    PnP System

Champions has a simple combat system. All powers are based on 11+ to hit from 3 dice.

The nice thing about Champoins (and why it might best suit your purpose) is that it represents all levels better than any other game I've played. By that I mean that using the same system you can have non-powered normals, pulp heroes and super heroes. They can all be different power levels, all using the same rules and can all mix up together.

The down side (as some have) is that the combat can be slow. However its always fun and very comic book.

Feel free to email me any questions you might have.
  2. Well I gave up, I can't get the game to load in Any file using
    /bind_load_file

I tried quotes I tried /, \, no matter what I put in It says unable to read in bind file.

So I just did this -

    r "++forward"
    button5 "powexec_name fly$$powexec_name hover"
    button4 "tell $name, Sprinting$$powexec_name Sprint"
    lalt+button4 "tell $name, falling!$$powexec_name Sprint$$powexec_name Hover$$powexec_name Fly$$powexec_abort"

until I figure out what the hell is wrong.

so Mouse button 4 switches on and off sprint and mouse button 5 switches between fly and hover.
I put in lalt+button4 to drop me to the ground.

thanks for trying to help though.
  3. Okay here is "Chapter 1" of my character's life. Or something. Work in progress. So please be critical. Sorry it's long, I like to write.

Origin Stories: The Chronicles of Impadivus

    Chapter 1: ‘Awakening’

When I awoke amidst a pile of broken concrete and splinters of wood 12 years ago, I had no idea how I got there. I stared blankly for a moment at the sun through a crack in the wreckage above my head wondering how hurt I was. I didn't feel anything broken or torn, I felt fine. Then, as I started to move around a question much more frightening than 'Where am I?' struck me...

    'Who am I?'

Now, terrified and alone, I frantically pushed away the garbage on top of me and clawed my way to the surface. When I stood up, I was surrounded by broken houses, smoldering rubble and no sounds except for fire eating at the fallen buildings. The whole block was destroyed and I saw no one else around me. I sat down on the remains of what I imagined might have been my house, but I could not remember. Then, looking around at where I was buried, and what it was I had pushed off of myself, I realized no 14 year old could do such a thing. It was nearly a ton of concrete and wood, pieces of a home. With my face in my hands I started to cry... 'What am I?'

The question did not linger long, because in the distance I could hear sirens approaching, but more than that, I could see people coming. They were flying, and jumping great heights towards me. I did not move from my spot, I was trying to remember what was happening to me, trying to understand how people could be flying... Then they started tearing away the debris scattering the landscape, calling for people to answer them. They moved the hunks of garbage and chunks of concrete as if they were feathers, I was sure they were looking for survivors. I just watched them, not answering or calling to them, just watching.

Then a woman, wearing a very colourful costume turned in my direction. She saw me and smiled, turned to a group of other costumed people and pointed at me. She then flew across the ground and landed kneeling next to me.

    “Are you ok?” She asked.

    I merely nodded.

She looked me over with a concerned gaze and added, “We better get you to the hospital to have you checked out anyways. Do you know if your family is okay? Do you now if anyone else is here?”

I only shook my head ‘No’.

She placed her hand on my shoulder and sighed heavily, “Okay, let’s get you to that hospital.” She picked me up and turned back to her companions. “I’m going to take this little guy to the hospital.” I heard someone in the distance ask how things looked, she responded; “Not too good.” She looked back at me and asked if I was ready, I nodded in agreement and she floated up off the ground, higher into the sky. I looked back down and saw how bad things really did look from above. The whole city block was gone. I looked up at her and remembered something…

    “Hero.” I said.

She closed her eyes and smiled. “What’s your name?” She asked.

    “I… I don’t know.”

“Oh?” She looked confused, “Do you know where you are? Who your family is?”

    “No… I don’t remember anything.”

“Hmm. We will see what the doc has to say. You may have gotten a little bump on the head, but the rest of you seems perfectly fine.”

