trials, but I may end up doing them because my gaming partner has interest for his PB. *shrug* -
Quote:Pretty much this.Don't know why people are getting so worked up.
Looks indistinguishable from random teenage pop stars to me.
If it was anyone other than Black, I'd expect to hear this on the radio, and no one would give two flips about it. It's autotuned to heck, yeah, sure. So? It sounds like Glee. -

I've actually got an example, because I made a new character last night. (I'm really going to have to buy slots when 21 comes out... sigh.)
When I want to just try out a powerset, I usually just make another version of a character I already play. I tweak the colors and whatnot so that it appears consistent with other versions - is there any reason a Dark/Dark defender who already knows how to control dark energies can't learn to punch? Ok, Dark/Dark scrapper version!
But when I make a full blown new character, I have to have a seed idea and then choose powers as they are appropriate to the concept.
So last night, my husband and I are running One Good Spider, me on my kin/will scrapper and he on his fire/thermal corruptor. And he wonders aloud whether there's some sort of duty roster where heroes have to sign up when they go on duty, to let the Zig know to expect guys on fire - have an extinguisher handy! - for the next 8 hours or so. I said well, there's probably enough fire heroes out there that one more doesn't make a difference, they'd have to be prepared for anything.
But it occured to me that, holy crap, the teleport bay of the Zig must be the scariest, highest-stress workplace EVER. It's got to be a disaster preparedness infirmary, PLUS have armed guards constantly grappling down those who are strong enough to fight, while they try desperately not to let the dudes with third degree burns and swords through their bellies die.
...and then I had an idea for a character.
Seriously how messed would you be after working there for any length of time? You'd need to staff it with the Freedom Phalanx not to be losing employees left and right. Plus, on the job injuries would be rife. The place has to look like Mother Mayhem's map, but worse.
And I INSTANTLY got a picture of this character. She'd have to basically dress like a Crey medic, you'd be spattered with god knows what. But I knew I didn't want her to have a gun - I'm not a fan of the assault rifle powerset, it never "catches" me, and I already have a Dual Pistol and one of those is PLENTY.
I didn't want to call her "Nurse" or "Doctor" anything, but I wanted some name that would have a medical association. So of course, Florence Nightingale comes to mind. So I think "Black Nightengale," no, that will totally be taken, everything Black is taken. But I think Grey would be better anyway. And if Grey is taken, I'll try Gray. And if both those are gone then I'll run the color spectrum and tweak her costume as appropriate, but I really WANT grey for this character.
So I try "Grey Nightengale" and dang, my first choice is taken.
But wait, did I mispelled that word? I window out, check google. Yup, Nightingale is with an I, not an E. Well, surely the CORRECT spelling is taken, but I try anyway. And I got it.
So even though misspelled characters are usually created AFTER the original name is taken, not in this case!
And I knew I wanted to use /pain and be a corruptor, even though I already have a /pain character, because you'd have to be /Pain to work in the basement of the Zig and also that set is incredibly awesome. I've considered rerolling my Emp/Dark more than once, just because I like Pain better, but she's my original character and I can't do it.
But having found "Nightingale" as a name, I was able to settle on Sonics as my attack set, which I've never gotten to use before but always wanted to.
Tah dah! New character! She's sitting in Praetoria, I'm trying to decide if I actually want to level her through there (the idea to having worked for Mother Mayhem and then gone to work in the Zig after she got to Primal Earth intrigues me) or wait til 21 comes out and send her through the new tutorial. -
Quote:Yeah, I'm aware of that. When we did Save Black Panther with all the Malta Ambushes, we positioned the Thermal in the middle (because he was the consistent target) and put my defender in the back doorway and the PB/tank in the front doorway. It didn't matter - ambushes consistently ran over and ignored us to get to him.The most consistent of ambush targeting I've seen (anecdotally of course) is the one who's closest to the inital ambush. A bane to my stalkers, and ranged folks if they come in from behind- They're more inclined to attack the first target they run across over any other. That incudes Stalkers hanging back for an opportunity (since ambushes apparently ignore Hide, Stealth or anything else) or waiting for hide to kick back in.
From what I can tell, it's a matter of convenience over pattern. Attacking my Corrupter or Dom from behind, I can understand. Ignoring my MM's pets to attack my MM, I can almost forgive. I just really hate that they completely ignore Hide on Stalkers or stealth power in general on any characters.
I wouldn't have been saying this if it was just a one-off thing. When it was just my MM, I shrugged. But having played with my husband's thermal on a couple different occasions and noticing it on him too, this consistently, led me to post. It really seems like thermal shields are, at least in some cases, drawing aggro to the caster.
And it wasn't *just* ambushes. Any loose aggro in a pull went right for him/me, in both cases.
Quote:There was a thermal present for all three scenarios, it was just a different thermal for the first one vs the latter two. By "caster" she means "whichever thermal was with us and providing buffs at the time."
As for the /Thermal Mastermind:
MMs were designed as the "Tank" archetype for Redside, so they may have a higher threat modifier/multiplier/doohickey, I just don't recall what it is atm.
Having a team of MM, Stalker and Blaster it seems a safe bet that the Mastermind has the highest threat mod of the group, which is why it seems to be pulling ago, though why this would seem to end if thermal buffs were allowed to wear off is beyond me, given that heals and buffs aren't coded to generate any agro at all.
In the other situations, that entire reasoning wouldn't apply though, since it was a Thermal Corruptor.
OP, if this is an occurrence you can reliably reproduce or occurs regularly (where it can't simply be an issue of perception), definitely /bug report it. If not, it could just be a collection of unfortunate incidents summed up as "well that sucks." -
I can't see how anyone would say leveling to 50 in AE is an exploit, or in any way against the gameplay. After all, there's a LOADING TIP that advises you that it's an available option. I have a hard time believing the devs are against it, in that case. :P
-
Quote:It's not squishy characters over melee characters. I can't help but feel like you didn't actually read the OP.Murphy's Law of Combat: Your enemy will always attack where you're weakest.
More seriously I haven't noticed any specific tendency for ambushes to go for squishy characters over melee characters.
In the first example, it's a MM, Blaster and a Stalker. The MM is not squishier than the others.
In the second, it's a Corruptor, an Emp Defender, and a PB. Depending on what form the PB was in, the Corruptor was not the squishiest character, the Defender was (because I can't Fort myself, dangit.)
Only in the last example was it true that the Thermal was the squishiest character. -
For the caster?
My husband and I have both experienced this. At first, we thought it was just a fluke - my petless Demon/Thermal MM plays in a trio with my husband and our friend, a Stalker and a Blaster. Without fail, any ambushes target me, and anything that has insufficient damage done to it by either of the other characters aggs right to me. Aggravating, but since I chose not to take pets to take the brunt of the aggro, I kinda wrote off the fact that yeah, I die a lot on that character right now (she's 22, no IOs, etc)
My husband just started playing his Fire/Thermal Corruptor with the buddy and I on random duos. Tonight it was my Emp defender and a tri-form PB who was often in tank form. Again, without fail, ambushes targetted the Thermal, loose aggro went right to him, and the PB had to taunt a lot to keep him alive. This made One Good Spider not a lot of fun.
After the buddy logged, I got my Kin/Will scrapper (no taunt, but RTTC usually does a good job of gathering up aggro) and we did One Good Spider again because the scrapper needed her Hero Merit and the hubby needed the xp. Again, without fail, he got all the aggro from ambushes - to the point I was literally running around the map HURTING the mobs and they would continue to chase him. At one point, my fire shields wore off - and THEN the mobs suddenly noticed me.
Has anyone else noticed that Thermal seems to be Wi Flagged?
