The WST is a great idea, and I would love to see it continue with the same fervor that came with the Strike Pack. So I suggest that we be allowed to convert Notices of the Well into rare and very rare components of the higher thread tiers.
I would suggest the following conversion rate:
Rare thread component = 3 (three) Notices of the Well
Very rare thread component = 1 (one) Favor of the Well; 3 (three) Notices of the Well
Additionally, I would allow a player to purchase a common or uncommon thread component for one Notice of the Well. We're at a point where the trials have had a period of exclusivity and opening up the options seems more than appropriate. -

I don't actually. I think there's a middle ground. I did not agree with the devs' decision on shard conversion costs for example. I knew that was going to get them flamed. All that said, I think folks who have a lack of patience should exercise the option available to them (the trials) to the extent they can. I recognize that because of time of play/hardware/etc. some folks don't have significant access to the trials.

Quote:Wouldn't that effectively allow people to legitimately grief the badges? For Lambda, all one person has to do is get the wrong (or any) weapon, and there goes a particular badge. On BAF all one has to do is pull an AV to another one. Boom no badge. At this point, if I were the devs I would simply restructure the trials to make it unambiguous what the intent was in a way the players could not impose alternate meaning. I would basically make them zone events. Lambda and BAF would be visually situated as a "permanent zone" just like the Hive, and people would have to enter it just like the Hive. Everyone within the zone would automatically be added to an invisible zone-wide league, but players would be free to make whatever teams they wanted. Attempting to enter the zone would queue you until the minimum team size was queued. Attempting to enter the zone once a trial started would spawn a new instance of the zone.
I'm not sure if that idea is serious or born of frustration with the thread, but if these trials were zone events they would be disasters. The Hamidon encounter is built in such a way that people can either get with the program or leech, but really can't do much to grief people trying to do the trial honestly. Not so much with the Incarnate trials. -
Yes, of course it does. Each Incarnate ability you get makes you more powerful. It doesn't just unlock the next level of abilities. Not sure what your point was. I haven't played Portal so I really didn't know the answer to the question.

Quote:One of the reasons that many MMORPGs don't add "puzzle" type challenges is that they tend to be solved by one, then copied by many via sites like Paragon Wiki. All true. But challenging solo content doesn't necessarily need to involve mega tough bosses. It can include long arcs with varying types of difficult problems to solve. CoX is sorely lacking in "puzzle" challenges, so that is one area they could develop for that's scarsely been touched. They just need to expand their creative thinking beyond the "how many newer, tougher AV's can we throw at the userbase" hacked to death reasoning.

I've started logging in my characters to get this and the vet reward badge and I noticed something. The badge just seems to be there when I log in. I don't get the award 'ding' you usually get when you earn a badge.
I just logged a character who earned "clubber" the second she logged in, but no message regarding Lucky, Constant or Loyal Customer?
Are these account badges? -
Quote:Make no mistake, I agree with you. I'm willing to wait as long as it takes to get what I want in most cases. I'm just saying that it's not really important why people want the abilities.Clouded & EvilGeko:
Ok, fair enough.
Speaking for myself, I want Purple Sets for some of my characters, and playing the game for long enough for them to drop/getting enough H-V Merits/earning enough INF looks like it's going to take quite a while.
Fortunately, I enjoy playing the game, so it's not a problem for me.
(To forestall: I'm not saying the situations are analagous, nor am I putting down anyone who doesn't agree with my POV.)
I just wasn't entirely sure what was being said - I was under the impression that an argument other than "They're cool, I want them," was being made. That is, of course, a perfectly good argument in and of itself.
So, thanks! -
Quote:Oh, I understand quite well that people just want the Incarnate abilities because it's fun to feel powerful. No one needs the abilities for ANY content, including the trials. They want them. That's a perfectly acceptable view to have. What solo or small-team-based content in this game is difficult enough at base level to require Incarnate Abilities? Or, indeed, even make Incarnate Abilities desirable?
I ask because I don't really follow:
If a player is enjoying playing the high-level solo content, why worry about the rate at which Incarnate Abilities are unlocked?
If a player finds high-end solo contant trivial to replay in gaining Incarnate Abilities, why believe it will become less trivial with these abilities?
In other words, if you're enjoyably handling all of the content you are interested in playing with your current powerset, why try to change that by seeking different abilities?
I truly do not understand this. -
Quote:Let me ask you this. Why did you read, "When you all get older you're understand," into my post? You may not really mean it to, but this has a condescending tone that makes me really want to discount your viewpoint as too closed-minded. The mention of "getting older" suggests strongly that anyone with a viewpoint other than yours is immature, and would get over having a different viewpoint, if only they would grow up.
I didn't say that. I discussed how my personal views developed over time. It's simply a fact, that I used to get much more upset about this stuff, but age and experience mellowed me out. I know teenagers who have the same outlook. I know we all read things into other folks posts. I do it, everyone does. But I try (not always successful) to just read what people write and react to that.
Finally, as to discounting my views. No one cares what I or anyone else thinks on these boards for the most part. Mostly we just shout our views at each other and the devs react to make the most people happy in accord with their own goals. I respect most people's opinion on this issue, but we're long past the point where anyone is going to change their mind. -
Actually, I'll just continue to post whatever I want within the rules. And you'll continue to snip. Your choice.

Quote:I've found that when you stop focusing on the goal, the time becomes irrelevant. I have characters I've even forgotten what Inventions I wanted for them. Recently, my Will/DB Tanker has a build that soft-caps SM, LE and a few other things. I had it all planned out in mids last year. Logged on recently to find that I had all the merits needed to finish it up without spending a dime. Just plain didn't bother because the character was already sturdy and I was having fun. When I compared myself to some posters in places like the market forum, I seem to be fairly laid back about the timeframes I have to achieve goals. I'll work on something over the course of a couple of months if it's sufficiently high-end. Yet I am not so laissez-faire about them that I am willing for them to take years. Not for one character, certainly. The point of shinies is to have them at some point, so that you can actually enjoy the combination of satisfaction at a goal achieved and the material benefits of the shiny.
I advise people to enjoy the journey all the time, but I wouldn't advise them to walk from Vladivostok to Cape Town to visit the sights there.
I used to play for shinies, but I got older and I got over it. This is all just digital crap. It's certainly fun to be playing my Incarnates on an ITF, but it's not so crazy that I'm going to stress that my other 9 level 50s aren't that powerful. -
Quote:OK. Honestly, I've seen YOU and a couple of other people limit their complaints to that. But it's disingenuous to claim that people haven't been making these ridiculous claims about the whole focus of the game shifting. Hell, it's the subject of this OP.This is hyperbole. Most people are objecting to the current implementation of the 'other' path for Incarnate levels (shards and their conversion).
The level shifts only work in the trials. If you're never doing the trials, you would never see said level shifts. You only get the differential in power between uncommons and rares. Significant for some slots (e.g. Interface), less so for others.Quote:I tend to agree about very rares but Rares offer level shift and those should be a goal worth obtaining.
Well, two things on that:Quote:I still find it laughable that you think the current converstion method for shards to threads can be used to make 'meaningful progress.' Progress? Yes. Meaningful? Pfffffffft. :P
1) I'm actually trying it instead of complaining about it. I have an alt that I am perfectly happy to just get to uncommon stage with. So once it's done I'll assess how it compares to my main Incarnate characters.
2) I don't find the fact that it will take a long time to be particularly problematic. Been here continuously for 7 years. Not planning on leaving. In no rush. As I've told you over and over, I don't play for shinies, I play for fun. I do the trials when I want fun, not shinies. I already have rares on my main Incarnates, even have the salvage for the very rares, just don't care to craft it. But I still play the trials because they are fun. I still play alts, I still do TFs.
More than anything, this is what I find so completely bewildering about this argument. That people can't just play what they enjoy and let the rewards come when they come. -
Quote:Then folks should stop saying that the devs are copying WoW and other raiding games. In fact they should stop calling the trials, "raids" because they aren't.At some point reading comprehension will kick in and the people who keep bringing up this tired old argument will realize that we don't care what other MMOs do, just like nobody cares how Grandpa had to walk five miles in the snow to school every day, uphill, both ways.
Nice sideways flame, by the way. Proving my point about this cohort of complaints all the time. -
Quote:Honestly, you accuse people of saying that a lot more than it's actually said. I'm not saying no one has said that. But it's extremely rare. Most people are objecting to the contention that the whole game has changed when it hasn't.A more reasonable conversion structure - one that took into account the vastly lower shard generation rate - would be more acceptable. The specific implementation that exists is the objectionable item, not the generic idea.
And I don't argue against the argument "hey, the trials are fun and I like them, so I don't really see a problem" (I disagree, but it's not an irrelevant nor unreasonable argument) as much as I do against the "new stuff just isn't for you, so stuff it" stance.
I personally object to the idea that you can't make any meaningful progress outside of the trials. Yes, it's slower, but it's only when you get to the rare and ultra-rares that it gets silly. Considering that people are stomping the non-Incarnate content with even commons, I don't see why people feel getting to the very rares is a reasonable expectation. -

