Quote:Statesman said that was his goal back in the day. Although given what we know now, Positron might have just been humoring Jack when Jack asked how the system worked! Its a common misconception that this game *ever* followed anything remotely like a static Risk=Reward equation. It never has, to my knowledge, because reward systems aren't designed that way.
-
-
Quote:This game hasn't followed a more risk = more reward strategy in years. You know that. Merits demonstrated that. Then why do I get the best rewards on my 50 by steamrolling TFs full of -1s with little-to-no risk?
tl;dr: Enemies over 50 should drop more stuff the more levels they are over 50.
True story. I was on my newly redeemed Dominator when I got a tell asking to do a Katie Hannon. I had about 45 mins. so I said SURE! Got in there, it was a group that hadn't ever done the TF before. No support, noob tank, real PUG disaster. 45 minutes later I felt bad leaving these folks to the mercy of a +3 AV that they simply didn't have the DPS to defeat.
Since we went to this Time:Reward strategy, this TF isn't done anywhere near as much as it used to be although it's objectively more difficult than TFs that give 4-5 times the reward. -
Quote:I think the STF/LRSF was the absolute BEST choice they could have made. It was almost an obvious choice. Both from a story standpoint and given the developer's goals. It is for this reason I think it wasn't the best idea to make them the first WTF. A better choice would have been LGTF or ITF which all 4 alignments can partake in.
Picking a 'difficult' task force, but not one of the Incarnate ones, gives a good story based reason why the Well is taking Notice of you and it provided MANY players their first run at these TFs with scripted encounters.
Well, the good news there, is that the 100 merits will be most welcome!Quote:On the bright side, at least it's a level 50 TF/SF and not Sister P where you lose access to your alpha and higher tier powers, and have no chance for shards/purples.
-
Quote:That's not elitism, that's stupidity. What tank you bring is almost wholly irrelevant. Having a tank at all is a good thing. It's the whole team that matters, not any of the individual parts.I got invited onto a STF team with my WP/SS tanker
After the leader accepted the TF, they told me that there was no way my tank could survive the TF, but they'd allow the team to vote on whether I'd be kicked or not. Quit as fast as I could
After quitting the TF, I sent the leader a tell to let them know the tank already had the Saved the World badge. Had obviously survived the TF. And that it was their damned loss
Elitism is an ugly thing
You were right to leave. But not because you were dealing with elitists, you were dealing with noobs!

Quote:Correct. Which is why we need to finish power proliferation and add Inventions where there are weak or incomplete choices (Targeted AoE) before we even think of spending the time to do pool and epic customization. This really smacks of a Neuron approach to design and implementation. Add something that's only half done, then abandon it and go on to add something else that's only half done, then abandon that and move on to the next new shiny.
I say this not to troll, but rather to say that it seems to me that the developers are all too focused on adding new stuff over fixing or finishing told things.

Well leaving Ouro fixed the problem. Thanks all.

Trying to slot a Cardiac Boost (common) on a character I get the following message:
Quote:This character has been standing still in Ouroboros for five minutes and doesn't have an powers on auto.Incarnate ability Cardiac Boost has not been equipped because you have activated a power or have been attacked too recently. -
Quote:Ok so now we know what it takes to get the Very Rare Alpha Incarnate Slot.
Don't get me wrong I'm working my way towards getting it but there is this niggling feeling...
Does the fact you have to wait 4 weeks, real time, no matter what amount of effort you put in just come across as padding to anyone else?
Basically the devs going, "Oh people got their Uncommon within the day of Issue 19 launch, we don't want that happening again with the Very Rare, especially now people have had a chance to save up Shards and Salvage, So lets put in a long waiting period on the one specific piece of salvage we've decided they'll need atleast 4 of, with no other way of getting it, so that it'll appear to make the Very Rare more work than it really is!"
I get you don't want people who have horded enough Shards to just blitz through the system and go "Done! What's next?" within 2-3 days of the Issue coming out and to keep people running the Weekly Strike Target but...I can't help but feel as if the time sink aspect of it is just that little too obvious.
The Well of the Furies is slightly ticked at us for not taking its power all at one time. It was looking forward to thousands of already super-powered slaves and that damn woman Lady Grey had to go and ruin it.
"So screw you guys," the Well was heard to say. "You bastids want to wait for your power huh?"
"WELL HOW DO YOU LIKE FOUR WEEKS THEN BUDDY!"
Moral of the Story: It has nothing to do with padding. The Well of the Furies is a jerk. -
The Strike Pack is epic. That is all.
I've done the STF more times today than I have in the last six months. This seems to be intended.

Quote:I play both this game and that other game you're talking about. Taking aside which one has more sub numbers (which is irrelevant if you like the game), you are aware that the endgame is designed around grouping right? So you're taking into account PS3 game sales as well, console sales (I.E. consoles sold because of that game)? How many people are on each server matters not, only the total number really matters in advertising and to the shareholders.
I'm afraid Batman is far more appealing to me than generic Captain America/Superman love baby Mary Sueman.
Also could you link me to the sub numbers for both these games?
The 'solo' endgame missions are nothing more than regurgitated instances from the leveling game that lead to inferior rewards than what is offered to teams. Listen, I bear that game no ill will (I'm subbed to it), but it doesn't offer anything to a soloist at the endgame. Which if I'm not mistaken is what we're discussing here. Give me a second I'll check the thread title.