She began to descend to what looked like a parking lot, the building ahead of us read ‘Steel Canyon Medical Center’. A doctor was already standing on the front steps of the hospital, he looked to the woman with me and asked, “There were no more?”

“He is the only one so far, doc.”

“That’s unfortunate…” He bent down and looked me over briefly. “Not a scratch on you, eh? You were lucky, a little dirty and torn clothes, but I think you’ll be okay. Come inside so we can run some tests.”

“I’m going back to help the search party, we will contact you on any changes, doc.”

The doctor nodded and began to lead me into the hospital. He didn’t speak much to me, and when I looked up at him he seemed very concerned about something… Very deep in thought. We came to a room with what looked like some scanners and a regular hospital bed. He motioned for me to lie down.

“So, what’s your name?” He asked.

    “I don’t know.”

“Don’t remember anything? Not how you got there or who your parents are?”

“I’m trying… But my mind feels so blank. The only thing I remember is waking up in a pile of garbage. And something about Heroes… What are they?” I looked to him for the answer; I needed something, anything, to give me a hint.

“Heroes are all over this city. They protect us and make sure that nothing bad happens to regular people. Not a day goes by that I don’t thank them for all they’ve done around here. I don’t know what the world would be like if the Heroes had not come around to save us from ourselves.” I remained still while he tried to draw some blood, as he pressed harder onto my arm with the needle it broke under the stress. Not really bothered by it, he tossed the needle away and got one from another cabinet, this one went in and drew blood just fine.

“Why did that other one break?” I asked him.

“Oh? Well it seems that your skin is a little tougher than regular folk. I had to use our special needles to take your blood.”

Feeling my expression look a little upset I asked, “What’s so special about them?”

He turned away while he picked up a small device of some kind and said, “We use them for testing injured Heroes.”

I didn’t speak. I didn’t know what to say. I was racking my brain, trying to remember where I was… Nothing made sense to me. The doctor waved the device over my body and recorded something down on his clipboard. As he set it down on the counter next to the bed, the door opened and a large man came in. He was dressed in a full costume and wearing some kind of helm. The doctor hurried to him before the man could get close to me. I could overhear what they began to discuss.

“They found a child there? That can’t be possible.” The Large Man remarked.

“Well it is possible. And he’s no ordinary child. He exhibits Hero traits, and he was the only survivor. To top it off he has some form of amnesia. I took some blood and will have tests run right away, but it’s not a good idea to agitate him. Especially knowing where he was found. My only suggestion is to get him to the Hero Corps Training facility and get him working on his potential. Whatever that may be.” The doctor opened the door to the room and started to walk the Large Man out. I could hear him saying something about, ‘We need to know who the father was, doctor, it could make all the difference…’ Then he trailed off as they walked down the hall.

I looked around the room, I was frantic. I didn’t want to go anywhere called some ‘Hero Training’ place, but I didn’t know where I wanted to go either. All I knew was that I couldn’t stay here. I walked to the window and slid it open, no locks and no grates were on it so I slid out on to the ledge. It was only the second story so closed my eyes and jumped down onto the sidewalk. It didn’t hurt at all, and something like that was getting far from surprising. I checked to see if anyone noticed me and then I ran. I ran far and as fast as I could from that hospital and the doctor and the Large Man. I wanted to run away from whatever it is I’d become. When I stopped I just ducked into an alley and leaned against the wall, and I wasn’t even out of breath. When I looked out onto the street I couldn’t see the hospital, but I could still hear the sirens going to, or from, that street block they found me in. I saw a trash bin on the sidewalk and went over to fish out a newspaper. I ducked back into the alley and opened it up. The heading on the front read ‘Paragon City Bugle’. So this is where I was, ‘Paragon City’… A city of heroes it seems.

I dropped the paper on the ground and walked back out onto the street. The sun felt good beating down on me. No one seemed to notice me or look at me, and no one was looking for me right now either. So I just started walking down the street, hands in my pockets, trying not to be noticed. I still didn’t know where I was going, or what was in store for me, and to this day, I still could’ve never guessed what would happen to me next.

