  1. Looking back over some articles on Hawken at RPS, there was some talk about single player.

There was also his admission in his third or fourth post that he filed the charge back before refunds were even mentioned because he wanted a larger refund than he assumed was going to be issued.
People tend to get defensive when it's pointed out that what they did was stupid. They may even privately agree in retrospect but publicly they are going to try to build some kind of plausible explanation as to why their action didn't seem stupid at the time.

I think his original explanation was that after three weeks of no info about refunds, coupled with all the "NCSoft is EBIL" talk, he panicked. He was also ignorant about what happens to an account the requested a charge back. Stories from players who said their SO didn't recognize the charge, disputed it and now their account got locked were few and far between so that's not surprising.

"Yeah, yeah, patience. How long will that take?"

So....they did obtain it but are shelving it? Or it wasn't part of the deal? I can't recall of Lucas solely owns Indy or if Spielberg and he were co-owners.
I think they Disney said that because it's not a clean ownership situation. Both Spielberg and Paramount have a stake in the Indy franchise.
  4. They haven't "worked with" a development studio since Cryptic, they now simply buy them outright or set up a studio themselves.
  5. Just heard about this game. A F2P with cash shop MMO in the flavor of Mechwarrior.

    Here's the game's info page.
  6. Well they bought the stock from the CEO at the beginning of June, around three weeks before the end of the quarter that reported the loss. If they felt deceived, I would blame the CEO who sold them the stock.

I think it's more along the lines of when Microsoft propped up Apple when Jobs came back.
  7. Well with ILM and Skywalker Sound Disney, will also have a lot of contract business from other studios as well.

And with four billion dollars, George can go off and retire in style.

Stupid continuous storm coverage, not going to able to see Castle tonight. Now that it's night we can't even watch stupid reporters getting swamped by surf or blown about like debris.

And two people getting banned over a two month period don't constitute a pattern of behaviour from NCSoft.
Yes, spamming every board here. And I agree, it's a few overly zealous people who got hit with a ban hammer because they refuse to restrain their "enthusiasm" or did something monumentally stupid.
  10. Yes, and to help create a SHIELD series for ABC.
  11. Like I said, there was that one guy just after the closing announcement that crosspost on every board, simply repeating the same links that TonyV had with an extra large savecoh sig graphic. When asked to refrain he got 8 ways indignant and decried that those people were traitors. If this was real life he would have been one asking for an inquisition to route out those who aren't of the "true faith".

Then one day all his posts vanished and he was never heard of again.

And about that severance pay prior to the announcement. Do that mean they already made the decision by the time the 2Q report came out? Or was that severance pay for another group of workers that was let go?
I believe the severance pay was from previous layoffs. It's common when one company buys another that duplicate front office jobs are let go. Areas like HR, accounting, marketing, sales, etc. It's also been reported that there's been general layoffs throughout Korea's game industry.

Now my point about our sales revenues is that it wasn't a lot, certainly not the numbers one would expect if the game was doing well. The comparison was just to illustrate how small in comparison to other expenses.

As others including myself have mentioned. The game may simply be a casualty of the decision to close down Paragon Studios. Sure they might have been able to keep the game hobbling along but without new content for subscribers and the cash shop, revenues would likely have plummeted over the next year and they would have to close it then.

I've also stated in the past that I'm sure at least Brian, Posi, War Witch and whoever else who was high up in the food chain at Paragon Studios knew something was coming, I bet they were hoping for just a major staff reduction for another year of life. It may have been a surprise to others at Paragon but as Nick Fury said in The Avengers; "Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on." No reason to tell us about their concerns, no reason not to hard sell the features in Issue 24 or not discuss future issues, costumes and power sets. News about a possible downsizing would have the same effect as server consolidation, players would start leaving which would reduce the game's revenues even more and employee morale and productivity would likely be negatively affected.
  13. NCSoft through the announcement from Paragon Studio only used the "realignment" statement as their reason for shutting down the game. They made no other statement as to the reason for the shutdown.

In NCSoft's slide show about 2Q 2012, which came out several weeks before the closure announcement, they listed on page 6 the following reasons as to why their costs shot up in 2Q.
    • Labor cost temporarily surged 27% QoQ due to one-off severance pay.
    • Royalty expense went up 35% QoQ reflecting full quarter impact from ‘Ntreev’ consolidation as opposed to 1 month impact in 1Q.
    • Box production fee also rose due to AION box sales in Japan.
    • Marketing expense increased 112% QoQ with marketing activities for B&S launch in June.
    • D&A expanded 28% QoQ recognizing full quarter amortization related to ‘Ntreev’.
QoQ means quarter over quarter, that is from 1Q to 2Q. D&A is Depreciation and Amortization.

I hate percentages, it can hide the real costs. Now overall, 2Q costs were up 27,030 million KrW. The labor costs were up 19,638; royalty expense up 1,106; box production fee up 1,011; marketing expense up 3,604; D&A up 2,532. There were some costs that went down as well as a more favorable kick from other income/expense that brought the total increase to the 27,030. Problem was sales revenues were only up 5,638 and the previous quarter's operating profit was only 13,749. Add that all together and voila, quarterly loss in operating profits. In comparison, CoH only had sale revenues of 2,855 in 2Q.

