Quote:This post is just all kinds of awesome! I really wish more folks had your attitude. Thank you.No, I wouldn't accept a delay for this reason, even putting aside the fact that it's totally unrealistic to expect anything to change. When the feature I wanted (create your own missions and arcs) was released, I don't remember the powergaming, Type A, ambition-focused players who drive me so crazy arguing that it should be delayed because it didn't fit what they wanted out of the game. So, no, even though I think the implementation is pretty wretched, mechanical character improvements like the Lore slot shouldn't be delayed simply because its backstory grounding and visual presentation is pretty wretched.
Someone in either this or another thread (it's getting hard to keep them straight) argued that "art wasn't a priority" for development. Well, no, of course it isn't. While there are players out there, including me, some roleplayers and some not, who view this game primarily as an animated movie about their characters, not all players think that way, and the devs certainly don't seem to.
The devs are game mechanics engineers. They, and, incidentally, a lot of players, view this as "game," not in the sense of "a game of 'let's pretend,'" but in the sense of "a game of football" or "a game of Monopoly." For those players, and for a majority of the dev team, the game is something that can be "won," in one fashion or another. Art and story are means to support the ends of gameplay, not ends in themselves.
For example, those who are AE mavens may remember Dr. Aeon stating that much of his job consisted of being told things like "write an arc about a hero who goes bad" or some other, rather broad, direction. He doesn't create a story about Incarnates and then send Positron and his minions off to develop a system to support it; it's the other way around. (Yes, I'm aware that development probably isn't quite that one-sided, but years of dev discussion of the way they work convinces me that I'm more or less correct.)
Similarly, Going Rogue was born not because the devs really wanted to show off Praetorian Earth, but to provide a mechanism for switching sides and for gluing an end-game system onto a game that hadn't previously had one.
With that kind of development structure, you're going to get some serious misses if you're the kind of player who prefers the "support" of art and story over the "meat" of gameplay. I'm not arguing that those priorities are necessarily right, but I think they have to be acknowledged.
Further, the gameplay element here, I think, is seen as particularly crucial to the life of the franchise. Incarnates are this game's attempt to capture the raider-/advancement-driven market of the hardcore MMO player. Rightly or wrongly, it's an attempt to bring in a demographic that hasn't been part of the game's primary market before. And I suspect that, for that reason, here even more than elsewhere, art and story have been even less of a driving force in creating the new content. I can clearly imagine a dev raising the kinds of objections players here have at a development meeting three years ago and being told in response, "Yeah, those players will be dissatisfied, but they got all those years of costumes and power customization and that AE thing. They'll be satisified with that. Anyway, people will only do this endgame stuff if they really want to win more parts of the game."
Now, you can argue that this represents a misunderstanding on the devs' part of how players can cross from one demographic to another, but I don't think it's a totally unreasonable mode of thinking. Yes, I'd be happier if some consideration had been given to granting me the ability to tailor Incarnate content to my characters in nonmechanical ways. But I can't really fault the devs for overlooking that option. They weren't expecting someone like me to use the Incarnate system in the first place.
So, to all those disappointed with the (over)emphasis on Tyrant, the Praetorian Lore pets, or the inability to make the fire from your Pyronic WhiteWall Radial Judgement green, I suggest keeping in mind that you're not the target audience for this stuff. The devs believe, rightly or wrongly, that you're already loyal to the game, that you have enough features to keep you occupied without this. Those boosts are meant to ensnare and keep players who just want to "beat the game."
Now, I question the wisdom of that design philosophy. I don't much like that kind of contest-oriented thinking, in a game or in life, for that matter. This new direction the game is taking troubles me on some level, but I'm not willing to hold back the enjoyment of people who have been screaming for it for years. I am not the only player here. I don't have to love everything. -
Quote:Except folks never let it be a one-off post. They post in multiple places for weeks on end about it. Folks like Sam, who plays a MMORPG but apparently doesn't like MMORPGs.You just did. I have nothing against you, Dan, but what do you think you achieved by posting this, other than a "take that" at these people you seem to have contempt for? Do you honestly think someone will read this and say "My God! He's right! I must stop doing this!" Because from my experience, all that does is cause more animosity.
I know Zombie Man enjoys the animosity and feels it is his duty to put people in their place around these parts, but again - that does not help. Like I've said before - if you let one-off posters make their one-off post, ignore it and move away, their one-off post will have no significant impact on the thread. If, by contrast, you opt to start a huge argument about it, the thread becomes about that. -
Quote:Did you read the OP? He's talking about changing the LORE power. That's the powers team. Some of you care about customizing the LORE pets. I wasn't responding to you.Power Proliferation is a Powers issue. The appearance of the pets is an art and animation issue. What do you want them to do, animate you an Illusion Dom? The pets' mechanics aren't the issue for a lot of people. They can get art and animation redoing the look of the pets, while the powers team gets cracking on the Martial Arts Blaster secondary

