Quote:Ouch -- I didn't know that you were losing money on that deal, actually, but I can see how rolling at certain levels would result in a loss.Actually I'm pretty sure I was losing about half my money overall. But I was paying people to make suboptimal rolls, so it would be surprising if I did anything else. I did have long dry spells of recipes that were all worth 1-10 million, but then I'd get a couple of 100-200 million inf items.
Quote:I don't think it's like Vegas, because all those giant buildings you gamble in have made their money back and it wasn't by giving away money at Blackjack. (Of course, free drinks for gamblers have a really high ROI for the house...)
The house percentage at blackjack is even smaller, but someone who can successfully count cards can not only reduce it to zero, but actually turn it slightly in their favor. (While not illegal in Vegas, there's a reason suspected card counters can be banned from casinos. Those casinos aren't in the business to lose.)
From what I've read here about the original merit system, I could have sworn that the overall player "win" percentage was higher with crafting and selling random recipe rolls, then buying what was wanted, as opposed to saving and buying a recipe for 250 merits. -
Quote:I've tried this, got three tip missions, then went back for an hour and didn't get any. Is that a bug?Quote:SwellGuy covered it well. If you didn't have 3 tips already, the RNG hated you that day. But have in mind that you can only hold 3 tips at a time - if you don't do their mishes or drop them, you won't get any new ones.
I did five tip missions in a row, and got to 5/10 on my alignment bar. Done for the night, right? Won't get CREDIT for any more tip missions, but....
Out of curiosity, I ran around PI for far too long -- like 20 minutes -- defeating "grays" trying to get three MORE tip missions to have ready for the next day. After a while I got an invite to do some radio mission with a friend, and sort of forgot about the tip mission goal. FOUR 2/x8 radio missions and a bunch of defeated mobs later, I STILL had no tip missions lined up for the next day, so I strongly suspect that you can't get any more until your "Fame" meter expires. -
Quote:Well, that's the way the random number generator goes? On the other hand -- long term -- there's a reason a lot of people like to roll with merits, and why Fulmen's was buying merit rolls from people and still turning a profit.I've rolled once.
Wasn't overly impressed, so I've not bothered since
Then again, a few days ago I was in a hurry to burn some AE tickets and decided to gamble on two Gold Rolls there. If I'd gotten two Scirocco's there I'd have made twice as much money as I actually did -- one recipe wasn't even worth crafting.
I guess it's like Vegas: a lot of people swear that there's money to be made at blackjack IF you know what you're doing, but if someone loses the first time they play they might not go back. -
At this minute, there's 28 someones bidding on the recipe and 8 more bidding on the crafted enhancement, and two recipes and four crafteds have sold since the Wentworth's clock/calendar struck midnight.
That suggests to me that yours wouldn't fall by the wayside after all, and that there's definitely a demand for that one! -
So far I've rolled once with HVM's:
Miracle: +Recovery
Touch of the Nictus: Chance for Negative Energy Damage
Siphon Insight: Chance for a +ToHit
Scirocco's Dervish: Dam/Acc/End
Scirocco's Dervish: Chance for Lethal Damage
Crafted, the two Scirocco's were going for 10-14 million, the Miracle was going for a little more. The way my luck runs, I'm sure the next one (or two) will be mostly crappy, but I'm happy with this one!

Quote:I've found that some of my characters are better at some missions than others. My tanks, for instance, laugh at the "Rescue the Debuntantes" and "Rescue the Corrupt Cops." Smack down the boss at each hostage, then run the hostage out while the villains throw wadded up paper napkins and Nerf balls at you. There's also a few missions that are tedious to complete, especially depending on the character. I always drop the ones to Rescue Sister Jocasta, Rescue the Debutantes, and Rescue the Corrupt Cops. Mainly because all three involve escorts, which means you can't just blow past the NPCs.
"Is THAT the best you've got?! Maybe you should quit Arachnos and try working for Up 'n' Away Burger instead."
