It's so stupid. Everything about the way they did this has been unimaginably stupid. It's like they're being stupid on PURPOSE.

    Cut off a profitable game.

    Without notice.

    Without reasons given.

With a sizable and extremely loyal and vocal playerbase.

Fire a popular dev team and make that sizable and loyal playerbase not only feel their game was stolen from them, but their "friends/family" have been literally harmed by this action.

    Give no communication whatsoever.

Shaft one of their own studios' newest games - the week of its release! - by angering a huge chunk of vocal gamers.

    It's just mind-blowingly stupid. It's like a massive troll.
  2. I've been taking masses of screenshots since 2004. In fact, I have several CDs full, and have backed most of them up to Photobucket/cloud storage. I also have tons of RP scenes which were chatlogged and saved, and backed up on Google Docs.

They can take the game from me, but my characters will never die!
  3. My characters are mostly split between 2 RP groups that own, respectively, a large sailing vessel and an airship. Both those vessels are capable of dimensional travel, using a combination of magic and Portal tech.

When CoX goes down, they will sail away to parts and adventure unknown.

-OOCly, I'm going to park them all next to Back Alley Brawler. I'm only sad I can't park them in Galaxy City, where they were "born," but at least I can log them off next to their first trainer.

    No, wrong, ridiculous, stupid.

All this does is drive people AWAY from GW2. The Anet people are probably shaking their heads in disappointment over this. Not only does it focus the ire (undeservedly) on them from a bunch of grieving gamers (and gamers hold LONG grudges and are VERY vocal - hello NGE!) but it must hang over them like a Sword of Damocles that even if they're doing well and making money, NCSoft may simply pull the plug without notice.

This is the worst publicity that could hit in GW2's first week, and frankly NCSoft are stupid on SO many levels for doing it this way, not least of which is that their timing actually hurts GW2. If they wanted to "trick" people into moving to GW2, why would they do this in the first week instead of waiting for a bunch of gamers to buy the game to test it out, THEN dropping the bomb on CoH after GW2 had been up a couple months. Think a little instead of kneejerking your conspiracy theory.

Exactly. If you blame Anet for this, then you must blame Paragon as well. Both are development studios owned financially by NCSoft.

Doing this at this time was BAD for GW2, not good. GW2 has no sub fee, they just need you to buy the box. Pissing off a bunch of gamers before they even get a chance to buy it was the stupidest thing imaginable.

Oh, and as for the "coming pre-hacked" shot? The people who got hacked were stupid enough to either click a phishing email or to use the same password they use on other unsecure sites like fan forums and whatnot. It has nothing to do with Anet's security, just idiots who use "password123" as their password.

That was the charm for me, especially considering that in two of those three cases that I know of, the game itself was reasonably healthy. And in one of those cases, some really dirty tricks were involved in getting the game shut down.
Believe me, this is something that is certainly "keeping me up at night" regarding the future health of the game. OTOH, GW2 is selling far past expectations, and if NCsoft wants to kill something, it will probably be GW1.

I have NO IDEA why they wouldn't just consolidate the servers (it seemed like only Virtue and Freedom had a healthy population most nights) and leave it running. It CANNOT take that much resources to just let the server run stagnant, with a skeleton crew and no more new development. Heck, AC, DAOC are still running, and Warhammer's been running with nothing but a skeleton crew for years. The logic of doing this, and doing it in such a casual, cruel way really boggles me.

    Just NCSoft itself.
That's you, yes. But I have seen people directly blaming GW2 for this development, saying that GW2 was "losing money" (ridiculous) and so they had to pay for it with PS being shutdown, or that NCsoft shut down PS in order to "force" all their players to move to GW2.

I've been in GW2s beta for some time now, I love the game. I think it's a great game with some real innovations to it, some of which may in fact owe their inspiration to some of the unique features of COH. I am devastated over the loss of COH - I hate to see people taking their rage and grief out on the other game I love

    That's not what I'm saying.

I've seen a LOT of people posting "I was going to buy/try GW2 but now I won't" or "I bought GW2 and now I feel bad," and I urge people NOT to tar the innocent along with the guilty. If you want to play GW2, by all means DO give it a go. It's a fantastic game, and I certainly would like to see my CoH brethren happily ensconced in a new game, especially if it's one I play, where I might see them now and then.

Anet had nothing to do with the closure of Paragon, and in fact they are probably highly displeased at not only seeing another studio of great developers unceremoniously kicked to the curb, but at the timing of this, and the way the wrath of CoH players will undoubtedly turn on THEM, though GW2 had nothing to do with this.

(Oh forum logout bug. I will even miss YOU. No, not really. Well, sorta.)

After learning what exactly happened behind the scenes with Tabula Rasa's shutdown, and the abrupt death of City of Heroes here (several months' notice before shutdown aside), I am not willing to spend money to support games and developers under NCSoft's control, no matter how fun their games may be. It's just not worth it, and I don't feel like I should be obligated to continue playing other NCSoft titles just to support the other studios it owns.
And you know what? I wouldn't throw away my almost-8 years in CoH because of the way it ended.

If in 8 years, GW2 ends the same way, I will still have the memories of an amazing game and the friends I meet there. I'm not going to shoot myself in the foot and screw over what is probably the best development team out there, comparable to the Paragon team, just to piss off some suits in Korea who won't even notice.
  9. Way back in 2004, I joined an SG on Virtue to RP. Unfortunately, like many RP SGs/guilds, it was very cliquey. The game was pretty darn hard back then and I mostly ran defenders, so I was super squishy, and I could not get anyone to team with me. I was starting to run out of hope, since I couldn't play when my boyfriend wasn't around to team with.