Quote:You refuse any option other than the specific one you want. On that basis, any argument anyone offers is irrelevant because it's not what you want. You can participate in this system without doing the trials. You can move much faster by doing them. You don't want to.As the Trials are tied directly and inexorably with the new ADVANCEMENT, what the rest of the game like IS COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT. New advancement is "the game".
You don't deny that the Trials are different from pre-existing content; you deny that we should have access to the new advancement because we don't like this new, different content. The fact that the old content is still there doesn't matter, because the old content doesn't get us the new advancement. Until it does, it doesn't matter what the rest of the game is like when having conversations about the new advancement.
You (collective) would do us all a huge favour if you'd stop recycling the same old irrelevant arguments. Unless your argument in some way involves a (viable - please don't talk about shards and those stupid conversion recipes) method to obtain new advancement, it means less than nothing in this context.
You saying that is irrelevant is nothing more than you putting your fingers in your ear and refusing to listen. -
Quote:A perfect example of the hyperbole of this argument. I'm willing to bet, based on his posting history, that this poster has never been on a raid in any other MMORPG. Anyone who has raided in other MMORPGs understands immediately that CoH's version of an endgame isn't comparable.Getting punched in gut also hurts less than getting stabbed in the head, but I'm still not going to appreciate getting punched just because "it could be worse." It can always be worse, but that doesn't make reality any better.
But that doesn't matter because it's easier to make things up and complain rather than give the content a chance. -
They usually so degenerate because folks tend to use false and hyperbolic arguments in support of their criticism of the trials. As it is with this post.

Quote:Most of them did at one time. At one time:None of these provides exclusive rewards for an entire section of the game. All of these are an occasional activity that supplement the game, not replace them. I am required to do none of these to progress.
You couldn't get a respec unless you had a full team;
You couldn't get a Hamidon Origin enhancers (which were quite powerful at the time) unless you raided;
You couldn't generate (although you could buy) Pool 'C' and 'D' recipes;
You couldn't and still can't get certain accolades, e.g. TF Commander, unless you team.
You're taking the definition of "progress" and narrowing it so that it suits your argument. Loot has always been a form of progression in MMORPGs, including this one. Loot has always been significantly easier to gain teamed in this game.
There is no change of focus. -
Quote:Define "meaningful" progress? Personally, I would define meaningful as having uncommons in all 5 slots. That takes significantly less than hundreds of hours for ten characters.Originally Posted by MoonlighterWorse, from what I can tell to make meaningful progression on my 10 level 50s will take hundreds of hours grinding out the same two raids.
Strange. I was able to log on last night and be in a mission inside a minute. What's changed in your mind? The fact that you have content that takes longer than two minutes to form? How has that changed from pre-Issue 20? Even forming an ubiquitous ITF can take 20 minutes or more at slow times.Quote:Originally Posted by MoonlighterThe strength of the game has always been its robust, scaling group mission system. When friends ask why I still play the game I've always said it's because I can log into the game and being doing a meaningful mission within two minutes.
That's all changed.
But solo content can and always has been able to be done quickly upon logging in and is still there last I checked. -
Is there some recognition by folks on either side of this debate that you're arguing over corner cases? Most of the time, this isn't a big deal. It's like anytime you're dealing with PUGs. Most experiences are fine, it's the few outliers that get your attention. But that doesn't change the fact that the bad experiences are the outliers.
Most people won't kick stragglers or care they got dumped into their trial.
But once in awhile you do get a group/league that does care and a league leader that has no compunction about kicking folks the LFG tools puts in their league. So long as that stays an uncommon occurrence (unlike uncommon drops, of course!
) the devs are unlikely to do a darn thing about any of this.
