  1. So another question:

Do you want the devs to work on new coding to solve a problem that isn't really a problem, and that can be ameliorated by using existing tech (name purges), or would you rather they spend development resources coming up with cool stuff for us to do with these awesomely named characters?

Yeah, traps isn't available for custom critters in AE for some reason, and the doppelgangers use custom critter mechanics (set to Hard, as far as I can tell. So if you want to see just what powers your clones will have, go into the custom critter creator and see what you have on Hard/Hard).

VEAT powers aren't available for custom critters either though, but the doppelgangers still have them. Has anyone fought a doppelganger with a squid yet? What do you get?

Dark Miasma is definitely no fun. Army of Elec/Pain Corruptors isn't all that fun either, they keep healing and draining all your end.

Given a choice between inviting "John Smith" or "Amaz1ng Man," I'd go with John Smith any day. Leet is acceptable if the character is a Freakshow or a hacker or something...in other words, if a leet-speak name is one the character would have chosen for themselves. The same goes for creative misspellings. I used one for a character in AE, where there are no issues with names being taken, because the character would have thought it was cool.

So? That means they care, at least a little. Which completely negates the "if people come back and find their names gone they will be angry and leave again" argument. Then the devs can do a purge of names on characters of any level, secure in the knowledge that anyone who even remotely cared one iota about their character names at least took advantage of a free reactivation weekend to secure them.

Incidentally, the supermodels are the shallow, stereotypical kind, and they soon run out of interesting things to say. The girlfriend is the non-jealous kind, and when you get bored of the supermodels she'll still be there with an "I told you so" and a great arc you've never gotten around to playing.

  6. Do some name purges. Trial accounts should be purged at most two months after the trial expires. Names of characters under level 10 on accounts that have been inactive for over a year should be purged every few months. Names tied to accounts that don't even have a global should be purged regardless of level. Face it, they ain't coming back.

No, I'm not bitter that my "perfect name" is taken. Most of my naming problems stem less from a name I like being taken and more from my inability to think of a name I like.

As for what to do when/if cross-server teaming is implemented, add the server name to the character name when it matters, such as when inviting someone to a team. So you would see Eva Destruction over my head, you would see Eva Destruction in the team window, but to invite me to a team you would type "/i Eva Destruction(Champion)" or something like that. A /getserver command or rightclicking on me would show you my server.

We're also generally pretty good about answering newcomers' questions and pointing them toward the resources WN mentioned. It still doesn't change the fact that these newcomers have to have some interest in AE to begin with. Threads mentioning AE in the general interest forums usually contain a few "this is how I find arcs, there's a lot of good stuff" posts followed by rants about farming or lack of XP.

The vast majority of the playerbase never listens to other players. Go look at the market forum if you don't believe me. I join teams, hear griping about how AE is all farms/crap rewards, mention that I just played an AE arc that was fun, interesting, and got me a few bars of XP and some really good stuff from my ticket rolls, and get griping about PLed AE babies as a response. I mention that I play a lot of AE (not farms) and no one in-game has yet asked me what arcs I would recommend that they try.

Then again, I also groan every time a teammate opens their paper or scanner and immediately suggest we go do something that's actually fun, so no wonder nobody listens to me. Must get uber XPz. Need every server full of 50s, or something.

Putting that fix in with GR is THE worst thing they could have done, aside from slapping in that half-**** patch in the first place with no testing after months of ally abuse. Seriously. It's like getting your hair fixed, then walking into the room with three or four swimsuit models and expecting anyone to notice your new improved hair.

Other stupid things they've done is completely ignore issues that have been brought up over and over again by knowledgeable members of the community while apparently actually reading posts by Dev's Digest chasers who don't know where their shift key is (Aeon's comment on why we can't have finer control over spawn placement comes to mind....no response to all the people correcting him and clarifying what they really want), allow people to rate arcs without actually playing them in the first place, seemingly not realize that hardcore badgers want badges for stuff they didn't actually do, the sporadic at best awarding of Dev's Choice, Positron's "**** you" post that resulted in no noticeable action being taken and only served to make people paranoid about their joke arcs with animals on a farm, ignore multiple requests for simple additions (Lts and minions as "fight a boss" objectives, for example) while rushing to add the new shiny that is a cute gimmick at best and will result in mostly garbage arcs made solely to take advantage of the new shiny, leave Dev's Choices awarded during i14 closed beta on the first few pages, the farce that was last year's official AE awards, the most recent "dev interest" being contests that often require participants to unpublish what THEY wanted to write (and in some cases PAID to write) in favor of what somebody else wanted them to write, and the only Dev's Choices in that period being from said contests....shall I go on about how the devs have done absolutely nothing to dispel the common perception that AE is just a wasteland of outdated farms, broken arcs, and overpowered custom critters that give crap rewards?
  10. My daughter started out with "I want to sit with you" and just watching the flashy colors on the screen.