  6. Oooh, ooh, I hang around Virtue a lot. I think it annoys my non-RPing teams how I ALWAYS talk in OOC to them. XD Anyways, if you see 'Shukaku,' a shortish Force Fielder in a black and red costume, that's me. I'd retype his origin and such here, but it's honestly rather boring and you can find a condensed version in his info in-game. ^^;
  7. Well Shukaku, having a demon sealed inside of him, (So I'm a Naruto fanboy! So what?) suffers from occasional insanity and referring to himself in the third person. I never let my quirks slip into my regular leveling, nor do I RP at ALL with non-RPers. After all, if I stopped shielding people for two fights and started screaming at myself, they'd probably kick me from the team. I do always talk in "(( ))" to designate OOC, though.
  8. In 1980 several infants were willingly given to science for a very strange experiment. This experiment would take 500 babies, give them to 500 pairs of scientist "parents" and put 250 of them into an environment which recreated the cold war. The other 250 would be put into good homes with caring parents, during the same time period, but under different conditions in which The Cold War never took place.

Six years later the affects were only beginning to show. In one community the six year olds were all brought inside before dark, and in another community the children were allowed to play until much after their bedtime. For one community food was much more scarce and dinners were small, jobs hard to find, and fear of bombings very high. In every "basement" there was a "bomb shelter". The other community was rich and plentiful with food and jobs.

In one community a young boy named Thomas, or as his friends all began to call him Tommy Boy. Tommy Boy was very outgoing and kept himself in great shape for his whole life. He led a mostly normal life until he turned 13 and his "father" was "killed" when a "Communist" invasion happened. Really this particular Scientist wanted to find out what would happen if this happened to a child.

Tommy Boy became very angry after this. His football carreer excelled and he was voted most Physically Fit in High School for four years in a row. He never bothered himself with any girlfriends, but instead took to studying about Communism.

Soon he was the MVP of his football team, and had it all it seemed. For a single working woman his "mother" did very well. She was a teacher at the Elementary School, even though no one went to that school anymore, strangely. None of the kids noticed that there were no visitors to their little town or what-not.

Tommy Boy graduated High School a year early when he was 17, and instead of going to work he made a call to a very influential man, or a scientist who posed as a military recruiter. Tommy Boy lied about his age and became a "soldier". The scientists brought in other military people who trained Tommy Boy.

When the experiment finally ended Tommy Boy was enraged. He couldn't quite grasp the fact that everything was a lie, and when he saw the man who posed as his father he broke down. He inquired about Communism, which he still had a particular hate for, and found out that it was not very rampant any longer. He refused to give up his dream of completely stopping Communism so he began fighting the next best thing. Villainry.

He trained and trained until he was at his peak of physical fitness. He was 24 then and read about Paragon City in the paper. He quickly rushed there and took on the name of "Commie Basher". He is still not well known, though he is more known than he used to be. Not many people feel they need someone bent on taking down Communism, but he feels that the Thugs and Villains of Paragon are as close to Communist you can get while not leaving America, and so he fights for the citizens of Paragon City night and day.

    One question:
Why do the commands like the one above return to Hover when the key is released?

For example, when you first press w, it executes a Hover and a Fly (which turns off Hover and turns on Fly given the situation) and begins moving you forward. Holding the key continues moving you foward (due to the +forward). When you release the key, the forward movement stops. But why does releasing the key do anything at all to Fly or Hover?

This is the greatests thing since sliced-bread btw, and I will certainly use some variation of it when I have a character who can fly (sigh) but I'm just curious about how that part works.

    Thanks!

  11. It's actually an easy job. Find the bad guy. Shoot the bad guy. Lock the bad guy up. Rinse and repeat.

So how did it get so screwed up? For that, we've gotta go back a few years. To The Accident.

The short version is - I never saw her coming. Getting t-boned at 75 miles an hour by a drunk soccer mom in a Ford Excessive is no picnic, even when you're driving a Crown Vic (or as we like to call them "Land Yachts").

