Hey guys.
Sorry for not posting this in the Tank or Brute forums but I wanted to get a scrappy point of view on this.
I just hit lvl 50 on my eighth Scrapper last night and I want to try something a tiny bit different...for me anyways.
I want to make either a SD/SS Tank or SS/SD Brute. My question is simple: Which one feels more "scrappy?" I would assume the obvious answer would be the Brute but...*shrug*
The idea of fully saturated AAO, Rage and a full Fury bar just sounds so good to me BUT I've never played a Brute and I've only played one Tank before.
I've recently discovered the joys of AOE carnage (FM/SD and ELM/SD!!!!) so I'm excited to see what kind of responses I get.
Thanks! -

Yikes! Doesn't it cost a boat-load to go positional on a /WP? Of course, I'm familiar with your work and I'm sure you're juuuuuuust fine.

Hello all.
I'm working on a little PVE project and need some advice.
I'm making a Rad/NRG/Elec blaster...more of a blapper really...if the distinction matters.) I'm going for a theme here and I want to pack as much defense on him as I can while attempting to maintain his endurance...if possible.
My question is what type of defense should a blaster focus on? Typed or Positional? I'm guessing typed. I usally play scrappers so this is kinda new for me. I actually have a few blasters but this is the first time I've really tried to put any functional thought into one.
Here's a very loose version of the build that I'm aiming for without the slots. I'm skipping all of the AOE's in the primary in favor of a balance betwen melee and ranged ST attacks. The order is not necessarily the final order that powers will be chosen in either. Any power selection or slotting advice would be greatly appreciated.
I will probably only spend around 500 - 800 million on this toon and that is a ways off still.
Thanks in advance.

Quote:Again, I understand all of that but some of what you're saying doesn't make any sense. What doesn't make sense?
You have more powers, the same amount of slots as you've always had.
That's called a buff! Just pick powers you don't need to invest slots into heavily.
OR! You can find new ways to slot powers. Not all powers need 6 slots, even if you were slotting them 6 slots for set bonuses.
Want an extra slot, always removing the procs from attacks.
Frakenslotting, perhaps?
Not all powers need 6 slots, even if I'm slotting the for set bonuses? Well, it sure does if by removing that 6th slot it's going to drop me below softcap on a /SR. Sure, I might be able to make up for it on another power but that's not the point I was originally trying to make.
Everyone keeps saying "what don't you get????" but I can't help but wonder if everyone would be complaining if we did have a few extra slots to work with.
All good...either way, it's going to be a fun issue and we'll all get to try some new and fun things...right? -
Quote:Disclaimer - Most of what I'm talking about is under the assumption of respecing a Lvl 50 toon and not wanting to change my slotting in Stamina primarily.I have assault on over half of my characters and I have never placed more than the free slot in it. If you take assault, it will work exactly the same for you as it will for the vast majority of people who have that particular power. Same with a self rez or temp tolerance on a FA or recall ally or superjump (and really CJ for a huge number of characters never goes beyond that initial slot).
I understand what you're saying. All I'm saying is that if I have a tight build already where end management is just barely hanging on and I add something else to drain yet more end, it would be nice to have some more slots to help balance things out.
Or, it would be nice to put more than one slot in a power like Aid Self on a lvl 50 toon that has more HP so it would actually be effective without having to sacrifice slots in the existing build. From that point of view, it's not "exactly the same as the vast majority of people who have that particular power" because none of us have had access to more powers like this before. I realize that I don't HAVE to take any additional powers to drain anything.
Hey, it's still a win for us and I'm not complaining...just thinking out loud here...we get to take some new, free stuff and that's always cool. I think I19 is gonna be great and I'm looking forward to messing around with my existing builds. There's a bunch of stuff in the power pools that I've never taken simply because there was no room.
...sure we be cooler with a few additional slots though...heh... -
Quote:No it's like they are building a bigger engine for free but you are complaining that you don't also get free leather upholstery. Your example doesn't fit because there's nothing that costs you anything at all to be compensated for.
So, you're saying that if I should choose to run Assault or anything else that costs endurance to run on top of my existing build...that qualifies as "nothing that costs you anything at all to be compensated for?" I have to disagree.
I don't mean to argue with you...I really am just trying to understand your logic here. I feel that PuceNonagon's positive spin on the situation is a really good point of view to go with here and I will subscribe to that line of thinking. We are getting something for free and that's cool with me.