Then it became "There's a bad guy! Fight him!"

    "He's too low level."

"But he's taking that lady's purse!" (I fought him. Getting to missions took a while sometimes.)

Then one day I heard the magic words: "Mom, when I'm a superhero I'll have pink hair and a black skirt and black boots and fly with a rocket backpack and go hiiiiiya. Can I be a superhero in your game?" And her very first character, a MA/WP Scrapper was born. A few years later, she has a 25 Fire/Fire Scrapper who has declared herself defender of Steel Canyon (it REALLY ticked her off when we trashed the place for the villain cape mission. She actually started crying.) and a lot of alts. She's also very useful for playing a character on the other account when we need more damage for an AV or something.
  11. Ravenstorm. For the longest time he was just "Who's that guy? What's up with that guy? What's his story? Does he actually ever do anything other than stand on that rock?" He was the one who trained Eva up to 50.

Well now it turns out he does actually do something; he gets captured by Hollow Point's militia who looks suspiciously like Council, frees himself with Death Shroud, then proceeds to run around aggroing stuff. He should be the game's signature Scrapper character. Ms Liberty isn't a real Scrapper. Scrappers don't need a private army of dorks with flamethrowers, they can solo all of Arachnos all by themselves, or they're at least gonna try. Maybe Valkyrie is, but she's stood by far too long while Positron tortured countless TF runners with his old TF, and didn't lift a finger to advocate making it less arduous for her fellow Scrappers seeking the accolade. And besides, Rikti invasions happen right in front of her all the time, and she doesn't do anything. Mynx, catgirl, 'nuff said.

So yeah, Ravenstorm, you're now officially my favorite. Have a -KB IO, on me.

One of the reasons non-farmers were using AE was to experience new content they hadn't done a dozen times already. That's what I was using it for. Now I have a ton of new dev-created content to play through. So I'm on a break from AE, and I wouldn't be surprised if other people were too, for the same reasons.

And tickets > regular drops any day. My AE-only character (no farms, only story-based arcs) is level 32 and has earned over 600 million inf from crafting and selling bronze rolls. If I were running normal content I'd have earned...quite a few immob, confuse and fear recipes that nobody wants, a lot of commons, and a lot of common salvage that the market is saturated with. Ticket rolls are weighted to produce more stuff that people actually use while normal drops aren't, so I generate tons of damage and defense and heal recipes instead.

Of course if you're after XP then AE sucks. I personally don't care about levelling super-fast, especially if it means I don't have any inf without marketeering, which I don't enjoy all that much. It also means I don't have to cross three zones to get to my mission or run to Azuria or hunt 20 anything, ever. Playing arcs by forum regulars also eliminates the "defeat all enemies in the four-story map" missions. If you're a villain and don't want to switch sides, AE also lets you avoid Longbow and Arachnos when you inevitably get sick of them.

They've already put in the catch. Have you actually played Praetoria? The content is harder. Enemies hit harder, and debuff more. Lots of ambushes. Lots of "special spawns" and not so many 3-minion spawns to fill up your insp tray. People alternate between praising the more interesting missions and complaining that they are too difficult for low levels. Now wouldn't it be nice if we were better equipped to handle the increased difficulty, so we could have missions more interesting than glorified paper missions throughout the game, at all levels?

This also encourages alting, which means that there isn't as much of a rush to put out as much end-game content. Just proliferate a powerset or three to keep people entertained while you work on more end-game. Not that I'm not still going to complain about a lack of endgame, of course, but some people are easily distracted or just don't play their 50s very much.

(Ok, with Stalkers the problem is that an AT that relies on surgical strikes and single-target damage is pretty useless in a game that has turned into an AoE-focused blitz fest, but that's a flaw in the AT's basic design.)

