  1. As Fleet says, unless you are using the GR DVD for the install, nearly 95% of the game files have changed, even from the Architect Edition (of the 3.62GB of pigg files, only 200MB are the same since the AE release).
  2. OK, single core, Athlon 64 core but with only 128K L2 cache, single channel DDR-400 memory.
    1GB of RAM
AGP 7600GS, slightly better than a 6600GT, Dx9 hardware (no universal shader cluster).

I would say 15-30fps is very good with that hardware.

/showfps 1 will display the current framerate along the top right side of the screen.
/showfps 0 will turn it off

CoHHelper is a utility that will create a report that can be pasted into a post that includes a list of major hardware, driver info and game settings. No more twenty questions and with knowledge of your game settings, may be able to recommend changes to improve performance. The utility requires Microsoft .Net 2.0 framework to be installed. If you don't already have it, there is a link of the CoHHelper page to download it from Microsoft.

HiJackThis is a utility that will list all software and services running on your computer. Post a copy of it's output as well because with only 1GB of memory, you should halt as much miscellaneous programs as possible so the memory they use can be used by the game.

    Paragon Wiki: Definitions

In the case of Psi/Em it's shorthand for primary/secondary powersets. I'm guessing Psychic Blast/Energy or Electrical Manipulation on a Blaster. The problem is today their is a lot more powerset combos than the early days so sometimes people forget that simple abbreviations of old are now ambiguous today.
  6. It's an OK list of parts.

You still need a copy of the Win 7 64-bit ($100).

The Seagate HD, the 7200.11 series was known for less than stellar reliability.

The HD 5830 video card is alright but the nVidia GTX 460 is similarly priced and is much faster. Downside is it negates the Crossfire multiple video card feature of that motherboard.

As others have pointed out, this game doesn't take advantage of more than two cores so 6 cores isn't a plus. Also the fastest (3.4GHz) Phenom II quad is cheaper and faster per core than that hex core (2.8GHz).

Do you really need a full size tower case and do you like red? The black, windowless version of that case lists for $20 less. It's "baby" brother, also windowless and black, with 2 fewer DVD drive openings but the same number of internal HD bays is $60 less.

And the CPU cooler is a bit of overkill if you aren't going to try to overclock the snot out of the CPU, which would be limited by the rather basic DDR3-1333 Cas 9 memory.

Like I said, it's an OK list of parts.

So I tweaked the list a bit and got this.

    • Added the OS
    • Went with smaller 1GB but better rated/performing Samsung F3 hard drive
    • Factory OC GTX 460 768MB
    • Phenom II X4 965
    • Mid-tower, windowless black HAF-922 case from the red HAF-932 full tower
    • Dropped the 3rd party CPU cooler
$74 cheaper before adding the OS.
  7. When the devs announced UM they said the 9800GT (8800GT for all practical purposes) was OK for minimum UM settings.

Second, and I see this a lot, UM settings use the World Detail Setting for shadows and reflection distances so if you were use to setting it to 200% you need to cut that back down to 100% and then tweak it till you are satisfied.

Well Mastermind is one of the more if not the most complicated of the starting ten archetypes in the game. Yes, you can be an army of one but between your normal attacks, buff/debuffs and ordering your henchmen about is a lot more complex than a "simple" scrapper/brute/blaster/tanker.

  12. Saw it this evening. Loved it from the 8-bit midi Universal fanfare to the little Scott Pilgrim avatar punching out the "The End" at the end of the credits.

Ninja Ninja Revolution was brilliant. The fights were awesome, much better than some of the up close/quick edit fights from other movies. Ramona's and Roxy's fight was epic (loved Roxy's "Ivy" Sword/Whip/Belt and Ramona's hammer from hammerspace).

Now I have to read the comic.
  13. To be clear, the melt face off comment is about performance and not heat. The HD 5850 is significantly faster than the HD 4870, which was also their $300 card when it was introduced a little over two years ago (the HD 5850 is not quite a year old).

Well ATI does have a tendency to run the fans slower for reduced noise and let the temps get up there so yes there is a reason for Asus's marketing point about cooler than the original fan/heatsink.
  14. Welcome to the club.

    Paragon Wiki is your friend.