Yeah that's right.Quote:Originally Posted by AvateaSoloability and End Game

You mean that much newer and far more appealing to new players MMO that gates the game's best armor behind groups and raids? Just like you're saying the devs are doing here?

Quote:Well some people make those bonds. Others need to be coaxed. You don't have to believe me. Take the time, learn about it.Great if you're doing a study. Out in the real world, people make those bonds anyway. The people I regularly play with, I do so because we enjoyed doing so. Not because we HAD to do it. We needed no coaxing from the devs. Flip side, there are people I've *had* to group with because I wanted to do some content. (Choice, but TFs are, barring IO builds, etc, "team required,") who I've never seen again (and in some cases didn't want to.)
See the difference here is you see a penalty where I do not. You are not penalized by not teaming, you just don't earn certain rewards. When I was in high school, you earned a letter from playing on a sport's team or joining the band. There was no requirement in the school's rules that you had to join a team, but if you wanted to wear the school's emblem you had to play on a team (or play an instrument in an ensemble).Quote:Now if they'd study the difference between "Hey, guys, want to play some baseball?" and "YOU ###### WILL PLAY ###### BASEBALL OR ELSE!" which is more relevant (see: "Play Trials Or Be Locked Out") to the discussion. Maybe YOU like being told what to do. I tend to find being forced through something makes the experience less enjoyable, not more.
I don't remember anyone screaming "FORCED TEAMING!" at baseball practice, but I'm getting old so it's possible I forgot.

Quote:Absolutely the wrong question.Maybe. But running missions without a team is as much of an action as running those same missions with a team. I'd love to hear the reasoning why one of those actions is more valid than the other.
The proper question is "What reasoning is there to encourage players, via increased and exclusive rewards, to group?"
The reasoning is to strengthen the social bonds that players create in-game. Let me share a couple of papers with you: http://www.contemporary-media.co.uk/...ssertation.pdf AND http://www.trinity.edu/adelwich/worl...ris.taylor.pdf
You can do a simple Google search and find dozens of papers on social aspects of MMORPGs.
There's more, but I want you to focus on the anecdotes in those papers. It's been studied over and over, but the people who form the strongest bonds in a game, who will continue to play long after their real affection for the game has waned are those who have formed strong bonds with other players. And honestly, you don't do that by interacting with the market or costume contests. You do that by bonding together, helping each other, most often taking on great challenges. The devs encourage grouping because people remember groups, even if no one is talking. I know several people on the Justice server simply from doing runs of TFs with them or Hami Raids. I don't know anything else about them. They could be total jerks, but they are ace players and I feel a connection by playing with them. Is it even close to the connection with my real friends and family? Hell no, but it's enough that I love playing this game and love the community of the game and especially the Justice server (I am its Overlord after all). -
Quote:I'm actually hoping the restrict it to level capped TF/SFs. The reason being that hero side has some real weird divergences among TFs. Can you imagine what a Katie Hannon week would look like. People have focused on how much a Dr. Q would suck, but really, all that would mean is that people skip that week. A Katie would probably cause a singularity to form in Croatoa from the mass of all the players there.2. I believe that the Weekly Strike Force will include all or most of the existing Task and Strike Forces at all levels. The ability to gain XP while doing them certainly suggests that. And without using the lower level TFs we would be running LGTF, ITF, RSF/STF, Apex, Tin Mage, and Khan/Barracuda ad infiintum. Including the lower level content is a good idea, in my opinion. And I can understand that completing a Task Force would make the Well Notice us. We have completed something epic.
The endgame TFs are, for the most part, all of a reasonable difficulty and all would allow the use of Incarnate abilities.
I don't think the Well notices lowbies.Quote:3. Because everyone on the Task Force completes something epic, I suggest that everyone should acquire a Notice of the Well regardless of level. A non 50 can't do anything but look at it and think of what they might do with it when they do hit level 50. It is a carrot on a long stick encouraging people to get to the end game. It cues new players in to what the game has in store for them at the end. And it helps long term players to create new characters today that could still become level shifted incarnates in a reasonable time.

Quote:I asked the devs about the possibility of a matching function at Comic Con. They answered by looking around and mumbling something about not being able to answer. What that means, who knows. But there were other things I asked them about where they gave a flat 'no'.Of course, whenever I have something nice to say, the forums take an hour to load so as not to let me...
I'd say the solution to that is auto-team-making of some sort, similar to what online games have had for years. WoW, for instance, lets you flag for whichever instances you want to do and keeps you flagged until enough people are flagged for that instance, then it just auto-teams them together. No need for anyone to go out and send tells, beg over global channels or anything like that. The system does all the leg work.
This is similar to the "Quick Match" option in every FPS made in the last ten years, only without the worry that you'll get stuffed in a server with ridiculously high ping. I've always felt this is a good idea, even if I'm not a fan of teaming, random teaming least of all. It's that good of an idea. -

On test now, the gmotd does not tell us what the Weekly Strike Target is.