Yes they increased their marketing expenses, to market Blade & Soul in Korea, by an amount that was greater than the revenue CoH had that quarter. Our sales earnings weren't even enough to fund an ad campaign in Korea. This is from a company that spends only 3% of their sales revenues in marketing, which is pretty darn low for a game company.

I can't remember the exact wording, but if I recall correctly, while NCsoft owns the property of Guild Wars (and Guild Wars 2), they do NOT own ArenaNet. So while NCsoft could one day shut down Guild Wars, they can't close the studio - and ArenaNet has the option to buy the game (and presumably all it entails) away from NCsoft should it happen. How they'd raise the funds, I don't know, but I gather they've been in consistent contact with NCsoft about it as an option.

Unlike the case with Paragon, where NCsoft owned both, and shut them both down simultaneously.

(And no, I didn't get the job - I did manage a damn good interview, but they told me at the time I was more than overqualified for the job, and they wished they had a position where I could REALLY use my strengths. Oh, well.)

Well ArenaNet own website and NCSoft's investor reports disagree with the assertion that NCSoft doesn't own ArenaNet.

    ArenaNet - About Us
NCSoft IR, Q2 2012 earning releases - look on page 2 with the note on subsidiaries.

However they could operate with very little interference from their parent. Also as a full blown subsidiary they may be a lot more difficult to simply shutter than a development studio under the control of a subsidiary like Paragon was or they may have an out clause when they sold themselves to NCSoft.

I was surprised by the number of people buying ice cream. I guessing they are secretly hoping for a power failure so they have an excuse to gorge. I'm pretty sure plain old water ice would be better to pack a freezer with.

D cells. Who would have thought that they can be used as an alternate currency? Most people were betting on gold. Pffft! You can't power a flashlight, radio or LED lantern with gold.

I was at my local market before closing today. For some reason they were completely out of Kraft Italian dressing. Not something I would have thought they would be a run on.

If you honestly think Massively or Joystiq are going to state such things in an article you are severely misinformed. None of the mainstream gaming media outlets are going to say such things...sorry to burst your bubble but they aren't into promoting/publishing hate...they are into promoting games. If you think a few hundred people on twitter yelling @NCSoft lolwildstar is going to be an effective smear campaign...I point you to the success of a lil hashtag known as: #savecoh and remind you November 30, 2012 is getting closer every day.

    Reality check.
I disagree. I would imagine Massively will mention it, just don't expect it to be the lead. They may work it in while discussing features and compare them to the "now closed City of Heroes".

  21. If the game isn't the foreground app (also called focus), it's priority is dropped to below normal. This is normal. Since you have the windows task manager up, the task manager is the foreground app and therefore the game drops to below normal.

If you play the game full screen, you can set the task manager in options to be "always on top" and when you go click on the game you will see it's priority go to normal in the task manager. Click on the task manager or any other app, you'll see the game's priority change back to below normal. If you play the game in a window you can simply arrange the windows to observe the task manager.

Again, changing priority from normal to below normal when the game no longer has focus is as designed. It was something Microsoft recommends when an app, like a 3D game, that continuously uses a large chunk of CPU time. It helps the OS to keep everything else running okay.
  22. But will people remember when it does come out?

Yes, but they aren't loyal customers. If some business in town closes that you never been to, do you care? I'm sure their regulars are upset, especially if it was the only one in town that catered to them and you may overhear how they are lamenting about it while shopping at the market but it didn't affect you.

NCSoft is just one logo on the box. ArenaNet is the logo people may be more aware of and don't realize that ArenaNet is 100% owned by NCSoft and think NCSoft is simply just a publisher. So they won't make that connection either.

Which is why they've invested in GW2, since GW sold so well and the new Blade & Soul.

Yes I was one that liked the earlier screenshots of the game when it was in development. The locations were beautiful and the idea of wire style Kung Fu moves and fighting excited me. Then as more and more info about the game came out, the less I liked it. I'm not looking for a game that requires great reflexes to play.

As for the female character models, well lets say I don't like anime series when the first adjective you can think of to describe it as "fanservice". I watched a video someone posted going over all the female character models that are available in the creator and it resembled leafing through a Victoria Secret's catalog since they all appear to be wearing gossamer draped lingerie. That now nearly all the screenshots advertising the game include panty shots of the female characters. The breast physics on display as you spin the character around in the creator or even when your character simply stops from walking is a tad excessive.

However boobies and ultra violence do sell in NA. And sadly a lot of the male target audience will eat the look of this game up. Now whether they stay subscribed is a different story. Unsure what income model NCSoft is planning on for it's release in NA. It might do okay if it's like GW2, buy the game plus cash shop.

As for WoW, only naive investors still believe a new MMO could get WoW numbers. Today is a different time from 2004. There are more titles, less money and even more choices to split our discretionary time. It would be like someone wanting a new TV show to get 1980 viewership.