The long story is this - Gina and I had been fighting again, and I wasn't paying attention. Sure, the soccer mom was the one who ran the light, but any other day, I'd have seen her coming. But I wasn't paying attention. I was too pissed off. Pissed at Gina, pissed at myself, pissed at the world. So I ate 2 tons of steel at 75 miles an hour. AI (accident investigation) says there weren't even any skidmarks. Soccer moms, what're ya gonna do?

Rehab was a [censored]. I've been busting perps for 15 years, and I swear to the Almighty not one of them ever hurt me more than that physical therapist, and she musta weighed all of 102 pounds. She was one of those "up with life!" people. God I hated her. "Just one more set Mr. Valentine! Let's just stretch a little bit more Mr. Valentine! Just one more lap Mr. Valentine!" blah blah blah!

That's when it all started, really. At first the pills were just to "modulate the pain" said the doc. What he didn't tell me was that they were as addictive as heroin. Couple that with my previous tendency to hit the sauce and you've got a bad combination. I never felt empathy for any of the junkies I busted, and I don't make any excuses for my own problems, but anyone who tells you it's easy to kick an addiction has never had one, plain and simple. And the next jackass who tells me it's easy is gonna get kicked in the chiclets, guaranteed.

I managed to hide it though. You been on the force as long as I have and the muckety mucks down at district tend to overlook the occasional "false positive" on the piss test. I slid by for a while, but even though they didn't catch me, it was only a matter of time before my problems caught up with me.

In reality, the kid had it comin'. He was a career criminal who had done some truly bad things in his time, and D.C. is a safe place without him. The truth is, it never shoulda happened. I wasn't even on duty, fer Chrissakes! It had been a long day and the Rollins case was drivin me nuts, so I headed over to the Broken Rainbow to blow off a little steam.

Typical Cop Bar, the BR. Good Irish bartender, stiff drinks, nice and dark. I think I had two, maybe three Balvenie Double Barrels along with a few pills, just to take the edge off. I was feelin' pretty good when I walked outta there, the Rollins case just a distant, fuzzy memory.

I decided I'd stop off at the liquor store to pick up a sixer of Perettis to put me down for the night. Won's Liquor usually had it in stock, so I ambled in. Took one look at the dude behind the counter and knew the [censored] was about to hit the fan.

The first guy tried to take me out with a sap. He broke my collarbone because I was already on the move, but that just made me angry. I tossed him into a display case full of Agave Tequilas, the real good stuff. The second guy pulled a gun...

At least, that's what I thought he was pulling. The IAD later said it was a billy club, but the thing had a handle and was black. I emptied my clip into his chest, and I'm telling you right now, if that situation comes up again I'd do the same thing, I was that sure.

Needless to say, IAD didn't overlook my false positives. I served 6 months "probationary suspension" which basically means they cut me down to clerical pay and leave me to rot, with barely enough money to pay my bills.

I got by, though. And I got clean. Haven't touched a bottle of booze or a bottle of pills since that night. Not even aspirin. I spent 2 weeks sweating, pissing, and [censored] myself before I got all that crap out of my system, and I'll be damned if I'm going to put any back in.

Once they reinstated me, I knew I was gonna pull crap detail for at least another year. And here I am. Paragon City. The Rikti screwed this place up but good. All these years later and parts of this place are still a dump. I'll take it though. They gave me my badge back, and I intend to keep it.

Yeah, there's a lot of HWOL's around here. That's Heros Without a License in case you're wondering. I don't give em any trouble though, most of em seem to at least be fighting on the right side. They may look ridiculous running around in their jammies, but I guess bein' able to shoot lasers out of your *** and whatnot can make you a little...unbalanced. As long as they're not pointing them at me, we're cool.

Besides, I'm only here as long as it takes me to get back to D.C., where the real fun is. And maybe, just maybe, Paragon City won't turn out to be so bad after all.

So anyways, if you're wondering who the law is around here, you come talk to me. Name's Taylor Valentine, but you can just call me U S Marshall until we know eachother better. I'll see you around...