Then again, my stealthy blasters (who dearly love the "click the glowie" missions) absolutely HATE those two hostage missions, since they have to try to clear a path to the door. Not a big deal, but it's not as quick and easy as running the gauntlet on a tank, snickering at the inconsequential damage.
My scrappers just run them straight up on a higher difficulty and clear a path 'cause...well...that's what scrappers do! Or sometimes they'll just duck and run like the tanks.
The only exception is that accursed "Rescue Sister Jocasta" mission. I've done some experimentation, and she's awfully squishy for a Knives of Artemis turncoat. I've rescued her from her boss captor, and then watched as she died as I tried to lead her out since she wants to attack everything she sees. Once, I 'triggered' the boss and stepped back to confirm my suspicions -- and the boss killed her pretty quickly as I simply watched.
I'm not sure if that one's bugged or WAI, but either way I tend to just drop that one when I get it, especially on a tank.
In other news, I'd like the devs to keep coming up with tip missions from time to time -- I rather enjoy them, their relative newness, and the sort of puzzle solving that comes with figuring out the best way to run it with different AT's or different teams. In a couple of years I'd hate for us to be stuck with the same ten favorite missions that everyone knows by heart. -
Quote:At yesterday afternoon's prices, 10 LotGs would have been worth just under a billion, thanks to the recent glut of them (and other high end recipes) on the market and the falling prices -- I scored two for 90ish million each.So for 20 AMs you could get a purple or 10 lotgs, which at current rates would be worth over a billion inf, way more than any purple costs.
Oh noes! If the prices on those keep falling, the casual player will have to sell EVEN MORE of the high-end recipes they casually and infrequently farm in order to purple their warshade! -
Quote:Thanks -- this made me laugh out loud this morning!Just people ... deciding that you absolutely need Thermal shields in order to do your marketing in safety.
Every time someone hits me with their ice or thermal shields when I'm marketing, I like to announce loudly in local "GEE, THANKS, BUT YOUR <power> SHIELDS AREN'T GOING TO PROTECT ME FROM THE PRICES HERE!!!!" (Or "...FROM THE BUY IT NAO PRICES!!" or "...FROM THE EBIL MARKETEERS!" depending on that day's level of silliness.
And at least the devs DID do something to turn off some powers that people would set to "auto" (like Build Up or Practiced Brawler) as long as the auction house employee is targetted. -
Amusingly, under the "Last Post" column, this appears as:
"Re: so I herd you...wait...you"
Therefore, I figured this thread was going to be a rant about tanks who say "Wait here!" then run off and needlessly "herd" while the blasters all stand around, checking their e-mails and watching YouTube, bored beyond words. -
Quote:Not that anybody really cares at this point -- BUT in case someone with the same problem should run across this thread with a search -- I wound up solving the problem by reformatting, reinstalling, and seriously playing around with Logitech's SetPoint software. At this point, I'm about to just back up everything of importance (knowing in advance I'll miss something) and just reformat, reinstall Windows, and start from scratch.
For some unknown reason, the combination of my computer, Windows XP (32 bit), my video card with latest drivers and SetPoint 6.00 and above simply DO NOT work correctly with COH. I've seen where a couple other forum posters are still using SetPoint 4.72 for whatever reason, and 4.72 has been working quite nicely for me for about a week now!
I'm sure SetPoint 6.0, 6.10 and 6.15 work just fine with COH for other people, and they worked for me for other PC applications, but I suspect those later versions were designed for Vista and Windows 7. Since I'm still a near-Luddite who's using XP, they're more hindrance than help. -
Pretty much EVERY AT here is incomplete at level 14. Some people say "play a character to level 20 so you can get a feel for them," others point out that you might STILL not have a good feel for that AT or those particular powersets until the 30's.
I play a LOT of scrappers, and I'm pretty sure that there's not a powerset among them that can successfully solo -- at level 14 -- a mixed spawn of 10 14th level minions, LT's and bosses with just their primary and secondary powersets and TO's.At later levels it's entirely possible, but at 14th? "Get squished just like grape."

