Do you have me on ignore, Sam? I explained earlier how your description of your ideal FF game is pretty much EXACTLY what GW2 is... I'm not even the only one who did.

Not that I think you should play GW2 - it's clear it's not a thing for you - but you pretty much skipped the 2 races that would have made you happiest, the Charr (steampunk iron-tech catmen) and Asura (magic-tech lizard-men.)

And while GW2 isn't particular story focused, it does go out of its' way to explain your motivation. And your motivation is, specifically, "I want to selflessly help others". Which grates on me endlessly.
    Err, not really?

Your motivation is "the Dragons are destroying the world and I want to find a way to fight them." It starts off smaller, with the influence in your home area, and gets bigger as you join one of the Three Orders and go after Zhaitan's minions. The reason can be up to you - AND like CoH, the storyline is utterly skippable. It doesn't have to mean/say anything about your character, you can just play the game and enjoy killing mobs and gathering crafting materials, if you want. In fact, people have hit max level doing nothing but crafting already.

    Really, NCSoft?

Yeah, one of my friends who's been reading all my media blitzing (and googling CoH for us to help us trend, bless his heart) asked me why the NCSoft site is still advertising sales and doesn't say anything about closing the game.
  3. The studio. I'd rather have a version of COH with a new, modern engine and graphics anyway. I don't give a crap if they're not allowed to use the name.
  4. Aw, crap. Now I'm crying. I've managed not to all this time.

Technical question - how did you get your UI to go away like that? I wasn't aware we could hide so much!

That's nearly $1000 they're not getting from me. Let's say half the people who signed the signature only had monthly subs and bought nothing from the store. That probably evens out those who had subs, those who had subs and spent extra, and those who were purely ftp. Those people probably will never buy NCSoft again. They're informed customers and angry.

    15,000 x $15 = $225,000

    Now we're talking real money.
Except they are already willing to write you off, and every subscriber currently in the game. So you're not really costing them anything they haven't already accepted.

Well, it's all high-tech cities and rayguns, so I thought that might work for him.

You don't see that too often, even in other Final Fantasy games, and ESPECIALLY in the Final Fantasy MMOs.
That's um... practically GW2. Seriously. Take a look at the Charr cities sometime. They're totally steampunk tech, and then there's the magic/tech of the Asura, which yes includes harnessing life-energies into gems to fuel golems.

Did you like SWTOR? That game sucked hard IMO, but it was certainly SF based.

Thank you, Arcanaville! My husband has dozens of characters on almost all servers and no way to turn his VIP back on to save them!

Frankly, it's sort of a relief on the eyes, for me anyway. Talos, Croatoa, PP and Eden were always my favorite zones visually. But it's not for everyone, and that's cool (and that's totally awesome.)

I think it's less the originality of the setting (though the lore story is quite interesting and gripping to me as a writer, I really enjoyed it - WoodenPotatoes on Youtube has quite a good series on the backstory and to me it's as good as many books I've enjoyed) than the "MMO Revolution" of the mechanics and playstyle involved.

And it certainly isn't trying to be WoW.

But I will definitely leave that for another thread.

I don't normally use namecalling, but I've seen too many people on this board acting as though I should just dust off my hands and say, "Oh well, off to invest money and emotion in another NCSoft game with no thought about how that game might end up in the dustbin in the exact same way."
I haven't seen any of that.

I've seen people say it's not PRODUCTIVE to be angry, but everyone I've seen has fully acknowledge that folks have a right to "feel their feels." I'm angry too. I'm so angry I can't even sleep at night. But I'm not using that anger to lash out against people in this community, or against people we still need favors from.

There has been some of the "look, this is how business works," posting, but I haven't personally seen anyone say "are you stupid?" though it's been implied in some posts, yes. Regardless, this IS how business works. The media campaign is trying to CHANGE how business feels it's ok to treat customers. The media campaign is the thing that's going to change minds, if anything is. Once you join a boycott - you're no longer a customer, and they can safely write you off.

NO ONE has said anyone is a traitor for NOT playing GW2. Not that I've seen. I've seen people ask folks please NOT to take out your rage on NCsoft on Anet, which needs support as much as PS did, but I've not seen ANYONE saying "EVERYONE GO PLAY GW2 OR YOU ARE BAD!" Seriously.

And you're very wrong if you think those of us who ARE playing GW2 aren't worried about it happening again. NCSoft does this. That's why it's SO IMPORTANT to change in their minds how acceptable it is to shutter a game with no notice. RIGHT NOW we need to be in the position of customers who are being treated poorly, because we are. And if we can actually get them to notice us, if we actually become too big to ignore, we can stop NCsoft from doing this to anyone else, too.

Do you think if SWG had kicked up THIS much fuss, that NCsoft might have had second thoughts about doing this to us? The more players are willing to stand up en masse and say DON'T DO THIS, the most gaming companies have to respect us and take us into account. We don't get respect by acting like spoiled children who can do nothing but call names and hurl invectives.

The people who are swearing at people within THIS community, calling them names, telling them they're "traitors" for playing GW2, telling them directly that they're stupid? Yeah, I call that being a dick.

Can't think of a more perfectly fitting song than My Way.

And now the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend I'll say it clear
I'll state my case of which I'm certain

    I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this
    I did it my way

    Regrets I've had a few
But then again too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption

    I planned each charted course
Each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this
    I did it my way

Yes there were times I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out, I faced it all
And I stood tall and did it my way

I've loved, I've laughed and cried
I've had my fill, my share of losing
    And now as tears subside
I find it all so amusing

To think I did all that
And may I say not in a shy way
Oh no, oh no, not me
    I did it my way

For what is a man what has he got
If not himself then he has not
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows
    And did it my way

    Yes it was my way

    Wait, so... seriously?

In your opinion, asking people to be reasonable and look at the facts is in poor taste, and attacking people who do so is fine?

    Seriously?

And I completely support anyone who chooses to do that. You're clearly thinking, you're calm about it, you're not frothing at the mouth and making a kneejerk reaction. It's completely reasonable to say "I'm not giving them any of my money because I don't trust them with it."

I'm in the same boat. I bought GW2 before NCSoft shut down COH, and bought one character slot on the same day. There's no sub fee for the game, and I have yet to buy anything in the microtransaction store except with in-game money (you can convert in-game coin to microtransaction gems - can you imagine if COH had an inf-to-Paragon Points converts?? The mind boggles!) So NCSoft has not gotten any more money from me, and whether it will does depend largely on how this whole thing goes down.

Do I feel awful for the Anet people? I really do. And later, I may rescind my decision not to give them money - they as a development studio have really impressed me with a level of conversation and care of their players that I've only seen anything like it here. But not right now.

I have not seen anyone defend NCSoft. I've seen people point out that it is a business decision - and it was, we may not understand WHY the **** they decided to do it in this pants-on-head-stupid way, because we weren't in their boardroom, but we can be assured that the NCsoft bosses are not out there twirling their mustaches and laughing. Does that make their actions any better for us, less stupid, less hurtful? No. No one has defended what they did, that I've seen.

I HAVE seen Joe outright attack people in THIS community who don't agree with him though.

It is a beautiful, beautifully crafted, game, and if you're looking to try it, you should give it a chance. Nevertheless, I don't think anyone should say that people here SHOULD try ANY new game. I just think they shouldn't write off Anet for NCSoft's sins. The game IS great, but I don't think CoH players should be looking for new homes yet - they should be adding to the media campaign to save this one.