Could it be that your binds are not loading the proper file because they're too long? I know there is a max length, and maybe it's cutting off some of the last few characters of the filename, or something?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Not likely. I have a program that generates the short 8.3 filename and appends it to the end of the files for a rotating comments/text, and some of the lines in those files far exceed (by at least 20 characters at times -because of the path to the bindifles) and those work fine.

No idea other, but I doubt the length of the lines. I would more likely suspect that it is the number of commands issued per line. (ie, no more than 3 $$ per line, yeilding 4 commands... )

    PnP System

For superhero games specifically, I have not seen a lot of systems I would describe as great. Abberrant was better in my opionion than most, but the setting that goes with it might not mesh well with what you're going for.

There are a couple superhero d20 games out there, but d20 has never been my cup of tea.

If you just want to check out a cool game, look for anything associated with Greg Stolze. He's incredibly talented, and even if its not his personal project, he hardly ever gets involved with anything thats not brilliant. For a supers game he worked on, try "Godlike" which is set in WW2. My favorite game of his is called "Unknown Armies".

That being said,Stolze is really better at atmosphere, setting, and good writing than he is at game mechanics. The newer edition of Unknown Armies is a lot better about this.
  18. Ok SO I fixed the 2 Typos you pointed out.

They were direct copy/paste from my file.

I Receive the Unable to read in bind file message as soon as I hit either Mouse button 4, 5 or lalt+button4.

It will say for example the 'reset' button lalt+button4

    in the top chat window-
unable to read in keybind file
    Shutting Off Hover
Now readying Fly instead of Sprint.
Your hover has made you harder to hit.

When I hit button 5 it says -

Unable to read in keybind file
    Shutting off Hover
Your hover has made you harder to hit.

when I hit button 4 it says

Unable to read in keybind file
(though it turns sprint on and off)

So doesn't this mean that the game fails to load in any of the 'flybind' files I am tellling it to?

I have them all in C:\

including the keybinds file. They are all called flybind1.txt thru flybind4.txt

I have reloaded the keybinds using /bind_load

I can't figure out why it won't load in the bind files.

this is pasted from my keybinds file

    lalt+button4 "tell $name, Flight Re-set You are now hovering$$powexec_name Sprint$$powexec_name Hover$$powexec_name Fly$$powexec_abort$$powexec_name Hover$$bind_load_file c:\flybind3.txt"
    button4 "tell $name, Sprinting$$powexec_name Sprint$$bind_load_file c:\flybind2.txt"
    button5 "tell $name, Hovering$$powexec_name Hover$$powexec_name Hover$$bind_load_file c:\flybind3.txt"
    R "++forward"

thanks for helping, i appreciate it.

  19. SinAbyss, GREAT Idea binding the fly/hover toggles to a movement key!

Blue Volt, Great evolution of the idea!

I'd like to continue changing the idea a bit, and simplifying it in ways for my own style of play. Just like Blue Volt, I give all credit to other posters, as I am just mixing and matching their ideas to get what I want. Which is:

I want only 2 modes... one for running/Ground movement, and one for flying/Air movement. In both modes I want Speed on demand, using SinAbyss' brilliant trick so that Sprint or Fly is only turned on when a movement key is pressed, and immediately switched back to nothing/hover when the key is released. I want my Autorun key (R) to activate Sprint/Fly also, just like any other movement key, for travel purposes; I see no need for completely separate modes for traveling, when I usually (and SHOULD to prevent strain on my wrists) travel using autorun.

Another change: I do NOT want these two modes to toggle on a single key. I want one key to activate ground travel, and another to activate air travel, regardless of what mode you're in. So, I do not have to use feedback (the clever self Tells that Blue Volt used), because if I want to know which mode I'm in, I can hit the approriate key easier than I can look down and read which mode I'm in. The keys should also work as Reset keys. So if you accidentally press 2 keys at the same time and get the toggles reversed, pressing your Ground or Air key again straightens you out.