Yes, but some people don't want LORE to even be pets. I don't disagree, I just don't want anymore delays. LORE is what it is. It's one slot. Don't fill it or only fill it enough to get your Incarnate shift but never use them. I don't care. I wants my Judgment, Destiny and Interface and I am not willing to suffer any delays because people want something besides pets.Quote:Not everyone is asking for customizable powers. Some of us are just asking for a customizable or non-Praetorian appearance. Of course some people are asking for the moon, some people will always ask for the moon, but what many of us are asking for isn't a balance issue at all. It's an art issue.
Then they should stop writing terrible stuff. -

Don't like the pets, but no delay.
A delay means other stuff gets put on the back burner. Since LORE pets are a power that means the powers team is wrapped up redoing LORE and not giving me Illusion Dominators. So no delay. -
Quote:I remember that mission. Got darn, City of Villains sucks. lol. I want to make an alt now.Biff's not just a boss.
He's an *Arachnoid* Elite Boss, IIRC.
Arachnoid Bosses are a high damage, mezzing, regenerating, debuffing nightmare. Arachnoid Elite Bosses who decide they really have an urgent appointment somewhere else? -
Quote:Yup. I actually expect DCUO to go F2P, but like with Cryptic all that's going to mean is that my lifetime sub gets me premium status forever. That's all I was looking for. They launched with a little shopping cart icon as part of the social UI

That game has potential. It won't take me from my beloved CoH ever, but it's fun for some mindless bashing once in awhile. -
Quote:Which ignores that the enemies you just left behind are now substantially weaker. So, when 6 months from now we see a substantial number of people soloing TFs and AVs who used to feel almost impossible now seem trivia, I guess folks still won't feel like they've gotten any stronger.I feel much the same way, and an "arms race" is a good way to put it. What I tend to dislike about most traditional RPGs is that they're so designed that you slowly fall behind the power curve and need more and more help to do less and less. I know the story tries to convince us that we're stronger really, really hard, but the fact remains that everything only gets more and more difficulty and requires more and more people.
"Show, don't tell." I'm being told I'm stronger, but I don't see it. I don't "feel" it. It just feels like my enemies are racing ahead of me.
Sure, people will be doing minimum team size runs of B.A.F. and Lambda with ease, the formerly +4 NPCs now at +1, but I guess folks won't feel any stronger then either.
-
Minimum for Lambda is 8
Minimum for B.A.F. is 12 -
LOL! I know you're ignoring me, but great post Sam. Running bosses do suck. I had forgotten about those as well. Isn't there a CoV mission where Crimson (an Elite Boss/AV) runs away from you? I seem to remember, logging off immediately after that mission in disgust.

Quote:I think it is copying and pasting, but then it's the balancing and making sure that copy and paste doesn't break any number of things that's the holdup. At least that's how it was explained to me one of the 2349 I whined about no Illusion Dominators! To be fair, we as players really have no idea how time intensive something like powerset proliferation is. For all we know, it could be as simple as copying and pasting an entry from one database to another. Or it could be a living hell that takes a team of people days on end to do one single powerset. Because of that I try to avoid making statements about how easy or hard something would be for the Devs to do.