I just still think it's kind of unfortunate that we won't be able to enhance these new choices to a more functional degree. Not that slotting more LOTG's (for example) is a bad thing! -
Quote:Positive spin that makes sense. Thank you.I see what you mean, but I don't think of it as a better engine; I think of it as getting nicer seats, a rack for your surfboards, and some new shiny rims, little things you have wanted all along but couldn't quite afford with so many more important things out there.
All of my toons are going to get to do things they couldn't before... for nothing. That's all good in my book. -
Quote:Exactly. Why would you free up those slots in i19, but you wouldn't before? Your toons have the same need for regen and recovery as they did before.
Most of my builds are pretty tight as it is and while I'm really excited about taking powers that I've always skipped before, it's really frustrating that I won't be able to do much with them.
It's like they built a bigger engine for the car but they're not increasing the horse power to compensate for the increased weight...ya know? ...ok, not my best analogy but STILL...you get the point............... -
I just finished digging around in the thread for clarification about the I19 changes for the Fitness pool trying to find an answer to my question...which I did not.
I'd rather ask you guys. Sorry.
So, if we're getting the Fitness pool...which means that we'll be able to choose more powers now...and nearly everyone (NEARLY) selects AND slots something from the Fitness pool...
...are we not going to receive additional slots? I can't make sense of that. I understand that they will work similar to how Sprint and Brawl work (inherent/slot) but...this just doesn't sit right with me since we'll have more powers and less (or the same depending on point of view) amount of slots to work with.
Can someone clarify this please? I'm sure I'm just not finding the right info or somthing... -
Quote:Hi there InUse. Glad to hear you're having fun with the Katana! I have three of them and now you're making me want to make a fourth...I actually blame Werner!Quick question. I was watching some videos and noticed you can monitor certain stats. Right now I have the whole window open and have to scroll up and down to look between my defense and resist powers.
Can someone point me in the right direction to select the ones I want to see.
Thanks.)
As for monitoring stats, just right click on the stat that you would like to monitor and follow the options. You can monitor up to 10 stats at once. After you get them into the montoring field, you can right click on them again to move them up or down so that you can put them in any order you choose. Hope this helps! -
Quote:Thanks Gaidin! Here's an I19 Kat/SR I made someone, no purples or PvP IOs. It might give you some ideas. The guy I made it for wanted LBE for thematic reasons, but you could replace it with Energy Torrent instead.

Sadly, the only accolade I have is the Atlas Medallion. I guess I'll have to start going for the others now. You've actually given me a few ideas with that build. Now we just need I19 to hurry up and get here!!!!
Did you take Flashing Steel over SOTW so you could get that IO set bonus?
I was thinking I might switch FS to SOTW, 5 slot Crushing Impact (removing one slot) so I can get some more recharge, switch LBE to ET and then add that extra slot there and 5 slot Posi's Blast for even more recharge. Not sure what I'll be losing though...I'll try it tonight. -
-
Well, I've decided to just go ahead and make both a Spines/FA and a FM/SD and then decide which one is gonna get the money around level 30 or so.
I made the Spines/Fire last night. I'm with you about Spines, Werner. I've just never liked Spines for some reason...but I have to admit I was liking the AOE as I played him last night. I screwed up and took the first attack (forget what it's called) which seems like a lot of animation for such little damage. He just kinda flails his arms about. Of course, people say the same thing about 1000 Cuts on Dual Blades and I LOVE that one....go figure.
I'll make the FM/SD tonight...gonna make a crazy, fire-wielding Dwarf! Too bad there's no flaming Battle Axe.
MutantX 7 - Thanks a lot for the build help! I think I just needed something to shoot for...ya know? Question though: Did you take all of the /SD powers just to fit in the IO sets or are they all required to make the set complete?
Werner - Yes!...Katana is my fav set in the game. I wanna make another one!)
-
I really just figured that I was not looking in the right place. I've been playing for over 2 years (with a 6 month break...stoooopid video card) and I've only had 4 purple drops.
I'll have to take another look at Tough and see if I can pull some slots from somewhere. I really hate using Stupefy in Boxing (I know it's just a set mule but it feels like such a waste to me for some reason) but I like the bonus numbers that it provides...eh...it was affordable at the time. -
Quote:I'm after a pretty solid mix of DPS and survivability. I have Tough with the Steadfast +3 in it and I'm wondering if I should slot it differently since I'm getting more end drain off of it than my other toggles. If you're after DPS, then yes, recharge. If you're after survivability, probably hit points, then regeneration. Resistance too, but not much from sets since the values are so small - just grab Tough, and if you're rich and spendy, the Shield Wall +3% resist.