Then one person in the SG said "oh, sure, I'll send you an invite!" He was a Dark/Dark scrapper, and sort of squishy himself, since this was long before stacking armors and he was constantly out of blue. He sidekicked me and we had a blast. We started RPing together, and eventually, made new duos together specifically to RP together.

When EQ2 came out, the whole SG left for it - including him. I was completely devastated. And then he came back - because he missed me.

We played WoW together for about 3 years (when TBC ruined it, but I digress...) and then LOTRO, some Warhammer, some DDO, some SWTOR. We're playing GW2 together now. It's been almost 8 years, and the teenager who was kind enough to RP and group with me is now a man graduated from college, but we still play together every single day. We've only met in person once, but aside from my husband, he's my best friend in the world.

We've populated whole worlds of RP together. And despite our forays elsewhere, CoH was always our home base, and we never strayed far for very long. Hearing it's shutting down is like a kick in the gut, like seeing the big old oak tree you built a treehouse with you best friend in getting chopped down. But I got an amazing friendship out of it, and I'll always treasure COH for that.
  10. I've been playing this game since i0. I can't believe it's going away... that's like finding out the neighborhood mean kid randomly killed your puppy.

However, I will not be boycotting NCSoft.

GW2 is a fantastic game. And ArenaNet no more deserves your scorn and disdain than Paragon does. These studios are owned by NCSoft, but they are NOT NCSoft. Blaming Anet for what NCSoft does is stupid. I'm sure that right now, Anet is banging their heads on the wall at what a stupid, utterly boneheaded move this is, and now it hurts THEM too.

My heart is breaking for CoH. I played over 30 characters, many to 50, in the almost 8 years I was here. It changed my life in many ways, and the way in which NCSoft has chosen to do this is not only stupid and senseless, but cruel.

Don't get me wrong, I love playing with other people, but it's too many, I feel I should be able to play and enjoy these with a smaller, more personal group.
    And this.

Everything else I could cope with if we could just have the Incarnate trials scale down to a normal-sized team. I LIKE teaming, I LIKE challenge. What I do not like is being crammed into a giant team and running around like one bug in a swarm. I'm not looking for a solo path, I'm looking for a "normal size team" path.

Actually, they're not. As someone who's played the endgame raids/instances/flashpoints/etc of most of the other games out there right now, CoX raids are not really casual.

The reason most "other games" restrict running those things to their own group/guild is that it's FAR less of a pain in the butt to do that than to PuG, not because you can't succeed with PuGs. I have run PuG raids in several other MMOs. It just adds to the "herding cats" annoyances of being a raidleader, and most raidleaders want to REDUCE that. Also, in most other games, loot is about a roll, and if you're only going to have a CHANCE at the loot, you want to make sure it's going to someone in your own guild. When the loot drops for everyone, that chauvinism is removed and PuGging becomes palatable.

Nonsense. There's a difference between being a supporter and an apologist.

Leaving game-breaking bugs in is what is going to enrage people. People were angry at a 6-hour downtime that was announced barely ahead of time - and frankly, they were right to be at this point, because 90% of what this patch introduced was a bunch of bugs that RUINED the game for many of us. I was fine with that 6 hour downtime when it happened - I'm not anymore, since apparently it was a 6-hour "destroy the game" patch.

This needs to be hotfixed, NOW.

This sort of stuff might be acceptable from a beta, or a brand-new released game. From a 7 year old veteran MMO? No. not even a little.

That would be pretty crappy... we were here for i12 and that was a long time ago.

Then, you also get to unlock any slots that you have purchased separately, or that came as part of a package (i.e Going Rogue). If your husband has not purchased any other slots, he should have FOUR slots available to him, two default slots and two more for having purchased Going Rogue.
He's a T9 vet who has all the veteran free slots that were offered, plus some bought slots. We only play on one server, so we expected him to just lose 10 of his total slots on Virtue. Instead he's lost 12 on Virtue and we can't figure out why.
  19. My husband's account just dropped to premium, and we're confused.

We were under the impression tokens were being awarded at the end of the billing cycle. He didn't get his last one.

We were under the impression that dropping to Premium loses you 10 character slots (basic VIP is 12 slots, Premiums get 2 free slots) in total, so if you'd bought or had vet rewards enough for, say, 36 characters on one server, you'd drop to 26. He lost 12. Why is that? Yes, he purchased GR before it became awarded per-VIP.

I play a Stormie, I suggested Null let us turn off knockback, and I meant it. I'm THRILLED about this bug on my Stormy, because I like to team, and knockdown is a thousand times better than KB - it puts people on the ground and not-shooting me without blasting them out of range of my meleers. When I throw people away from the tank, out of his aura and punchvoke, guess who gets that aggro? Me. If I put him on the ground, so he can't shoot but he's still in the tank's aggro? I'm DOWN WITH THAT!

I love the idea of being able to turn all my KB into KD with Null, and frankly I think if the meleers ask you to turn off your KB you should do it. Teaming is about what's good for the team, not just what's amusing (and it is!) to throw guys all over the place.

  24. Seriously, Zwill. We all love you, you've got the crappiest job - wielding the Player Crowd Control powerset and dancing around like a rodeo clown to distract us from the big bad. But this is an unacceptable build push. And the fact that the servers DO get taken down for exploit hotfixes, and there IS a fix for this existent, makes it completely unacceptable that it hasn't been hotfixed yet. Let alone that it made it live when it's been bugged over and over on Test.

I love this game, but this is something that makes it unplayable. Literally unplayable. When I have to fix my UI not just every time I log in, but when I zone? No. I won't do it.

This is a bad time for Paragon to have pushed something THIS effed up to the live servers. December's coming quick. If people decide to drop their subs now, they won't be back for a couple months at least because there's other new stuff coming out they can try out while this game scrambles to fix something GAME BREAKING that they deliberately pushed live.