Quote:I think for my part, I am assuming that most folks won't fill every slot with every available power. For my BS/Regen, I went Spiritual Alpha and can't see any reason I would ever take that off. Now with Destiny I can see a bit of difference, but given that people will probably want to work on at least a few alts, I can't see filling every slot unless you're a hardcore monogamist with your characters. That's why I said "in a year or two". There's no opportunity cost between the slots, so while you might shoot green lightning, and I might shoot yellow lightning, and Joe Bob shoots green fire, we all have a super-damage AoE. And so will the other people we are teamed with. Common, rare, very rare-- that's mostly about effectiveness. I'm talking about the very fact that we all have a high damage AoE and a massive buff (and the pets, which are obviously the most visible aspect, but I don't want to focus on them).
That's what I'm asking about-- not 5 months from now while there's still some variety, but 1-2 years from now when, on the raids they have then (and on all level 50 content! Imagine this on the ITF and LGTF, and STF, etc), people are firing off their Destiny powers in a cycle and alternating Judgement. Even leaving the pets out of it-- I'm asking, how do you feel about that?
If your response is the same, and you figure people won't bother with filling every slot, that's cool. I just want to make sure that I'm being clear.
I guess for me, it doesn't bother me that much, because people will still have their birth ATs with the Incarnate abilities on top, which while they'll be similar won't be so similar that everyone feels the same.Quote:And that's really the perspective I would like people to have when answering my questions (hey guys, please answer the questions
)-- How do you feel about EVERYONE effectively having the same AT in the end?
I particularly hope Arcanaville pops in here, because she's talked about mechanical homogeneity in the past. -
It's not a robot. It's a projection of the power of the Well.
-
Quote:Yes, I hadn't thought of it that way, but that's probably a better way to look at it than seeing the Incarnate abilities as "levels". It's kinda like the old, old Dungeons & Dragons Immortal class. It is strange to think that eventually a fully slotted Incarnate (with all the Alpha, Lore, Judgement, etc. slots filled) will really be more a virtual "Incarnate AT" than a "random AT/Powerset alt who also happens to be an Incarnate". The old concepts of being a specific AT or having specific powersets will be minimized in favor of simply being an Incarnate, as if being an Incarnate was a brand new AT in and of itself.
I suppose it'll lead to a kind of "cookie-cutter homogeneity" the same way it would if everyone eventually only played Peacebringers or Widows.
You were born as a mage, thief, fighter, or cleric, but once you become an Immortal you have a new character class and new abilities. You haven't really forgot what you knew before, you've grown into a whole new set of abilities. -
Please don't misquote me. I said "use micro-transactions TO SUPPORT ITSELF" The boosters are pretty minimal compared to what SOE is doing in some of its games and Cryptic.
-
As you know from discussions we've had, I'm no fan of the Praetorian pets. But other than that particular slot, I don't really see the Incarnate abilities as significantly increasing the homogeneity of players at level 50.
Yes, probably most hardcore characters will have the first five slots filled in a few months. But the great boon of the Incarnate system is that folks can choose where and how deep to go into a particular pool. Like Inventions, you can craft your own path to power.
Personally, plan on the following for my main: Very Rare Spiritual Alpha; Very Rare Diamagnetic Interface; Rare Ion Judgment; Rare Rebirth and Rare Barrier Destiny; and Rare Seers Lore.
I'm almost certain that others will make different selections. And that's what's great. People will do what they want. Yes, things will get a little silly with all the pets. I'm seriously thinking of making a Thugs/Dark/Mace/IDF Mastermind Vigilante just to break the game solo!

Quote:There is not a lifetime sub in this game like DCUO or Champions. I would certainly buy one, but I don't see the devs offering one. We have far too many rabidly committed subscribers here so it wouldn't likely work out.I see that the Distinguished Competition has been offering this, but I don't really think I want it. I WOULD take advantage of a "lifetime" sub to CoX, as it's proven itself to be the source of thousands of hours of creative recreation. Yet I don't find an option for this in account management.
Who else would shell out for a "lifetime" sub?
DCUO is a good candidate for a lifetime sub because it doesn't have much content right now and they need the revenue to continue to improve. But I fear that lifetime subs increase the likelihood that a game will have to use micro-transactions to support itself. -
Quote:That's not my argument. My argument goes like this. If you don't want to do that stuff, there's literally DAYS worth of solo content you can do and get great rewards for doing so. So far, the Incarnate abilities are powerful, but not more powerful than a very strong Inventions build. The most powerful Inventions builds are available through 100% solo play. You can use Ouroboros and Tips and even just farming bosses in hazard zones for rares/purples. There's plenty to do and I doubt that most of the folks complaining have done it all. Sam might have though given how long he's been here. That's the thing though what happens next?
If a person doesn't want/isn't able to, take part in raids and so on, what are they to do? Especially when the next issue is Incarnate gated, and the issue after that? Well they can just leave, seems to be the response from the dev defense force.
Actually for the first couple of years, there were much more onerous group requirements in standard content. Things like simultaneous glowies and guaranteed AVs in standard missions. So it's not exactly true that this is a new development.Quote:We've done fine without group only progression, we've done fine without 'real' time sinks and gating. Why after seven years have the devs decided to shift the spirit of the game? -
-
So was I. Not all of the Incarnate powers are going to be able to be role played as part of your character's inherent powers. My Scrapper whose mutant powers are flight and regeneration is gaining the power to do AoE damage (for example) from the Well of the Furies, not from some secondary mutation.