I'm trying to find a way to get my end to balance out but every time I try to mess with my build I sacrifice too much recharge and damage which I really don't want to do.
I originally took Energy Torrent for thematic reasons plus I like the recharge bonus I have in there but lately....I'm thinking I might drop it and just focus on performance.
I really need to save some money and starting going for purples...which reminds me: Where is a good place to go purple hunting? Any suggestions? -
Quote:I must be using the wrong chain on my Kat/SR?If that's the case, WP will only need enough recharge for the standard katana chain (GD - GC - SD - GC - DA). Beyond that, you're not really gaining anything from having more recharge.
SR, on the other hand, can cram enough recharge in for the optimal chain (GD - GC - SD - GC) without making any serious sacrifices to the rest of the build.
I don't actually know the recharge values off the top of my head for those chains, unfortunately...
I run GC (Achilles Proc and quicker activation time than the other two), - SD (Knock 'em up) - GD (Hit 'em hard while on the ground) - rinse and repeat. Of course, I don't have enough recharge unless hasten is up but it seemed to make sense. When it connects, they never even get a shot off (maaaaaaybe one at first but /SR handles that most of the time) and I kill most things in two - three hits.
I've been out of the game for awhile so I'll take a stab (oh geez) at those chains tonight. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong lol -
Quote:ARgh! Sorry 'bout that...I forgot to mention that they are all Katana. I skipped DA on my Kat/SR since I was able to softcap w/out having to use it.largely depends on the primary, but with just the secondary, /sr needs obviously positional defense, then +hp and +regen (and +recov, to a point).
/sr and /wp don't benefit from recharge themselves, but the primary largely will.
/wp needs typed defense, hp, and regen. It should be ok on recovery for the most part.
/regen doesn't need hp at all. or regen. It needs recharge and defense (typically positional), and also doesn't require recovery.
I also have a DB/WP that I'm about to start upgrading. All are lvl 50. -
Instead of asking for builds and such I wanted to get a "priority list" of what to focus on for these secondaries.
/SR - Postional Def, Recharge, Regen?
/WP - Typed Def, HP, Regen, Rech?
/Regen - HP, Rech, Regen? Should Position or Typed Def be focused on?
Please correct my list. Thanks. -
Ok, after looking around some more I've determined that there's just no way I can make an effective /SD at this time.
So now I'm down to either Spines/FA or FM/FA. Which one would be more cost effective? I'm guessing FM/FA for my amount of cash and playstyle.
I'm a huge Katana fan (3 of 'em) so I like to get in and stab things 1 - 3 times 'till they die...not sure if that helps since we're talking about AOE here but........
Any more words of wisdom guys? Advice on skippable powers would be appreciated as well. -
Quote:Thanks for the info!!!!The combo you pick will come down to a matter of play style, but all the ones you listed will work.
Elec and Fire/SD provide an excellent mix of damage and survivability, but Shield really shines if you can invest in it. On just SOs and basic IOs I found it to be OK but nothing spectacular. 500 million is enough to do some very nice things for one, though. I'd suggest looking at Fury Flechette's guide to Electric/Shield and Fire/Shield for any budget.
Spines/Dark is a classic Scrapper farmer, proven very capable time and time again. For bare minimum investment I think it really shines, and scales up as you pump money into it. Fire Armor is going to do more damage, but wont be as survivable out of the box. If this character is specifically for farming then survivability isn't a concern; you can just pick an enemy group that minimizes risk. If you plan on doing more than just farming with the character then it's something to consider. That said, Fire Armor can be a beast in its own right, especially when heavily IO'd.
Electric Armor is also a viable secondary for farming. It comes with a damage aura, end management tools, a nice heal, and +Recharge.
Overall, Fire/Shield is my personal favorite. Melting faces is fun, but smashing faces and then melting them is even better.
I think I'm sold on Fire as the primary. The toon won't just be a farmer...I'd just like for him to be capable of putting down mobs as quickly as possible. Having said that, I think I may have to look for survivability as opposed to damage in the secondary. This is another place I get stuck (in addition to cost) though as I have never made a scrapper with a damage aura and would kind of like to branch out and try something new. All of my scrappers are /WP, /SR or /Regen. -
Thanks BrokenPrey!
I guess that explains why nobody is responding...no point in doing anything until I19.
How about this then?
I currently have the toon softcapped to all 3 positions. If I remember correctly, I need to focus on recharge next and then regen? What else should I be focusing on?
Thanks