You level fairly quickly at low level with a new power selection every even level, two enhancement slots every odd. Find a trainer to level up to pick additional powers and assign enhancement slots.

You can always tweak your costume later at a tailor and later on you can get additional costume slots.

Certain archetypes (classes in other games) lend more to preferred play styles. Scrappers, Tankers and Brutes are the melee classes, Blasters and Corruptors are more range/AoE. Stalkers are melee-ish, more hit fast, run away until hidden again. Masterminds send in their lackeys to dole out and take punishment while supporting them from the rear. Dominators, Defenders and Controllers tend to be more team support.

However, and I need to make these points, all of them are soloable and none are required for a team. It's just that some can mow down critters faster than others (thus leveling quicker) or require you to control them more than mashing the various attack powers.

Also the goal isn't getting to the level cap quickly. There really isn't anything special content at 50 waiting for you, yet, and plenty of content at all levels.
  15. The HD 4870 is a bit faster than HD 5770. It's also hotter and uses more power.

The 4870 is inexpensive now because the HD 58xx series melts it's face off faster than a Nazi trying to call God so nobody makes it anymore and everyone is trying to sell off their remaining inventory, cheap. The downside as je_saist points out is it's only a Dx10.1/OGL 3 card and not the new hot and sexy Dx11/OGL 4.

So, for price and performance, the HD 4870 beats the HD 5770. Downside is lack of Dx11 support and vanishing inventory.

    New cpu and mb

Well this is a zombie thread, as a warning this may be locked soon depending if the mods notice it's resurrection.

    • CPU's fine.
    • Arctic Silver is still one of the best.
    • CoolerMaster V8 is nice, while on sale with rebate. Only warning with 3rd party heatsinks is make sure you have the headroom in the case for it (161mm/6.33" tall).
    • Yes, 64-bit Windows 7 is a good idea because when system memory plus video card memory is over 4GB on a 32-bit OS, it's system memory that loses.
    • Socket 1366 systems really prefer their memory sticks in threes, not twos. So either 3GB or 6GB are options.
    • The motherboard is a bit pricey when not on sale with rebate. Video card slot layout not ideal for triple SLi with double wide video cards, if you were ever considering that extreme.
    TL;DR version
Memory should be in sets of three sticks. 64-bit OS is a good thing when you have a lot of system memory.
  17. Yes but you can choose not to post pointless articles. At least the HP pics appear to be stills from the movie and not just props. Editorial control.
  18. Maybe romcom is to strong of a definition for a movie that's difficult to to peg in one or two genres. Rotten Tomatoes list it as "Action & Adventure, Romance, Comedy". Metacritic tosses Fantasy into that list.

That's another thing The Expendables had going for it, it's very definable genre wise. People going to see it knew that it's a bullet/explosion fest that's as lite on plot as your basic FPS.
  19. Also make sure your graphics driver is updated to the latest version.

As you have said, in 7 other posts within the last 4 hours in every thread discussing this topic.

The Devs don't read the tech/bug board, often, it's meant for players assisting players and players warning players about problems. You want to register a complaint, /bug it, PM theOcho or Avatea and they can pass on the concern.

What's better, a front page topic with lots of individuals confirming a problem or one that's simply the most recent of five identical topics with only a handful of posts?
  21. Nobody said The Expendables is for idiots. What was said is the argument that The Expendables is better simply because it made more money is idiotic. All it means is that it was more popular.

The Expendables is an action flick. So basically guys from puberty up is their targeted demographic. Plus it has just about every action star from the 80s and 90s with the exception of Chuck Norris so that also helps draw the older demographic. Plus the audience knew what they were getting upfront.

Scott Pilgram is a 20 something romcom steeped in the influence of classic video games and anime/manga tropes. So first being a romcom is going to dissuade guys in general if given a choice between that and an action flick. Then familiarity with anime/manga tropes skews the demographic younger plus there are some people who simply dislike anything related to anime/manga. Finally you have those who can't stand the lead actor probably because he keeps getting the good looking cute girl in all his films. Guess what, that just simply makes him the Anthony Michael Hall of this generation.

So it's not surprising The Expendables beat it this weekend almost 3:1 on a per theater basis, not really.
