I fought with this for a very long time for my latest respec (from that super kat/regen thread Werner, Jack, and others worked in). Unfortunately, with enemies getting larger and larger, that cone just doesn't hit as much as it used to unless you're very well situated, and unfortunately, its usefulness seems to be dwindling.
I ended up dropping it to keep SJ in the build (I refuse to rely on a temp travel, though).

As a side note, we all know about how useful A-merits are for getting the good IOs, but, if you have a regular group of friends you play with (or people of similar interests), it is possible to run an ITF, Tin Mage, and Apex in about an hour (total) {or do LGTF instead of ITF, your preference}. Do this two days in a row and you will have enough merits for a LotG 7.5%, with leftovers.
My group runs these all the time (instead of incarnate trials), and after 20.5 comes, you'll also be able to use astral/emp merits on rewards, so even the more expensive things really aren't all that pricey in the end.
    ~
Back to the build- if you're not getting tactics, I would at least recommend slotting a kismet in weave, otherwise your accuracy won't quite be at 95% vs +3s in all your attacks. Like you said, missing sucks.
With the slots you can drop from FH, BU, and SM, you can definitely get a few slots into tough.
If you're building for range defense though... that's a little odd. You only really have 1 power to slot a mako's bite set in (Soaring dragon), and all the other attacks you have are either PbAoEs (with no real range set bonuses, cleaving blow/eradications would be wasteful), or they're GC and DA, which generally have fairly unique slotting.

55% recharge is basically the minimum recharge you want in the build (that's just so Dull Pain is permanent without an alpha slot). You will find significant improvements if you can get this a bit higher, and even more improvements if you get your defenses higher.

In a general katana/regen build, I try to have enough defense that 1 DA will put you at melee softcap, and when you throw shadow meld, all of your defenses are at *least* 45 (if possible, 59, incarnate softcap, this typically costs a lot more money, however), while having 60+ recharge in sets.

Here's an example that isn't terribly expensive, if you work slowly at it, anyway.

You can probably see how keeping those kd procs would make things rather difficult to keep values like this. If it were me, I would make Interface powers that have those sort of chance effects, rather than some of the more useless ones we do have.
  6. Elegost

    KM/Elec

well, reactive armor has a s/l defense bonus for 4 slots :]
  7. Erm, I'm not entirely sure what you were building for. Your recharge is only 55%, defenses are low, resistances are low, and your endurance isn't all that great, either (because you don't have any accolades).

While SotW is a pretty good attack, Gambler's Cut is better (in terms of DPA) and will net better results in your attack chains. Other than that, you pretty much picked all the right powers (unless you want a travel power or tactics)

Until you get to Spiritual Core, you really want to get the partial core, not total core, alpha slot. That way all your regen/healing will be wonderfully buffed.

Look at the recharge values on your BU, MoG, and Shmeld. Remove one slot and see how little it changes. (.5 seconds)
With the partial core, 3 slotting for recharge is almost completely pointless.

You did a lot of things that don't make much sense... the KD procs I can sort of understand as a personal preference, but the Touch of Death proc in SD? Do you know that it has a lower chance to fire than a mako proc? And Golden Dragonfly... why use 5 oblits, but instead of using the proc, you use a scirocco proc? That makes no sense unless this is a very low budget build and you're just building around what you have stashed.
Divine avalanche is another oddly slotted power. I prefer a nucleolus, lyso, lvl 50 damage io, (any lvl 50) damage/recharge, and a LotG 7.5% rech.

Dark blast has a lot of slots in it... I'm not sure why. If you were building for straight e/n defense, you should have 3 slotted eradications and cleaving blows in flashing steel and lotus drop.

Tough is underslotted, as is weave and maneuvers. Resilience can take the steadfast unique to save a slot space. Also putting in a performance shifter +end proc in QR and Stamina will help your endurance considerably.

That's about all that's standing out. Hope that helps :]

  10. oh hey, look at that.
    That's useful
  11. I also have antimatter stashed at lvl 45 for anyone who needs it, in case Des isn't on and I'm around, let me know.
  12. As I previously said... with 55% recharge in sets (plus hasten), you will have dull pain permanent (with it being slotted normally), that with accolades will get you to hp cap, thus rendering all hp set bonuses useless.

You have plenty of recharge, but you don't really have any defense. Shmeld doesn't even get you to 45% to anything, any your smashing blow slotting? gross.
Also you didn't take body blow, but took focused burst (which has much worse DPA)... odd choice.
Force Feedback procs can be useful, but I wouldn't waste slots on more than one (because of how they unfortunately work), and I'd keep the one in torrent for that.
Your endurance is also pretty bad, need more slots in QR.

try again, with less focus on regen/hp bonuses, and more defense sets (melee or smash/lethal first, others later)
You can get some pretty good values out of the set.
  13. While it may not be applicable anymore in this discussion, I think it's worth noting that the "Results are in take 2" thread has very dated material, and shouldn't be taken as completely accurate (anymore). Billz requested the thread be unstickied almost a year ago because of people misrepresenting his data (and other related shenanigans), so I don't want the same mistake to happen over here in Kheldian land :]
  14. fire/X corrs win all the time!