Quote:5) Clear the cruft! Farmers don't clean up after themselves and there are also a lot of old busted pre-issue 15 arcs just clogging up the search results. It doesn't encourage players to keep searching for interesting arcs when the random button gives them 10 farms in a row.Quote:I'd like to see them clean up a lot of the old junk and farm arcs, or even the "This is a quick mission I made testing out AE" MA's. One of the big turnoffs for me is seeing a ton of dead MArcs. The problem is how to clean them up, do you do it by number of plays, last played date, rating? You pretty much have to pay someone to go through them, one by one, and weed them out. And even then it would be subjective. Either we make a broad definition, and cut out too many things, or narrow it and leave in too many things. You won't find a perfect middle ground.

Quote:Nah, we just read the website. All of this has been on the Going Rogue FAQ for many months.
Call me crazy but you might want to get the facts before posting errant opinions.
...maybe we're just literate sheep?
Nah.... -
Quote:Preorder: $29.99 USBut the preorders have paid full price? It's rotten, no matter how you look at it.
Complete Collection: $39.99 US (MSRP)*
Complete Collection Item Pack: $6.99 US.
So if you preordered, and bought the Item Pack, you'd save three dollars....
*Unless you found the Complete Collection in a retail store on sale for $29.99 yesterday, which includes a free month of play.
ON THE OTHER HAND, people who preordered got to play with Dual Pistols and Demon Summoning for how many months in advance? -
Quote:That sounds rather redundant -- unless malware bytes finds stuff that adaware misses!oops my bad i re-read your post and see adaware,i would install malware bytes,it finds some things that adaware also finds.
Quote:one other question when you updated your drivers, did you load over top old ones or remove the old and install the new?
Long answer -- this is getting a little ridiculous. Restore points, backing up further and further in time to when things worked properly, then trying all sorts of permutations. I've loaded over old drivers, and I've tried uninstalling the old ones and reinstalling the new -- in "normal" mode and in "safe mode." I've backed drivers up to where there's no ATI or Logitech drivers on here and started anew. [I've spent so much time in "Safe Mode" that my normal desktop resolution looks funny and makes me wonder if I need new glasses!] I've also tried PerfectDisk, and TuneUp Utilities 2010 [recommended by the guy who helped me build this thing].
At this point, I'm about to just back up everything of importance (knowing in advance I'll miss something) and just reformat, reinstall Windows, and start from scratch. -
Yes, it was. I know that a couple of other longtime players and I guessed "oh, I bet it's the GR content" before they announced it, thanks to the previous episodes.
In some ways it's kind of like how they announce the Patch Notes the day after or the week of the patch, if we're lucky? -
A couple of weeks ago* you probably played CoX, logged off, and might even have walked away from the computer as the CoX Updater launched and began downloading the patch. They've done this before for CoV as I recall, pre-downloading something large AFTER we log off so we're not staring at a half-hour download when we'd rather be playing.
*I can't remember the exact date, but if I remember correctly it was somewhere between 10 and 14 days ago -- there's an official announcement thread somewhere if you really want to look for it. -
Quote:First off, I'd like to say "thank you VERY much for the help!" even though I'll admit my first thought when I got to the above part was "oh no!!" or something...um...y'know. Similar. What this means in plain English is that if you've got mouse problems or sudden hitching problems, you've got bigger issues at hand.
I don't know if it's important or not, but CheckDisk went through the first four phases pretty quickly -- I'll guess 15-20 minutes -- but took about 2.5 hours for the "CHKDSK is verifying free space" phase.
I'm assuming WINLOGIN was a typo, but I found TWO WinlogON files: one from (I think) the day the computer was first booted up, and then one on today's date and approximate time the computer finished ScanDisk and loaded Windows.
The results from today's file are below, and thanks again for the help, and the VERY well-written instructions above! (Of course, I don't really understand what the following means, but I'm guessing that 1492 unused index entries and 746 unused security descriptors might have been messing things up and slowing things down, and that "0 KB in bad sectors" is hopefully good news.)

Okay -- I'm not a computer expert and freely admit it, and come to you with CoH Helper and HiJack This logs, posted below. I also bring a (possibly overlong) description of the problem, but thought "the more information I can provide, the better" rather than crying "help lol my comps acting weird help lol!"
I'm sure you see enough of those...so anyhow:
I've been having some weird issues with my system over the past month: first there was a patch in mid-June (?) that created (for me) noticable lag in CoH and someone said "oh, there's new drivers for your ATI card" around...the 20th of June. I downloaded and installed the 10.6 drivers, which fixed that problem, at least temporarily, but there was still more lag than before the patch. Then I read on this forum that there was a newer version, and downloaded the 10.7 drivers in late July/early August. That made things run quite smoothly for a while but then....
Once I realized that probably ALL my drivers were out of date, since friends who know computers better than I helped me build this one in August 2009, I sort of went looking for what else might need updating. Logitech had released a couple new versions of SetPoint, which I use for my MX620 wireless laser mouse, which I've been using for about two years, so I installed that driver.
Things were fine until...I wish I knew. After I'd powered the computer down a few times, I noticed that there were now TWO interrelated problems, which I stupidly suspect might be a driver issue. I tried rolling back the drivers for the video card and SetPoint, I tried restoring my computer to an earlier date and trying different combinations of the four new drivers, and I'm still having the same symptoms. (For some reason, I'm unable to roll the Logitech drivers back to either the 4.72 or 4.80 that I had been using for a year -- I'm only able to use 6.00 now or 6.15.)
For starters, in CoH I now have more lag than I did a month ago, and I really never noticed any lag back then. Now I get the occasional one-second freeze when trying to move in a new zone, occasional bright flashes from the screen, and if I open the market interface and try to scroll through it quickly, the entire screen flashes VERY rapidly until the mouse wheel stops.
At the same time, the wireless mouse started going a little berserk, and not just in CoH! Sometimes it refuses to track side to side or up and down properly, and then spontaneously starts working again. Sometimes when it doesn't want to track properly, the mouse buttons will "click" when pressed, but nothing happens. Not only does it do this in CoH, but I've noticed it when I'm surfing with Firefox. The weird behavior only lasts a minute or two, then goes back to normal. (Of course, my first thought was to replace the batteries, even though they were only a couple of weeks old. That didn't help. I've also have a 2.4ghz cordless phone across the room for years, but once this aberrant behavior started I began to make sure the receiver was nowhere near my desk. And the mouse still has random moments of "sorry, but I don't feel like working just now" several times per day.)
Since the last -- really the ONLY -- changes I've made to the computer were drivers, I'm SUSPECTING it's a driver issue, but haven't been able to fix it. So as mentioned, I come to you experts with my CoH Helper and HiJack This logs -- any suggestions would be welcomed, and thanks in advance! -
I play "City of Heroes" the game, and I also play all sorts of mini-games within it:
-- I've got three different bases -- all small SG's made up of regular players -- and I'm constantly adding to, redesigning and/or tweaking said bases for maximum efficiency and/or aesthetic appeal
-- I roleplay the majority of my characters
-- I play the markets and have made a few billion off it
-- I play around with Mid's and have worked up -- and built -- six semi-ridiculous "dream builds" for what I want to do with my PvE play. I now have a scrapper with whom I can tank better than some other people can with their tanks, and a range softcapped hoverblaster who's taken out level 54 Rikti spawns in RWZ solo.
-- I solo, I team with friends, I occasionally PUG though I used to PUG a lot more
-- whenever I've started to get bored with the game, I've found new mini-games to play: I started badgehunting relatively seriously, I built a couple of toons for PvP and...didn't like it as much as I'd hoped, I spent a few nights working on the crafting table accolade and find that power to be pretty handy at times!
Rituals:
-- must have caffeine within reach
-- fullscreen, since I often like the "game immersion"
-- TV or radio for background noise -- sometimes
-- other PC within easy reach for browsers for wikis, forums, and/or music -- sometimes. -
Quote:It's an uncommon Pool A, meaning it drops from enemies all over Paragon City (or the Isles). Right now there's 16 for sale, only one bidder, and the "last five" here at 5 AM EDT range from 1.2 million up to 5 million.I would think that an extremely rare IO of this variety would be worth a whole lot more than 2M... Last I looked, Serendipity was a defense set.
I don't think the set bonuses are all THAT hot:
* Two enhancements improves your Regeneration by 4%.
* Three enhancements increases maximum Health by 0.75%.
* Four enhancements improves the Accuracy of all your powers by 3%.
* Five enhancements increases Area Effect Defense by 1.25%.
* Five enhancements increases Fire and Cold Defense by 0.625%.
* Six enhancements increases Toxic Resistance by 1.25%. ( http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Serendipity )
...and based on the prices for other defense sets (like LotG's) a lot of other buyers apparently feel the same way!
OMG and /facepalm. Posting without enough caffeine, apparently, and COMPLETELY missed the HEAL/End/Rech part, and the sarcasm part. I'll shut up now. -
Quote:I have said before in-game and to friends IRL that the Market Forum is a lot like a late-night infomercial...that actually works...with a couple of extra twists:I feel like I am a testimonial blurb on some infomercial, heh. However, this approach works at a level I never though possible and I am still not really playing in the deep end of the pool at all, just the middle and low end.
Anyway, many thanks to Fury and the other Ebils who are generally encouraging folks in this forum who I now wish I would have risked taking their advice sooner.
"Hi, everybody! My name is <insert famous Market Forum name here> and I'm here to tell you about an Auction House strategy that REALLY works! In fact, before I get into some of the stupid little details like "buy low and sell high" I want to tell you about my total guarantee!
"I'm SO SURE that my Auction House strategy will work for you, and for anybody else who follows these simple steps, that I'm GIVING AWAY my book "Ebil Marketeering: Monocles and Top Hats" ABSOLUTELY FREE. That's right, all it's going to cost you is a couple of minutes of your time after you call our toll-free number!
"That's right -- I'm GIVING AWAY my book because hey -- I've already made billions with my strategy, I'm STILL making billions with my strategy, and there's still TRILLIONS to be made by anybody who's willing to read through my book and follow the simple instructions.
"In fact, I'm SO SURE that my strategy will work for you that I'm ALSO going to send you a check -- made out to Wentworth's Auction House 'cause I'm not totally stupid -- for 100 million influence! Yes, you COULD take that check and buy some stuff and sell it short and run off with 75 million in your pocket...but wouldn't it be better to learn how to just double your money in 24 hours?*
"So come on -- pick up the phone, give our operators your name and address, and sit back and watch the next 25 minutes of the show so you can learn how to make some SERIOUS money while you're asleep, or at your day job. And again, if you're asking yourself "how can this guy be DOING this for free?" it's because I've already made so much with this strategy that I can afford to be a philanthropist!"
*I can't recall now who had been offering free influence to market naysayers, but I seem to recall it was either Fulmens or JoJo. And still some people didn't want to take FREE INFLUENCE because they "knew" that this entire forum was just one big scam!
Oh well -- for every success story I read here, I just smile and often think the same thing about "why didn't I start reading this forum sooner, instead of coming up with my own beginning strategies that worked, although more slowly?" -
Sadly, it's been working like that for quite some time, which is to say "there's a bug."
Rent IS due every four weeks, but the "rent due" reminder pops up every couple of weeks, it seems.
I just try to pay the rent for all my bases on the first or second of every month, and keep track of it that way.
Of course, there's also some people who pay the rent every six weeks, or just before the power gets shut off, since there's no penalty. More information at http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Base_rent