Now, since I just started using ESDF for movement, also thanks to Blue Volt, I'd like to use G and T for these modes... G is for Ground movement, right next to the movement keys, and T is above G, so it is Air. I may change G to somewhere else if I find that I accidentally hit it, and fall out of the sky

So here is what I have so far:

    In Default Keybinds:
    g "powexec_name hover$$powexec_name fly$$powexec_name Sprint$$powexec_name sprint$$powexec_name abort$$bind_load_file ground.txt"
    t "powexec_name sprint$$powexec_name fly$$powexec_name hover$$powexec_name hover$$bind_load_file air.txt"

For those of you who are curious why/how these work, let me see if I can coherently explain. Credit should be given to Curveball and others on these boards... I got all this here, and just giving you my understanding in my own words: Powexec will only activate one power per Bind, the last one that it can, but it can DEactivate any number.

Example: a bind has Powexecs for powers X, Y and Z in that order. If X is on, it turns it off, but if X is off, it says "Ok, I'll turn on X when I finish this bind". Then if Y is on, it turns it off, but if Y is off it says "forget about X (if I'd decided to turn it on), I'll turn Y on when I finish this bind instead". If Z is on, it will turn it off and since the bind is done, it will activate X or Y (or nothing) depending on what it decided in the previous two steps, but if Z is off, then it says "forget about X or Y, I'll turn Z on" and it then does turn on Z because the bind is done.

Complicated, eh? Took me a while too, but here are some useful combos:

ZZ: The double Z first makes sure it's off, then turns it back on, ensuring it's on.

XYZZ makes sure that X and Y are off, and makes sure Z is ON. This is how I setup the binds above.

XY: will activate Y first if neither is on, and then toggle between X and Y.

XYZ will make sure that X is off, turn on Z first if nothing is, and then toggle between Y and Z with additional keypresses.

If you follow any of these with a powexec abort, whichever power it decided to turn on... well, it doesn't.

so the above binds will call the 2 files below, which simply change the movement keys:

    Ground.txt:
    e "+forward$$powexec_name sprint"
    s "+left$$powexec_name sprint"
    f "+right$$powexec_name sprint"
    d "+backward$$powexec_name sprint"
    space "+up"
    lshift+space nop
    r "++forward$$powexec_name sprint"

    Air.txt:

    e "+forward$$powexec_name hover$$powexec_name fly"
    s "+left$$powexec_name hover$$powexec_name fly"
    f "+right$$powexec_name hover$$powexec_name fly"
    d "+backward$$powexec_name hover$$powexec_name fly"
    space "+up$$powexec_name hover$$powexec_name fly"
    lshift+space "+down$$powexec_name hover$$powexec_name fly"
    r "++forward$$powexec_name hover$$powexec_name fly"

Ok, so it sounds good to me on paper, but I don't even HAVE hover and fly yet (I'm 11th, and get hover at 12, and fly at 14). I did try ground movement last night, but my G key didn't have the abort, so wasn't as absolute of a reset. Can you all take a look, or even try it out, and help me iron out the bugs? And if I add a ++up after the ++forward for r in Air, can I use Mouselook to aim 45 degrees down so I can see better, while still flying horizontal?

    Thanks!

  20. So I've been using these and have been pretty happy, although I still get frustrated when I hit two movement keys at once and things get all out of whack.

I tried to add a binding for 'x' so I would fly down really fast, but I can't get it to work. Is there some reason x == down shouldn't work?

  22. Zloth, I was merely quoting the other post.
    Let me rephrase it.

I have tried using that command line parameter calling cityofheroes.exe. It simply does not work. It displays the typical mfc dialogue with a simple message staying You cannot call cityofheroes.exe directly. Please try running the updater instead.

I've tried numerous things for passing in the parameter and always get the same. Not that it matters anyway, the in game demos aren't very useful at all: no UI showing, no chat, no target window, etc. About the only thing it's good for is eye candy, or a screen saver lol.

  24. Smack,

Could it be that your binds are not loading the proper file because they're too long? I know there is a max length, and maybe it's cutting off some of the last few characters of the filename, or something? Just an idea...