APPs are intended as a reward? First I've heard of it. If you're going to "reward" me for getting to level 35 by giving me access to a power I couldn't get before that at least make it worth taking, I mean a crappy self-rez, what is that? I hereby demand the removal of all powers I don't feel are worth taking from the game.

I also demand access to all powers at level 1, double the number of enhancement slots, and for every enemy to fall down instantly and give me double XP and inf the second I walk into the mission. Anything less is half-**** and we shouldn't be happy about it.

If you want to claim it would lead to a drop in challenge, then you have to back that up by demonstrating that most builds would become dramatically stronger with 3 extra powers. Since those who take stamina skip their 3 most skippable powers, any powers they do add instead will likely be situational at most.
One thing it will do is give characters access to more powers before level 30 or so. It will definitely give you access to more powers before 20. I dunno, what with the last few issues adding more 20-30 content and GR being all 1-20 maybe their datamining shows that the majority of players spend most of their time at those levels?

Of course the fact that after you hit 30 new content tends to dry up and you're playing through a wasteland of old, lame fed-exes to Azuria and Brickstown contacts sending you to Perez or some guy in St. Martial sending you to the far end of Nerva for some arc that frankly isn't compelling enough to be worth the trip has nothing to do with it, oh no, it couldn't possibly.

Yeah, that would be nice too.

Actually, speaking of ITFs, one of the things that "alarm points," traps, and other security measures could do is make stealthing, and therefore speed-running more difficult. It would also make Stalkers more lol-worthy than ever, but the devs hate them anyway.

It could mean graphical upgrades to the older maps. It could mean new skins for existing maps. It could mean the removal of some of the more annoying-to-find blinky spawn points (behind the crates in the warehouse, I'm looking at you. For ten minutes). It could mean some new tilesets replacing some maps in the "generic warehouse/lab/office/cave" rotations, much like Praetoria got new tech maps and some of the blue caves have been replaced with smooth caves.

It could mean changes to map dynamics...addition of "alarm points" that spawn ambushes, security cameras, defenses such as turrets, stuff on fire, destructible terrain, changes to spawn points, etc. Which would be very cool, but I wouldn't call it "minor."

I'm very excited by the mention of 'new systems' that are going to require more Beta time. Content, powers and zones are all great, but new systems are what really keep the game fresh. So, I'm guessing that 'casual paths' means some sort of non-combat advancement or other downtime activity.
As long as it's not more rewards that you can only earn by not playing.
  25. Actually, "Alpha slot tied to lore? Cool!" was a knee-jerk reaction. Now that I've though about it some more, it will be cool if:

There are multiple paths to unlocking it. As in, multiple story arcs. For one thing, running the same arc on every 50 will get old very fast. For another, judging by some of the more recent content, I doubt they will be able to come up with a single arc that suits every character concept. And I really really REALLY hope it has absolutely nothing to do with Statesman, Recluse, or the whole Origin of Power garbage. I would like there not to be another major piece of canon that I have to ignore because it's stupid.

Secondly: As for CoH 2.0 being a completely new game, I most certainly hope not. For one thing, how are they going to make existing characters work? I'm sure a lot of the loyal vets are attached to their existing characters, and have a lot invested in them. If you tell them they have to start over, will they? I don't think I will. The game can't afford to lose those loyal vets.

And this talk of a signed NDA to get into i20 closed beta has me a little...worried. What are they worried about? Are they worried about an i13 style leak and resulting exodus on a bigger scale? Again, they can't afford to lose those loyal vets. ED made some people quit, true, but ED also came with a whole new "expansion" that made a lot of people return and a lot of people join, and we just haven't been getting much of any real substance lately. We get new shinies to make people come back, but nothing to make them stay. And you know, when ED hit there weren't any other superhero MMOs. I'm hoping our devs are smarter than that, and these "super-secret" changes are being kept super-secret for the same kinds of reasons closed betas were introduced in the first place, combined with the "start low, then power up rather than start high, then nerf" philosophy.

As for signed NDAs, nice try. I can see why they're doing it I guess, what with the massive increase in mothership raids and multiple leak-fuelled "DOOOOM" posts during GR closed beta, but face it, the people who don't respect the concept of an NDA still won't.