Quote:To a certain extent, I agree with this. You do have a pathway to play one main for a long time. But then, that's really the point of the system. People wanted exactly what you posted. A MMORPG endgame. This game used to be very alt friendly, but now it is becoming like a generic 'fantasy' MMORPG, choose one toon as your main and do your dailies and weeklies to gear up, don't bother rolling an alt because you'll progress at half speed.
For my part, I'm alted out. Alts only last a few levels before I tire of them and go back to my mains. But for some folks that's still a relevant style of play and Incarnates do not harm that play. In fact, the WST enhances it. Getting a Sister Psyche is not normally that easy since it's not a great TF. I was much easier when it was the target. Very friendly for altoholics, badgers, etc.
I don't see much negative from Incarnates so long as a player can accept that it might not be for them and it's not the end of the game that this stuff will be added. I'm currently playing that market leader you mentioned. Super casually, highest character is 24. I have NO intention to raid there and don't have a problem with that. I play for enjoyment. If it feels like a job I stop. Incarnates don't feel like a job to me. It's fun. -
Quote:Uhhh I don't think folks don't know where the powers came from by now.
Sam doesn't apparently. Remember I was responding to him. Incarnate powers are not 'your' powers.Quote:Speaking of the pets, I have the same problems with those as I did with the Arachnos pets - they're specific to an enemy faction and hard to sell as your OWN powers. Well, that and I was as sick of Arachnos by the time we were given those as I am sick of Praetoria even now. -
Quote:It's not my fallacy. It's the industry's fallacy. Let's say I agree with you and to a certain extent I do. Why then hasn't a game been made where teaming is 100% optional the way you all describe optional, I.e. no reward is gated to team/group content?Social interaction =/= teaming. Hell I've seen LESS social interaction in speed runs. Ive been on speed runs and regular teams where NO ONE talks. I'd bet eventually the same will be of these trials.
I get more social interaction from the Global Chat Channels than some teams. This idea that teaming = social interaction in game is a fallacy (especially for this one).
And thankfully this MMORPG isn't like the dreck that's out there.
I've thought a lot about this, and the level of social interaction that teaming requires is different than social interaction like chatting or marketeering. There's a game element to it. Now this particular game is different than other game where certain roles are not always necessary to succeed. But in other game and even some content in this game, you actually need people to fulfill specific tasks in a group.
Even here, we expect a bubbler to actually bubble. Or a Tank to at least grab the biggest NPCs attention. That's different than just talking to other people. It is you putting other folks in charge of your game to a certain extent. Even if you never say a word, it's putting yourself out there in a way that simply talking or selling stuff on a market does not. I know that on the often hated speed runs, I have to put a lot more faith in the group than I do for a normal TF. It's exhilarating when you get a team where everyone knows what to do and can really push the envelope. For me, and I'd wager others it's more fun that even over the top solo tasks.
So yes, you're right social interaction does not equal teaming. But teaming is a form of social interaction that is unique and worthy of reward. -
Quote:I'm not saying it is unreasonable to ask for different pets. I agree with that. In fact, I would much prefer a customizable pet so everyone can have their own buddy along.Doesn't make them any less unimpressive.
I think folks get where they come from. That's the issue with the design.
Folks are requesting alternate pets for the system. I don't think the suggestion is unreasonable.
But I don't see that option happening any time soon or for ANY of the currently revealed slots.
I'm just explaining the issue of where the powers come from.