...(you can ignore the dp/traps def on the team <.< that was the only pug spot).

    ~
That aside, I would completely agree with Obitus. What I've heard is the same: if you want sonic blast, go with a defender (also, traps for primary for better defensive numbers, if you want them), otherwise, just make it a corr.
  15. recharge, recharge, defense, moar recharge.

More specifically, pick either melee or smash/lethal (either one should work fine), then see if you can build up to (or a bit higher than) 32.5% to that particular defense. while you're doing that, make sure you have at LEAST 55% recharge in set bonuses (preferably more) (this will get you perma-dull pain with hasten, and have some overlap with spiritual). After that, see if you can get more defenses to other types, or moar recharge for your clickies. It's not your passive regen that keeps you alive, it's your reactive and proactive use of clickies that keeps you upright.
It's also worth making sure you have enough tohit versus +3s while building. One of the problems with kinetic combat and touch of death is low accuracy values in the sets, so kismet and tactics are often required to get to (or above) 95% tohit vs +3s.

I just threw one together with 35.4% melee, 20% ranged, 21% AoE, and 63.8% Recharge. So you can get some pretty groovy values out of it without too much trouble.
  16. I completely forgot to check your accuracy vs +3s.
You need a kismet in weave, if you can get a slot from somewhere. And if you're using 4 slots for an accuracy bonus as well, siphon insight is 4 slots for 9% acc, slightly better than thunderstrike, but that means the power isn't doing as much damage, if you intend to use it.

    ~

If you don't know how to check that, go to: Option ->Configuration -> Exemping & base values -> Base Tohit : set this value to 48.
48 is your base tohit versus +3 mobs (it's 45 vs +4s, if you want to check that).

After you set that value, "ok" it and back out. As long as your attacks have an accuracy of at least 95% with this setting, they will have a maximum chance to hit (excluding enemy defenses, if they have any). Essentially, you want this value to be as close to 95 as possible, without going over.
I typically leave my tohit base value at 48, since we often fight purples and reds more than anything.

Thing to remember, though. The Gaussian and Decimation BU procs will throw off your tohit values if the power they're slotted in is toggled on (same for turning BU on). Don't make that mistake :]
  17. If the whole thing works for you, that's all that matters :]
glad to hear it's going well.

Doing this means you lose what you were building for.... lots of melee defense.
The regen build philosophy is (typically) "recharge, recharge, defense, moar recharge,"

you did a good job of this.

the melee defense is just over 32.5, one of the four magic numbers (it means you're one purple insp from softcap), this is good. The ranged and AoE defenses are high enough that Shadow meld will put you over 45% to both as well, (while also putting melee defense over incarnate softcap, 59%)

It looks like the only thing I would change would be the slotting in dark blast. After a second of thought, however, I realized I'd probably keep it for that recharge set bonus, but take out the single thunderstrike IO, move the slot to shadow meld, and put a membrane in it. That leaves you with about a 50% uptime on shmeld, *if* you need to use it that often (better safe than dead).

    Quote:
I know there use to be soft-capped Defense(45%?) and then hard-capped Defense in the game. I'm not sure this is the case currently.
Not sure what this is about... normal softcap is still 45% defense (if you need an explanation why, one can be given), while incarnate cap is 59% defense. "Hard cap," meaning, blue numbers in game, and absolute highest you can achieve, is like... ~214% or something stupidly high. Softcap is what's important, hardcap can be ignored.

I heavily disagree with infinity on losing shmeld or mog as well... Keep them both, live forever.
And if you can't "keep up with fast moving teams" with just SJ, you're doing something wrong.
    Maybe it's a freedom thing, I don't know.

Where did you get this build from, by the way? It looks like something I put together <.<
  21. a couple things:

1: Energy Torrent from APP actually does KD, unlike blasters.
Having the ragnarok proc in it wouldn't really do much, other than add another %chance for the KD to happen.

2: stealth gives incorrect defense numbers in mids, it doesn't give you the values you'd have when it's suppressed, so it's presenting higher numbers than you'd actually be seeing.

If you're using this toon for farming - AE farming - I'd suggest the same thing. Find a farm with nothing but fire damage, and, if you use something like the build I made, will also hopefully be almost entirely fire melee (resists 75% of it, dodges ~80% of it)

Also consider getting an alpha slot in the build. Cardiac or musculature would both be potentially good routes, or maybe spiritual, but either way, getting one will seriously help.

See if this is to your liking:
