Great advice here, and I also recommend that you visit and hang out in the "Base Construction" forum (just two below this one in the same section). Lots of knowledgeable people over there who can answer specific base-related questions and you can get tons of ideas from the various threads already there.

Best of luck designing your new base!

My understanding is that, to conserve power slots, yes, some people choose to use the Rocket Pack as their means of FLIGHT travel (not necessarily their ONLY means of travel, however). The primary downside is, as you pointed out, its speed. Flight is already the slowest of the four travel choices (by design), but the weakness of the Pack is that you cannot easily enhance its speed (it's initially equal to base Flight speed, IIRC).

I think this is a question that each player has to answer for themselves based on their play style as well as the toon in question's specific situation.

I have a character that won't kill, but he doesn't feel it's much of a lesson if a criminal just gets slapped around a bit, and then teleported off to a nice ward where he will be taken care of and waited on hand and foot, before being taken to a nice comfortable taxpayer funded cell. He figures that if he wants to keep that criminal from wanting to go right back on the street when he gets out, he has to make their defeat memorable. Which is why when HE defeats a foe, he makes sure it hurts, a LOT. Not enough to activate the transporter, but enough to cause plenty of pain. Then once he makes his point, he lets them go.

In fact, I've often said that so-called Hit Points are not physical damage at all, but actually a combination of pain level, exhaustion, and the will to keep fighting. So instead of actually punching their foes, Controllers might just hold them long enough to be able to put some permanent restraints on them, and activate a Teleport Beacon. And Scrappers don't do more damage than Tankers because they're physically stronger, but because they're willing to cause more pain, and are more intimidating to be in a fight with. Tankers may actually be encouraging foes to keep fighting with them, because they're taunting them to keep their attention.

Anyway, the point is, it's up to you how powerful your attacks are. You could be an infinitely powerful being with enough strength to move the whole Earth in your little finger, at which time you would be pulling your punches. Or, you might be a gritty vigilante going up against foes that are much more powerful than you, using intimidation and dirty tricks to even the odds.
    Nice post, J_D.
  5. Welcome to the game, and to the best server!

I'll echo what most everyone is saying about the various Victory global channels -- there is quite a bit of activity on these channels at all hours (more during prime time hours, of course), and it's very easy to get a TF team either blue- or red-side.

As for an SG, I think Grey Pilgrim's advice is sound -- don't rush into anything (I think you've seen the results of that firsthand). Team up with some people and if you run into players who match your style, see if they are in an SG and whether you can join.

As noted, the "Victory Supergroups" thread stickied at the top of this forum is a good bet to see a few groups who are recruiting (I suggest working your way backward on the thread, as many of the groups advertised in earlier posts may no longer be active in the game).

Best of luck, and if there are any questions you have, don't hesitate to let us know!
  6. 54-month vet here.

I think the only thing I see on peoples' lists that I haven't done in my time in CoX is the Cathedral of Pain Trial (I never did Calvin Scott's TF either, but I started playing RIGHT after they removed it from the game, so I never even saw that one).

When the CoP Trial went live mid-week (as I recall), our SG did an initial run, but as I work weekdays, I was going to have to wait until the weekend to try it out. Then, of course, the massive exploit was discovered and that was that for the CoP Trial.
  7. FYI, it can also be done via the "Options" menu (by setting up hotkeys for toggling between the two).

I believe Rod is correct -- simply open up the "Powers" window (like he pointed out, NOT the icon in your Power Tray), scroll down to find the temp power in question, right-click it and select "Delete". At that point, you will again be eligible to purchase a new Raptor Pack.

Yes, you can only receive it once, so since you haven't, you should still be eligible.

On the subject of maps, I suggest using vidiotmaps.com instead of the site you linked to (which I'd never before heard of, to be honest) -- check out this map of Mercy Island (I chose the "Print Out" option). I think it clearly shows that you can move from there to either PO or Cap.

  12. For me, my characters BEGIN at level 50.

I enjoy the end-game content that CoX offers (and if you don't think there is any, you're fooling yourself). I really like playing a toon that has ALL (or nearly so) its possible capabilities -- that's what makes me feel most heroic (or villainous, as the case may be). I create a toon for a perceived future need -- a debuffer, a Tank/Brute, a damage-dealer, a buffer, etc. Then I have that character available in my "toolbox" of 50s and can bring the most appropriate one to whatever team I'm joining.

I really prefer being able to bring a character to the team that contributes to the team's synergy in the best possible way given the circumstances.

So the answer for me, I guess, is that my character is never really "done", but may be called upon depending on situational need.

To throw us a bone every once in a while wouldn't be so bad, right?
Well, try to keep in mind that Hero Con is just over a week away, and there have been pretty broad hints of "major" announcements forthcoming there. So I think it's very understandable on the devs' part that they're playing it a bit close to the vest until they can make a big splash at Hero Con with all the new shiny announcements.

(And don't worry, those of us attending will CERTAINLY share every little tidbit of information the second it's released, rest assured. )

  15. Congrats on a pretty awesome achievement in perseverence!
  16. I know many hunt Fakes in the Shadow Shard zones, but personally I prefer hunting them in Peregrine Island. They spawn between about levels 41 and 50, but I generally find more in the lower end of that range (especially around the docks on the southeastern portion of the island). The only issue I've ever had is that it can be a popular place to hunt Fakes, so some competition sometimes occurs. In that case, though, I've often combined teams and made some new friends in the process!

Actually I think the new capacity is 30, not 100 (was pretty sure I remembered that from in-game experience, and the wiki backs it up).

True enough -- but referring directly to the article, the way I read it is that the author is attempting to write an article that not only points out what he considers to be the top five "broken" aspects of MMOs, but also suggests fixes (that's they way he's formatted his list).

I see five separate "What needs to be done to fix it:" entries within the body of his article, corresponding to each of his five points. If part of the point of his article is NOT to include possible solutions, why are these sections included? Padding?

Either he's a crank or a very poor writer (or both) IMHO.

    In-game Spam?

Same here, I haven't turned off e-mail on any of my characters across two accounts, but the incidence of RMT spam seems to have subsided to a great degree as far as my observations go.

Honestly, I think it's great that the disable e-mail option was given to players (more options for more folks is always better), but personally I never minded the 2-10 seconds it takes to click the "Spam" button a few times. Sometimes I even get a chuckle out of some of the oddball names they choose for their "fake" toons.
  23. My thought in reading his article was: "Why did you bother?" I mean, look at each of his 'What needs to be done to fix it' sections: pretty much each one amounts to him saying, "I have absolutely no idea."

Wow, way to bring to light "problems" and not offer any solutions. What a moron.
